This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jakin Salis on Fox Sports fourteen fifteen powered by Nova Services. Hey sure your most prized possessions katz R two side at iHeart Radio Station. Hey, good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to I on the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. I'm Steve Rivera, the jakins Os got our guy Jason for the last day. Get your tissues out one more time. Man, I'm saying Jason donuts or something.
Brot Brown brought the brownies. Dang it. We'll see him again tomorrow. Yeah, he's still Yeah, he's still going to see more, more than he wants. We'll get you a couple. I'll do this for Jay. I'll get you a brownie at the media of pregame for you, a n au Okay, yeah, have you been to a game before? Yeah? This service brownies maybe maybe sometimes they do time. Okay, Yeah, I'll get you in there. No need to get up. Okay, Steve appreciate it. He's not going out of his way. Yeah. Yeah, I
don't know how that makes you feel. Jason. It's all right. Wait, wait, he's the one that should have brought something. He said, I mean, jawd, you forget man's family. Man right too. He's the guy with we'll take care of this. Okay, we'll take care of this. And you're two. We're two dudes, dude, we don't think about yeah, I mean yeah, you know yeah, and one and one of us doesn't have a wife, so she's not gonna think you throw the trash trash coming single, dude, trash dishes. Okay, Hey, welcome
to Friday. Yep, finally here, we've got scrimmage tomorrow. Hopefully had no Hurricane Hillary coming in and crashing didn't. Well, I was telling you they've they've already canceled, not canceled, but changed the games, rescheduled the games for Sunday in the LA area. The Angels, the Padres of the Dodgers. I know, I know it said. The Dodgers are playing a double or tomorrow against the Marlins instead of playing you know, one tomorrow,
one Sunday. So they're already preparing for that. So it's supposed to hit California on Sunday. Away. Good, Yeah, we're good. But it's been nice outside today. It's muggish, but it's good. But you know, there's a kind of a cool breeze, kind of nice, not bad, a cross summer breeze. And you don't even know who seals and cross, so y'all would not expect you. Yeah, okay, so today we
have a nice show. Yeah, you know the new coach at ATUH Tucson High or Tucson Magnet School or whatever you want to call it, zach or Zachary never left? Right? Is that you pronounced it? Never left? Never left. He's the new guy there, just hired. You know. I heard him on somebody else's show and he sounded pretty impressive, so you did. Yeah, yeah, so we'll, uh, you know, get him on. He sounds pretty excited. I did uh to be there,
so we'll talk to him. And you know, as we continued kind of trying to roll in some high school football coaches here, you know, we need to talk to Morana coach because, man, did you see what happened in school yesterday? It's funny how it's gonna I talk to some of the people from Randa. So we didn't get it. It must have been just
like a dump open area. Well, you know, when Morana High School is kind of oout the middle of nowhere, it's you know, remember used to be by the freeway way back in the day, down the middle of nowhere on Sandario Road out there. There's not a last time I was out there, there was not a whole lot out there. But it sounds like it just ripped right through there, tore up the school and knocked a bunch
of trees down, power lines down. I guess a bunch of students cannot even leave for a while because the lines that were down, and the flooding all around the school look crazy. And the and the and the football field got flooded. They're putting in or they have new AstroTurf in there, and it's it's a it's a mess underwater. Yeah. And Tucson High we went through that a few years ago. Yeah, well that was that was a drainage issue that they had, but its flooded. But it shouldn't have flooded.
It flooded because there were other problems. There were problems with either with the installation or the drainage that was that was set up there that didn't that it didn't drain and it filled up with water basically. So it looks kind
of crazy. So so we'll have him on then at four fifteen or usual uh, Friday afternoon with Jake Fisher, see what he's at, what he's got on his mind, as we had for the uh you know, last really open practice of football tomorrow with the with the scrimmage six thirty at the stadium. So we'll see how that goes. Yeah, we'll see what happens. Two weeks before the first game next week, everything starts in earnest something you've been waiting for since me. Yeah, Well, there's some games.
