Breaking down all the exes and olls. It's Steve la Vera and Jagen Salmas. This is I on the Ball on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Hey, welcome back to my in the ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve ven He's jagan' sauce. Now we have one with breaking news. You're on the plot. This is I on the Ball, Breaking news on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Happy Friday to everyone out there. Starting off breaking news
with some Arizona women's basketball news. Thereforeward, a ji Yoakum is out definitely following a knee surgery. Unfortunately. All wishing all the best to her and bust the wishes to It's like this happens every year to the basketball right to that program. Every year somebody, right, they lose somebody in the summer and they're gone for the year. Like dang who doesn't say how long should
be out? Does it? Definitely? Yeah? Yeah, but it's a it's a knee, right, yeah, knee surgery, yeah, if it's if it's meniscus, yeah, but if you blow out an ACL or something like that, it's you know, that's over. It's over for the year. Ah, God, all right into the college football world. It was kind of announced today that the former Pac twelve teams and along with Oregon State and Washington State, are going to be keeping their bull ties with the ones
that they've had in the past for the past couple of years. So you could see a possible repeat for Arizona. Yeah, or we can go to the vegasball Steve Yeah. Yeah, you know, they had to do something like that. I mean, it was kind of like it was weird, like, you know, Okay, the the bowl games are locked up with their conferences, so what happens to the Pac twelve both things, so you know, all the teams that were in the Pac twelve, that's still the
same thing, So the same bowls that the doligible four. I like that, you know, just do this and during this transition period and see what happened with the bowl games. And I still like all the bowl games. I don't remember. Do you not like all the ball games or do you just not care? I just don't care. I watch some of them, not all of them, just you know, I mean I watched some of them, not all of them too, but I like that they're all on or you know, if if there's a game on, I put it on.
Yeah, no, I'm better than watching the soap opera. You don't watch soap opera, well, I know, but in the you know, in the middle of Okay, it's better than watching the dayline. I've already seen. You know, there's if there's if there's a game on on a Tuesday afternoon. You know, so it's a better put it better than a stick in the eye. Yes, okay, exactly. So I like that.
I like that that those those balls are still there for us to go to, you know, maybe Vegas or San Diego or any one of those places, and you do it, and you do know the the Holiday Bowl is in the San Diego State Stadium for the first time. Yeah, that's it seems like a small venue for that, but I guess I don't know.
Well, it's a great place. I mean I remember that that ninety eight Holiday Bowl at Arizona win to against Nebraska, and they was in the big you know, Jack Murphy Stadium or Qualcom whatever we called it at that time, and it was full. That's sixty some thousand people. But people that mean people don't go to Bowl games. Yeah, and well you say ninety eight. They played another one who won twenty fourteen twelve. Yeah, there weren't. It was awful. That was like the worst, the worst
football road trip experience. It was a score no thirty three, nothing done with soon I went. I went on that trip. I wasn't even in San Diego twenty four hours. Yes, those two we covered it for the for the for the website. It was horrible. Yeah, we got it. It was rainy, awful, cold. Yeah. We drove in on the day of the game, went to the game, and left at eight o'clock the next morning. So we weren't even in San Diego twenty four hours
and got got our asses kicked by thirty thirty three. Zip. Yeah, it was not even close. It was awful, and it was in the rain. Yeah. Yeah. Two things I find it interesting about this is that the Alima WOL is still twelve versus the PAC twelve. So you can, oh, you could get a conference matchup. You can get a conference matchup for ah. I didn't even think of that. Yeah. They announced that today. They showed like the graphic the big tall schools packed all schools.
It was versus Kansas State number two or number three. Yeah, or play you know played, they'll they'll try and set it up. So it's two teams that haven't played. I'm sure hopefully, but you know it could happen. Oh interesting, Okay in Oregon State Washington State. They still get right, they're still in that. Good for them. Yeah, that's why Yogi Roth was in Vegas. They did a show. They did, they did, they did a pack called media Day with Posted School. Yeah,
we should get him back one. Yeah, see what he's got going on. Okay, to the NBA, the k next point guard Jalen Brunson accepted a one hundred and fifty six point five million dollar extension contract extension for four years for more years, which is one hundred and thirty million less of what he could have had going into next year. Yeah, there's a lot of word that they that he's trying to help out the team or something. I
don't know. It's nice to see. Yeah, and again, if you're gonna have one hundred and thirteen million versus two hundred and thirteen million, what the hell's the difference. I hope they get some more help the Vilanova Knicks at the point, I hope they guess some more help. I think they're gonna need it. I don't think Michel Bridges is going to be enough for them. Yeah, yeah, now, I you know, I don't care that much, but it's kind of like, you know, the league is
better when your matora. Baseball is better when the Yankees are good. Same with the Knicks, you know. I mean, the Knicks aren't the Yankees, but you know, for those of us who've been around long enough to when the Knicks were good, you know that tradition of having the New York team be good, it's kind of nice. You'd like to see see him get back to that. The city's craving for them to come back to you. You can see it. You saw it in the playoffs this year.
