This is Eye on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jay Gonzalez on Fox Sports fourteen fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services and Sure Your Most Prized Possessions kat z R two SA and iHeartRadio Station and Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to Eye on the Ball here Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera, he's Jaganzas got our guy sit in Today it's revolving door with the kids. Welcome to Friday, last week show the week. Yeah, I'm excited twenty four less
than twenty four hours for the game tomorrow. Yeah, although they tell me Steven it's gonna rain tomorrow, it should ring. Well, you know when they do those forecasts, did you did you know? I I think we talked about this one time. When it says fifty percent chance, it doesn't mean fifty percent chance in the city. Its like fifty percent chance around the city. Yeah, that it's various parts. Yeah that fifty percent of the area. Yeah, is gonna have rain? Right, I hope somewhere it's
gonna ring. Maybe it'll miss Kale or not Mchaeale. But there was only stadium last year, wasn't it? Was it rainy? At Utah. Right, last year when we went to Utah, wasn't it pretty rainy? It's always raining this time. I remember going anywhere but southern California this time of the year in the Pac twelve is the wedd is generally not good. So Steve, you guys ready at El Tour we are getting ready where we had
about five thousand and six thousand people come through get their packets. Got about three more thousand to come in tonight and in the morning it's going to be a lot of people. What time is the seventh The big race starts seven seven o'clock seven five seven. Yeah, a lot of things going on, obviously a very pack downtown. Uh, we're we're indoors. We're not outdoors anymore, so that'll be good. What's indoors? We're in the arena where
they have the exhibits. So that's where all the the that's the festivities and stuff right right, So it's not like at the like an armory what was it Armory Park is not indoors? Correct? Oh, okay, correct? And then the party's near there and if you need to get inside, there's going to be inside. Yeah. So there's a band, the rat the race is one hundred and two miles of the big one is in sixty three and then thirty two. All right, so I don't know. I'm interviewing
you now. So for people who you know aren't in the race, you know, what what should they look for and what should they try and avoid and what should they plan for in terms of trying to get around or of course of the day. A good question, because I get that question of all the time. Well, we have maps out everywhere. They've been all over Facebook and on our website, and the directions for what's going to be closed. We have fewer roads closed this year because of construction. In the
previous years they had to kind of zigzag through the city. And now we're going south and this is our third trip down south. Uh So, a lot more freer space, a lot more flagging than closing and cones. Uh So, they'll be It's if you're going in the direction of the ride, it's gonna be tough. But if you're going against the flow, it's not because all those lanes are open. So if you're going away to the north outside on cold and houting and all that, you're good to go. But
if you're coming with the flow. It's going to be tough for me, a little harder. Yeah, And they'll stop you. They'll stop you. We're hoping not for extended periods, but they'll stop you. And I think I heard you say say everything is south of Broadway, south of Broadway, correct, Yeah, everything south of Broadway and the TCC because they're going down to the Vale, going to the Green Valley area, the uh and then
they're circling back up Mission. I mean, I like those the old days when it would actually loop the city through the foothills around you know that, you know the fifty mile ride that I did, Yeah where that started years That started at you'd All Park. Oh you're doing from back in the day, Yeah, Okay, started you'd All Park. Then you went up towards Sabino Canyon in that area, down Houton down below the airport, then up
into downtown. Right, so it's a half loop of the city. But that was back when you know, they would start downtown, go up into the foothills and basically go around the perimeter of the city. Right. And the one you did last was when Morana right now, well last year that was Bullra still like mad at TJ for that because it was uphill. Because it was all uphill, it wouldn't seem like it would be you didn't know.
