Steve Rivera and jakeen Somns they have their eye on the ball on Tucson sports station Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. They welcome back to trying about here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve, He's Jake, and Jay has some breaking news. That's he who was right, that's good took news on fourteen fifteen. Okay, Steve, breaking news. I went to the heart doctor today and they said I have one and it's not black. And your kids were
saying, really, I never knew. Good to hear that. Good to hear just regular check up, nothing nothing going on, just regular checkup. And that's what the kids said, going on exactly, so you know, and still couldn't continue to look for breaking news. Just says to finish our little league conversation. Just came across this, uh, this clip of the
of a regional pencil against against Washington DC. Pennsylvania was getting no hit in the bottom of the seventh and walk off homer to win the game and get to the Little League. It's one of the games I was watching today before the ship, just right before two o'clock. He was coming on, how cool is that? I would have been? They had a guy. They had two players on second and third bottom of six no hits and one out
and they and the other team, DC survived it. I think it would have been one of the only times ever a team wins being no hit, but they eventually won the next inning. Yeah. We talked earlier this week about Kevin Brown, the announcer for the Orioles who got kicked off the air. Yeah, that's ended for for pointing out that the Orioles hadn't beaten the Mari the Raising about ten years. And he's back on the mic tonight him.
He had a statement, he said everything was mischaracterized and people are saying it sounds like a hostage tape to me, something that he might have said with a gun to his head or a proverbial gun to his head. Nobody, nobody really had a gun do it. Everybody loves jobs, exactly exactly. Let's see. Uh, bad sad news for Arizona Basket women's basketball Montaya. Gosh darned, I had her name here, Montya do freshman coming in having surgery and is out for the year. She's a let's see, just
says undergo surgery. Uh. This said while the program did not elaborate on the type of injury or surgery. She was spotted outside McHale with a black brace on her left leg earlier this week and had covered her entire leg from ty to ankle. So I don't know if it's you know, is it achilles, is it a knee or whatever. But she was supposed to be a big piece of what they were doing this year and she is now out, Okay, highly unfortunately staying on college on college basketball. Cooper Flag high
school kid. I'm not even sure where I think. I want to say Minnesota. Yeah, he's the next great recruit coming out. He has decided to reclassify and uh, he's going into the twenty twenty four recruiting class. He was playing somebody at a camp of week a week or so go and showed him up. It was an m NBA guy and a pretty good NBA guy, and they were giving the NBA guy crap because this kid was pretty
fantastic. Yeah, so he's he's coming out so he can go play uh college basketball a year early and theoretically get himself into the into the NBA. Joe Burrow there's a video of him running on the field, running some sprints, throwing a football. They say he's looking pretty good, and so, you know a lot of people are saying, oh, this could be you know, it's an achilles. It's gonna bother him his entire year. And there's already some some feeling that he's gonna be just fine, just fine.
Sad news. Sean Dakins, remember that name guy California, California passed away recently. So he's like fifty seven, fifty six. He was fifty two fifty two, Okay, fifty two years old, played at Cal he was Uh, he's well, he's in the Athletic Hall of Fame. Uh, you know, receiver, he's the it's all time leader and career and single season touchdown catches. Uh, fifty two years old. Man, didn't he he died either. I don't think it's totally no. It doesn't say,
it doesn't say. So that's a very sad thing. Let's see what else. AP Top twenty five comes out on Monday. I'm sure it's gonna look a lot like the coaches poll. I'm guessing. I don't know what you think. Here. Here's an interesting thing. I don't know if there's more for a discussion or breaking news. But Max Olsen from the Athletic UH wrote
wrote an article and posted a chart. But it says that during the twenty twenty two twenty twenty three transfer portal Psyche, twenty percent of all FBS scholarship players transferred, so that when we're talking one out of five players, they didn't have scholarship players and FBS transferred during the twenty twenty two twenty percent of the twenty three transferred portal of cycle. I wonder how many people got left in the dirt or dust whatever, right, because you know, you have
thousands of them in there and then eventually don't find homes. Right. You know, sometimes the grass more, sometimes the grass is greener than you realize. Oh no, the grass isn't greener, or no one wants me. What am I gonna do? Right? But yeah, So apparently discussions are now off for cal and UH and Stanford to go to the ACC. They didn't they didn't have the UH there weren't going to have the votes for that, didn't they have? There was just some more stuff today, right,
some more meetings today? Is that from last night or today today? Today? Yeah? I think they were gonna have some more meetings. So now it's call and Stown for talking to the AAC. You know, the Americans play the conference and they're also obviously in discussions with the Mountain West. I mean, Mountain West makes all the sense, right sure, and at those four teams in the Mountain West, you got sixteen teams, Go get a TV and it'll it'll bring up the profile of the mount West West. Certainly
couldn't hurt. Yeah, yeah, you know. Gloria Navarrez is the athlete as the commissioner, widely considered very sharp person, can run circles around the most recent Pack twelve commissioners. She's in charge of it. She listened to her on I met her. She was at the PAC twelve when I was working the China Games. Really sharp, sharp person. She was a college basketball player and I heard her on a on an episode of the Womner of
podcast Really smartly. So let me ask you, because this has been a criticism too, of all the things that went wrong, what's his name? Learry Scott was not a it's not a college dude, right, came from the Tennis World, Women's Tennis World. Uh, and we saw what happened.
