I'm Steve, He's Jake. Now we have one with breaking news. This is I on the Ball, Breaking news on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Happy Friday to everyone out there.
From yours truly, mister Greedy two shoes, starting off breaking news with an official announcement today from Churchill's Downs, you have the suspension of Bob trainer Bob Baffort because he indirectly back handedly said yeah, I was at Boult. Yeah, he accept the responsibility, I think, and that's yeah, that's and that's yeah. Yeah, and three years is enough. And he wanted to get back. He wants to get back. They want, you know what
they wanted. Sure it helps, it helped, come on, yeah, you know, I mean even if you're a good guy, if you're a bad guy. But he's needed, he's needed in the racing profession, right right, you know, it depends what side you're on. Sure, And and the thing about think of it is is that you know what happened is clearly. I mean it could have been you know, could have been cheating, could have been an accident, could have been a lot of different things.
You know. The thing of it is, okay, let's move past, you know, and and and get on with it and both will be better for it. Exactly exactly where I was going with that. So, yeah, you were that was good for him, and he's not going to hold a grudge over any I think he has a lot of jade. Dude, all right going to college football. Utah State as official announced today that they have fired Blake Anderson. Do you could you do you know the circumstances?
Can you talk of the circumstances? So I believe in April of twenty twenty three, it says right here, yeah, there was a a player was arrested, dude, alleged domestic uh, and before instead of going straight to university officials and reporting it, he tried to investigated finding mission right right, So so I don't know the circumstances with stuff that happened at Baylor. Uh, the guys shooting teammate, shooting another and I forget Bliss day Bliss
Bliss and there's other things that he was trying to figure it out. And right, so, so I didn't know this. I thought that the coach had got in trouble, but it was a player. I guess you got to let the authorities handle the business, right, Yes, I mean, Look, most schools and and largely because of what happened at Baylor, you know, the title stuff and all that, put policies and rules in place
to say very specific if something happens. Look in Arizona went through this with a bunch of you know, a bunch of you know, player things and stuff that they didn't feel got handled properly. They put rules in place that say, if something happens, particularly a domestic abuse situation, you report it
and that's it, and you let authorities handle it. And what I read on what he did was he went and he spoke to the alleged victim and spoke to the roommate and try and we'll try to figure it out before he said anything to the school. And that's a big giant fat no. No, Well, let me tell you something here. And I don't know the circumstances right now on the top of my head without googling it. With the track coach here with the burden that how that turned out big, a big,
big mess. It was a big mess. And then and then the Orlando h Bloom the actor, Yeah is the actor of Orlando? Yeah, that guy, yeah Brown, Yeah, Yeah, we know what you're talking about. Okay, you know, uh, you know all all those things. Those rules are there for a reason, and now it's to make and that's to make sure to maintain the integrity of the investigation because the lives are at stake, life of the victim, live of the person that's being accused.
You want to make sure that that gets handled properly in case something didn't happen. Right, the whole Duke lacrosse team thing, right, So a coach is not supposed to go do that, right, that's not his right. That's yeah, exactly, that's not his So he yeah, so he's fired, so and and and you know what, he's already gonna he's gonna sue because that it's all alive. The investigation. They called it a sham investigation that they just wanted to get rid of him, and so that that's
why they did what they did. But dude, you know, it's very simple. Somebody tells you they're being abused by one of your players, you go straight to the You go straight to whatever you know is in your policy, whoever it is that you go to, whether it's campus police or somebody in in the department or whatever, human resources, not probably even human resources, because it's an athlete somewhere, they have there's a policy laid out and
they have enough resources. Nowadays there's a political or you're supposed to do that, and he clearly did not do that. You know, I've been here a long time. You've been here a long time that that has happened before. Of course it has proof time. Yeah, you know, and you can't do that, especially now with all the social media and stuff. Stuff is gonna get out. Stuff gets out. So anyways, so he's fire bummer free him. Yeah, just what, He'll land somewhere. So he's
a good coach, He'll land somewhere. Assistant to the NFL. Troy Aikman, former NFL player, Uh, what are you talking about? Hall of Famer Dallas Cowboys, one of Steve's boys. Back when I cared, Yeah, what I cared? He submitted a bid for a trademark on the use of the number eight, and now Lamar Jackson is disputing it, but it has potential to go to court. You si the number eight? Yeah,
yeah, I saw that. Troy Aikman has the word eight right now on some of his luggage and he posts about it sometimes and people recognize it. But Lamar Jackson wants to take the number eight for himself because he's a current right now himself as a trademark. He wants to do it too. Oh is the Finders keepers? I don't know. I was here long before you, son. I was number twelve, So I have no problem issue with the number eight. What you do about nothing? Did you have a number?