Yeah. Into more NBA news, Johnny's choosing a former UCLA basketball player. He agreed to or four year, twelve million dollar deal with the Jazz went from a two way contract to this type of God. I don't I know the name, and I remember the player, I just don't remember him that much. Yeah, he played, he played with our homie friend, yeahmy hunkas Yeah, yeah, no, I remember that he was that. He wasn't that good, I mean pretty good enough. Well, yeah, you
know again, you know, he got into the G League. Apparently he's you know, made the progress you need to make. That's that's what the G League is for, right, for a guy like that to you know, to improve, get you know, and get himself into the league. So good on him, even though he's the u c l A guy. Uh. Coming up this weekend Sunday at noon, we have the year Old Tournament final, Spain going up against ewind So looking forward to that. Did
you see the video of the Killers? No, they had a concert going on, right, and they stopped the concert to play the last few seconds of of the of the Matt England's you know, semi final match on the on a big screen you know, on the stage, and the place went
nuts. And then they started playing again, and it was kind of cool that they took the time too, you know to show that and and you know, when the when, the when when the you've seen those videos when they start, you know, throwing their beers, That's what it was like in the concert venue and then they started playing again. Look, it was pretty cool. It's pretty pretty cool to see, you know, a rock band. You don't care that much about sports in particular soccer, In particular
soccer soccer. Soccer is a pretty big international they started realizing couple of years in United States is not so much. But overseas, you now there's soccer tournament. The Copa Medica tournament is going to be finishing up. Also on Sunday at five o'clock, Argentina going up against Columbia. There was a big fight in the stands the other day, right, and You'ruguay and the Colombians.
The players went into the stands started fighting. The coach is pretty adamant that the players deserve an apology from the fans than the other way, rather than them getting punished. Yeah, because yeah, I mean the players were saying we were going up there to protect our families and stuff like that. Yeah, crazy stuff, man, Soccer soccer fans are nuts. Last thing I was like to on like a little fun note coming up on Monday that new college football games and be coming out. So yeah, I think I
think this is a pretty big anticipated event. They have people pre streaming it all all weekend. Yeah, former players playing it. They're pretty exciting brand and everything. So I think this is a pretty This is a dumb question, yes, because you know. I mean I grew up, I grew up my you know, my kid grew up. We got them a PlayStation, then an Xbox and all that stuff. This stuff's not on CDs anymore. You just downloaded and download day is on Monday. Then they can start
playing the rest of the week. So what you have to download it into your into your little device as I and it's in there as opposed to you streaming it right? Yeah? Okay? How much does it cost now? I think it's like seventy bucks for the game itself. They have like a bunch of bundles and you can get the Madden game plus the College football game. But if you're just getting the college game at seventy bucks around that or is that compared to what it used to cost on a CD or DVD?
I think a little bit more. I don't think that much more. I would think it would cost less if you don't have to put out packaging and stuff. Gaming was isn't as big, A wasn't as big as it was it is now. Yeah, so are you a big gaming guy? No, this is the only game I've only played. Oh really, yeah, you've still been playing just College actually during the Pandemic. They only have it on the Xbox sixty, which has like been discontinued. I bought it again
in the Pandemic because I got so bored. Yeah, and I've been playing it since, just waiting for this game to come out. Wow. Wow, Yeah, there's a bunch of memes going around together. The forty old man more anticipated for this game than their one, Waiting days and stuff like that. Uh. I only played it a little bit, you know, with my kid, and he was he's just kicking my ass. So I just said, I'm not playing this anymore. I can't move the buttons fast
enough, I can't do anything. And I would just I would blitz off every play and I would throw deep every play. Yeah that was me that way. Did you ever play with your with your with your boys? No, they played their soccer stuff and no. No, I had the Wei thing, the Wei oh yeah sports. I played that, you know, the table tennis and the tennis and stuff. Yeah, that's what I was coming to. We had we had a wee from yeah, and then the then the weight you could kill, and then I don't know, it got
