Steve Rabera and Jacob Saliz, they have their eye on the ball on Tucson Sports Stage. Chef Fox Sports fourteen fifty, Hey, welcome back to winning the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve, He's Jay. Now we have said with breaking news on the ball, breaking news. All right, We're gonna start off our breaking news with the big college football stuff that's going on. We got Chip Kelly moving to Ohio State as a defensive
coordinator. That whole situation just been super messy, super messy. This bizarre to me. Well, you know, I mean, he's made all the money he's ever needed to make, right, So it's not like he needs to stay at UCLA for the money. Sure, right, If he doesn't want to do all the stuff that comes with being the head coach at a place like UCLA, then why the hell not go over to Ohio State?
Is the offensive coordinator? Sure, now you're calling. You're working in an offense that year in year out has all the best some the best players in college football. You know? Did did? Did? Did? Ryan Daymaker tell Jeff you look, come over here. You won't have to recruit, you won't have to do n I l you know, just come over here and coach the offense. If he's something like, why wouldn't you do that? Right, except for the fact that you're not left. You've left U
c l A hanging. Well, you know what that said? This if we haven't learned this in the last few months, that coaching and college football and anything is it's business. It's his business. And guys at that level or even our level, you know, you go because it's what's best for
your family and what best for your mental health or whatever. And look at that he he left, right, If he left, and you're thinking for the lower position, right, well, maybe it's peace of mind and whatever like you say, and you just think, you know what my decision is mine, don't explain it to me. I don't need to explain it to you. Right, what's right? Yeah? And what? And really I mean getting past the fact that that that you know, UCLA's in a bad
spot. Now, sure, getting beyond that. In the end, you know, you got to watch out for number one because you don't. Right, If you don't, you can drive yourself, sure. Sure. And if he just doesn't want to do that anymore and he doesn't need the money, to do that anymore, and his family doesn't want to live in la
anymore, then, why the hell would you not take this job? Sure, it's just it's funny how timing was, Because don't you think the fish would have done after this job rather than the Washington job or the Michigan job. Yeah, he'd have gone after both of those. In a heartbeat. He's going, what the hell timing, He's going, Okay, seven and a half million dollars, all right, all right, but no, it's very very apparent. It's all a business. Yeah, if you don't like
where you're at, look at the kids. I mean, do you know who the smart guy was? Will Height? Yeah, he saw he I'm not gonna go there. The guy might just leave. The guy might leave. He probably, that's probably what he heard. He said, he's not sticking around. I think he's even even if he stays around this year,
he's probably not gonna be there after that. He did say that there was a quote somewhere in the in the paper, in the internet somewhere, paper or whatever, saying that, yeah, there was a consideration when he started hearing that he was going to talking to the offensive coordinators jobs. He said he might not be around. Yeah, smart, Well, and he went
to Nebraska, where there's another there's a controversy around around Nebraska. So you know, if you haven't heard it or seen it, the the top raighted quarterback in the country, Dylan Rayola, who had committed to Georgia, flipped and went to Nebraska. And I think he'd originally committed to Ohio State, right, but go ahead, right, But his dad is a he's a
he's a legacy in Nebraska, a few some family members. So anyways, he ends up going to Nebraska. Well, the dad, Dominic Rayola, comes out in public and says that Kirk kurb Street we all know Kirk from from from Game Day, is the one who told Ryola to go to Nebraska. Her story, and so now they made a big old thing because you know, he's ESPN. What's you know, what's the what's this guy doing
advising athletes on on where to go? And why did he why did he advise him to leave from Georgia, which is an ESPN school right in terms of a TV contract, to go to Nebraska, which is a Fox Sports school in the Big Ten. What the hell's he doing? And her Stree has gone said. I didn't say that. All I said was that I think Matt Rul's are really good. That's all. That's what he said.
You got to takehim for rewards. The one thing that I thought when I was reading this this morning, I was thinking, here we are we have I don't know if he's a journalist, would you consider him a journalist? Say well, when when it came up and people were saying you can't do that, I have mixed. I don't think. I don't consider him journalist, analyst. He's an analyst, like Tony Romo is an analyst. Okay,
okay, and that's different. But it was like me thinking, thinking, okay, if he's a journalist or he journalists, you have guys endorsing products. You see him now all the time endorsing products. That I'm thinking, is that? Is that what we've come to? Where? You know, I think I do it. I do it, but I'm not really a journalist anymore. I'm on a radio endorsing my rock guy. You know what I'm saying, Well, they have this influence on on things when they
should be right here, you know, tunnel vision? Does that make sense? But but I'm not so sure that I would disagree with what he did.