Yeah? Thirteen? Like thirteen. It's thirteen was a unlucky lucky number for me. But well I love thirteen and a lot of different things. My brother, Yeah, my brother je g Yeah, yeah, I'm sure he wins a lot. Yeah he does well, luckily, come on you you've told me stuff that he bets like ten teen parties and doesn't know what he's doing and he hits it. Oh that's right, No, you said maybe maybe maybe. No Jeans Jean's that guy. Yeah, thirteen is like,
isn't it isn't? It is in his email address yeah, so the thirteen whatever. Hopefully Lamar Jackson won't have any grudge against sticking with the Ravens and the NFL. The Ravens have signed former Bears safety Eddie Jackson, a two time Pro Bowler. M H. Seems like they're just trying to get as much help as they can. Yeah, they need help, especially on the defense. I mean again, they keep having these great seasons and then they poopy. No worries, all right? Yeah so yeah, all right,
good for them, Good for him. He finally he's stuck with the team, sticking in the NFL. Former Dolphins and Cardinals running backing On Drake announced his retirement today. Oh wow, I didn't who Yeah he was. He had that miracle play against the Patriots, I believe. But I'm trying to what college do you go to? Alabama? Alabama? Yeah? Bowl? He had that kickoff with big kickoff in the first Clemson game for Alabama.
All right, so he had eight years. I was gonna say it wasn't around that long eight years, but again, running backs, man, that's it. Eight years is probably pretty good. Yeah. Yeah, and he stayed healthy for most of it. Yeah, yeah, all right, going to college football Alabama is naming their field after recently retired head coaching Sabin Field at Bryan Denny Stadium. Yeah, they put a video out on that. It was kind of cool, you know, you know, he's really
taking on a whole new persona. He's become likable. He's funny. Imagine what pretty dang smart she's got. He wasn't he's not are Did he come up as cranky? Yes, cranky, cranky, cranky, cranky? I don't know, maybe cranky. He was cranky, but he's now all legitimately all the best, all time college. Even his wife thought he was cranky.
He did an interview and I can't remember I heard the clip and I remember who if it was with, if it was with, whoever it was, But he said he realized he was cranky when his wife told him he was cranky. I think so where his wife said, you really need to pay attention to what you sound like, because you sound like you're mad all the time. Wait wait, let me transition here, Gab, if you're listening, give us a call. Jays sound cranky, because see Jason cranky
sometimes on Fridays. What are you talking about Today's Friday? He was telling us, Like he said, he only brings up brings. You're not gab call us pleasant, dude, you're trying to rusty sometimes. Okay, okay, Well, all I know is that there's a video out there saving he's up like forty nine against some Vision three school and he's put it to him he could, so he called the time out because the defense got the coverage wrong. Up forty nine nothing with like ten seconds left, so and they
got him, but he got him. So yeah, crank cranky wins. But he's yeah, no, it does. We talked about that too. That's why Mochi is who she who she is. There's the reason why they're good coaches. I think people are gonna like him as a as a he got really because he has been one. He's really damn smart. Yeah right, and he and he tells good story. There's a reason he was you know, he won because he he knew how to coach. And I'm talking x's and o's kind of stopped, right, and so it's going to be
interesting to see. And if you played for him, come on, if you played for him, aren't you gonna bust your assh? Yeah, because you don't want to disappoint him, right, and that's half the battle, because he'll kill you or yeah or yeah. That's why he played tough for him and Mochi too. You may not respect you, but you played hard for me because you know that she's there to help you. As cranky as he is. Like you said, he is opening up Song Sports Center.