old after a while. I guess I don't like everything else interesting I was, I was a a plus polar on WE Sports. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, those are cool. That's that's twenty years ago. Man, that's a long time go right Yeah, time flies, Yeah, all right? Cool? What else? Hey, I got a big guy, big game Boomer, who's who's ran away from us against the last few months because we
want him on the show. He has Tyler Loop as the twelfth best kicker in college football, twelfth best kicker, twelfth and he's isn't the conference player conference kicker. I think he's the conference season Conference first team. Yeah. And obviously the dude is very consistent. Yeah. I don't think he's a huge leg not yes, but he's very consistent. He doesn't have the leg that the last guy had, but he's he's you know, he'll he'll make
more and may I don't know, we'll see. I mean, if you can get look, if you can give a fifty yard and that's all you need to be able to kick, if you you know, I we don't expect you to be kicking fifty seven, fifty eight yards or whatever. But if you can make and if you're making the forty five yarder every time, that that's all. That's what you need right right, you know, you get you get to the thirty yard line, you want to know that you're
in a good position to score. And so that'll be really that'll be really important. Steve. I'm just getting so fired up for football, and I you know, I'm trying to real hard. I'm trying real hard to not get over my skis on this thing, you know, and and get into my mind, God, what if they if they're go un defeated? You know, I think there's a no drinking policy in this building. What you've
been drinking? You want to check my check, my shake. But you know, when you're a fan like you know, when you're a fan like this, you let your mind wander on stuff like that, especially this time of the year, right because you're just waiting for the games just to start. You hear people talking about everything. Arizona's in the conversation for so many things now, and then you go, God, what if, what if? What if? And I do that and then also go, you know,
what what if they lose to New Mexico? Right? I mean I was there for that NAU loss and it was shocking. Just let it happen. You're a freshman and how'd you feel walking up that building? I was stunned. Were you mad? I was mad? The next day happen in that moment. I was just shocked that that final score had and then with more points. Yeah, yeah, I was mad. I left that. I left the I left the I've told you. I left the stadium angry, but not angry at the team and not angry at Jaed Fish, angry
at Kevin someone. Yeah, I was angry at he was the one that I wanted to beat up that night. And I could have. I could have taken I could have taken it. And you're thinking, what the heck just happened? Yeah, super angry about that. I knew we were going to struggle that game. I just had a feeling you just got to. Like the third quarter, I said, oh wow, might lose. Yeah, it was in the second half. I thought that they could actually lose this game, and then they did. Why don't you bring that up?
You did? Who brought it up? You did? You were talking about? Well, guess maybe you did. Somebody that I didn't know, didn't know what someone talked about. I said that you opened the door. I did. I guess Hey, and this late breaking news Baldwin has been the suit has been dismissed and said Alec Baldwin. Yeah, the shootings from the rest it's without prejudice, so it could come back. Yeah, but unbelievable.

Today streaming live on the iHeartRadio app. This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jay Gonzalez on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Hey, welcome back to My the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. He's Chickensauce got fun with us today. We had sixteen minutes hoping to hear from Brian Howell out of Boulder. Our phone, that's Steve
Weep. I know, we'll see if he calls it. Yeah, we'll see. We've texted him and see if he can he can get with us here. He's am I meant, I remember we're talking when he first doing it, when Dean first got over there with all that stuff, and he was just like, I don't know, you know, I was just not gonna be my first question. I mean, did he going in? You don't know what to expect, right your whatever, Your anticipation level didn't meet
the anticipation level. Was it easier or more much? Ado about nothing? Because you know he I don't know what what did you how to referm to? Was it prime? Was it coach? Was it? Yeah? Dion? I mean, you know, touch the ring, kissed the ring? Ah? God, look and Dion's Dion's going to be Dan. He's a character. He's a he's a personality, you know, but as we say somewhere in there, he's got to be he's got to be a coach too, and uh, you know he's got certainly some different ways of doing things.