Look, you're in a car. You don't know that it's uphill, or when you're headed towards Marana that you're going down because you're going down to Tucson. Right, you get on a bike, you know, and Tucson is above Marana, right, you know, and and and and the reason we know that is because when the Santa Cruz River flows, it flows north here, so that that's that's downhill. And so you started, Miranda, come this way. Everything was uphill, sure, even even little uphills,
but it was all uphill. So you started. It was twenty eight miles I think. Yeah, we started at uhcle Marana Park, whatever park it is up there. We just missed. You rode down the front of road like pretty pretty seemingly a straight shoot. Yeah. So my question to you was, or is, at what point did you think, what did I
do? What did I get myself into about about when we got to we were coming down Silver Bell, you know, getting to like getting close to Grant that's like maybe fourteen miles in fifteen miles in Yeah, coming up towards Grant, I'm like, this is this isn't what I expected, right,
you know. I mean I I thought I was in way better shape because I had, you know, because when I when I trained, I was riding from my for my house, which is Sabino Canyon Tanka Verty and I'd come I'd come west and my last final ride was I went I went on the loop, right, So I went from Sabino Canyon and Tanker Verty on the loop all over here to La Choya and back. So if you're going uphill part of the way or some on the way back, you were going
downhill, so that made sense. But this one, you know, it was a straight shot and it was uphill all the way. Yeah, so you were but you made it. I made it. But you're not when you're not a cyclist, right you did this out of kind of a back Yeah, you kind of did this just to prove something to whoever. I'm not sure. So you did and you and you completed it, which, of course, but you're not running hard. I mean you were not spelling.
No, I wasn't. I wasn't hauling, but yeah, you know, I was winded a pretty decent pace I set a pace for myself, I mean, which was so many miles ago, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, Yeah, I think I think it was the twelve thirteen. Yeah. So that and that's me, and I mean that's the past. It's just kind of yeah. I mean, you weren't the last dude coming in. I wasn't the last dude coming in, and people there weren't a lot of people passing me. But I wasn't passing anybody either, Right, Well,
we'll have those people. In fact, I just did a story about a hand cyclist who just so you heard me doing the interview that's raised. He's a hand cyclist, he's gonna he just did five miles last year. He's ready to do thirty two. Uh hand cyclist. Uh. He's you know, disabled with the spine injury. Uh, and more than happy to do it. Right. You had the interview. Give it for those and that's
what inspired that's what's inspiring about the RYE. It's they're they're raising money to make come about five hundred five and a half million for people like like this. Who are you know and you see people doing you know, along the way, you do see hand cyclists and you know, people with different disabilities and stuff like that. You go in and give it out. Yeah, yeah, no, And I have a hard time walking a mile or two, you know, compit winded. I took a nice little walk last night.
It's been nice. Yeah. Well anyways, just uh, you know again, one, give give a heads up to everybody, you know, be on the lookout beyond the lookout for bicyclists everywhere, you know, whether you're around the ride or not. Yeah, let me say this to uh. And I'm spotty speaking that turn, but I'm speaking kind of Uh. We know it's a we know it's a big event, right. It comes out just the fortieth year. We've done this for forty years. I've been
involved for ten. Uh. There will be some delays. We understand that, and we're sorry for that, but it is you know, we can't event be patient. It's a worthy event and understand that whatever little inconvenience you're having, you know, that's your contribution to the call. And it's a one day thing. It's a one day thing out of three hundred and sixty five. I know people are yelling at me right now as I say this, but it is what it is, and it's from seven to about two,
and it starts to seven to four. But you know, the the barriers start to go away about it one or two, you know, and I'm saying, it's it's a free year area to to you know how you avoid any issues with this if you're not, if you're not in the race to go go to the football game. Yeah, yeah, it's about it's above, it's north. Yeah, go to the football game. Go to it, Go to a tailgate, go hang out around the stadium, go there early and go to the game. Yeah. And by the time the
game is over, everything will be done, pretty much done. You can go home without any trouble. Sure you won't even know what happened. Exactly, yeah, exactly. Yeah. Okay, well thanks for that, Jake. Real quick. So we have a game tomorrow. We have our picks today. Yes, we have Jake today. And who else do we have? And we have Eric Warre Walden, excuse me, Eric Walden of the
Salt Lake Tribune. He covers, he covers the youths for them. So he's here, he's getting in the town probably as we speak, he'll be coming on at four or fifteen. Like we always do, try to get a media member from the uh from the other team, to give us a sense of, you know what we can expect from uh from this game, you know, try and get a prediction from him, but UH also just to get a sense of you know, who are the youths. You know,
they're seven and three. You had same record as Arizona. They've lost three conference games and not two like Arizona, and so they're pretty much out of the race, but still have you know, some things they want to prove it. Look, Utah's Utah is a team that they're not gonna you know, unlike some other teams that we may know of. They're not going to come in here kind of with their tent all folded. They're still coming in here to kick Arizona's butt. And uh, you know, they're not
going to quit on the season. But Kyle Kyle, Kyle Whittingham does not know well not let his team do what's spread down. They last I saw it was still one. Yeah, they prochecked it this morning. Arizona's a favorite. Arizona is still the one point for that come on a month ago, two months ago, you think, well, that's what you you know, that's what you're hearing like, you know, one of the one of the podcasts that I that I listened to, and they do you know,
they pick games, and they picked this game. Now they all said, I still can't get I still can't get to taking Arizona over Utah. But they're saying, who, you know, who would have thought that, you know, at this time of the season, Arizona would have a better conference record, have a better chance to get into the Pac twelve Championship, or even have any chance to get into the Pac twelve championship, and would be
favored over Utah. There's nobody in their right mind thought that. Really, they're really praising, you know, the job that Jed Fish is doing, also saying that don't be surprised if some people come looking for him, uh,
you know jobs. But you know, just what a turnaround. It's been a lot of talk at Text A and M. Now, I mean, well Text is gonna they're gonna get somebody bigger than that, you know, Jed's I don't think Jed's the text M level unless text and then says, Okay, we can't spend one hundred and forty million dollars on a coach. We're gonna give Jed four that will take it. But you know, but you know more buzz that that Chip Kelly is is out. Yeah.