I'm not hurt. If he wasn't doing anything, I know, but no, But if he was, if he was a newspaper report, okay, okay, okay, And and you have a newspaper report telling Dylan Royala, you know you should really go to Nebraska, I'd have a problem with that, Okay, okay, especially if I was covering a brass sure, right, well, and you know that happens, right, And of course it happens well. And it made me think of And I told this story before as an example, but it's a little different, but it's similar.
I've told the story about when I was I was doing a story on Sean Elliott and I it was sort of the It was at the end of the eighty eight season, going into the going into the I think, going into the NCAA and and we went out to get pizza. Okay. So driving in the car on the way to get pizza, he just strikes up a company, he said, he said, you know, he says, I don't know what to do about whether I should go to the NBA or now. He brought it up. I didn't bring it up. I didn't ask
him Sean, are you thinking about going to the NBA? He brought it up, he said, or he said something like, what do you think the fans would say if I left after this year and went to the NBA. And I was almost like he was at, you know, trying to pick my brain as to what I thought of what I thought he should do. And all I said to him was you shouldn't give a crap about the fans. And my advice to him was do what's right for you. So
I didn't tell him to do this or do that. I just said, you have to think about yourself, which I just said about Chip Kelly, right, And I still believe that. He said, you have to do what's right for you. Now that might involve your mom, and your mom may have you know something that, but the last thing you should be thinking about is what the fans are going to do. Sure, And that was my advice to him. He ended up staying in large part, they say,
because his mom said, you're not leaving school, you know. And he went off and he was what he was the fourth pick, fifth pick, seventh picks something like that in the draft, and he got his money and he got in the NBA and had a great career, but he stayed, he didn't get his degree, he didn't finish in four years. He ultimately did. But you know, I didn't have a problem with giving that advice because I didn't tell him to do one thing or another. I just
said to him, think about it. Yeah, But that's close as I could think to sure. And maybe if Kirk Kurbstreet had done something like that, it said do what's right for you, nobody would say the thing, Well, the thing is that dad, the dad, maybe a mischaracter correct correct, because it was all about the dad talking about that. Well, someone said this too, And I don't want to get it too much in bull because I don't know exactly when they said the former Washington coach when he
went to ALABAMAAMA kind of ampered with a couple of Arizona players. I don't know what to what extent or whatever, or I think it was clarified by mister Flafida that that didn't really happen. I can't remember. Do you remember the story? Now? I remember a story, but I don't. It all turned out okay here blah blah blah. But it happens. It happens more than we know yeah, no, it does it, of course it does. You know there were guys calling, you know, all kinds of
guys calling Arizona. Well and you know with you know, uh uh uh so our guy that we uh uh our booster guy, Burt Lopez. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm sorry Bert, if you're listening, I'm sorry. I forgot your name. It happens to the best. We forget everybody. But you know who said that, you know, Washington was over here, uh that Jed Fish was over here doing stuff. So and I don't you don't blame to both parties and come on, Jed's will gather recruited.
It's every man for himself and right there, right there, that's the that's the answer. Jay, don't tell me what how to live my life. Don't tell I won't tell. You know what I'm saying. It's every man for himself. And the rules are the rules now that you can do whatever the hell you want, and you know the circumstances, right yeah. And I mean all this trickled down from the chip Kelly stuff now goes into Arizona because now you have Brent Brennan who played at UCLA. The portal now
opened for your right. The portal opens for thirty day. We'll see what happens. But I mean, you have to think that maybe Arizona's going to be in play for at least some of them, right, right, especially if they these guys don't want to go all the way to Rutgers to play, right, although they're gonna have to go to West Virginia. If you come to Arizona and Central Florida's it's weird. UCLA is this name school? Yeah, this name school, and now you have the head coach to become
an assistant. LA football hasn't been Ucilly football, Troy. It was yeah for a really really long time. Yeah, okay, go ahead. We no that that was all. That was all good news. But I got news that Arizona is a one point five favorite over Colorado one and a half. One and a half, one and a half. That's gonna be here. People are gonna yell at me. But I think they lose tomorrow. Well, we talked about that yesterday. We thought a split would be the
smart movie. The second game on a on a trip is always the hard game. Now, they played triple overtime, you know in Utah they were up late. Uh, it's you know, they played almost a second half, a third half a flip of basketball last night. So if they so go ahead, overtake this, go ahead, I'm gonna go ahead and overtake this. I just think I wouldn't be surprised if they lost. No, And that's it because all this other stuff we don't know until we know.