Yeah, right, you know he brought up in his press conference that he said, yeah, you guys talk about how you know, we're nothing but the transfer portals that we we signed seventeen high school players. Well, okay, he signed seventeen, but you're allowed to sign twenty five and you
didn't, so you know, you're still portal heavy. But uh, you know, he's you know, he from the NFL, where you can you can fix your holes quickly, and then he's approaching it like that, right, and there's nothing you know, I guess there's nothing wrong with that, you know. Okay, we're hoping he calls in. I was looking forward to this because last week he said he had no time until now, and
then he found time. Yeah, so we'll see what happens. Then he was in he was in Vegas for for the Big twelve, and he hasn't been coming Colorado that long. I don't think maybe, yes, I can't remember. We've talked to him a number of times. Yeah, and just see how it is now, uh anything else? What else? It was well to go back to issue. It was a good conversation with the you're
gonna put it on? Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and I'll pust that one up on social media, so you guys, so our listeners are you know, can grab it and you don't have to go looking for it. But uh, he you know, I got grammars and he was really good. He's sounds like he says, sounds like a really smart guy. But
you most ads are sure of course he was more more official sounding. Yeah, and maybe he did it for us because you know, he's you know, he's there and we're here and like and like Michelle said, you know,
we know how you guys because we are who we are. But I think he's, uh, you know, when you just talk to him, you feel like he's got his head in the right place, you know, as he's as he said, you know, he this is what he signed up for, right, this is what you know, what he's come into the environment and the atmosphere that they that that that they're they're dealing with, and so uh, you know, he's he's just gotta you know, they gotta make I just Steve, I just don't see how you know, whoever
it is, right, whatever he do, Mark Hart, Mark Harlan at Utah, Desiree Read Francois Arizona, you know, Grammars Senior to Asu. How they get their arms around all of this and how there's so much that has such a huge impact on what they're doing and how they're going to manage all this stuff and at the same time try to put try to put uh uh, you know, winning programs on the field. You know, I'm mean, that's what's nuts, and that's what that's what just you just go,
man, how are they going to do this? Okay, we're trying to figure out number. You text him. I'm want to retext him and see if he can find us, you can talk. Is he trying? Is he trying to reach us? Okay? Yeah, because I did text him at the number that I have for him, So I hope it's that. I hope that's the right number. But you know, again, you know, getting back to that, it's just that these coaches and these and
these ads that it's it's just it's it's just a whole different animal. Anymore, and you know, winning continues to be vital, But how do you how do you deal with all the other stuff and maintain a program? You know, how how are they going to do that when the time comes to pay these athletes? Right? Yeah? You know, I mean I don't. I don't know how, especially when you're already in a deficit. Well, you have to find money to fill holes. And now you and you
need more money. You need more money? Right right here we go? Possibly, Hey, Brian is this you? Yeah, I'm sorry, no problem. How are you? We missed talking to you? Yeah, I'm sorry. I totally forgot and I was I was visiting my mother kind of impromptu and forgot. No probably, well, no problem. I tried to value and our phone it wasn't your It was on your side. Our phone are the number which wouldn't go through, which is weird. That was just
on our side. So one of the key questions, Brian, well that straight At this time we were on the phone with you, and you know kind of Dion was in this first kind of year and wondering how are you going to deal with this? How you have to deal with it? Were the expectations of uh not met? What were you thinking going in and did they realize themselves or were they easier than you thought? Yeah, I think
I don't know the expectations were met. I think that, you know, they thought they were going to be better than they were they I mean, the Standards family has never experienced losing like that, so they certainly expected better. But I think they learned a lot from it. No, no, no, let me's terrifying. And how you cover the team and how he was going to be with you guys, your job. Oh yeah, I
think it was kind of like I expected. I mean, we knew we weren't going to get a ton of great access to players, and we knew that he wouldn't talk, you know, as nearly as much as previous coaches. But he was pretty good with us overall. Actually, I would hear people say say that, man, when they start losing, he might be
impossible, but he was great after a lost. Well. Well again, I think maybe it just goes back to the fact that you know, he's done his thing right, he knows that he's good at whatever he does,
and so he just doesn't worry about so much about what people think. Accept you know, I saw on the podium the other day that you know, he talked about the fact that, oh, the media says, you know we're transfer portal, have you that, Well, we only get guys out of the transfer portal and they tried to point out how many high school guys
they signed. So, you know, he thinks about things, but he keeps receipts, as he says, how does he balance that with kind of being also a guy that says, I don't care what you think about me, because I am who I am. Yeah, well, I sort of laugh at that sometimes, the chuckle at him because he'll say things like, yeah, I don't care what you're thinking of me, but then he points out time and time again he does care exactly what people say, and so
like, dude, don't mix when you say I don't care, but then you also say I keep receipting, right. I mean, it's kind of interesting, but you kind of take him for who he is, and you know, I like him overall, but just kind of takes some of those maybe chuckle out of him here every now and then. And having been a big guy, both of us been a big guy. I think he's called you all specifically a couple of times yes, Oh yeah, you know, you never know. You go into every press conference thinking, Okay, this
is the time I'm gonna get called out here. And it doesn't even have to be a wild question. It could be the most what you think is the most mundane question. But he found something in there that he either has something he wants to go off the chest and you're the target, and you're the target that time, he'll just twist it somehow, So you never know. Okay, So let me ask you this, because we were talking about
the media poll. They've got Colorado eleven. Then you know, we were constantly seeing ratings where Shador Sanders is the best quarterback in the Big twelve, Travis Hunter the best cornerback or best receiver in the Big club. How do you square having talent like that and then say, having a team that they that team has picked to finish eleventh in the league. How do we how
are we supposed to process that? Yeah, that's a good question because I look to the media poll results and they you know, they've got Travis Hunters Defensive Player of the Year and Chador is the first team quarterback, but the Bust are eleventh. And I'm thinking if they've got the best defensive player. That means they're defense is good. And if they got the best quarterback, you know, first team conference, all All conference quarterback. I mean their
offense is pretty good. They're not going to be able to have it place. So to me, more of what it says is that the media used Colorado as having two stars and not a whole lot else. Interesting. How do you view them? What do you? Yeah, what do they say with you? I think they're better than that. I mean I picked them sixth and I could see them being better than that. I could see them
being worse than that. I mean I thought they were They should have been a BOLL team last year, even with a bad offensive line and bad defense. You know, they never should have lost the Stanford game, which would have been win number five. And then I think they absolutely get another one if they beat Stanford and you know, they had Arizona on the ropes right and let them off, and you know, so I think they were good
enough to be a BOLL team last year. I think they're better. I think the offensive line is better, I think the defense is better, and they got more weapons. I think they're potentially eight to nine wins. Wow. So what what was the difference in the second half of the season.