They're like about six or seven FBS games on Saturday of next week, including Rich Rode his first game at jackson Jacksonville State taking on UTAP at home. Is at home. He's got him at home, Tips going there, and that's with one of our guys, Deil, right, Dana Demil, Dana Demil. We've got there's gonna be Navy Notre Dame in Dublin in the morning. You've got usc is going to be playing in San Jose State. So there's some interesting, you know, stuff to just kind of wet our appetite
a little bit, right, right, So that's fun. Obviously, the Major League Baseball of season is coming to a close with one more month left. First month, about a month and a half left. Dodgers are on a roll. They won their eleventh straight last night. They've won their fifteen and one in August. Maybe the kiss of death has been struck dead. No, I've been saying that. Hey, I've been saying it. With their straight I've been saying there, you know, their nine game winning streak,
ten, ten game winning streak. I'm not even I can't kill this one. So they won last night on a on a solo homer by a one twenty five hit. Or hit his first homer of the year, first game of the year where he had more than one hit. Austin Barnes, the backup catcher, and he went yard in a zero zero game in the bottom of the eighth, and hey, one one did nothing. Yep, And you know, I was kind of watching what do they have next? They got the Marlins coming in. Okay, do you think they can keep
this up? So? Well, they're at home, so that's a that's a big deal. They've been They've been great at home all year long. So you know, I've got a three game set with the Marlins, and then they got the Rangers coming in, so we'll see how that goes. You know the Rangers are good. Yeah, yeah, so we'll see, But do you want to be the best. Just keep winning, man,
just keep winning their ten games up uh in the National League West. Okay, anybody want a call, please do five two zero four one six seventy four forty. Would appreciate your call. Listener Bills already giving me crap about talking about the Dodgers, Bill Bill, listening listener, Bill, I think you got one of his answers for yesterday from McKee. Scott McKee. He had asked me about where he was at he was at and then he's an
assistant coach with yeah over here with peace right right? Okay again, anybody want to call in five two four six thirty four forty. We'd appreciate your call. Text, you can text us, you can email us, you can do all kinds of ways to get a hold of us and yell at right right right right, okay. Uh. Soccer, I'm sorry, breaking news, not much. It was regular season game. Yeah, yeah, first one. Wildcats got bat two to one. As uh, sounds like
they came out a little slow defensively. They went up one nothing and within a few minutes there was one one and then they got bat two to one, although I hope Heis did uh did stop a penalty kick, you know, some sometime during the game. But you know they went up there in last two to one. We we know the Heisie and mister Heisi baseball he uh. She seems like he's been here for like twenty years. Hope,
Yeah, she's been. I mean she got the you know, she got the extra she got the extra COVID year, and then I think, you know next she'd stayed for you know, fifth years. Did you have the soccer thing from the United States women? Yeah, you got that. Okay, I want anything there, Okay, Yeah, So soccer has been in the news. Volleyball start chair pretty soon too. You gonna get some Pima soccer. They're gonna host the national title again, right right, and PEMA
volleyball is getting ready to start. So a lot of seasons getting ready to go. Okay. And the basketball team I think has a twinal game tomorrow Morrow, six o'clock in the morning, six our time. Okay, you can watch on YouTube. I don't know if it's gonna be the same, it's the same thing where there you just got a guy with a camera if there's actually gonna be a broadcast up the game? Oh is that what it was? Yeah? The last time it was it was it was it was
their you know, their staff with a with a camera. They hooked up a live feed to to YouTube and they ran it. They it was just the camera. There was no no you could just watch them. There was no h like your it was like you you're spectating right. There was no uh, no commentary or anything like that. Okay, I mean they getting Nate on Nate, Nate on the mic. Man, don't you think send him and not somebody get on the mic? So Buddy tells what's going on?
Yeah. Yeah. But the interesting thing did you see the post by Umar Bellow? What was by Umar Bells by the basketball department? Basketball office? But but Umar, you know he's Muslim, so he went to this mosque. Yeah, holy crack, did you you should That building was crazy? Yeah. I think I saw on my feet. I mean it's just you know, it was. He was so I don't know what the right word is, almost emotional kind of you know, spiritual and touched by it.
It was a big deal. And maybe maybe think of when I went to Saint Peter's at the at the Vatican. I'm a Catholic, so I went to that and I told you guys, I got real religious, real fast. Yeah, and then he left and then I left. I got in there, didn't get hit by lightning, didn't fall into you know, bad of flames. Even the Holy water saying please don't touch that didn't get and I didn't get burned by the Holy water. The Pope was there, and you know, he didn't like point him me and say get him out
of here. You see those movies for the lightning strike, it didn't happen survive the original the Omen right where that that priest gets gets think it was scary movies When I was a kid, that was actually scary. Was the first exercist was the graveyard scene of that movie. It was just like the scariest movie scene ever. Yeah. Anyways, we we digress. But it seemed real cool for for for Ballot to go through that and be up and see that, and he was just he was just fascinated by the whole thing.