And he says, well, were you tired? They're not gonna say yes, yeah, late late game. They'll take it easy today and tomorrow. Okay, if if you had to take the game today, what are you taking? I would take a loss. I would take a loss, yeah, only because it's on the road, and we see how they play on the road. Right, there should be a that on on three point for the opponent three pointersbody's hitting more than ten? You did level last night previous
Stanford had fourteen. I think it was to record. I mean, what you tell us what six for six to start teams? Last night? You said that they went one, three to one. I think it was the A zone and Arizona struggles in that situation. Man, they were lucky to get out of that. But again they did get out of Give them credit for doing it, though, Give them credit for the fact that they didn't lose that game last night. Did did you tell me we just buzz you
with that or just saying because it's because he told it. It's because because Steve, I'm sitting here saying that. You know, I get I rip on fans. Yeah, when they're not happy with a win, right, but they won the game? What the hell? What the hell are you? And I get it, But in this particular case, because this happens over and over and over over, it's like, you got You're gonna have
to fix that. Okay, I gotta got more news related to Arizona More directly, Arizona Daily Star put out that Arizona is to permanently eliminate twenty seven million dollars worth of jobs and academic units. Ouch wait wait, wait, where'd you get in this from? There's our day Star. They put it out a couple hours ago. Okay, because I just read the big story that they had on on on Robins over the weekend. It was it was good stuff. Obviously kind of conflicting from the A Boar and him. Yeah,
they went back and forth like correcting each other right over over. They don't know what they're gonna do. What did you say the ninth Yes, okay, that's why okay, okay, twenty seven million dollars in academic staffing worth of Yeah. Yeah, wow, yeah, my kids, I mean that's and that's that's where it hits home. Right, Yeah, I hope my kids not in there. Good luck at him. Yeah, it's just trickle the trickle down. I'm sure. Look, ye as somebody said you
can't keep doing what you're doing. It's not working, and that Mike Andre said that you gotta do something different, and so this is this is deep down beginning, deep down. We had only two minutes. Maybe we'll talk about it. Slater. Do you think sport or two might be even they don't want to? I think so, because if if the Big twelve doesn't have certain sports, then why are you going to play them if you're in the Big twelve? Right, I don't know what those are. I haven't
looked to see what what Arizona plays. That probably beach, yeah, that they just added triathlon, you know some of these, some of these sports. Yeah, I would imagine that when they get into the Big twelve and realize they don't have anybody to play, or that they've got to make up, find a place to play. You know that some of that could could go by the wayside. Maybe get a last one or two in there. Yeah, last one for anyone betting on the well that was interested about the
injury report. Chiefs offensive guard Joe Thuney is out. He's been ruled out. He's been dealing with the injury. They didn't know if he was gonna give it a go, but he's out as of now. So keep that in mind. Who knows if that impacts the game. Christian McCaffrey, Baby, Christian McCaffrey. Put it all on Christian McCaffrey, just right all in the middle on Christian McCaffrey. Remember, remember who's giving you this advice. But I think I saw that the gambling on the game is gonna be thirty
five percent more from the previous year. I mean that's a that's a ton that big numbers. That's a big, big number because every year he gets big. Jack, how you doing. Are you studying? Oh? Yeah, a little bit, Steve. Yeah, it's kind of fun to try to figure out what's going to happen for sure.
Yeah, biggest game of the year for well, but we were talking off and uh, you're talking about you know, how do you you know, how do you go against the Chiefs? Right, they've been there, Patrick Malmes, the whole bit, So you know, would you lean towards more stuff related to how the Chiefs are gonna play and or do you kind of spread it around? Yeah, well, I think the Chiefs are gonna win, so I yeah, I kind of have some ideas on what I'd like
to do if they win. They're plus two point two point five or two whatever they got and the money line is about it even I don't know if you guys have noticed that. So you know, if you're gonna if you're actually think the Chiefs are gonna win, it might be smart just to take the points rather than the money line because the money line is not really that much value. But yeah, I liked a couple of Chiefs props for sure. We we we did our usual thing. We did a bunch of stuff
last night. So what popular bets writer touchdown scores, you know, whether it's the first touchdown or or any time we took the two tight ends, well we did two of them. We took the two tight ends Kittle and Kelsey to e score a touchdown. But you know, if you're laying money on the first touchdown, who do you think you would you would look at? Well, actually I wrote that down. I would look at Lysea Pacheco at plus six fifty. Now that's a big number, plus six fifty.