I don't think they ever recovered mentally from that loss of Stanford. I think, yeah, you know, I mean that was right before it by a week and so, uh, you know, you lose that game and then you have to sew on it, you know, for two weeks be where you can play again. I don't think they ever fully recovered from that. And then and then of course they lose Sha Door with a game and a half left, and you know, there was no shot left. A happened, all right, So your thoughts on sort of the vibe at the PAC
twelve media. Oh, I did it. We've got a jar going over here every time we mistake PAC twelve Big twelve for PAC twelve and so I'm up to three bucks now, all right? So, Brian, the vibe at the at the media days in terms of, you know, what's the media saying about all this? What you know, the guys that you talked to, the people that you talked to about this transition, and and you know the new teams. Colorado is really not new to the Big twelve,
but still they are. I don't know, just what's what does it sound like over there. I don't know any other way to ask that from the Colorado's perspective, just from your your perspective as a member of the Median. What you see, what you're hearing about, what people are saying about the new league and the teams that are coming over, and what's this thing going
to be like? Well, in general, I think that there's a lot of excitement about it, and you know, I think that teams are are generally excited about, you know, facing new competition and just having this newness of the league. I think the four corner schools, my impression is, I know from Colorado that they like the stability that they have that they didn't have literally one year ago. Today they like having that. So, you
know, I think there's general excitement. Let me ask you, after covering in for one year, is that enough sample sized for us to know if he's a good coach or maybe any insight for you if he's a good coach. Not yet. I want to see this year. He made some mistakes last year and he's admitted that that, you know, the game day operations sometimes weren't as clean, and maybe there's some decisions he would make differently.
I think he knows the game clearly, but I think that if he wanted to improve in one area, I would think it probably the game day some of the decisions, and I think you do there. But you know, I think like most coaches, I mean, there's coaches that are ten fifteen years in that are still evolving. And he's really only been a college head coach for four years, so it makes sense he'd still be evolving. How good is George Sanders? Is he a first round NFL quarterback? Yeah?
For sure. You know, I would be stunned if he was not one of the top five picks in the draft. And he's really really good. I think he's because of his athletic ability. What makes him so. I
think he's really smart. I think he puts the ball where it needs to be, and he's got He's not a runner, but he can run and he used this feat a lot of times, not always to get out of bad spots, and and he'll find the receiver downfield where you know, even when you watch those camera views that are from behind and you're like, man, where is he throwing? Oh okay, I see we're showing it. There's a touchdown. Yeah, you know, he sees things that you know,
most quarterbacks don't see and it's impressive to watch. What what does he need the most this year? You mentioned the offensive line was really was really bad last year in terms of you know, does he have a line this year? What about the receivers? You know, does he have the support that he's going to need that if he's a first round quarterback, that he's going to look like a first round quarterback this year? I think So we're going to find out. I mean, they've upgraded the offensive line. We'll
see how much, but I think they're much better. He's loaded a receiver. We think they got talent and running back as well. But it's a lot of unproven guys. But I think they're better and I think that he's got more talent around than last year. So we saw what happened in the first half of the season. They did well. They won over a lot of people. They were like the darlings of the national media. How has the How have the locals embraced him? I'm sure they loved him the first
half. How did they love him in the second half. The general family still loves him. I mean, they're excited about him. They're yeah, they're glad he's still here. They can't wait to see what he does this year. And they're obviously super glad to have Travis and Chador for another year. And so I think they're excited about it. And you know, unlike anything, when you go four and eight, maybe a little bit of the shine is off, but you know, I think for the most part,
people are excited about it. Yeah, we're talking to Brian how Boulder Daily Cameras, So Brian, the league overall, you know, the the narrative is that it's a very even league. You know, you mentioned that you think you know Colorado can, you know, can be up there. You know, there's really probably a few Can maybe Asu and I don't know who else. Do you kind of think, okay, you got no shot, but it you know, so that's sort of the narrative right now. Do