He was at the media days for the SEC and the anchor got him to say, go dogs. Oh wow. Interesting. I mean, I didn't think he'd ever say anything than roll tie. But here we are dogs, I guess. To the Arizona Softball News incoming Arizona freshman Emma Cavanon, I don't know how to say the last time. I'm sorry, I'm betraying this really wrong. She was named the nfc A high School Catcher of the Year and they got a catcher coming from Washington. Yeah, from Washington. So
interesting? The future? Yeah, okay, all right? Uh, last thing I got. Like I said, I like to end on some fun stuff. There's an image of killing Clark that's on the hood of a race car. The for that the brickyard for NASCAR. Wow wow, have you ever had your face on the could have a NASCAR car? I've never had my face on a Wow, that's cool. We're here on radio for a reason. I know, Steve, I do know that I do, I
do. I am very well. I'm shameful that you put us on a logo, that we have our logo with our faces on it, exactly. Okay, all right, that's it, okay. US Open News. A lot of big names did not make the cut. The most prominent at the most prominent those Rory McElroy was he I think eleven over par so he I watched him butcher his his round, Tiger Woods fourteen over party shot seventy nine, seventy seven. He's out. The US Open champ Price and the Shambo
didn't make the cut. Doctor Hovlin did not make the cut. Tony Fenow did not make the cut. My pick of the week, Tommy Fleetwood did not make the cut. I'm really pissed it in I've got a grudge probably for about a month against him. A lot, I mean a lot of big names. Shane Lowry, who was I think the twenty nineteen champ is in the lead. Not many big names up there. Justin Rose is up there, of course, Scotti schefferd He's tied for fourth, Jason Day is
up, There's Andrew Shoffley's up there. Man, they've the conditions they've been playing in. It was like thirty five mile an hour Windnesday. They were just whipping and there were there were the winds were so strong that balls sitting on the green were moving. Wow. It was I mean it was crazy. But uh Rory McElroy had a stretch of three holes where he went five over the guy who won last week, Robert McIntyre, Scottish Dude won the
Scottish Open. He opened his first four holes he had a seven and an eight. I saw a guy taking eight on a part three. Uh, what's his name? Neeman? I can't remember his last day. He took an eight on the part He took a five eight on the party. I could have played that whole better than that. I could have. I could have. I'm not saying I would have, but I could bocking Neeman. He took an eight on a part three. I don't know if he made
the cut, but it was there was some tough going out there. I think Justin Thomas, who was among the leaders going in, he shot forty five on the front nine, which is a crazy number. So and on his way to was seventy eight today. So man, some crazy stuff going on. It's a tough, tough conditions. Oh look, I'm just looking at steal. Phil Mickelson did make the cut. He got in. He got in there, so crazy tournament should be fun. Okay, So now
we're gonna go to break and get a hold of wrestling. Guy wrestling guru, mister Tom Ortiz, sort of Sunny Sunnyside High School ASU wrestler, ASU coach. I think he's in the National College Fame of Wrestling. I think it was a three time All American, That's what I read. Now he's coaching in Phoenix, yep, but so our high school. So now he's bringing a camp here with a big name. Yeah, big name, right, So stick around for one or two songs, guys, Tom Ortiz.

This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jay Gonzalez on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Subscribe now to the podcast on the iHeartRadio app just searching I on the Ball. Hey, welcome back to I'm the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve he j We got along with us and now we have Tom Mortise,
wrestling coach extraordinaire, wrestling legend, maning legend from Sunnyside. And I'll say this hurts to say, but Asu, I get it that there was no wrestling program in Tucson for you. So we're okay with that. And then a coach over there. So long history in wrestling, Tom, How are you doing? Yeah? I have a long history in wrestling and it plays into MMA. I'm doing great. I always tell people I'm a legend in my own mind. So that's what you think about yourself. That count?
Sure? Sure, nobody let me tell you Jay's he does all these great events and he's gonna have one here in two weeks and we'll talk about that. But he had his. You still have your w federation thing here? You bought some, well, we'll fighting federation. I sold that and then I fought in it when I was fifty one. Back in twenty eighteen, they did a documentary and it's caught off. It's on too b you want to go watch it on It's called Alho and it's on to Blet. Let
me ask you, was the viejo a little local do? Yeah? You know, it's just that, you know, you remember growing up in your life and you hear different things and people say, I regret it, I didn't box, I regret I and do this, and people said I had kids, so I decided to get a job, and I already had all my kids, all four of them, so I just decided to do a pro mm a fight and see what happened. So but if you want to know what happened, you got to watch Tony an hour and six minutes.