Well it was reported last week, les this week, this week, but by website, nobody picked up on it. And then until now it's he picking up that that that if they lose to if they lose to USC, they might not even let him go to the locker room. So wow. Well another thing, another thing with that is who's going to quarterback USC. I guess there's no definitive answer that he's going to quarterback. I saw something ever Saturday, Saturday tomorrow that he might not play tomorrow. I haven't heard
anything. I saw something just as we sat down. I mean, I've heard that there's just no way in hell he's gonna play in any bulk. Yeah, well I saw that earlier. You have to go back and check. He who was not said he was noncommittal. He was noncommittal by playing tomorrow's rivalry game. I don't want that guy on my team, Steve. If I'm in the NFL, I do not want that guy on my I absolutely don't want him on my team. That's a quitter. That's a quitter
in in the in every sense of the word. It should be the one game that you play, and this is you see, this is the one you don't want to miss for anything. If he oh, man, if he doesn't play, I'm getting I'm losing my mind already. He doesn't play, though, I would never draft that guy ever, I wouldn't draft him in the last round if he was still there. Mm hmm. I'm just not taking that guy to lead my team, not investing millions of dollars into
that guy the world. If he's not going to play the bowl game that everybody's doing that, I get it. Don't don't play the bowl game. It's meaningless. Uh, you know, for the most part, fine, I don't have an issue with that. But I do have an issue with is you said you're gonna go to the USC game and you're not gonna play. You're gonna leave all your guys hanging out there, your sor you're you know, your seniors and and you and the rivalry. No way, I
can't. I'd be shocked if he didn't play. But you never know. But Chip is Chip is the one who's in big big doodoo over there. Man. He's a big Yeah. Well, he's kind of well, he hasn't been very he hasn't been the Chip that we used to know. Right, He's kind of like just another dude. Well and and and the and the bigger thing Steve. And again this goes to you know, when remember when Mike, when Mike Stoops got let go. You know, he didn't
have any friends here too to stand up for. He had a couple, but not very many with all of course you stand up for, because he didn't want to be out there doing stuff, doing the other stuff that coaches have to do in the community. And Chips, that guy too, he doesn't do any of that stuff over there is what I'm doing, and he hates it. He all he ever does is piss off the boosters and the
and the donors and and and and so nobody likes him. When when it comes time to say, you know, hey, let's keep him, if you don't have anybody saying let's keep him, then they're not going to keep you. Well, if that's the case, and and and we all know that's the criteria now because the a d's job now is not also to run the programs, to shake hands and kiss babies, chase down some money, right, uh, And and that's what they do. That's just what it
is today. Guess who would be a perfect fit for that job at UCLA? Should I even say we know who you're talking about? It? Honestly? I mean that's which which just says what he which is said, that's what that's You know again, he's in Jetfish has embraced that here and and we and we said we said this before the year. If he does well, it's a good thing because that means they've done well. But the problem is it's all about timing. Who would think that Chip Kelly would be in
trouble and who would think it would have been seventy three exactly exactly. All right, we're gonna take our first break. We're gonna be back. Jake Fisher is gonna join us. Haven't tked to him in a couple of weeks he will let him planning bloat about his prediction at the beginning of the year when he thought a stick around. Hey, welcome back to you. I on the Ball here Fox Sports forteen fifty. I'm Steve, He's Jake. You have Jake Fischer, the procrastinator on the show today. How you doing casinator? Prognostic, procrastinatory, procrastinatorize whatever the You're not a proctologist, are you? Never? I'm not gonna apologize for my views. I know I read your Twitter right know. Yeah, you should have saw the one today. That one was fun. What did you What was the argument today? It was just you don't think like
I do. So you're a terrible person. So I called the guy at Douche and told the shut up and go away. Hey, right to the point, man, right to the point. It's always best I am you. Uh So, how many people were like you? You think who believe that they would win eight nine games. Well, I think there's a lot of us, like former players and just folks that are close to the program
that see, you know, how far they've come. Obviously, I talked to a lot of folks that are close to the program, and you know, they talk about how how good we're going to be, and how we've got a bunch of NFL talent on the team, and you know, they really believe in jet Fish and you know, I kind of base my my bets on that, to be honest with you, I thought we were going to get eight wins. I mean, I thought that the eighth woman was going to be in a Bowl game, and even I under soul them here