you kind of agree with that or where are you on that? Yeah? I really do. I mean I look at you know, five or six teams initially, and those are the ones that are you know, in the top five in the media poll that I say, yeah, they've got a legitimate shot. And then you start looking at some others and like at UCF, I'm like, dang, they are really good. Yeah, I think they're picked like Tan or Knights, and you know, I could see them
winning the conference. And then you look at Texas Tech and you're like, man, they're really good too. You know, I think they could be a sleeper. And you know, and then you look at a TCUs only two years removed from being in the playoff, and they may not be at that level yet, but you know, they've got a lot of guys that were still part of that team a couple of years ago. You know, I think Colorado honestly can be a team that is a sleeper that may be
surprises people. And so I do think that they're maybe nine to ten deep as far as teams that could make a claim for the conference title. If you put to Colorado sixth, where did you put Arizona? Ah, well, I can't, I can't remember. On the top of my head. They were about I had him above Colorado, the main reason being that that game is in Tucston. I think that if they were playing in Boulder, I might have flipped that. But I think that's a pivotal game for where
those who land. But yeah, I can't remember exactly where I had Arizona, but I've got them top five. Yeah, okay, Brian, Well, thanks a bunch. As always, we'll talk to you again soon, you bet. Thanks guys. All right, hell covers Colorado for who the Daily Bolder, Daily Camera, Boulder actually the Boulder Paper in Yeah. Yeah. I love to see those press conferences because he's always being pointed out. They do, man, they picked, he goes, he goes. I
don't know. Maybe it's a good relationship to Tom. Yeah, exactly, exactly. All right, let's take our last break. We're going to come back, last break of the weekend. Hey, welcome back, joining the ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve, He's Jay, and now we have one for the last fifteen minutes on Friday. And if you'd like to call us,
please do five two zero four one six seven four to four zero. Good week of shows. Yeah, you know, it's been good stuff, interesting stuff with Brian Hall from the Boulder Daily Camera, and you know, overall,
I think it's just this is gonna be really interesting. There's gonna be stuff to talk about all season it is and I tend, well, I don't know if you tend to agree with him, but I want to tend to agree with him that for your point, they have some pretty good athletes, at least some of the two or three considered to be that they should finish higher than eleventh. They should with those kinds of guy. And I
think, like I say, I don't know who voted from Tucson. We've asked a few people and they did didn't uh, so who did in other places? Uh? And I don't think that they would know enough about Colorado, Utah, Arizona and uh and you to Colorado and who else is those four? There's four Utah, Colorado. There was an issue, Uh, you know, to know enough about how good they're gonna be, right,
But Steve it put yourself in the just. I know you don't know a lot about them, but if you know that you've got this quarterback, this and this and this wide receiver, wide receiver, you're gonna say, sure, you're not gonna you're not gonna vote him eleven. Right. I don't know if i'd vote him as high as sixth like Brian did, but I
probably would have put him seventh or eighth. That's so you have one bias people who vote who don't know enough, and the guys like people in Tucson who vote for Arizona being higher than they should, right, and and Brian who's probably has an internal bias to the team they cover. Yeah, but like, like you know, Arizona coming in fifth. My first thought was, well, that's not high enough. But then I thought, when you who's ahead of them, and you go, Okay, I guess that makes
kind of sense. Yeah, I bet I would have voted in Arizona third. You know, if I if I had a vote, I probably would have put him third, third, because I think, oh, I think you got to put Utah up there, And then I just think, I'm not even sure what team I put second. I just don't think it's there. I just don't think it's Arizona, is kind of what I'm saying. But then I see, you know, I would have looked at Shador Sanders and I thought, how dang, they've got to be more middle of the
pack than that. How disturbing would this be if if three teams from the Pac twelve ended up one, two three in the Big twelve in the first year. I don't think there would be three, but there could be two. Yeah, he could be two. Yeah, I don't think. I don't think. I mean, I think Colorado will finish, you know, six seventh. Yeah, I see, I don't. I still don't know how good of a coach he is, exactly Obviously he's It's like the jet thing and shed fished to me he didn't coach a whole lot of games.