It's good though. Well, well, Tom, you know obviously you know from a you know, a historic wrestling program in Tucsono over at Sunnyside took that up to a su You know, we've had we've had their current wrestling coach on that, you know a number of times. Every time he wins the state championship, he comes on the show. Tell us about it, Yeah, tell yeah, Tony Leone. As a matter of fact, it's funny brought up Sunnyside Wrestling. They just had a national champion at Junior Nationals,
the hardest tournament in the world, Fargo. It's called Fargo Nationals, but it's really Junior Nationals. Sergio Viega. Okay, he's a he just won Wow on Sunday. But what's the say no, yesterday, Wow the day before. But he wanted, he want. It's a top tournament and now he's going to get to wrestle and who's number one? They give you a go ticket. So he just he's a national champion and he's good and
he's going to be a senior. But he's already committed to Core. Now Ivy League kids going to well, isn't that where we're Audrey human is uhumb? Is that where she was? So? Yes, Tom, what the heck is in the water at Sunnyside with all these great wrestlers. I think it's the dynasty started with Don coach track back in the seventies. He ended
up being a coach and haventy four and that's where it started. I wrestled for him, and I also wrestled for Sanchez, and then Richard Sanzees became the coach and my brother was you know, wrestled at Sunnyside and his good friend Joe Romero and so then you had Eddie Herabano and ZA champion from Sunnyside and eighty five. I was a three time Model American from Sunnyside and then then I left Iowa State coach. But Eric Larkin, you know, national
newsa Horges winner. Then you got Rby doing what he did, and then you had the Gallic brothers from Sunnyside doing what they did, National champ at Iowa State and all Americans. So I just think it's a it's a tradition. It's now it's like heritage, you know, like I got to respect
my elders and I got to go get a college degree. So all those guys I mentioned, they got all it rby just graduated from Penn State so it's and you got the Rivera Brothers in the Military Academy, and it is it's going very well for Sunnyside and the strong community support, and and you go in there and there's a bunch of eight year olds sattling. Yeah, well that's it, right, I mean, it's it's become a community. It's sort of become an identity for the whole Sunnyside community over there. That
okay, you know, we wrestle, you know. And by the way, I was corrected. Audrey Humanez is going to Lehigh. Yes, he's going to Lehigh, which is a great another great school. But yeah, she's fortunate to go to a university like that, but she deserves it. She was second on the Olympic team right trials, So so I keep taling her. She's going to win twenty twenty eight in La there you go. In four years, she's gonna win the Olympic champion. And Sunnyside has never
had Olympic champion. So we'll see who's first. Rby is going in for Mexico By in twenty twenty four, well, in a couple of weeks. In a couple of weeks, that's who he Sai. Yeah, RB y Rby he's RB White representing Mexico. Okay, that makes sense. No, cool? Cool? So so let's talk about what's going on here. In a couple of weeks, you're you're having your your thing, your thing with the wrestlers here, and then you're beging a big name. Who's the big
name? Oh, it's a sam Portio, uh wrestling camps. And then we got together with Caane Belascas is coming UFC champion, Uh, you know All American wrestler for Arizona State Heavyweight. You know, battest man on the planet, and he's gonna do He's doing it for free. He's playing for his own plane ticket. He just wants to get back to the community and help the kids and and he knows, you know, the south Side.
You know, we're gonna have it at Pueblo High School on August third, and it starts at ten am. And I just thought Caine was going to do with a couple of my other russ or John Moraga who has fought and you'll see and Brian Stiff who wrestled from me at Arizona State. He's a two time All American. But then I saw my name on it. Sammy put my name on it. I didn't even know it was one of the clinicians. You know the hours, the hours along and the page low.