Was not a college you think there was an issue too. Well, there's a lot there's a lot of people saying that you had this guy who wasn't in the college game, and you hired him, you fired him, he basically did a crappy job, and then you ain't got another guy kind of like him. But they all were you thinking? And the presidents did this? Right? The president? Well, how did they get their job? Because they're academics. They're running universities, they're not running athletic academic program
So that's a So that's a thing, you know. John John Wilmer has written an interesting column again talking about the thirty million dollars deal that they had with the ESPN, The why not. Surprisingly, the Washington State Athletic director of very uh outspoken about what what happened, talking about the fifty million that the pact twelve one, and he said two or three schools were interested in that number. The discussions were that we really had to close the gap on
the big ten. The commissioner went off with those us which were unrealistic for sure. Yeah, and then there was a source that said they couldn't save those guys from themselves. The people with expertise were telling them there was a path to a deal in the thirty millions, but not the fifty. Well, it's on what's the what's the phrase? The blood is on their hands. Yeah, we're failing to do this. Yeah, and they killed the
conference. Yeah, they killed a historic athletic conference. I still think that eventually, and not going by your theory, but somehow that they'll eventually circle back everything. Well maybe I hope so the NBA Hall of Fame. But but but then you're gonna say, I really missed chances. I really, I really miss I really missed that competition that we got to do. Guys, you're never picking everybody happy. NBA put six people in the NBA Hall
of Fame tomorrow, Uh, starting with the coach, Greg Popovich. Spurs coach is still the coach, Becky Hammond uh playing in the NBA and she's also I believe a coach, Dark Navitsky Uh, Dwayne Wade, and Tony Parker. It's a great group. It's a grit group. In fact, Micky Hammond is the coach of the Las Vegas bas and she coached with Papovich. She's gonna she's gonna be a coach and she's been she's been an assistant. Yeah though, right for Papovich for a long time. Yeah, yeah,
no, very good coach. She'll probably be the first female in the NBA. He was a head coach of the head coach. Yeah, so those six go in tomorrow. You can watch that on the NBA TV channel. Happy birthday too, who remember you had to hang over last time at this time? Didn't for practice the day after twenty first birthday? Now twenty two years old day, Delora. I'm thinking he's practice today. So well, see if he's there at the scrimmage tomorrow, right, I'm sure you'll
be there. Uh, let's see. Uh. Well, as mentioned, the Cardinals season game tonight at seven o'clock they take on Denver. Uh. The pregame show comes on right after our show here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. They you can listen to the game here as well. Uh, Kyler Murray won't be won't be on the field. Starting quarterbacks for the game will be Russell Wilson and Colt McCoy for the Cards. Did you see the catch by Cheez Davis yesterday? Yes, I guess. Unbelievable cat two man cat,
Yeah, crazy. The dude's got a great future, crazy crazy crazy. Yeah, he's well, yeah, we will see him in the major leagues at some point. Uh, just came across the guy. They just don't learn. Man. This guy put a Detroit Lions Super Bowl Champions twenty twenty four tattoo on his left arm. And it's a big tattoo. It goes from the shoulder to the album sir, could you give me a disc on that? And it isn't easy to remove at the end of the season.