to this point. So I just think there's a lot of us that, you know, we've seen how far Jed and those guys have, you know, taken the program. And again, I mean you just watch some of the games and you're like, that guy's going to be an NFL player, that guy's going to be an NFL player. A couple of teams I was on, even though we went to Bowl games, it's like maybe one or two guys would stick with an NFL roster. So it's just one of those
things. To where as long as we have good coaching and these guys are motivated to you know, their hearts are in the right place, they're going to do well well well. And again, you know you talked about the talent. I mean it's you know, you look at it, especially especially as you know and we all know, you know, offensive defensive lines at Arizona have never been the thing as as as the way they are now.
And you know, when you're talking about guys you know who are NFL talents, there's a whole bunch of them on the two lines and that's we've just never had that here. Yeah, And to be honest with you, I mean, just on that offensive line. You know, I'm not entirely sure about Plito because you know, I haven't seen a lot. You know, he hasn't played very much this year and I haven't seen you know, I don't really specifically watch wen no mo, I need to start watching more.
I saw a couple of awesome blocks he had. He had that one crack blocker. I think they were going to trap and you know, they just let that three technique go through and he absolutely just murdered the kid. And you know, I didn't know he had that kind of explosion. I know he had quick feet and he's a big boy, but you know he got Savna and Morgan. I mean, those guys are both going to be first round draft picks, and it's just like you just start with those two.
I mean, have we ever had two first round draphics or just two guys get drafted in the first couple of rounds? You know, on the same line, we probably have, but it's just been such a long time defensive line. We're able to swap guys in and out. You know, they're getting only you know, twenty five to thirty snaps each, you know, keeping each other fresh, you know, you keep in. This last game, it was a little bit different. I mean, you have a guy
with an NFL talent arm. He's also very agile, so that one was a little bit different. But I mean, these guys are making plays in the backroll for the most part. They're they've been pretty decent against the one. So we're gonna have most home back. So I mean, imagine what next year is gonna look like. Let me ask you about about the you know, you mentioned the twenty five snap you were aligned back as a linebacker. You were in there a lot, right, I mean, you didn't
you didn't come out and get off the field very much. But talk about that that whole issue of how many snaps you play and how many snaps, how many snaps do you want to play in the course of a game, particularly if your alignment, huh, you know, what's your what's your max that you can you know, just go give it all and and not ever you know, be you know, lagging or tired or whatever. Well,
it's kind of on your you know, on your own terms. I mean, you know, as a defensive lineman, you want to get three an ounce as much as possible, and uh, you know, especially when you get uh, you know, these teams into the past obvious situation. You want to be able to get the big guys out of there that might be more run stoppers and get some guys in there that can just kind of pen their ears back and after the quarterback. If you're an offensive line and you
want to you want to have nine or ten play drives. You just want to wear down the other team, you know. So it's kind of different for both sides of the ball. But as a linebacker, you guys got to remember my junior year, our defense after the first you know three or four games, had way too many people that were just obviously injured and we were just never the same out the Oregon game. And I mean there were some games where you're out there for damn near hunterd snaps, Like at that
point, it's not fun anymore, you know what I mean. It's just you know, your your tied hands on the knees, you've obviously been hit multiple times throughout the entire game. You know, worst game I've ever been a part of was that dan Nevada game, last game in my junior year where you know, one of the one of the the strength guys had the damn near carry me off the field because I've been hitting the head way too
many damn time. My senior year, it was much better because we had a much better defense, and you know, we kept the snack count down for the most part. And it was really nice because you have some guys you can fall back on, uh you know, if you need to, he get a breeder. But I think these defensive coaches are doing a good job. They brought in a lot of great, you know, really great pieces, uh you know that want to do what they want to do.