Well, you know, Sammy, he's going to try to get his brother there. He's got to get his brother there. Yeah, for sure. You know, Sammy's one of my best friends, and you were like brothers, and I just he just wants to get back to the kids and and help the community. Tom as you meant at that's that you mentioned how there's sort of a you know, a connection from going from wrestling to you know,
m m A or UFC fighting whatever. What is that connection? Because Roman he's doing that too, right, So what why is that sort of a natural step? Well, I think wrestling is a form of martial art, even though there's no striking. So if they can learn the striking, you know, and themy Thai and the boxing and the jiu jitsu, it's you can depend You can decide whether you want to stand because you can defend the takedown, or you want to go on the ground because you can go
to a takedown. So it's an easy transition. Of course, you got to study some more boxing, You got to study more muy Thai. You got to start a jiu jitsu and a little bit of karate stone in there, and you know some taekwondo moves that you know, it all works together and I just you know, I I would coach six different wrestlers at Arizona State and they all went to the UFC and fought. So that kind of mentality is just it's it's combative and you wrestle, you weigh in once a
week, so it's easy when the MMA is easier than wrestling. Probably wrestling is a tough, tough gig man. It's some of the best athletes out there, so you know, and the question we've asked a couple of guys that we've had on why and the hell do it? You guys are too pretty for this? Yeah, I just yeah, in the eyes of the beholder, Yeah, I mean, it's just it's just one time you just
want to test yourself and see if you can. You know that most when it comes to wrestling MMA, sometimes the hardest opponent is yourself in your mind. Is you can get your mind straight and get through that match, get that through that tournament, get through the season, get through a fight. It's only going to help you in life. Well, hopefully you don't get hit too much. Well you said you did it at fifty one, Yes,
sir, what were you thinking? So what happened was when I left, I was on a state in nine, I fought a couple of times and I said, you know, I told my partner Alf went this a second throw better shows than because I fought in the parking lot when I was forty two million, cussa gando some bar. And then the second fight, I had a July Ford and I thought at a movie theater on a movie theater in nogs so, you know, and and I just then I started
doing my own program. So from oh nine to twenty eighteen, I just did a bunch of shows with Casino del Sol. Paskwayaki Tribe Enterprise gave me an opportunity after I left Arizona State, so I'm very grateful to them, the Heila River Indian community to give me an opportunity. So I'm very grateful to to them. I had shows that Wildhord passed and the twenty eighteen started coming. It was the end of twenty seventeen. I sold my half to my ex wife just because I was it burnt out And I said, Oh,
I'm gonna try this fight, see what happens. Wow, but you don't want to know what happened. You gotta watch the salesman. The salesman, you know. And you you had a good guy maybe about ten years ago who I met Henry said, Hu, theo who's now one or was one of the biggest names in the game. Yeah, I think he's still going to fight. He was a two time UFC champ, like he wanted
two way classes. And Hendry's from Arizona. He's from Maryvelle High School and uh, you know, he's a four sign say champ and in high school and and he won was the youngest Olympic champion for the United States well until Snyder Bedwin in two thousand and eight when he was Olympic champs. So he just kind of transitioned his way into MMA and and it's uh, you know, it's light the ninety five percent mindset and five percent uh strategic. Well,
let me give you another name. And I don't remember his name, but what a heck of a story was the the the wrestler who's friends with you and Sam the he one leg Anthony Roblan. That's it, that's it. What a fantastic story and what an athlete? Yeah, you know you want to ask me award? And they're his movie is going to come out in the fall. It's called Unstoppable and j Low Jennifer Lopez is playing his
mom. Okay, yeah, it's gonna be awesome. And then you know it's uh, I'm so happy for these kids because that's what it's all about, to see them succeed and grow. And yes, King, you know, it's just the family men, the good family men. So we're talking to Tom Ortiz, the Sunnyside wrestler, a s U wrestler, All American uh UFC fighter. Tom, so tell us a little bit about the camp.
You know what what you know what a kid's gonna come and learn what you know, what can they expect from the camp, and then tell us about how you know, how they how they can participate. Well, it's free, so all they got to do is share it with their parents. You know, if they're over eighteen, they just come and sign a waiver and it starts at ten am at Pueblo High School. So it's August third,
August third, and I'll make sure that. I'll send Steve a flyer and then he can post it, you know, on the website having to share it, and that'd be great. So you have it, Yeah, seventy one and I saw That's how I got you on on the air because I said, this will be cool with Kim Wellust is coming in town and you guys doing this for free. What kinds of things will they be learning?