Cool. Yeah, Okay, what else. It's that it's kind of a slow not a slow Friday, but looking forward to next week. School students or students are back, and I feel like things are, you know, kind of building up right. We've kind of we've kind of put the all the realignment stuff, you know, behind us. Except I did go
read the athletics article today on the whole realignment timeline did. Did the stories that you read two or three a couple of them, there was one times and then one by one by that where they differing in terms of it's pretty much the same thing. You kept getting other small details in there, Like the detail that I picked up, uh in the one today was how USC put the brakes on what would have been a merger of the Big twelve and
the PAC twelve back right after Texas and Oklahoma left. And how how powerful I guess or influential that she was is that the discussion came up, she said no, and that ended the discussion and that was it. The discussion was over. It's the president, the president of of of of of USC, and then less than a year later they were off to the Big Ten. Sometimes my questions have obvious answers, and I know the answer. So, so USC has always been has has USC always been that elitist of the
group. Yeah, So that's not a surprise, and only because of football, because they're crapping everything else. Yeah, you know, I mean they've been good in baseball over the years, but not lately. And basketball has been you know, hasn't won a Pac twelve championship like ever. You know. So it's foot it's it's football. And she just came out and said we're not doing this, and so that that ended the conversation, right, And nobody pushed back on that. Yeah, And I said to you,
nobody said what if? And I said to you, even though probably USC and UCLA were packages or a package, that why not come back after they've left and said, okay, guys, you have ten teams. Now let's try to do this again. And luck they have got put in it called to your mark, right, your mark, and yet they said, well, we're not interested. Oh, your mark wasn't interested. The Big twelve
was once USC and ecl are gone. They were not interested in the merger with right, but why because you're too, because your two best teams were your two your two TV markets were gone, right, you know, and so and then uh, I was just thinking there was another piece that another thing that well, let me ask you before you said, was there a chance in any of those stories that the PAC twelve could have survived the PAC
ten. Now it could have survived at any moment besides besides the last when they when the when when ESPN offered him thirty million dollars, then they snubbed their nose right right, right right. And then when they said there was a there was a professor at a school, and everybody's assuming it was ASU who said, no, we can get We're worth PAC twelve is or pack. The rest of the pack is worth fifty. And nobody pushed back on
that. They said, oh, okay, let's go get fifty and and and George Klafkoff and nobody that was advising him said, dude, you're not You're not getting fifty. They just said, you know, this professor at a school presented some analysis that said you can get fifty, and so they ran with it. I thought the professor was from USC, but no, it was a name. No, this was after USC, A horse a professor from you don't everybody's assuming it was from ASU, but it's not.
She's not identified, he's not identified. It's not identified. Everybody's assuming it was from ASU because that president is the one that told claf go get us fifty and everybody things Michael Krom Yeah, so well it is what it is. It's done. You read the you read these two stories, and you realize how many things it depends on how you look at it had to fall in place or had to go wrong for the PAC twelve to be where it won. Let me say this, Jay, and I've been here right as
the Oh we gotta go. Uh, I'm okay with the change. I'm okay with the change. It didn't have to happen. No, it didn't have. Of course, this is what I'm thinking, is what I'm saying, And I wish it had, but it did. So here we are, okay, let's go all right, let's let's take a break. We're gonna get the Tucson High football coach Zach Green never left coming up right. You're looking at me funny. I am looking at you funny because I'm hoping
that we've got them earlier you didn't think. I'm just looking at you thinking I might have. But you told me Jake was three fifteen. That's the
we'll sort this out during the break, right right. back to WIN on the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. He's Jakin's ass. Now on Foam, we have Jake Fisher coming in a little earlier than we thought. Thanks Jake. What are you guys doing well? We're doing okay. And Friday, you know it's Friday. Hey, I wanted to ask you something real quick because do you and I'll bring up the point after I ask you the question, do you get glee in fighting with people on Twitter? And not that you thought with people on
Twitter today? But do you get glee in the discussions? I do, because I mean, I mean, I have a team that I root for, obviously, but I'm not so biased. I'm gonna go ahead and say that, you know, USC's quarterback isn't good that type of stuff, and people do that all the time, and I just you know, when I'm scoring through Twitter whenever I have a moment in the day, just I like trolling people a little bit. So I mean, it's not really a passions
a hobby. Well, let me ask you to bring it up. I saw that you had made a comment on one of the guys that I think that Jay thinks or you know, reads a lot. The college basketball won for Twitter, yea, and he talked about or they talked about the top five teams in each conference, and Arizona wasn't not even so, and there day it was sc UCLA, Colorado organ and then a SU who's gonna be
absolutely awful. Right, No, right, I don't understand it. It's one of those things where it's like it's almost like they for Arizona was in the past twelve Yet I still just don't have any understanding how somebody can be that done. That was well, like I kind of I thought, I almost thought, did they mix up a SU in Arizona or something like that?