The Chiefs are really running the ball well. Forty nine ers aren't a great defensive team against the run, as we saw last week or two weeks ago against Detroit. You know, they've had a great year, but they're kind of I think they passed their peak a little bit. They're kind of on the way down and Pacheco. The Chiefs trust Pachecko near the goal, and
of course they trust Mahomes and Kelsey and they like that. But I also think that at six fifty, it's it's not a bad bet to good number gets the first So what do you have the numbers in front of you now or you just kind of knew that? So Kelsey? What about Kelsey scoring the first touchdown? I think he's seven hundred. Oh really even higher than that? Okay, I think I mean you should have you caught me at
a no, I'm looking I'm looking it up right now. I would think that it would be like three fifty or something, but it's a seven. Holy that's a good number now, I'm looking it up right now. But he's even money to score any touchdown. Yeah, and that makes sense right right, And what we did. What we did is we parlayed Kelsey and Kittle to each score touch So we have a leg parlay on that. We got that at uh four and a half to one. Oh, so that's kind of that's kind of low for that, but you know, I mean,
I feel like Kelsey will definitely score a touchdown. It's a question of you know, we'll we'll Kittle get one. Uh, he's you know, they love Kittle though. The one thing about Kansas City has a great set of cornerback so the tight end might be a good play there because he probably the corner of the wide receivers might have some trouble against Kansas City defense, but the tight end that's a smart pin. Well, nobody ever covers either
of those guys. So that's you know, and that's that's kind of where we thought of that. But how does that happen? How is Travis Kelsey always I can't figure that because he's only five for ten. Yeah, six to eighty, whatever it is, I don't know. So what about Christian McCaffrey. Okay, we we got some stuff on we we are hoping have some stuff on him. Kind of going off a little bit. What would you expect from him? What do you like in terms of a proper related
to him? The one I liked about McCaffrey is over thirty three and a half yards receiving, because getting getting back to what I said a minute ago, the Chiefs have a real good secondary and I think McCaffrey's a terrific you know, run after catch guy, right, and I see him. I
see them using him quite a bit. I don't have the staffs in front of him, but I looked that up and I think he's, uh, he's he's over that and most of us in most of the postseason games he's played in the last couple of years here because they rely on him a little bit more in the postseason when they know they have to get him the ball. I mean, you have to get him the ball, right right? Oh yeah, I mean if you're not going to win, if you don't,
what did you guys play. What did you guys play with? We we did over his combined rushing and receiving over one hundred and twenty eight and a half, and then we took and then we parlayed that with his over four and a half receptions. That's yeah, and we got what we We didn't get great odds on that. We just got two points. Yeah, but you don't. You don't need to. You can get it and just move. Yeah. Yeah, you got to feed that. I mean they have to feed that. They just have to see. They have to the
quarterbacks. There are always a bit again, a lot of play on what they do, whether it's passing yards or whatever. In this case, you've got rushing yards on both of them that are that are wagers. The over under on brock Perties passing yards is to forty eight and half. Mahomes is two sixty one and a half. I got a good one on my homes. That might be surprising. I think he'll be under that under, really
under to sixty one. Why because I think they will be able to run so well that they that he you know, he won't have one of these three hundred and twenty yard games. I mean, he's capable obviously he's capable of doing that. I just see them chipping away more than big playing it. And and he's going to get some rusting yards too. It's not all going to be passing from him. One of the one of the sides I looked at. He he hasn't passed for that many yards and liked to last.