What can they expect? You know, what's the activity wrestling? Okay, so we're going to show them technique, and we got to get together. I'm gonna get together with the three other clinicians. John Moraga is going to be there, Brian stiff Kine, and maybe we'll just show an hour each and it's from ten to two. So I think we're gonna do more technique and more you know, motivating, talking education and trying to inspire these kids to like I like all sports. And now now the fastest growing sport
in the country is women's wrestling. Yes, huge, it's growing, it's growing. They had a thousand in Fargo. They had over a thousand girl, fifteen hundred girls wrestling in most of the Coda Fargo, North Dakota at the women's nationals or girls nationals because they're under eighteen. Yeah, well my guess would have been even women's flag football, because that's becoming huge now. Let me actually women's sports, which my daughter played volleyball, so I understand
the necessity of it. I used sports to get her to get a degree at Benedictine University of Mesa. She was a center and got a degree there. And now she's really successful utilighting her sports mind usually lighting her business mind. And she's a marketing executive for Dutch bros So. And her name is Olivia Rose Artist and my dad used to call her order so nice. Let me ask you something that I'd never asked you this What would have happened to
Tom Ortiz had he not had wrestling? I I we wouldn't be talking right now. Yeah, we would not be talking right now. I just I'm looking at all my movie forward and even when I got out of wrestling, all my connections and opportunities came through wrestling. So and I always look back and how do they get together with the Auckys? A wrestling person set me up right over there. So everything has come from wrestling. I shivered to
think about that. Without wrestling, you know, without those mentors that were there for me, Bobby Douglas of course, down Coast Drive, my dad from Berte Federico, Richard Sante Cincinneti and those people. And I think the most important, what person of them all, is obviously my mother. Yes, she's the most outstanding motivator. That's what I used to call her. So okay, I'm glad she She's going to be eighty seven September ninth,
so I'm excited. Well, well, okay, so tell us one more time we're at and when Saturday the third, Pueblo High School, August third, and what time? And am? But what what time do you want people to show up, you know, to sign up and register and all that kind of I would show up at nine thirty, okay, okay.
But it's going to be an easy going clinic. He welcome back to I'm the Ball here on Fox Sports sporteen fifty. I'm Steve, You're Jay Yojuana. We got a call. Hi, you're on the airline on the ball. I'm good afternoon and gentlemen, Hey, Rick, how was your trip to the All Star Game. I'll tell you what. I really had a great time, and uh, it was
cool to see. I'm not a Dodger fan, I never had, but I got to tell you Otan he just what a beautiful spring that man. It was really it was great to see all the and it was I ron I taped everything and I been seven hours in the airplane to day trying to get home. But uh, it was. It was fun to watch. And I got to watch the rerun and it shows where they were talking to air a judge and next thing, you know, ranking it out. That was funny. Hey, is that a good stadium? Do you like it?
You know, as stadiums go, I guess, I mean, I know it's new, but it seems rather barn like. I don't know, what do you think of the place. Well, you know it's I like their older stadium better. It was much more old fashioned potball. It was a little bit too fufu for my case, but you know, it is what it is. Oh and by the way, Jay, I overheard you talking about you know you hold these grudges. Yeah, Mike, grudges come against the guys that played poker with. So if that's the case, he
has nobody who likes he likes. I can see I can see how poker grudges could be lasting. My name for Rick is the contributor. Come on, Rick, I know you're a better player than that, right, tell them the truth. Hey, Steve, I still think I had little your money in my pocket last week. It's from nineteen sixty four, okay, Rick? Another question about the All Star Game? Were those uniforms as bad in person as they look on TV? Oh? Those uniforms were ugly?
Is that what you asked me? Yeah? Those uniforms, I mean, how awful were they in person? Oh? The American League uniforms looked like you know, brownie out. I don't know who came up with that color scheme, but no, they really did not. They didn't match level of performance and the caliber player. Yeah, how did the contributor get to go to the game? Pardon me? How did you get to go to the
game. Why did you go to the game? Well, I've got family in Dallas and so in all over texts actually, and I was able to a couple of my cousins and another friend of ours, so we all went out and damn ticket parking with more than a damn ticket. It was stupid. How much one? I mean how much was like a hundred bucks? What parking? Yeah? Oh, it ranged from anywhere from two hundred and fifty to five hundred dollars parking. You pay a fee for everything. I
mean it really it was sad. But wow, you know, you know, it's one of those experiences I get to do once in a lifetime, and I'm glad I did it because I really I love baseball. So every year for my birthday, I try to do something special. Yeah this one. I'm done with all Star games now I've been there and so but it is like, I say, what a ballplayer? Yeah, the man just he is really impressive to watching some of these guys, and they played like
they wanted to win too. It wasn't one of these fou fu games. Yeah, okay, all right, great experience, gentlemen. Thank you man, Thank yourect thanks saving your money. I have a great weekend later, thank you. Yeah. Yeah, I've never been to a baseball all circame. No, I maybe I would have a long time ago, not anymore been the World Series? Uh kind of what does that mean? Kind of? I had tickets. I had tickets for game one year at the Bank Bank one, I guess some time, and uh, I got divertically.