And uh, you know, if you if you have all of your you know, uh energy here at the end of the game, then you're gonna be a better player for it. Into that he's talking to his dog, Yeah, talking to his dog. Hey, Jake, are you there well Paris? Yeah? Man, Okay. So we talked about this yesterday and we thought it maybe kind of odd. Maybe you agree or don't agree, but the Kadem is going to be the captain here on the field tomorrow.
Uh. And we talked, you know, he's kind of been kind of like underrated as an ex guy here even though he was fantastic when he was here. So I posed this question to to Jay, Uh, do you think that Scooby is probably more well known than Kadem even though Kadem probably had a better career. Uh, to be honest with you. In the Tucson area, No, in the Tuson area, Kadem's a legend. I mean,
damn here, broke everything record in the book in high school. And you know he was there in CDEO when they are good and they're they're back to being a really good program. But you know, back when they were awesome, you know, getting the state titles, and whatnot. And then you know from his softmore year on he started and you know, he did extremely well. So I don't think how the tuc Sound area is. I
think they're both very well known. I mean, they both won national records and you know, both of them, you know, they should be held in every single Arizona Lolcat's heart because I mean, hell, they both played tremendous football for us. So I'm not going to go and say one's more popular and well known than the other, but I will tell you in Tucson, just because you know, Kadein grew up there, he's definitely, you know, a little bit more of a celebrity. All right, Okay,
you played with both of those guys. Are they really different guys? Same guy? How did they take the but the notoriety that they were getting here? You know, they both heard a lot just because they had some fantastic seasons, but it didn't really stop them for prepared in the way that they wanted to. And uh, I mean they both go out and play every single snap. I mean obviously you guys saw it just like I did.
You know, the Scooby's either hitting somebody and if he makes a mistake, he's doing it at a million miles an hour, looking like he's running around. You know, they get, you know, just a mad person. And then Kadeen, I don't think I saw very many times where somebody would hit him, you know, whether it was one person or two guys that
would push him forward. He'd always find a way to roll, you know, roll with the ball talk, you know, just kind of bounce off a defender, bastra yards whether you know, big time first down, big time touchdown. I mean, if anybody wants to know what that looks like, go lost the Oregon game, you know, right, So I mean they both played tremendous football. Both were all Americans for a reason. One awards, you know, stuff like that. So I mean they both deserved
it. Yeah, so let me ask you this and maybe Jake maybe explain a bit of me. Uh So, a few years back, anything with Jed Firscott. Here people are saying if Arizona could just be Utah, right, eventually be Utah. And the question was today or yesterday right about Utah? And didn't you ask the questions I did? So go ahead and tell Jasey, well what I what I said was and last year We had this conversation when they were getting ready to play Utah and and Jed said, you
know, we aspire to be a program like Utah. There are a lot of people here who took that like, wait a minute, don't we want to be better than Utah? Aren't we? You know, isn't in Utah the little brother that you know? Why are we trying to be like our little brother? Because that's how people see Utah from, you know, whac days and stuff like that. But when you look at what they've done, including going to two rose bulls in a row, it's like, why wouldn't
you want to be Utah? So we asked Jed today yesterday, where do you think you are on that track now? Because you know here you are, You've got the same same season record, you're ahead of them in the conference standings, you're ranked higher than them, your favorite to beat them. Where are you? And he said, we are still a long ways away. I mean, how do you feel about trying to be Utah? Trying to be Utah? Is? I mean, where else in the past twelve
would you want to be besides them? An Oregon right now? You know what I mean? I mean, you look at SD and they had an atrocious defense. I wouldn't want to be a team that has to rely on having a Heisman candidate every single year, which it seems like they will under Lincoln Riley. You know, Washington, I don't know how they're gonna be after they lose Penis and those you know, wide receivers that they have that
are both going to be in the NFL next year. You look at Utah, they don't even have Cam Rising and there's still what seven and three, and they just took Washington to the end of the game. You know, the only blip on their radar basically has been you know, that game against Oregon. I mean, you know in then Oregon State. But Oregon State's a hell of a team. So, you know, if you want to be a team in this conference besides Utah, pitt, you know Oregon because