Yeah, for the last five the fire in the last six playoff games. In fact, you when you were saying that to Jay and I said, yeah, I think I bet him to go over to eighty last year. It was whatever it was, and they were they played a conservative at the end because they had the lead. So and you're thinking, please pass past, but they need to? Did he need to? So? I
agree with you. I agree with you too under two eighty two having you around there, Yeah, because he's more dinker dunker than sixty one and a half. Well, we took him on the don't I'm sorry, go ahead, go ahead, I'm just saying, I don't know. Raci Rice is on the injury report today with some kind of ankle ankle saying and sure he'll play right, nobody's gonna not play in the Super Bowl. But he's their
best wide receiver. He is probably their only wide receiver, and if he's a little guilty or if he's having a little trouble moving, that takes the secondary weapon away from you know, Kelsey, and then who else you got nobody else. Yeah, you're not gonna play Andrew. You're not gonna play Andrew Toney. I don't think Well. I like the over on Mahomes. We took the over on Mahomes. We actually took the under on Rock Party, uh for under and a half because I think they'll stay they'll they'll stay
conservative and get the ball to McCaffrey to the pretty. The pretty prop I like is over twelve point five yards rushing. Oh yeah, that's good. We took that as well. We took that as well. Yep, yep. He looked good last week against Detroit. Well, I'm a little pissed at him in that in the Detroit game because remember he hit towards on that last drive, he had like a thirty yard run and what I needed from him was a fifteen yard pass to get the over passing yards. Mister will
let me tell you something. Jay's been upset all year and a lot of different things. I was very upset with him. I was very upset with him too that he did that instead of instead of uh throwing the throwing the ball. So anyways, but we actually we parlayed both his party's and Mahomes rushing yards. Mahomes is a twenty five and a half, so we took him with Purties twelve and a half. Yeah, that that's a fun one, fun stuff that we like to do. We have that they'll there will
be a fourth down conversion in the last two minutes of the game. That's a good one. Probably four or five hundred dollars that was that's a five, that's a that's a plus five hundred. So we put a little something on that. It's a fun, right fun. We think both we think both teams will punt in their first possession. So we took that. Okay, okay, wow, that's that's quite a They got a lot. You can bet on anything, right, No, you can bet on anything.
We've got We've got over twenty two and a half for the jersey number of the first person who's player to score touchdown. Procheco's number six or something like number ten, right, But but McCaffrey's twenty three, So you know, and then all the receivers. Jack, this is where I'm come in until Jay that next step. I get it. Well, But you know, looking at stuff like that, Jack, you know that's not focused on a player. You know, are there some things that that you've looked at that
you like? I like Kansas City over twenty three and a half offensively, Wow, I don't. I don't see how San Francisco keeps them under that. And you know that only as we were talking earlier. Mahomes will be the best player on the field. I mean, McCaffrey's very good, but Mahomes will be the best player on the field. And he always finds a way to win a game whatever it takes right, whether it's running, whether it's hitting Kelsey, whatever it does. And so I'm sure they'll score more
than twenty three and a half points. So they lost that Super Bowl a couple of years ago when they're you know, their offensive line was kind of decimated. And one thing tomorrow they are sunny. This guy they're dark. Soon he isn't going to play. It'll probably hurt them, But I just I just see them as a as a grinded out kind of team that'll kind of pull away or maintain control as the game progresses. Is San Francisco's defense
overrated a little bit because of how it's been over the years? Do you think this year? Yeah, well, just the numbers don't make it look very good. They're they're giving up I don't know, one hundred and fifty yards rushing a game and in the last year or in the playoffs or something like that, and that's you know that, that's losing, that's losing stats because the other team gets to control the game and then you've got to jump on offense or else you do you fall too far behind you. I think
they're a little They got good players. Fred Warner is a good player. Bosa obviously is a good player. Jase Shelling is not a good player. I don't know why they really. He doesn't help them much on the defensive line at all. And I know he was a top draft pick from Oho State, but Washington sound on him and he's not helping them at all. Yeah, maybe a little over Yeah, all right, we actually took a Nick Bosa over point two five sacks because he's got to get a half a
sack. Yeah, I know, I know. Mahomes is hard to sack. But we thought that was fun show over him. What Nick Bosa with a half a Oh? I like that a lot, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, two sacks against the Lions. I like Chris Jillons. Chris Jenones is over zero point two five sacks, right, so he's got to get a half a sack, one quarter of a sack. I think he'll get at least one quarter eithern either zero or a half a sack.
So yeah, so that's it. Yeah, that's the kind of stuff that I like because, like I said, we're not watching the game to see who wins. We're watching game to just to have fun, you know, watching stuff happen. We've been doing this too long time. Did you happen to notice who Bosa is? Bosa will probably be lined up against this guy, Jawan Taylor on the Chiefs. He had he was penalized twenty times this year for holding. He's going to be holding h on for dear life.
I don't know if that's a good matchup for the Chiefs. Well, I'm glad you've done that homework, Jack, because it makes me feel a lot better about that bet. Because we didn't do any of that homework. We just took it because we just thoughts got to have a sack. It looks like a smart play going in it probably isn't. Yeah, Well, a fun one that we've done over the years is a successful two point conversion.