It just didn't know what it was. Didn't know what it was. Couldn't get out of bed. Yeah, couldn't get a bad I didn't what I thought I had, like a bad crampers. Yeah. Well I was in the hospital for two three days and that was my first out of it. And we had to get the tickets to some people and we went, yeah that's the game we went. Yeah it was, it was. It was a great time. So when I had ticket, I had eight ticket to Game seven, but couldn't go because I had to work the Red Blue game
that night. Yeah, so so yes and no, Yes, that's a bummer for you. Yeah it was fine though. Yeah, that's fun. The funny thing about it, you say, and this is how is night ago last year? Yeah you think, okay, like the Josh Pastner real thing. Oh they'll be back, there'll be another one, right, Yeah, well I actually I missed in Arizona. There was a whome Arizona football game that day. They played USC at home. That's the game. Remember
we talked to Jason Johnson. He was the quarterback and threw a pick six at the end of the game to move. Yeah, to lose that game. But the best game, the best, the biggest game You've ever been to, biggest game I've ever been to, probably well, well there were those final fours, but okay, outside of the Arizona final fours. Well, because I think this was actually bigger. I went to the NET. I covered the National Championship Notre Dame West Virginia game in the fifty Yeah,
I covered that. That was what was the eighty nine, you know New York State of eighty Was it big? Was it big? It was huge? It was huge National time was the National Championship game, which back when they back when they were still voting, right, this was Notre Dame, Notre Dame West Virginia undefeated, West Virginia what year was this eighty something eighty nine? It was it was after the eighty eight Seeds who coaching No,
no, God, God, I can't think of his name. It was not rich Rod, it was it was before rich Rot and and uh Lou Holtz was that was the not nine two years into I don't remember that they had God who was it they and and and West Virginia came in undefeated and and Notre Dame had one loss, and Notre Dame won the game handily, so probably that you know, covering. Yeah, I mean I went to the ninety seven you know, Final four, so you know that was that
was huge. Haven't been to a Super Bowl, but haven't really desire to go to Super Bowl. I did go to National League playoffs Dodgers nineteen eighty eight when they played the Mets in the playoffs. Didn't go to the World Series, but I went to game is one and two of the of the National League Playoffs at Dodgers Stadium. That was really cool. Uh you know or Hershiser Strawberry, I mean all those guys were were there. Uh well what that really? Those are? Those are the ones, I mean,
you know, the final fours and stuff. Yeah, Yeah, luckily I went to a lot of those, but mine are easy. The Olympic games are up there. But the games when the when the Cups, when the Cups, When the Bulls played the Utah and the Fuel, the Flu game with with Michael Jordan, right, but the game after when Steve Carer hit the game where I covered I was there for the series, and then the Berkeley ninety three years when I covered the Suns and that with the Bulls,
Well, I just I just don't know. The Bears, the Bears forty nine ers NFC Championship Bears. Well you went to the game? Yeah, yeah, twenty seven below zero? Oh no, god, why why did you play that game? Because I could. We were in Chicago, we'd gone it. We gonn was everybody there? Was it fool? It was free, it was jammed, it was cold. Was it minus twenty seven? Oh, there's no way. I didn't even get out of the room minus twenty That that's one of the reasons I went. I said, this
is gonna be minus twenty seven. I'm here, I'm going. I got I got to take it off a scalper for twenty bucks and then you lasted the whole way I went there. I made sure I stayed for the whole game. Did you feel cold? No? Did you say, like, what the hell am I doing? No? No, no, I I it was a it was a thing that it was a it was a badge of honor. I stayed to the very end. I took a picture of
the scoreboard, you know, with the game ending. It was fine for three quarters because the place stayed jammed, but the forty nine ers were kicking their asses, so people started leaving at the end of the at the start of the fourth quarter and it emptied out and then it got really cold. That's when it got really cool. You know, kid one what yours? Uh? Personally or from like a scope like no, no, personally personally. Twenty fourteen, that ASU game for the Pack twelve south yep, Oh
yeah, that was that was big here. Yeah, that was seen in Arizona Stadium as far as proud capacity, rowdiness and then the result you were what twelve Yeah wow. But those are the good times because that's when you form your love for sports at that age, you know. But I think the biggest from like like a lens I went to the Area McDonald National Championship. Oh yeah, you were in San Antonio. Oh you were there for that. Yeah, it was like a last second. It was a once