Even then they were fifth. If that would have been the case, it would have been fifth, which makes you're still behind Oregan, Colorado and a UCLA team that, in my opinion, is probably going to be rebuilding a little bit, even though I think they should have been where Asu is or Colorado is or sorry Organs. But then again, you know, sc they're gonna be about Brownie James probably from what I've heard, I don't know if anything has changed since then. I don't think they're gonna be able to
score enough points. Like I said, Ucla, mccrone's gonna have a bunch of you know, young European guys that probably don't like to play to slow down and you know, grinds yeow type of ball, So it might take it a little bit of time for them to get their stuff together. Organs has been kind of spiraling, even though they always have really good players. I'm not sure if they just don't buy into the system whatever it might be.
Colorado I think might legit be one of the top three because they're talented. But then again, tat Boyle, I just don't know if he's a great coach. Yeah, yeah, I mean I guess I didn't know that Colorado was supposed to be any good this coming year. You know, that surprised me a little I know people are sick. You know. Well, first of all, they're talking about USC you know what they think Bronnie James might not even play, So what the hell's going on there? So I
don't know. I don't know what to make of all these games. That's because they have the number one recruiting class in the PAC twelve of this past year, probably, But at the same time, I'm not sure how good of a coach their guy is. You know, he can recruit. I don't know if they can really develop young talent. It's almost like every time somebody comes in, it doesn't look like they get better. They're just already good. And that's why they get to the NBA, right, No,
no, no question about that. Yeah. So now we have like one day before the final scrimmage. Do you remember those times for you and did it get easier or harder as you start to rev it up for the game?
It gets easier when we start to rev up for the games. The practices are always grueling, but the game's always you know, they bring a little bit more out of you every now and then during the middle of the season, whether it's you're on a little bit of a losing shriek or you know, you've come off too really hard fought games and you might look down on an opponent. And if you're a young guy, sometimes you do that. The old guys know, you know from experience that you don't do that
type of stuff. But you know, if you have a team that's got a lot of old guys, not old, but a lot of veterans on it, normally that doesn't happen. But it's always fun leading up to a game because you get to go out and hit somebody else in a different color uniform. There's this scrimmage tomorrow. It's kind of the last time we get to we get to see them. Uh, how I guess how you know, how much do you guys go go at that? You know, in terms of you know, playing hard? What are you trying to show?
You know what? How do you how do you treat the like this last scrimmage of camp before you start getting ready for the you know, for the season. Well, I don't think they're going to show everything. I guess
they're planning ast Lebanon. I literally just got considered reading about it. Jason Sheer said, they're actually a really good team if they bring their entire squad to play us, So you know, it wouldn't be surprising if we lose because we're playing against the Guns, the bunch of grown men who played professionally. If we do win, obviously that's going to be very impressive. But at the same time, I think our big need to do a little bit
more. I think Crevius has done well, but followed because he's a little out of shape, is going to need to obviously bang down there a little bit. And then if our guards can you know, kind of pick their pockets like we've done the first two games and get some easy baskets, I think we can actually stay in the game. But it's a scrimmage. He's just gonna tell him to play hard, and he's been starting different lineups,
so we haven't found that you know, starting five or sure. I know Bollo is probably gonna start the season, but I mean crev Us the way he's playing, and some of these other young guys that look, man, you know, I just hope that we find a starting five years soon so that we go into the you know, the regular season we're going. Uh. One of the other Twitter guys said, you can't read too much into these games and you shouldn't and you shouldn't at all starting lineup or whatever,
but you must like what you see. I know I do. Yeah, Well, it's just it shows the ability and you know, we don't even have the continuity that we're going to have even halfway through the season yet. So and then both of those teams, you know, love that they're playing hard, but their inferior opponents. So until we kind of find who are you know, eight to nine men rotation is until we kind of see some
of these guys, you know, step up the big games. And until these guys play you know, a few games with each other, they goes to a couple of battles together, you know, playing against the professional team obviously, then we're not going to know how good they can be. But the good thing is they're playing hard. The shots are not falling that much. But I think this team's defensive ability is going to be the best one that Tommy kat obviously since he's been here. Caleb Love is playing great.