It's a I'm looking at it now. It's it's the it's the Lombardi Trophy with the Lion's logo over it. It's a Super Bowl Champs twenty twenty four group on I was talking to some people. He says, I want to get this. I want they want to get a tattoo, blah blah blah. And it says you're gonna have some regrets for that. Regrets. Have you seen that with this? Spells it wrong? I would never do
that. I would never do that. Oh hey, going back to this conversation on the on the a SEC and the the cal and Stanford Nicole Nicole Arbach from there from the Athletic reporting that it was Florida State, Clemson, North Carolina and North Carolina State that were opposed to taking call and Stanford and
one of those would have to flip because you need twelve votes. And North Nord of Dames got a vote in this, but they support it, so they recommended it, didn't they Yeah, they yeah, Notre Dame wants Stanford didn't the league. Yeah, I said, how can we let it? Unbelievable waving the wind out? Here's this. There's academic great place, but athletically is a great place. And they're just in the wind. They're just
in the wind, both of them. Yeah, Okay, I'm not sure cares about sports they're but they're a great academic you know, they're one of the top academies. Like I said yesterday, I saw Jesus there a few times on telegraph. Yeah, he's wandering around it. He's got he's got a place right there on the sidewalk. And Michael leb wrote a column that I agree with, and I talked about this a little bit, saying that Michael Wiley man being very highly underrated. Uh this year he thinks, you
know, he was left off the the y'all pac twelve list. He was an honorable mention. Athlons didn't even have him as one of the top six running backs in the league. And Michael as as do. I think he's gonna be key, and he's gonna be really, really damn good. You know, he came on strong at the end of last year, and I think he's the guy, and they think I think people are gonna be surprised. I'm good he turns out. Yeah, yeah, if it does stay
healthy, does stay healthy exactly, it's all he got, Steve. Okay, I just had the Chase Davis catch. I don't think anything else is going on. Yeah, so again, just reminder Cardinal's preseason after right after well, I'm sure that a year for this that the Diamondbacks with their little no big downfall, now want the manager of the fans want the manager. They wanted him, but he was manager of the year before the All Star break. Now they need to fire it. But that's how it goes.
Man, that's a tough job. It's truss. That's what do you get paid the big bucks exactly exactly. Oh here I just saw this. I didn't know that Stanford. Steve was my buddy who helps with my bets. He had done the show with the Bear. He had done the podcast with Bear where I got all my gambling. Did the podcast, Oh, he did podcast The Bear's gone over to you Fox. So Stanford Steve is actually gonna do betting stuff on game day because he's the ESPN guy and he does.
He does the Scott fan Pelt, he and Scott van Palter budds and he does the Sports Center show with Scott van Pelt. So I don't know if I can wait to Saturday morning so to get my gambling in folk Steve for my pick, man, I gotta you know, we gotta do our Friday football Friday football pick, or maybe you just come up to him. We know that's doesn't work very well. It never has. That's what he
ever had. That's the way with Jack said yesterday that you agreed with him when the Washington pick is is, Well, it was just a confirmation for both of you. So that's just how it is. I mean, he needs confirmation. All right, Jake Fisher is gonna come on, We'll talk about the latest stuff going on and get his op. Jake was not a little league baseball kid, right, Oh he might have been. He might have been because it might have been about some of that put a little basketball
to a think. I know, I know he was big on the basketball side of it. But we'll we'll find out if he plays a little league. So all right, we'll be right back to Jake Fisher piping in on a Friday afternoon the way he always does, and we'll we'll keep it going. We'll be right back. Steve Ravera and Jakenzalez they have their Eye on the ball on two Psalms Sports six yep, Fox Sports fourteen fifty extreamy Live. I mean I already a wire. Hey, welcome
back to On on the Ball here on Fox Sports two un fifty. I'm Steve, He's Jake. Now we get our Friday guest, Jake Fisher, former UVA football player Jakey. I'm good. It's great to talk with you guys like, you know, like we do every Friday. I'm also I appreciate you guys having me on again. So let me ask you, Jake. The team is week one, right, pretty much week one or a little over a week practicing. Does it become tedious or you know, you
have three weeks before the first game. What happens after week one when you're kind of just out there in the heat, Well, the first couple of weeks, they're gonna grind you a little bit. And so obviously the first fifteen crowd practices are so are gonna be tough. You know, they might go a little bit further than that. It seems like they have a lot of guys on the offensive side of the ball that know what they're doing,
so they might take a little bit more of a a breather. But you know, after you get those first two two and a half weeks and then you kind of set your focus to your first game and you start kind of going through their stuff. But normally, the first half, I would say,
the first fifteen to twenty practices are normally the toughest. Is it Is it because you're doing a lot of the same stuff over and over again, your fundamentals and stuff or what, Well, what makes it such a grind or just that you're not used to the constant you know, every day of it. Well, no, it's obviously a grind, but you just get tired of hitting people on your own team. You want to hit someone with
a different colored jersey. So it just gets a little you know, it gets a little tiresome, and you know, you got some you know, some bruises, and you know, might pull a couple of things. Who knows, you might get banged up a little bit. And but you know, if you're going against a different team, a lot of those injuries are a lot of those nagging injuries kind to go away because you know you're going
to get to hit somebody else. How do you keep up with you know, things like you know, getting sleep and the treatments and all that kind of stuff. I mean, because they're throwing a lot at you. It sounds like Plus said, there's some you don't have school, so we can throw as much at you as we want. Yeah, and this is the other thing. If you want to get on the field, you can't stay banged up. So you're gonna be in there the entire time. They have
a regiment for you already worked up. You know, if something hurts, they're gonna basically gets you in there and make you go in there and get worked on. So it's not like it's something that's hard to do. Yeah, it's it's time consuming, But as long as you know you're in the right place and you're doing what you need to do, you know, and you're not getting injured, then you're gonna be able to go out perform and hopefully play okay and get at this time. Is it usually where the offense
is better than the defense, or defense better than the offense. It really just depends. Since we have a lot of guys coming back that played a lot last year on the offensive side of the ball, I can see the offense being a little bit further along because you don't have to you know, you don't have to basically we start from scratch with defense. I know it's a year two, but a lot of those guys didn't play a lot last year. So with a lot of the guys coming in that have played ball
elsewhere, they haven't played in the system. So I can see the offense getting out so a stronger start than the defense, and then they should get a little bit more even towards the end of camp with us my last couple of years, because we had a lot of guys come back, but we had new installments, you know, offense, just because we had a lot of really good athletes on that side of the ball, they were further ahead.