We don't. No, he cut lightning in a bottle. Yeah, accidentally, accidentally accidentally, you are correct, and and and we know that that he can motivate the kids, the dion and he can ye Kenny coach them. Canny coach, I mean the just the physical task of coaching and having a system that you can win with Jay. If there's anything I've learned,
there's two things I've learned. For sure. You can't you don't know what an eighteen, nineteen twenty year old just thinking you don't know how they're going to be that day. Emotions play a huge part. And two, coaching matters. Coaching matters. You can have talent or no talent. Look at Colorado and basketball. Just that stuss your right, how many guys to first round draft picks and a two two lottery picks and three guys who get in the league. How well three guys and how good were they? Yeah?
And that's no, no father the coach or it is. But my point is how did you miss win? Exactly? And what I learned was like like Luke lut wasn't all about the five Stars, he was the guys that fit the parts right, fit the parts and got him to play hard right. And unfortunately Sean Miller in a lot of ways was all about it. And he never I shouldn't say never. He had a couple of really really great teams. The team that that you know, what's his name broke his
foot? That was a really good team. He got some but then you know, I just think of the of the of the the year with Josh Green and and and nic Nico Mannion and and you had those three guys and you were just kind of the middle of the road team, right. He got caught up in exactly that the five stars got to get the talent got and and then ego enough that I can make him work together. That really happened. Instead of getting guys that he could make work together. Guys who
understood his system and were really willing to run his self. And let me say this, and this is not gonna be a knock on Sean. I'll say that beginning, Uh the guy they had the boy guard position, Wellconnell may have had tons of tons of uh reason why you had the success, right because because you had a guy like that, had a guy with not a five star guy, but with a guy that brought everybody to get the work and have that team together for the two years. The Steve Kurkr factor.
You play hard because this guy wants you to play hard and you respect the hell out of them, right, No, one hundred percent, Steven, And so you know it's it's it's I don't know. I think I
think. I think that's gonna be one of the interesting things to keep an eye on this year, and people will because of what happened last year with Colorado is where Colorado finishes in the league, because people do want to find out how good of a coach is Deon sand If they finished tenth or eleventh again this year, people are going to start to question whether he can do this well tenth thor eleven this year and his kid's gone after this year and
then him or you're gonna go to the NFL. Are you gonna go somewhere else? Well, who's gonna want you? If you're going tenth three level league if you can't win. I mean, if you're if you're eight and sixteen after two seasons of being the head coach at Colorado and you had two first round draft picks on your team, then how good at coach are you?
You know? And his his market was severely dropping. You know, in the end, he's still got to win at Colorado relatively soon, to prove that he can prove that he can coach and to keep his job because you know, I mean, can you match if the day comes if they got to fire him, well, how hard is that going to be? So that's why I asked Brian. I'm sure the love for him was very high in the first few games because he was it was the national story until
he wasn't. Until he wasn't and they disappeared in the second half of the season, people stopped talking about him, and I get it. You know, they win to coach. Okay, so let's say they win those two games that Brian mentioned that the Stanfford game and ys, Okay, so they're six and six, and yeah, that was great for where they were, but still six and six is still six and six, you know, so
you know you'd still be looking at this year. Hey, you've got two first round draft picks and you were six and six with these guys last year.
How much better are you going to be? Well? I think in Colorado they would have been thinking, like Arizona fans, door Jeded comes in, they go one in eleven whatever it was, and then you see the progression and you're very happy with it because you see the progression, right, and then all of a sudden you catch lighting in the bottle, yeah, accidentally or whatever, and then you say okay, and then maybe in a year, in a year it had Jed stayed, you're thinking, okay,
it's likely that if he has another year, they're going to come chasing him. Yeah, honestly, yeah, yeah, if you would have, if you would have stuck around for this year and met the expectations, then three yeah, and and nobody would have questioned exactly because you kind of okay, we get it, yeah you're gone. Yeah, but how the circums happened fast? Yeah, as you said, lightning the bottle. It happened fast. They were ten and three, very quick, and then it was like
that was good enough to get him the next job. It was a year earlier than we thought. But okay, fine, take him. He's gone. We'll see how you know again that that's another thing. You know, I'll kind of you know, watch you know, how good is Washington gonna be this year? They were in the they were in the championship game last year, and now people are saying, you know, six, what's it?