We hit it last year. It's uh, it's a it's a plus three six plus three sixty five or plus two sixty five bet plus two sixty five bet. We're all over that. Sometimes the score, the score makes that almost have to happen, and some but like Andy Reid, he'll he'll do anything, he'll do it all. Yeah, they could go for a two
point at anytime. I like it. I like the last play of the game being a deal down at plus two hundred what you know, because I don't you know, it's gonna be crazy if it comes down to the very last second, right, yeah, yeah, you know. We we lost it. We lost a bet a few years ago. I think, uh it was I think it was the Patriots because we had Tom Brady over one yard rushing and he and he had it and then he took a knee and we and we lost because he took the knee. So you got to stay
can't even you can't even consider that anymore. Yeah, yeah, we lost because he took a knee. And and there was one there was something like that the other day. I saw it was on I think it was on Bad Beats. There was in one of the games a running back in one of the playoff games, a running back had had the over his over rushing yards by six yards going into the fourth quarter, and then he ran the ball two more times and he lost eight and he went back. Then maybe
somebody in Detroit and maybe it was somebody in one of those gras. Yeah, that was That's a tough way to lose. That's a tough way to I would be hating life after that one, for sure. All you guys do you just scared me? Both of you guys? All right, Jack, we got about a minute. So you're taking the Chiefs. You're taking the Chiefs either money line or even taking the points if they if they's a little point, Yeah, the money line's about the same. I take the
points. I take you know, Pacheco plus six fifty I think is is I like that? I like the Chiefs over twenty three and a half. What do you you said you were taking the Chiefs the Chiefs over? But what are you taking on the on the over under for the game because it's it's at forty seven and a half. I think it might be under. Yeah. Wow, okay the top of my head, Okay, all right, all right, yeah, you know, they both. The thing about the super Bowl is they pull out all the stocks, so they do all
the trick plays, they do all the all that stuff. The crazy thing is the total is twenty eight. It's even yeah, yeah, the whole whole super Bowl and it's it's gone, but it has gone under for the last five Wow. All right, Jack, it's fun, beautiful, it is fun. Good luck with it. I love this. It's it's it's you know again, it's made the super Bowl fun for us. I mean I get it. If we have to gamble for it to be fun, then we've got a problem. But it's still fun. No, No,
it's five bucks or something exactly exactly. Hey, thanks about Jack, have a great weekend, have fun watching the game. Thanks for having me on to take care you will, Jack Magudd I don't trust both of you get I'm not. Stuff we talked about this last time I had them. That's what I love. That's what I love about doing this too, because it makes you go. You guys are absolutely not. I'm going the other way,
other way all day. So what does that mean to you're taking the you're taking the niners, or you're not taking any No, no, no no, I already got my bet in. You're not telling me what you got Kansas City. He's got Kansas City in August. I went six to get them at sixty one. That's right, that's all you got. Well what's left? Yeah? Yeah, so that's good enough for me. Yeah, because I'll get it in a juice. That's all you need, just a little juice. Just win by one, baby, This is like democracy
by one. No more hanging Chad's okay. Hey, thanks to Jack mcguda for joining us. So we're gonna be back. We'll take your cass five two zero four one six forty and we'll rep we have we have Jake, oh, I take it back. We have Jake Fisher coming up. You're right, Jake. I hope you're not listening because I forgot about you. Jake Fisher will come up and we'll talk a little super Bowl with him to you as well, talk about Chip Kelly and Chip Kelly man. Wow,

Hey, welcome back to Minding the Ball Hero on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve, He's Jake. Now we have Jake. How are you doing, Jake, mister Fisher doing a wonderful Happy Friday, guys, will it be Friday? Hey?