He's not just trying to take over the game. He's actually playing within the offense, you know. And like I said, some of those freshman kids from Withthuania, those two that came over here, they looked really good. I think one of the things that's going to be improved, uh you know, hopefully for them, is the the toughness of them. Yes, yeah, no, I think I think it's key shot, just the ball of energy. Obviously, Babbo has always been tossed down low. We just need
to give it in shape. You know, you look at Boswell, Uh you know, you look at Bradley. Both of those guys are gonna be tough point guards that like to get into people's you know, faces, and then they like picking those guys up full court, which is awesome. You can't do that against everybody, but you can do it enough to, you know, make somebody irritated and they might make a mistake. Caleb love Is, you know, obviously he's tough. I mean he's he's been getting in
people's faces defensively too. I like that. And you know, even some of the young guys, they've been playing great. I mean crebas is walking m your four shots a game, and I know, like I said, there, it's against interior opponents, but he looks good, moralitious. I think I said that name right, He's he looks tough. JJ obviously is
tough. Hella is obviously tough. So you've got a bunch of guys that are you know, they're gonna be able to buckle down to play some good defense, and when you're in close games and your your shots not falling, that's going to help us win some of those close games. Yeah. Yeah, And again what we've been saying is they look a lot like what we would expect him to look. Look like that's a bridge, which is better.
I mean, don't you think even when they had NBA guys two three years ago, I think they're more athletic cross the board than than he's ever than he ever had, right right, Yeah, I agree. Yeah,
And this is Tommy's most complete team in my opinion. You don't have a been mancher and who's going to be the number of six or whatever it was overall picked by the Pacers, But you have a bunch of guys that are going to hold wall potentially you know, potential professional careers, and I like to have they put a little flavor of about you know, world basketball,
like the Siva basketball. But then you've still got the guards that are going to get up in your face and they're gonna pressure you it's pretty damn cool. Yeah, it's It's been a lot of fun, for sure. So let's talk. Let's talk some football. Now, last scrimmage of the year of this, you know, before the before camp gets going, so we will be anxious to get started on prep for the you know, for the first game. Well, you know, how much did you how much did
you put into the you know, the final scrimmage? You know, what are these last few days of what they call camp? Like, oh, shoot, my my senior year, they told my old ass to sit down and just let some of these younger guys get some rest for the last one. You know, you have some guys that are already proven, Yes, some guys that you might have to count on playing in the season, so you might want to get them, you know, a few more reps. But it's fun because as soon as that thing is done, you're like,
oh, we finally get to play Nau or whoever it is. Then you're playing. So you know, as soon as it's over, it's great. It's kind of the end of the grueling part of camp. And now let's just I get to hit some money in a different color jersey, so let's go. Yeah, and that must be a good feeling. It's a very
good feeling. I mean you're literally hitting your own linemen every play, and you know, especially when we were in the rich rod era, I mean there are you know, practices where we went for damn near two and a half hours. It seemed like in the hundred and fifteen not that hotit you know, one hundred and five hundred and ten degrees heat and you're running sprinting the entire damn practice. So as soon as you're done, it's like great. You know, we might have a couple periods where you have to go
ball to the wall, but now we get to actually do install. We get to learn about how to fit up their offense. What are their tendencies? Do you do a little bit more film, a little bit more study, and a little bit less getting your head knocked up. Let me let me ask you something. We talked about this a couple of days ago when we saw it. Udon Sanders is at scrimm practice, these guys getting a fight in house. Uh did you see that? Yeah? I don't know
how the hell to feel about that. I mean it's one of those things where it's like, you know, he may have gotten taken out of context. I don't know, but it could have been one of those things where like, hey, you know, we had to stick up. You know, everybody's one unit, that type of thing. But if it's the other thing where it's like, yeah, you know, if it was intentionally, hey, you know, if your guy gets into a fight on the field,
everyone goes, then that's just stupid. I don't understand what the hell of mentality is there if it's on you know, a football field. We talked about that because it's I've never seen that. I've never seen that before. I know the guy. The coaches we've talked about it said get the hell off the field. You could cost us some yards, you could be thrown out of the game whatever. I mean. I've had coaches where if you have two guys and they addressed this at the beginning of camp, the
beginning of spring, whatever math. But we've had a couple of coaches where it's like, hey, listen, if you guys are gonna fight, nobody else jump in. You're not doing a dog pile, cheap shot crap like that left those guys you know less on the ground. Don't throw any punches because you're gonna break you know, a dam, a risk or fun or something on a face. Math that's really stupid. I've seen that happen a couple of times. But then as soon as you get outside of the white