And then when we started you know spring ball, or not spring ball, but cam going into my senior year because we had a lot of defensive guys coming back. We started out, you know, basically playing better than the offense, and then we go back and forth. Obviously it's competitiveility practice. Sorry sorry, I mean you cough in your ear on that one. Okay, you you had you had, you know, preseason camps with two different coaches. Who first of all, which one was harder? And why
was one different from the other. What were the big differences? Stops was much harder. The only reason was because we were in the dorms and it literally was from like five am to like eight thirty pm, so it was all day. I mean, you didn't have a lot of free time, and it was just I mean after the first week, you're like, when
the hell can I go home? When it comes to rich rod you know, we would get to sleep in our own beds, and you know, we would go in and when we go in, it would be around ten or eleven, and then it was just five six hours of just straight nothing
but football, and then we get to go home again. So you know, obviously we run a little bit more during rich Rods, but I mean just being in the same place, around the exact same people all hours of the day and not having any available free time and being in the dorm. That sucks. Re fresh for Mary. Did you go to Did you go to Camp Coach Cheese? Yeah? Oh no, no, no, not Coach Cheese. We went down the fair of this most of the time out
Gayle, I think we did all five years. Oh really, because they had the military enthusiast or they did some military stuff right with the army. Yeah, yeah, they did some like motivational some yeah. Yeah, yeah. But you weren't in Douglas at Camp Chief. Okay, no, we didn't go to Douglas. All right, let me ask you something. It might be a dumb question, but uh, and I know you were a good student. How difficult is it to be a student athlete? That's a.
That's a. It's difficult, especially in season. You know, when you're out of season, especially when I was in the Business college, you would you wouldn't have any classes on Friday, you know, you might have an early whist and then the rest of the weekend is nothing. But during uh, during football season, obviously you're gonna be doing a lot more. You're gonna have practice obviously, you know you're still gonna have training cable.
You're still gonna have a whipping, but you're gonna have a lot more film. Now you're gonna have individual film. You know, if you didn't have a great practice, you're gonna have a lot more treatment because you're getting banged up every day. And then you know you have to do between the fifteen to eighteen credits or whatever it is. So it's not just a mental tool, it's the physical tool. And when I talk to a lot of my buddies that have jobs seen while they were in college, I said, the
only difference is that good job. You're not getting hit by a three hundred and fifteen pound guy every single time. It's just a little bit different. It's it's taxing on the body, on the mind, and uh but yeah, it's all worth it. Okay, let me if it's worth it. So you have a little little Jake junior playing football and he's pretty good. You do you beg him to play college football? Yeah, but I'm just not gonna have him playing tack will probably he's saying it's in high school.
I want him to get you know, I want him to develop a little bit. I don't want him to have a few years on his body before he absolutely means too. All Right, I'm gonna ask you because it's going back to the academic piece of this, because I think and I don't know if you were there, I don't think. I think it's before you were
there. A guy named Daryl Brooks who works in the athlete or I don't know if he still works in that, but yeah, they had a run of guys that were academically ineligible at the start of a season, Darel Brooks, So I think it was apparently a pretty good student. He was quoted in the papers saying, you almost have to try to be ineligible because of how much they watch you, they tutor you, the resources that you have. Said, if you're ineligible, it's because you almost tried to be ineligible.