You follow sports very well. You're on Twitter? Did well? I'll ask you what I asked Jay and my guys said, here, do you trust this basketball team that you follow? You know what I think? You know? After the game, I was kind of disappointed. And then when you look back and you kind of figure out that you thought was undefeated at home, that they're a top forty team right now. According to Ken Palm, apparently the fact that they went on a tear to begin the second half
with a three pointer. They actually took the lead after we were up by sixteen and a half. Caleb Love didn't have a really good game, and we were still able to pull it out in three overtimes at home, and the altitude, I'll take it any day of the week, especially since it's pretty damn hard this year to win on the road. In the fact, well that's kind of where I was trying to do that. But then I was being very critical of what they're doing, you know, with just with
the three point shooting and all that's happening there. But in the end, you do have to just be appreciative of the fact that that was a game that in a lot a lot of times they would have lost that game, and yet they won the game, and we probably shouldn't be too unhappy with it. No, And you know, I think they did get a little lackadaisical like they normally do on the road against you know, and they're not like technically an inferior opponent, like they're pretty damn good at home, like
they were twelve and zero at home until last night. So I just think escaping there with the win is all that you can ask. I think the real test is going to be coming off a three, you know, overtime game, going up to into Boulder and playing another really good team who hasn't lost it home, so we'll see. I think that we have the guys that are old enough and they got enough experience to pull that one out. But to be honest with you, we needed to win at least one of
these two games to remain in first place. And I think that after this this trip. I think the only other time we might you know, slip up is going to be maybe when we go to the LA schools. But you know, I don't see it's really losing to many more games, if not any. So okay, I talk to you about the team. Now, what about trusting Caleb Love. I mean, Caleb Love is such a
weird, a weird dude. I mean, it's it's crazy the fact that he went five for twenty and I think he hit two or three of his most critical shots in the last couple overtimes, So it's like he had a terrible game by his standards. He had like a game that you would normally see last year when you were trying to do too much at Carolina, and
you still trust him to take that last shot. It's just, you know, you have very few of those guys that don't let that stuff get to him and they're still not afraid to take those You know, he could be that closer for you. And I think the fact that he was able to make some of those big shots and he continues to do it even when he has a game that doesn't go so well for him. The one thing about
him I'm like Boswell. If he's not scoring, he's kind of like telling away where he's still going to get rebounds, he's still going to make good passes, and he's still going to try his butt off on defense. I need that to rub off on Kylin a little more. Kylin has been playing better, but I think Caleb Love is doing more than just scoring. And I think as long as he continues to hustle on the defensive end, make good passes, get rebounds, you know he can make any shot that he
takes. So let me ask you, did your big screen survive when Caleb Love shot it from the you? I think it was the second overtime. What's crazy is I thought that was going in. I thought that was going in. I put my hands up, I started walking way and then I hear a client apparently you got the loudest damn rims in the package. Well, but yeah, no, I I you know I threw something. It
just didn't hit the TV. I already see it happening. Already's going to show up on TikTok going in these days, busting the TV and throwing it out in his backyard or something like one of those Mac cowboy those cowboys TV. Well, you know, and the thing is, like, you know what Steve and I have been talking about is that you know, you want to believe that they're going to fix this, or that you know that they're paying attention to it, and and these things with these teams keeps happening.
And these teams aren't as good as the teams they're going to face in the n C Double A tournament. Maybe only Utah of you know, the four that they've lost, not for they've lost for the teams that have shot well against him in the Back Cup, Only Utah might be a tournament team. I mean, does it drive you crazy or are you nervous about it? When you're you know A you're gonna be thinking about this when they get to
the n C Double A tournament. Well, the way that I look at it, and it shouldn't be this way just because you have so much you know, veteran leadership on the team. I mean, you're starting four seniors. They just look like they get bored against teams they know they're going to
be. So I really want to see how they play come the facts of tournament because it's a one and done type thing in the tournament, I know they want to stay in Vegas more than one night, and when it comes down to the point where it's either we win or go home, that's when I think this team with US veteran leadership is really going to do well.
I think that with the emergence of Colin Boswall over the last couple of games, the fact that kJ Lewis is playing so well, the fact that you still you know, you're getting awesome contributions on the defensive side, and even last night's touring twenty seven points with Pella, I think key shot the last game looks pretty damn good. A couple of those big time offensive rebounds really
saved or Bacon in the overtime. I also think that the fact we still trust Caleb Love to take a big shot even though he's five or twenty at whatever point. The one thing, and I still trust Jayden Bradley if Kylan's not doing so well. The one thing that I really need is if you know, if we're not getting offense from Lumar Bala or he gets in foul trouble and the other team has a big guy like U Saw had last night,
I need to see him. Mary the Creeve US, I mean, I think you know, it's hard to really get him caught up with very little season left to go, but I mean the fact is, if we can just get a solid ten to fifteen minutes out of him, this team would be so much better off. Like if you can get some of these young guys, I trust kJ but like Kyland and I think kreeve Us, if those guys start playing solid consistently, this team would be so much better.