Dan Lanny, I think has them playing awesome defense. They're running the ball as good as ever, and he's kind of got that hitting the face mentality, but I mean, coach winning hands awesome. They have guys that are sticking around for a while. You know, they're not bringing in these five star kids. They're bringing in guys that they have to develop kind of what
you know, what we have to do here in Tucson. And if he's able to keep that coaching staff together for a while and he's able to continue to develop, then yeah, we might be able to becoming the top. But it's not the Utah goal. It's not the Utah that you know. As soon as they came into the Pac twelve, they beat a couple of Pack twelve schools because you know, they have some down years, but then
the next couple of years we beat the heck out of them physically. It's just one of those things where hey, they caught up and they're doing it better than damn near everybody else in the conference. I agree with that completely, right, No, because they are they are. If they're not the model, there's the second model. I mean again, but but you know, Jake's right, do you want to be USC where you know, just like you're awful undecided the ball, so you're great over here and how people
were doing seeing why the hell can't you be better than that? Theerly don't want to be UCLA, sure right, sure you know, so you don't want to be U c l Ai. No, especially with chip Kel you don't want to be that. Yeah, so you know, I mean he doesn't have the Nike money, so he's not going to do as well.
Right, you know, we don't know if Washington's going to sustain what they have, as you said, after Michael Pennock's leaves, but Oregon just seems to keep doing you know, whoever's there, they do it well with them. And then as you said, you well and then Dan Landing, you know, like I said, he has that you know, hits in the face. But now he's got that Phil Knight money back at him, so he's gonna be able to bring in guys that are still form five star kids.
But uh, you know having that uh I suct the mentality was speed and size. Well that's gonna be scary. Wait a second, that said, I'm sure, uh back in they think as a kid coming out in high school and you you're Chick Fisher and you were offered who would you play for? Who would you play for? So what I played for was in when I was coming up Oregon obviously, you know, honestly, wasn't that
great. You know, I just saw Arizona beat Oregon. You know, I think it was Nixon that had just gone down, but we beat them. And then my freshman year, honestly, they went to uh you know, the Rose Bowl, but it was down to them and us, and if we would have ground Kowski, I don't think that game would have been with a two peschdowns. So, to be honest with you, coming out of high school, uh FC had an insane defense. I mean they had
five first round drafts on the defense every damn year under Carroll. They were winning Heisman's every year. So I mean, the only difference between them and today's see if today's see gives up forty points a game or hoping to score fifty, right, yeah, no, but you would play for Landing. Come on, you would play for him. Oh he would have been fun to play for. Yeah, absolutely, But you know, Jet, this seems like he'd be really fun to play for, and so you know,
would he him? You know what I mean? So again, right now in the pack, if you're trying to mold the program after anybody other than you thought it would be organ Yeah, it makes a lot of sense because they just keep going, Okay, no, we need a score, yes, or for tomorrow we win by ten? Wow? Okay, I don't know what the hell the score is gonna be we win by ten, Okay, I think it's and the difference will be. The difference is going to be our defense is as long as we don't allow them to make any of
those big plays. With Colorado, I think we would have won by fourteen to twenty one if we didn't get pen on the Dan two yard line every four plays and then have to kick it, and we had a bunch of slow guys on that uh you know, punt team happen to basically, you know, just make sure that they don't make a big play, block it out of the end zone, you know, do whatever the hell they were
doing. So, you know, I think that as long as we're solid on special teams, which is you know that in defensive first half I was very worried about during the Colorado game. But they're getting the short field every damn play. So we just need to be, you know, solid on all three phases, and I think we'll win. All right. I ain't gonna I ain't gonna dispute you because doing too well. Yeah, you kicked, but how about the zone against Duke game. We didn't even get to

Steve Rivera and Jacob Salaz they have their eye on the ball on Tucson's sports station yet Fox Sports fourteen to fifteen. Hey, welcome back to you. I boat here on Fox Sports Sports is fifteen. I'm Steve Rivera here, Jacob Zalas got a guy sitting here working the board. I want to ask you real quick about a couple of things. Let's go something
thats us first, the PAC twelve. So the PAC twelve is alive and well according to people with Washington State ties at Oregon State ties. So they have a boatload of money until they won't have a boutload of money if things change, right, what's gonna happen there? God man, Well, what it sounds like to me is that, you know, the the Oregon State and Washington State have been granted the rights to be control all that money that's