Do you agree with that? Yeah, I do. As long as you put in the effort, you're never going to be eligible. And just the fact the resources that they have there. There was only like two classes. I think I needed, you know, an actual tutor, and it was after the guy with the Business college. After I graduated from high school, I didn't take CALC and for one of my classes I needed to have
CALC one and some other higher mass deal. So I had to take both of those during one summer and that was absolutely hell because I had to go back five years and we learned precals and do all that stuff. Even so, but I mean, you're gonna have a tutor there. I had a tutor that would sit with me, you know, every day, you know, during a summer Jordan summer school course, and I mean he'd be there three four hours with me every single day. So you have all the resources
that you need. Okay, super super So okay. So we're three weeks away from from the season. Uh, your opinion still seven eight games? Uh, you know you're hearing anything different. We're starting to get preseason previews, those kinds of things. Still standing Pad on your call. Yeah, I'm still thinking that we're gonna win seven and then we get to a bowl game. We're gonna have We're gonna get over our bowl hangover. I guess it's the best way to put it. Still hearing nothing but great things about
the receivers. Obviously, one of the top tip ends of the pack is coming back, you know, returning quarterbacks second year in the system, which is awesome. You have what looks like two or three future to you know, day one or day two offensive linemen, and then as long as the defensive A lot of these new spaces, you know, can cause more turnovers and maybe you know, provide a little bit more resistance. I don't see a reason why we can't take five wins to seven or eight. So I'm
sticking in my position. As long as there's no major injuries, I think we're gonna be good. And I think a team max is gonna leave the pack in touchdown cashes, and I think Coln might leave the pack in reception and maybe even be up there in yards. We have about six minutes, so let's go through the schedule and because we have a couple of games that we wanted to talk about because that they need to win to get to seven or six. Yeah, uh, and we'll go. Let's go real quick
through the individual games. Win. Okay, Mississippi State, you know, but at Mississippi State. And this is the thing, like this past year when we weren't ready for a big, physical team like that, I think we come back. JETI says, let's go get them back, and then we go, you know, to Mississippi State and win. I don't think it's gonna be a blowout. I just think we're gonna win and that to
get to seven or eight. That's probably one of the games that if they win this game, if they win that game, they're gonna get to six p seven for sure. Seven. Okay, so then you tap you win, right, every agree? So you're three and you're three, and then you go you open the league leagues, uh and go to Stanford. Go to Stanford at the wour all right, Washington here, Washington, that's gonna be tough. I think we keep it closer than people expect. I don't
expect we win that game to usc that one. I'm just because I'm gonna go you know, I'm gonna go head overheard on this one. I don't think we're winning that one either. Okay, all right, then stay on the road going to Washington State. When see that's that's the game. That's there's two games that we think that's a key one. And then these three games actually Washington State, then Oregon State comes here and they they've proven over
the last couple of years that they got their stuff together. I just don't trust their new quarterback. Yeah, I know he was supposed to be all world, but you know, he didn't really live up to the you know, the hype. But their offensive line is gonna be freaking awesome again under the hall check. And uh they might have the best running back in the
league too. Yeah, let's let's skip that when I come back. Okay, Okay, we're four and two, we're four two, Okay, four two, okay, four two, but on a on a on a two game losing streak, all right, Uh no, then you know you put Washington so five and two, okay, five and two, five and two, Uh, UCLA here, they're gonna have a freshman quarterback. They're gonna want revenge, but I think we'll beat them. Okay, six and two
at Colorado when seven and two two got your seven? Utah here loss seven to three at a s U, Okay, that's a w. And we're gonna lose the Oregon State so we might get your state. You're saying, you're going yeah. So, originally I was thinking the three games Mississippi State, Washington State, and Oregon State. I was thinking that we had to win one of those, and that's looking like as long as we keep that constant, it looks like if we win just one of those three, we're
gonna be at seven and they go to a bowl game. All right, Yeah, well, I have never accused you of not being a fan friendly or a program. I just like to take people at their best, you know. Yeah, But you know what, here's the thing, Jake, and this is this is what I love about it is that we're not sitting here going loss loss, loss, loss, Okay, Colorado win loss, loss, loss. You know. I mean, I like the fact that you had to think about USC, right, you had to think a little
bit about Washington. Now you didn't think much about Utah. And I kind of agree with that. But you know that you can't even think that they
might even might have a chance to win those games. My thing is, if we get a couple of those guys back, you know, for their third fourth season, and they're in you know there, well, I'm we're in year four with jet fishing these guys, then I might say, hey, we can keep it close or competitive with like a Utah is they have like everyone basically does their job on every single play, almost down to a
tea. They might not have the same athletes and stuff as an FC or an Oregan, but at the same time, It's like, you know, they have a shot against anybody they play, it doesn't matter who it is. So when it comes to see you know, sometimes they show up and they're just so lazy that they can get beat with the revenge factor there. You know, sometimes I'm like, ah, I want to give it to them. The same thing with Washington. The only thing I'm happy about is
we got Washington at home. I think that if they come out firing on all cylinders, you know, they have a chance. But sc especially with that monster, they have that quote pack there, and just because they always have, you know, the best athletes in the conference, they stuff to pick on that one. I totally agree with you. You see against as they always played down they always they have. So I don't know. Eight wins, Jake, seven wins, okay, and I'll leave you alone.