in a lifetime. You were not they were You were not in school yet. No, it was still the pandemic, right, but you were? You're not? You weren't you of a No? How did you? You decided to go? You and your family or you? We took the trip that the next day after the beat Yukon and then what's the game? Oh? Nice? So you are kind of a fan a little bit. I love you, man, I love you. You's got a bear down shirt on right now. Yeah, look at it. He's got an air on
a backpack. He's a home, he's all those things. It's all the things you seen. Goody two, she's gddy two. She congratulations. By the way, Uh, what we're gonna call? We gotta call real quick. West Virginia coach was Don Neeland. Oh yeah, okay, yeah, Oh hung up? Sorry a call back. We got a couple of minutes left. Sorry about that. We got chatty. Here here you go, Hi, you're on the air and on the ball. How's it going today? What's you want to tell Steve something? Because he was making a comment
about j being grumpy. No, he is no grumpy. I've coached with Jay. He's grumpy. No, but tell me what what what quality or level of grumpy? Oh that was the most extreme grumpy I've ever seen in my life. Come on, I'm a constructive grumpy guy. What was the what was the scenario? Uh, coaching a high school game? After the game, after we blew the game? We had the game won in the last out, A way to lose it, remember, and one of the one of the kids said to Jay, but we tried hard and the Jay
kind of lost it. I lost my mind. Did you get on him? The kid? Yeah? What did you say? It was funny? It was funny. Yeah, you know what you know? I'm thinking, where's he going with this? Then I thought it was at Saint David. So was did we blew? We blew like a we blew like a what like a six run lead or something like that in the last inning and the kid goes, but we tried hard, and I lost my mind. I can't even tell you what I said. I just remember I went a listing.
Luckily, luckily, the parents had no idea about baseball. They didn't say a word. I went right there. They were great. Also, one thing I wanted I wanted to bring up about the ugly ass uniforms in the All Star Games. Yes, you know, and one thing that's kind of bad for the average fan. If they see the guy in the uniform and see his face, they have no idea who he is because they were
thirty two first time. All right. We talked about that, yeah, you know, and if they would have had their uniform with the team, then you'd have an idea who they were. I mean, I knew a lot of them work. I watched a lot of baseball, But the average fan isn't gonna say, I don't when the hell's that guy? Right? Brian? Real quick, let's go back real quick. So you're the head coach or you know, Brian, you're both assistant coaches. No, we
were both assistant coaches, weren't we. That's a n N with the coach. Yeah, okay, So did you make the kid cry? Did he cry? I don't think I was. I was laughing too hard. I don't think he cried, but he was, Yeah, I think he was a freshman. How long ago was this about twelve years? Thirteen years? I guarantee you that kid has had a grudge one fifteen years said that the kid was pretty talented. Yeah, he was really good. Yeah yeah, fifteen years ago. I should find that kid. Do you have a drud
coach Conzo? I hate that man. He probably has a picture of Jay with dark and thanks, Brian, thanks for bringing that one up. I appreciate it. Have a good week there. I remember that the defense arrests. But see, here's the thing about that. Okay, I let it all out. Okay, I did not hold a grudge against that because you forgot about it. Ever, No, I you know, but it's not you. It's when when he when he started talking, I'm like, okay, he's going here. Wait wait, So at what point did he will
you talk talk to them? And there were time and then he responded, right, well, they're in the dugout right and after the loss, and our our our head coach, he's talking to them, you know, saying, you know, just kind of the postgame talk, right and then and he was pissed too, because they blew we blew it. I mean it was errors and you know, all kinds of stupid We blew the game. We we didn't and and and and so he was. He was angry and talking about them, and then then it goes but we tried hard, and
I blew up. What did the coach tell you? What did the head coach tell you? But did he tell me nothing? Nothing? No? I think did you throw something? Probably if you had, I might, I might have kicked the fence, you know, because you know they're in the dugout, we're outside the dugout, and you know it's what There was a fence, you know, chain leak fence in front of it. And there was still more games that we played afterwards, Like, no, I think that was our last game. Oh okay, see that makes sense,
that makes sense. I think I think that was our last game of the year. And had you won, you would have advanced or something. No, it was just the end of the season. Was the end of the season. I lost my mind? I did, I did. I admit it. Thank you for telling us this. All right, it's been a fun week, Steve. About grudges, it's been there. It's been the theme of the week. So we'll we'll try to come up with a better one watching the Okay, I'll give that a try. All right, Hey,