and that was money for everybody, right, that's it. I'm hearing there's like four hundred million in current money that's at stake in this that was going to be distributed, distributed to all the schools and what was supposed to happen, Yeah, well after this fiscally fiscally so you know, they won this injunction and says they they're they're in control of it, but then there was a stay put on it because well when the judge granted them their injunction,
he said, but that you're in control, but you have to do this fairly and without harming the other schools. So they're going to get to decide, but they can't just say well, we're going to keep it all okay, so the Arizona will get some money, right right. The question is, you know what, what what a judge or whoever decides to be fair. Now, the thing got the thing got stayed while the the other ten schools appeal the the the approval of that injunction. So I don't know how
what's going to happen after that. But the other thing you're hearing is that Washington, Washington and Oregon State are entering into this alliance with the Mountain West and they're gonna pay for a bunch of games with that money. Sure, you know they're gonna use that money to be able to get games and pay all these schools to play them, whether they play them at home or away or whatever. And and what what the Mountain West apparently is gonna do is
is both of our mics, oh, I'm back on. But apparently what the mount West is gonna do is they're going to reduce their conference games from eight to seven and eat and they're each one of them is gonna play either Oregon State or Washington State. They're they're gonna pay for those games out of this money. The one thing they're not allowed to do is poach the Mountain
West team to start a new league. But it sounds like, you know, even though the judge granted them the the the injunction that says they get to you know, they're in charge, he's not gonna let them, say, you get all the money. Okay. So some of that money possibly could be used to help Arizona get out of its financial one, but it's money that they were expecting. Yeah. Yeah, it's money that was already in their budgets before all this stuff happened. With this seems like could be
more than twenty five thirty thousand dollars. I mean, well, I say, yeah, see that my bank sucks. My bank answer, so I checked Covie's bounces. No, no, you're right. Millions. So then yeah, then they'll fifteen and so and and that's what the one judge say said, you know you're in charge, but we're not gonna let you just ord the thing, right Okay. So then my second question was, uh,
and just keep an eye on the phones. You were in Vegas recently and I was there in June and it was the start of or the middle of the construction of all the roads. So they said back then, it's gonna be a disaster. Oh you can't get around, blah blah blah. You were just saying, how was it. It wasn't hard to get around, but you could see that, you know what you because all the construction is done right, so the roads were open, you know. I mean
we literally going from one place to another. We're on the Formula one track, right. We stayed at a hotel where we stay was right when they're coming up on the finish line on Tropicana Avenue. So you know, we come out in a cab to go to the west gate and we're on the racetrack and then we you know, and so it's, oh, you know, kind of open at the end and then we are out into the regular, regular surface streets. But the hotel that we were staying out you look
out the window and the track was right below us. So it looks cool. Oh, it looks really cool. They've built this massive grand stand around the corner from where we were staying, and we went right by it and they said, that's a permanent building. It's well two buildings, it's one on each side of the track. Because this is a ten year deal, right, what it is it's four years for sure, with an option to
do to go up to ten years. So they built this permanent facility right near where we were, and it's massive, you know, it's it's it's where the race starts. You know, it's the paddock they call it, it's the it's a grand stand, it's the skyboxes, it's all this stuff that's built there. And that's a permanent deal. It's very cool. And in fact, during one of our breaks, I was looking at a watching a video of a of a driver, you know, on the track,
and it looks really cool. The thing is, Steve, what you're hearing is that it's a disaster from an economic standpoint, that people aren't coming, they're staying away because of it. That I you know, there was a guy on Twitter and I can't remember who it was. He said, I got a room at the Flamingo, which is right on the track. Right. I could look out my window and there's a track. I got room for eighteen bucks, eighteen dollars. Before you couldn't get a room for it,
right, he said. The restaurants are empty, the hotels are empty. People aren't going. Now there's going to be people who have come in for the race, but they're not filling up the hotel else he said, it's been an economic disaster. It's what you're hearing. Let's not go because it's like yoga. Don't go there because two people don't. Yeah, don't go this weekend. Yeah, you know, I mean it was it was busy last weekend, you know, but I could see I could see that.