I'm writing the Jake train, Jake just taking You're going to get more. We need to get more of your listeners on that track, because as long as that defense provides some resistance against some turnovers, with the guys that we have coming back, you know, I mean we have three or four awesome red zone threats, you know, So I don't think we're going to be leaving the red zone without scoring touchdowns, and I'm insanely high schools. I'm
kind of happy about that. So when you're watching games, and I know you're an intense dude, do you watch Black last year? How did you watch Arizona's defense? Were you frustrated a lot or throwing stuff at the tv? How was your demeanor? Oh, I can't watch the game with other
people. I just can't do that. I'm the one that will throw a remote on the one that'll basically go on a five minute ran about how crappy the pack twelve rests were every single damn game, you know, even if it was even if it wasn't our fault, but you know, they're getting held on the other side of the screen. It's like, you guys call this crap whenever we do it. So, you know, if I show a little you know, poise, yeah, I just I can't do that.
My wife doesn't go in the room when the games on. She kind of rolls her eyes to get stuff off the couch and walked out of the house. Uh. You know, whenever we have people over and I say, hey, the game's on, They're like, yeah, we're gonna go do something else. And thankfully because it was Pac twelve. You know, if we go out to eat and go out to a barn or go over to somebody else's house and he doesn't have to pass fill network, I don't have to worry about it, you know what I mean? So yeah,
I stop to watching with people. Okay, well maybe this year you might be a little bit more calm, but we'll see. Let's say, at least call him for more games. There you go, Okay, that's probably right. Hey, Jake, thanks so much, man, Thank you guys people Jake, for sure, we forget Jake. You still there. They know where to find him. He's all over the place. You can go. But he's never without an opinion, and we love I love him for that, you know when he was doing our show with the sports guys. But but he's a little too overzealous for me. You know. Look, he's he's he's a he's an optimistic Arizona fan. I can know a bunch of other guys who would saying eight four as well. I'm still I'm still in the sixth six. And if they hit one of those, like you said, they hit Mississippi State one of those. Now you're talking a little
check you check on you checked recently about the over under. Right, let's come back and still five? Still five? I think, I think, I think that's skeezy money too. I just do. Yeah, it's it's a drop from five and a half. But I got it at well, I got it at five, but it was five and a half. But it's five. It's been five for a while. Okay, somebody somewhere had at four and a half for a while. I don't know where one at the other betting site. All right, we'll be right back and we'll close

This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera and Jacob Salas on Fox Sports fourteen FI Games. Hey, welcome back to on the Ball here on Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. I'm Steve Rivera, You're Jake gonna call I'm gonna call hw You're on the and I on the Ball. Yeah, Trob wanted to call in and say that I agree with Jake. I think we're gonna
win seven or eight games this year. And uh, I think with I worked more in my head a lot of times with the OVA, but I can see seven or eight wins this year, which are the key games that you gotta win. It can't blow any of the early games, that's for sure, they can't. I think they can beat I think we can beat Oregon State. I know they always have our number, but I think we can win that game. And uh, we can't blow games like at Colorado or anything like that, or Stanford. I don't know. It just they
just gotta be up for every single game and not have a letdown. And I just think they're all important. And Washington State, like you guys said, that's a tough one to pick because the Cougar usually have been pretty good lately and hand it's up there. Yeah. And then just a comment on Lavello, that guy they were winning in spite of Tory Lavello in the first half of the season. That guy looks like he's a sleep during every single game. He and then he made a comment about three or four weeks ago
that he doesn't have a closer because he doesn't use a closer. He just
goes with whatever whoever is right for the situation. Or you look at all the winning teams in baseball, they usually have a pretty good closure to lockdown the game because I don't know how many games they've brought in grubs like McGuff and even what's his name with the guy that they sent back to Milwaukee Shape and those guys and then Hayes and can't they can't get a pitching staff to save their lives in there, and I think Hayton hand Lavello will have to
go to turn that program around. Well, they certainly aren't happy up there with the way they got gone and how they're just getting rolled now they're they're fading fast. Well you saw you were there, You were there. There was it any attendance? Yeah, yeah, Well that's the other thing. You know. The Dodgers are in town right, usually draws a big crowd, and there was maybe twenty five they're at the most, and about twenty thousand of them had Dodger heads on. They did. I was one of
them. Yeah, I think to start fire, Eason has to go because that guy hasn't done anything since he's been a general manager. They haven't gotten any better in the bullpen. I don't know. They had maybe two pitchers that can pitch. Gallen and and uh but he sucked lately too, and uh barall Kelly's hurt again, I guess. But I appreciate your guys show, and hopefully we can win May nine games this year. All right, man, I love you, I love you. Thanks thanks for calling.