They're over under six I think or five. I think it's six, you know, And and Arizona's Arizona's like a minus two forty five to win more games than Washington this year. So I don't know, but that's that's, you know, the point of what I was saying at the very beginning of this conversation is that there's gonna be a lot of cool stuff to keep to keep us interested, to keep it, to keep our eye on not
only just within the Big twelve, but all over the country. I mean talking about some of these games that are going to get played this year because of the conference matchups. You know, Texas and Michigan play, you know, uh, Georgia, And I think Georgia and Texas play the fact that Texas got to play those two teams, right, and and Texas Michigan is
is a is A is a non conference game. But know these matchups that you have, you know within the league, within their leagues, that some of these these teams that got to play each other, that have avoided each other for all this time. Right, Oklahoma's got to play Alabama. Uh and they did last year, but I play him again this year, you know, in a conference game. So all of those things are gonna add so much more to the college football season. There's gonna be a great game
like that every week. Every week. There's gonna be a game that you go, whoa, we didn't you know, we didn't have this before. Yeah. I forgot to ask Jake because I saw him post something that he got his tickets, because he typically doesn't get season tickets, and it looks like he might be coming down not so much interesting he has. Yeah, And and like you said, with Desiree, we hope to get her next week. Yeah about about we gotta get we got to get their their media
guys back in the building. Everybody scattered all over the place just to see about the ticket situation. She said, forty forty percent increase of new season ticket holders. Yeah, so I'm assuming when you go to the games. Yeah, yeah, I'll be I'll be out of every game this year. I haven't. I haven't only missed two home games over like the last decade. Okay, because you're here, Yeah, can I ask you something? This is the person maybe not a personal question. Is there a lot of
in stadium drinking? Are they're bringing our students bringing booze into the stadium like we used to? We'll change your name to protect. Then there's a reason. There's a reason you call me mister goody two shoes. I'll just say that I look out for people when I go to games, Okay, for in the good way and in the bad way. I I protect the people I'm with and I try I try to look out for everyone else I can, but from there, with people, I'm gonna prioritize them. That's how
okay? Is it? I mean? Is it? Look? I mean the story of when we were coming in, you know, in college and stuff like that are incredible, But you know it, I shouldn't say never. It rarely got like out of hand, even though there was so much booze in the in the sections. How is the zoo pretty orderly or not? Yeah, I would say so. It's more of a like a health
thing, the routing routiness thing. You know. There's been a couple of games where I've been at where someone will fall out fall down fall two rows in front of us, right, and you start to worry about them, right, but no one's getting physical, like everyone just wants Arizona to win, right or whenever. Crazy. It's good to hear, you know, not like ten years ago, twelve years ago when they were streaking on the field when they're so that was actually my first game ever. Do you see
any sport I had never been to any sport game. You had to be ten. Yeah, Dad, does this happened all the time. It hooked me for something out there, naked, got to the right, taken the left, got covered, had two teams going at this but across the fight. Yeah, oh my gosh, I just you know, you know, my experience was there was a lot of booze. You know, you know when first of all we were this is before they were selling booze, right,
Oh no, this was sneaking booze into the stadium. I'm talking, you know, because drinking age was nineteen so most college students could could buy booze and bring it in. I mean, there are stories of kegs being snuck into the you know, into the stadium. Really Yeah, I saw, I saw Okay, I saw this. I saw this because you know, there's dorms. I know their offices now, but there were dorms. Is still underneath the stadium. Yeah, I saw these guys rig or rope.
Okay, So from this was before the upper deck was built. Okay, on the on the east side, all right, So I'm I'm walking up to the stadium and you see two guys and they drop two ropes down. Okay, and you see two guys that going. They pulled the ropes in, and they rigged the rope and they pushed a pony keg out out the window, and these two guys pulled it up into the stadium. The nerds stuff. There's a there's a legend, whether it's urban legend or not,
somebody talks about somebody bringing a keg in in a baby stroller. Okay, how and then they didn't and they didn't search you so you could bring you could bring well, you could bring ice chests, okay, and they wouldn't look in your ice chest, so you could bring in a case of beer. And and and people did. I mean, I you know, my my deal was to take in a pint of Bocardi. You know, I take a pint of Bocardy and I just buy cox during the game,
mister Gonzalez, why do you have that fishing boot? Then? And then they started searching you, and so you just hit it, you know, you like you said, you put it in your boot. You put in you know, the back of your pants or whatever. There are things called pocket shots, you know. Pocket shots are they're like ketchup packets of booze, but you know they're bigger. Yeah, but they're like ketching. You could buy them at a liquor store and you just put those in your pocket.
But I probably did never heard those before, and I'd put those in an egy, get a get a strawberry, and uh and a pocket shot around. If anything, our listeners have learned a lot about a little love about you. Good luck listeners, good show this week, good shows. Yeah, it's been fun, Thank you, been a lot of fun. Big talk Meetia days. Was fun. Good to see you. One. We're not chef. I'm not sure we'll let your feet are on the ground. One the sky diving thing. The skydiving thing, it was you made
it, so I'll still tell you, mister goody two shoes exactly. There's truly all right man. Okay, guys, uh fun week Steve, Yeah, another one. Have a great weekend. I'm golfing tomorrow at eleven thirty in in the morning, so it should be nice and warm. I'll see you Monday. Maybe all right, we'll see you on Monday. Thanks for being here.