lines, you two have absolutely no grudge with each other. That was it, you know what I mean. So it's like if you're gonna throw a punch on the helmet, you know, don't use your fists, you know, use your palm, do something. But nobody jumps in you guys as soon as you gets out of the white lines, because it does get tested, you guys have no grudges. I was gonna say, have you ever felt like get into one of those with a teammate. I've gotten in a
couple of those. I got uh. You know, I was just messing around with Chris Putton and he came over from behind me and tripped the hell out of me, and then there was a little bit of a dog pile there and we all got yelled at uh, and then we had one probably
my first, yeah, my first day of pads as a freshman. I hit a receiver going across the middle and I started walking back to get the play call from Coach Kish kick, came up and pushed me, so I pushed him back, and then all of a sudden, you see Trevor Erno coming out of the corner of nowhere and he does like a Superman punch, and then all of a sudden, there's a giant dog pilot and then we
ran the rest of practice. Yeah, so it serves no purpose, it does Yeah, it's it's and it's nothing person and only you know, he came up after practice and he was like, hey, nice set man. I'm like, okay, God, there's no you know, no feelings there. It's just you know, you're you're competing and you know, you're trying to a damn spot and things get testy. Yeah. Uh so, uh, I don't know. We're you know, we're finally talking football, which
is fun. I'm you know, I know, we keep bringing it, bringing it up a little bit, but it's it's nice to talk some football, but it's it's still weird feelings about this, uh this season coming up right. Let you know, I was hearing some podcasts talking about, you know, as you as a player, Let's say you're playing for Oregon State, are you gonna go out and want to kick some ass? A little more on some of these teams who were leaving. Does it matter to you?
Does that not enter into your thought process and vice versa? You know, right, you know when you're when you're uh, you know, when you're going out on the field. It is it part of Is it part of it or not? I mean it could be. I mean the guys
from Oregon State, Washington Day, Stanford, and Cal. I think Sanford and Cal aren't going to be very good this year, but anyways, they might come out and say, hey, listen, Colorado, you're the one that kind of broke the straws back, and then Arizona you followed up, and then you other two guys jumped out with them and lost us a bunch of money. So there might be a little bit of motivation behind it, especially because they're not gonna get paid as much as they would have, you
know, from here on out. For the guys that are leaving, you know, for greener pastures. I hope they don't look down on a couple of those teams, because, I mean, Cal they have the athletes, even I don't think they're gonna be great this year. And Oregon Stain Washington Stator book they're be tough. So I don't think that a team like a Utah or even Arizona now just because you know, we're kind of on the ascension. You know, we're going up, and uh, you know,
I think we're hungry to do more. So I don't think they'll look down on anybody, but you never know, as you might. You know, I kind of hope they do, just because it's fun watching them loose. And then I don't think color Colorado can either be like you know, somehow get to a Bowl game or literally win one game this year. I have no idea what that's going to look like. I have no idea, but it's gonna be fun to watch. Yeah, Okay, Jake, what's up

not, uh a fan or how are you? However you word you know, you don't think you said. I'm I guess I'm a sports fan, but I'm not a fan of sports. Yeah, how do you accurate? However you say it? All right, we're coming up on football season. Okay, what are you looking forward to? I'm looking if anything really good? Question? Uh? You way? You way? Football? I want to see how good Judd does for the third year, uh, with with more experienced to better talent, because first year, what do we think no
talent. We didn't know how good of a coach he was, and it got bad fast, and it got bad fast. He was able to win a game. Remember remember after the BYU game though, we thought, hey, yea, because how we might have something here there? And then they were down fourteen to nothing before he even got in the stadium at the San Diego State that weekend it was probably a losing weekend in Vegas anyway combined. And then then you beat him and I'm like, okay, this is really
bad. Oh. I just remember how he looked after that. He was like someone had just beat the crap out of it something really really, like a really bad It was like, Holy moly, is this how it's going to be? And then he got better obviously you want I wanted to kind of know last year can he play call? Because I was a question that got really good and you, like you said, wouldn't you have better play? Better player? You can call better play? Right? So he did
that. I don't know, just a market improvement to your point. I went to another website thing and it was not four and a half, it's five. It's five. That's five everywhere, So they must have changed. I've not seen anywhere. I was looking hoping to four and a half in one place and a long time week a month ago. Okay, I haven't seen it again right now, Yeah, I haven't seen it. Yeah, and I wouldn't know, because that's a great bed. If it's four and
a half, five is fantastic. But I don't know. That's what I'm looking forward to. NFL. I haven't even looked at what I usually do make my picks. But college football with Arizona. Yes, I might even buy a ticket and I'll go to the game and just have somebody else cover it. Wow, come to a tailgate or something? Yeah, well I do anyway, I have come and hang out with us. You know, I have some I have a drink or two. Yeah, drink or two.