We do appreciate it. Thank you. Take the guys have a good weekend. Appreciate it. I think it is hard to a lot stronger than his head. But you know what is Steve. I love the optimism. I love I love the fact that people are talking like that. It hasn't this good since someone first year. And then we know how that to be. I mean, how many games do we go to? We just covered our eyes. We went into the statem and you know, even even you know
a Jed fishes first year, Oh we thought they were more competitive. They were still losing, but you know in some games there were some games were bad. They lost bad. So no, I like it. I like it a lot. No, that's the one thing that they're buying into the system, buying into for Jed. Uh good good for that, good, good for good for everyone. Yeah. So I know, man, the Mississippi State game will tell us a lot. You know, they can keep that close even you know, you have a chance to win in the fourth
quarter or something like that. Who we placed leech? Was it? Somebody was defensive coordinator? Okay, yeah, it was this defensive coordinator. So there's a question, you know, because they've changed up their offense. You know, they got that that quarterback that killed Arizona last year. He's back, but he's got a different had some good receivers too. I don't know if they were good. They were, you know, they were good. Arizona was outmatched in that game. They were just more physical. The guy
the quarterback was really poised. If you remember, I think they played North Dakota State last year, right, Yes, that was a game that they that was a difficult game and that kind of not saved their season, but to me kind of did. It was a game that win and it gave him the belief. Right and even though you know they talked about North Dakota State, you know, well, they're better than a lot a lot of
Power five teams. So that was a hard game for them to win and the fact that they did win that because that was a very key game that they needed that game. And how much how much do fans feel better about five and seven than four and eight without questions? Five and seven you just missed a bowl game, you know, if you're played better against it, and you said that. They've said this on this show at number of times. A couple of plays here and there, play here, play there,
whereas if you're four and eight, you weren't close. Yeah. Right, it's a big difference. It's a huge Yeah. Yeah, you're different. Yeah, because because that's what we're reaching for when we're at Arizona right now. Yeah, if you guys going to call in, we got about seven minutes, eight minutes, give us a quick call before we end the week with the shows. As we get closer to you, a football love of the fact that we're talking about football. High school football comes up too.
We'll have some coaches with that. We'll start getting some coaches in and then you have some some the minor sports. I has a new coach, right right, I think so, because Malcolm Nelson filled in last year the Sugar Skulls assistant and then they hired a new coach. I heard him on one of the stations. He sounded really you know, positive. Really, he's already been on sounding really good. So again we'll get you know, we'll start leaning towards that as well. But you know, it's it's it's football
time, man, you can you can feel it. Three weeks until Arizona's on the field, two weeks until there's some college football this week zero zero. In fact, new school State plays. Don Brown goes to cruises to play them. Oh man, are you gonna no, god, no, what about Steve? What kind of a I are you that a good one? That a good one. I'm not triving four hours to see that game. We should get done on before. Oh yeah, that'd be funny. Before that be good, be good. We gotta get let's try let's let's
try that. Uh, and we'll try to get well. YouTube plays when they play here, YouTube plays are right, we'll go Dana we had before. We'll get him again. He's been on the show. Yeah, they meant they were. They were pretty good last year. I recall, right, better than for you tap. They were very good. Yeah, good
comparatively. So let's say I'm trying to look at the week zero schedule on Saturday the twenty six, you've got Navy and Order Dame or the game that's in uh in Ireland, which which should be a fun game, Dan Patrick, and excuse me, we're gonna we're gonna go uh Rich Rod opens the season on week week zero against you tap okay, both those guys on. Oh yeah, well I've tried. I've tried a couple of times. He must not like you anymore. You're right, you you masks in New Mexico
State. You've got Ohio and San Diego State. Uh so have you ever sends me a note to high school? Football starts next Friday, Next Friday. It's not high school? The coaches thing, don't they have the tip off? The was the Mirana is the Mirana Cell Point or Miranda's Branda's cdo Miranda? Somebody send us a note Mirana and somebody is a huge game coming right out of the box that we said we were going to go to. And I think it's Miranda and Cell Point. Oh that's right. We had