You can envision the problems they were having building all this stuff and roads being closed, right, having to build all this stuff. So we're you know, we're there and it's all built, so every it's ready to go. So so the streets are open. Traffic wasn't horrible, It wasn't hard to get to our hotel. But now they well now they have people who go show up, not necessarily to see the race, but to continue to
fill up the hotels. You know, if you're on if you're inside the loop of the track, which is basically almost the whole strip, right, it's it's the MGM Grand it's Planning Hollywood, it's Paris, it's you know, the hotels on that side of the strip. But then you go to the other side of the strip in place like the Bellaggio and Caesars and and you know all of those, you know they're right on the track as well. You know a lot of what those what are great about those properties you
can't experience because the track is in the way. Like you can't go see the fountains right now, right, I mean you can't go see them from the street like we normally at the Bolagio that that that you would go see. You can't walk to Caesars because you know, like we we you know, the place we started in near playing Hollywood, and we wanted to go across the way to where the Aria is because the street you had to go for a bridge, but there there's nobody there. Well, well, I
guess we'll see what happens upter this weekend. But it's just Saturdays. It's still very cool looking. Yeah, well there's that. Yeah, so you know, but you know again after the race tomorrow they got to break it down and what's that going to be like? So who knows how long it's gonna take. It's over. It's that night. The race starts at eleven o'clock two some time pm PM. Okay, well it's still well did you see what happened last night? No, you didn't see this, but so
they had. Yeah, so they had a practice. We're gonna do an hour of you know practice run letting, letting the drivers you know, run the track. And it was on ESPN, and so like eight minutes into it, a car, you know, driving through your straight away, no, No, one of the the race cars driving through the normal straightaway. As it went by, it pulled. It basically pulled up a man not
a man, but like a like like a small manhole cover. It pulled the whole frame of it out and sparked and flying all over the place. And I'm sure it damaged the car because this thing was not built to withstand the whatever you call the g forces or whatever of a car going that fast over the top of it. That when the car went over the top of it, it basically if you can imagine a whole manhole cover and it's frame being pulled out of the street, that's what happened eight minutes into the truck
into the practice, and they had to halt the practice. And they've got to fix that before the race tomorrow, all of them, because there's they got they gotta go make sure all of them are are are fixed. Yeah, I said, Carlos Sis Siens crashes into Las Vegas man drink cover. It was it was a drain cover, So it wasn't it wasn't the size of probably a you know, probably less than a foot across, you know, in diameter. But you know, there's video of this car going over
the top of it. It basically explodes, so that hundreds of thousands of dollars car is done. And you don't think about, you know, how fast these cars are going on what is otherwise a city street and what the pull is going to be on a car going over at the top of something like that. Now, they got to go make sure every single one of those on the track can withstand a car going over there two hundred miles an hour. Wow, it's a messy it right now. It's a complete mess
and a complete disaster. And you know, I haven't heard the laces because there's supposed to be tonight, there's supposed to be another hour of these practice runs, you know, and well then there's and then there's qualifying tomorrow morning and then they race tomorrow night. Yeah. I saw he's just kind of just the car is going, but it just blow it. Yeah, just like a big ball of fire. Yeah. Wow, well, no, he's out of the race. Well, I'm sure you can probably get the
car, he said. I think he said, there's a couple of people who said they're out of the race. Wow. Okay, we'll get about a minute left. It was kind of hanging out and there's a there's a Formula one talk for you. That's the only time we've ever talked about Formula One. It's really cool, though, I gotta say, I'm I mean, I don't know that I'm gonna watch it, but I'm paying attention to it. I'm watching videos of you know, people, the cars, you
know, running on the track. It looks really cool. They're going by these hotels, are going flashing by them. It goes around the sphere, right, they make this slow turn going around the sphere over there that you know, all that looks really cool. And like I said, my room where I was saying, I was looking down right on right on the track. Yeah, and it was really cool. Cool. Okay, all right, that's the first hour pretty much. Okay, let's take our break.
We're gonna come back. We've got Eric Walden from the Salt Lake Tribune coming up in the during the hour and since got breaking new. All right, we'll be right back.