Yeah, I might do that if we're there, If you were calling ahead, we're realizing we're getting really Oh can I get the reservation place? My thoughts are setting up, you know, because we set up a couple three of those tents, right, we set up three of them. I
figured that's what's got of setting those up and breaking those down. I think that's what has you that want to do hard, especially if the young dudes are not there to help you, right, Okay, So so anyway, what you're looking forward to, yes, and not so much national you know it happens. I like doing it, but I don't really pay attention. Yeah I do, but I don't, you know, live for it. If if we couldn't gamble on stuff? How much? Oh, I did
the same. It's the same, because I don't do that just for your picks. You do some you could do some partlays on the weekends or something not very real, very just when you're just on your thing. Okay, yeah, yeah, no, because I don't follow it well enough. Well need to. That's that's the gab. No, I don't like no unless I have hunches. But no, not really. Yeah, because it's it doesn't you know, it doesn't really turn then, do you do? You
do you like just the whole in the fall? You know, looking forward to Saturdays. I like even getting the Thursday. Yeah, you're right, you're you're if I'm a three, which I'm not a three. If I'm a four or five, you're an eight or nine at the least, right, I really look sometimes I really look forward to college football season. I'm in a big way, and not just for the U A. I love
college football. Well, I like the fall because if you go to the to the tailgate and you don't have to go to the game and just be a fan. It's it's got a nice atmosphere, the weather's fantastic, and Tucson you can mingle with your friends and it's a joy to be here. You know, October and here, November? Here, come on, where are you gonna beat it at? You can't but not so much where live or die with anything anymore? Yeah, I'm beyond that, but but you
still have fun with it? Oh yeah yeah? Yeah, funding a weird way funding a Wow. That was strange because I don't follow the Cowboys anywhere. They're much They're not even good No, no, you okay? As a season college football, football, basketball, baseball or are they all kind of no? College college football college bas well obviously just because there's so many good games to watch. Yeah yeah, And but I also like, like I said yesterday about travel or day before I traveled out, I mean I
traveled out. But basketball is there's something special about it, especially when like the big guys lose because you don't expect them to lose and it happens all right, so then there's probably an obvious question. Then NC double a tournament over all season, it's yeah, yeah, because yeah, because when I covered them and you covered them, we went it was Hawaii, New Mexico Bowl, things like that. I didn't get the flavor of a huge bowl.
I went through the festival ninety three. Yeah, okay, you know you see I covered the the I think it was the eighty nine It was the ball the National Championship between Notre Dame and West Virginia, and they sent me to cover that. It was a spectacle. It was cool. Course, yeah, it was cool. And actually that it would have been it
would have been the eighty nine game. It was after the eighty eight season, And actually I thought it was very cool that I went to the final four and eighty eight and then covered the National Championship football game, you know, basically the same calendar year. And that was really good that she was kind of your prized that you actually actually actually framed my my press passes from
from those two I made a little frames. Have all those. I know how it is now, but it used to be in my office when I had an office, Like no, I have all those. I have all those I have all those framed, those big ones, like the final fours and things like that. Yeah. Yeah, I think just like when we were telling Jason, it's good to be that way, but you can have to be you know, well you're the same kind of fan as him, right, You're you're not. You don't have like favorite teams and stuff like
that. Yeah, but what do you look forward to? Think I'm more excited than Steve, Like you don't see that enthused about all the different seasons about beginning. But for me, I'm really really excited for like for basketball, football, college and national just because I haven't had it for so long. So I've been keeping track of like like preseason football, like no one really watched about watching every game. Well, what we're just because there's a
lot of like new young talent coming into the NFL. A lot of the older guys are retiring and moving on. So I think it's kind of exciting to his new generation, you know, athletes in the NFL. The sub I think in the track of that so interesting. Yeah, I don't. I don't because to me it means nothing. Yeah yeah, if the regular season means not much, I mean yeah, yeah, and if I think if Arizona had more players in the NFL, I might be more interested because
in the NBA, I did. I followed Golden State Warriors because you know, obviously Steve Steven and maybe Andrea Little now uh, not much because he was hurt a lot of the time and he's obviously a great player. But but we don't know these dudes. Yeah, you know, Jake, We don't know these dudes, not like we knew in Luke's time because we spent time with him. In Miller's time, we knew Aaron Gordon. He was
here for like a cup of coffee. Yeah, all these guys were here for a cup of coffee, and we didn't get to Jim McConnell was probably the brightest moment for us, right, yeah, Jay, because he spent three years here. He was personable, we could write stories on. He was fun, he was cool. But everybody else not so much. Even the shimmy in and out and now with Tommy it's it's still too fresh.