the coaches on before we both go see go see the kids play? Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, maybe maybe we got to make it a point to go to what day is that? What day is that? Next Friday? Next Friday, next Friday? Week from too much today? We from today? Okay, that might work. Let me, he says Marana at cell point. Yeah, so that might be good. All right, we'll talk to We'll talk to them. Hawaii plays Vanderbilt, San Jose State USC and then fi U and Louisiana Texas. There you know, seven D one
or FBS games. Yeah, twenty five, twenty five, so in two weeks it's South it's the South point. Two weeks all right, hubs a hubs our new David Kelly permissions. Okay, but we got to make a plan to make a make it a point to get to that game. But then we say week zero, so there'll be some there's some decent games, and then the following Thursday it really gets going. So that'll be fun. We're getting there. Yeah, I want to make to go see the sub
point kids play. The ones who play who committed to right supposed to be pretty damn good. So yeah, you know, let's see what happens over there. But that should be fun. It should be a lot of fun. But you know, again, I just got it's funny because I was listening to Wilmer's podcast and just talk about all the stuff that they missed or that that that the whole realignment they interfered with their families. Yeah, stuff like that, you know, always having to be have your phone at the
ready, taking your computer with you everywhere you went. It was not about he went to a beach somewhere and he had he had his back back with him. There's in case something. Bro Oh, dude, I don't I don't miss those days at all, those days and I don't miss you know, well, my wife, uh my ex wife. Now, didn't we go eat dinner? Hey, what's going on? You know what's going He couldn't eat dinner without people knowing. And it's part of the job. It's
part of the job. Your accept it was part of the time. And then they did too, but you know it's it's you can never get away from it. And some people have a stomach to do it forever, right right, Some people like me say enough, I don't know, of course, and you've probably made the right move, but you had your own issues are probably late night calls, uh pr stuff people, you know, power outages. Sure, so you're working, you know, Barrios is working for
them, all right. He was a formula. So you know, it's you give up one for the other for anything. Yeah, right, Yeah. I was out there, you know, in the storms, wearing a hard hat, you know, stepping over power lines. You know, not really so much of that, just kind of staying over by the truck because I just stayed out of the way. But you know, yeah, I mean that was part of that job. Sure, but I will say I paid a whole lot more to do that than dinners were a little bit better.
Yeah, business trips were good. Yeah, uh, you know, go to New York once in a while and stuff like that. But I had a lot of fun. Okay, So no two about two minutes. It looks like well and the and the show like this. So a lot of preseason games going on tonight. There's a lot of games in you know, in progress right now, some starting quarterbacks, some not. Uh but uh, as we mentioned, the Cardinals get going tonight up but uh, what's the name is it? State Farm Stadium? Now? So still Phoenix,
Phoenix? Did we talk about this last time in the stadium? I think Farm and uh, but they play at seven o'clock. You got the Broncos coming in Russell Wilson. Uh, it's uh. We'll be here on the uh on our station. You can you can get to the pro Well pregame show right after our show and then we'll go into the into the into the game. But kicks off allegedly kicks off at seven o'clock, so it's you know, it's starting. Man, all the all the all the all
the all the teams are playing pretty much everybody. I don't know. I know that you love college football and just all this fanfair to me, though, it's still to me college basketball. When college basketball starts, that's kind of like the best time here, you think so, and then March then March madness. It is State Farm Stadium, no see. To me, the college football season starting, it's like those are the best days. I mean, yes, the individual you know, when you start the NC Double
A basketball tournament, you know, stuff like that. I love it when bowl season starts, even when the smaller ball game I don't get excited for I do because I love watching those games. But college football season I get really juiced uff for that. I mean, i I'm that Thursday night, I mean I'm racing home, you know from the show of the Thursday of the that the season starts. I'm putting games on. I'll be up watching the doubling game with Navy and and UH and notre game on, you know
in two weeks. I love college football starting. That's my that's my favorite. It's around the corner, it is. We're getting right there. It's around the corner. Okay, all right, man again, stick around for Cardinals preseason pregame show coming right up, and then you can catch us uh start back here again on Monday, and we'll be we'll be back with more stuff, trying to get a whole lot of national guest again, get into
the all the stuff that's going on, more previews, less realignment. So be sure to be back next week, listen to the podcast, and then give us a call next week. Flip two, zero, four and six forty. Have a great weekend. Everybody like