So you mentioned something that Tommy said last night to Bruce in the post games. He's comfortable with Caleb taking the shot one because he's not afraid. I think you said the same thing, probably without reading that quote. But just because you're not afraid to shoot it doesn't mean that you're that you should be shooting it. Yeah, but when it comes down to it, shooters are going to shoot number one. He's been there before and he's not afraid
of the moment. Last year you saw against Princeton we were playing hop potato, no one wanted to take the damn shot. So I mused to have somebody, you know, with the wherewithal and with the the guts to put it up there. And we've seen him make big shots and final fours before
we've seen them, you know. I mean, listen, when he was at Carolina, he beat Coach K. In his last game at Duke, he beat Duke, you know, a few games later in the final four, and then when Coach K was there to watch the Matt Duke he iced it with four street free throw. So I still trust him in those big time situations. And that's always nice to have. Yeah, yeah, all right, switching gears a little bit. Do you see the news on Chip
Kelly today. I think that's funny. You know. I laugh at UCLA and I laugh at Jed, because that's the job that Dead wanted, according to everybody. And you know, Chip decided to leave so late that they're not going to be able to really recoup a lot of losses that they have, and they're going into the Big ten. And I just think it's hilarious that he basically wants to go and be an offensive coordinator instead of being a
head coach, and he's going to take a pay cut doing it. So hey, listen, you know, I'm not upset that Usal is going to be struggling. The only thing that I hope they don't do is hire away Tony White from Nebraska. That's the one thing that would hurt a little bit. Other than that, I'm glad that they're not going to be going, you know, in the right direction here. The dynamic itself is just strange.
Could you have this guy who had so much at Oregon went to Philly, had so much you thought he still had still had it with him, the panash going to Ucla. Now he's an assistant coach at Ohio State. Well you remember when he was at Philly and you know, our boy folls through seven touchdowns and then you know, later on in that year he ended up getting benched for whatever reason because he wanted to play his organ guy. So I think he's great at x's and o's. I think he rubs people
the wrong way. I mean, certainly when I met him over at the Paxel media day, he rubbed me the wrong way. So, you know, and he probably doesn't want to go out recruit. He probably would just like to coach. And I guarantee, what the nil and all the other crap that's going on, he probably just wants to coach. So they're gonna have all of that taking care of for him over at Ohio state and he's probably just gonna, you know, basically get to run the offense and don't
have to worry about anything else. Well, there's a lot of that, you know, you mentioned that, you know, guys who don't want to deal with the nil they don't want to do, you know, with all the stuff that goes with recruiting, transfer portal and all that other stuff, and is the head coach You're doing so much more of that than than the exes and ohs. We're seeing a lot of this where these coaches are just saying, I don't want to do that anymore. I'm gonna be an assistant
somewhere where I don't have to deal with it. I'm gonna go to the NFL where you know, we go get players and then we coach those players. Right, It's like I hied, you know, you hired me to coach. I don't want to have to go out under as. I don't want to have to be in you know, ten different states, you know, every two weeks. I don't want to have to go and visit people
in their homes. I mean, there are some places like I feel for some of these guys going and getting some of the top talent in the Midwest, where you know, the closest airports to where some of these kids play and live like two and a half to three hours away a long night. You don't get to see your family a lot. And to be honest with you, you know, if you just let me coach, and that's what I love to do, and I don't have to do any of the other
stuff surrounding that, I take that too. Do you I think he was like just above five hundred thirty five and thirty four whatever it was at UCLA. But do you think that he was found out just on how good of a coach he is now and that he didn't want to go through another year where in a bigger conference where he'd really be found out. I don't really know if it was necessary that he was or necessarily found out. I think that at Oregon he always had one of the top you know, three to
five rosters in the entire country. You know, he always had some of the fastest guys track wise, he almost had you know, he always had some of the biggest, meanest, you know, interior offensive linemen. You always have that system quarterback that is smart enough to get it to a little guy you know that can move well in space, and and they just went fast, so they wore people down. You know, when it comes down to it, he didn't have a you know, a Merriota or one of
those guys over at UCLA. And remember he had the back end of Nike. So I mean, shoot, you get a different uniform every single time that you play. And there are some people that for whatever reason, that's one of the reasons why they commit there. And they had unbelievable facilities. UCLA just didn't have the draws. And the thing is in you know, when you're in LA, it's almost like hey, Oregon and sc and then UCLA is kind of an afterthought. Yeah, yeah, no question, no
doubt. All right, Jake, what do you got for us? Job? Boys? Guys still doing the health insurance If you guys want to work with a fellow wildcat, give me a call. you the rest of the day. That powder blue and gold. Yeah, look what it did for them. You know. Look, I mean Chip was clearly never the guy for that job. No, he was water. He was yeah, totally completely, he knew it. Everybody else knew it. And he's gonna go over to House State And I said, he's gonna
coach. He's just going to coach the offense and he's going to have the you know, some of the best players in the country year in year oute and that's as good as it gets and good for him, and that's what he's gonna do.