It's still too they were here for a day or two, right, So you feel like you kind of need that personal connection very much players very much. So okay, I get that. Yeah, Yeah, And that's not our purpose, but it's better to have that for sure. Yeah, for sure, Yeah, Okay, I get that, And I mean, are you excited for college football season? Yea, beyond the fact that you're gonna be covering, yeah, I mean, you know, covering the team.
I'm really interested to just see how the defense looks, how they're the guys have been developing, how they actually look against actual you know, offenses, because that was the weakest point of the team after like last year. So I kind of want to see. I think got to take the next step and kind of really keep pace with our offense because I feel like our offense is going to go on the better you know units you know in college football.
So I feel like if they can kind of just keep you know, kind of even a keyo with them, or keep pays with them, kind of you know, keep teams below thirty points per game, I think our offense will be able to win most of these games on the schedule. So it's okay, Okay, you're a student yeah, of the U of A. This is your school. We've asked this of no go go because where you're going kind of yeah, okay, you're a student of school, are
you rooting for them. Yeah, I'm rooting for them inside. Where what do you mean, like, well, because you can because I can't. You can't. You can't because you're a student, but you're not really supposed to. Yeah, my question was kind of like that, but different. Do you notice your peers who are rooting for them and very apparent that they're rooting for them? No, how long have you been in the business here
this year, second or third year? This is like my second year yet, And have you noticed that where they're kind of hoping that they do well because it's their school. Yeah, I mean, but like they don't really like it's not like die hard like over cheers. I mean, they hope they do well, but because we haven't done for so long, the kind of like whatever happens happens, right, But since I'm covering the team, not gonna kind of see guys progressing and one kind of just have more faith,
I guess than they do. But your but your peers and how they say you don't see them before it's obviously you know, okay of cool Yeah, yeah, not not really you know, yeah, Okay, that's where you can yeah yeah, And and look and we've we've talked about this before too. I was rooting for Arizona because I wanted to carve you know, cover good team, cover a good team, and and and and you know, go to the final four, go to a bowl game or whatever,
but not you know, with my arms raised in the press box. I've seen guys cheer under the under the table. Yeah, I've seen yeah, oh yeah, you do one of the first what's one of the first warnings, Daniel says, no cheering in the press box. Cheering and you'll hear it. Yeah, yeah, sure, and you'll hear it. Yeah. Yeah. That's when they wake me up and say, what does this happen? Oh my gosh, But that's why we yeah, you know, okay, it's very apparent. It's no shame. It is what it is.
Yeah, for sure. And like Jay says, you know, it's better to be coming a winning team. It's way more fun, for sure. Locker rooms and stuff like that are way more fun. Yeah. Now we'll see if he has a winning, winning team. Yeah, we'll see, which, of course would be fine. If there's six and six or seven to five, yea, whether it is okay, cool, that's not just you know, just curious to what the approach is anymore, you know, because I know we again we're Steve and I are kind of the purest in
the room. You know, we kind of like to don't cheer, don't you know stuff. But and you you know, but you can't help be connected when you're the student, you know, at the student paper. Yeah for sure. Yeah, there's only if you find something out that's bad news for the for the for the team, right, you're gonna go, You're gonna follow that up. Of course, I got do my job at the end of the day, and so I'll have to do. But I always I want them to succeed and do well. But you know, I kind
of how to like separate that. So yeah, pretty cool. We feel good about you now, not that we didn't feel good about you before. I didn't know. We feel good about you, all right, Thanks, good first hour. All right, all right, Jason Man, last day, holy cow, last breaking news. Yeah, last breaking news for Jason coming right up, So stick around.
