Episode description

The Big Idea: The more I know God’s Word, the more I will recognize His voice in all kinds of places.

James 1:2-11, 21-25

1. Start with Why

Why do you want to hear from God? What are you looking for?

James 1 Suggests Four Good Reasons to Listen to God:

• He is Good and Sovereign

• He is committed to your development and growth

• He is trustworthy. Placing your trust elsewhere makes you unstable

• Life is a temporary assignment

2. Commit to Obedience

2 Timothy 3:14-17

C.S. Lewis said, “Obedience is the key that opens every door.”

3. Get into the Word consistently and systematically

James 1:22-25

A Discovery Bible Study is a fantastic tool for this!

Response:

• I will seek only to know God’s will and find the grace to live it

• I will consistently and systematically read the Word of God

• I will encourage my Oikos with the goodness of God and what I learn

DISCOVERY BIBLE STUDY

► This week's Passage: Deuteronomy 6:4-9

► Connection questions:

1. What are you thankful for?

2. What is a challenge you are facing?

3. How did you do with last week’s “I will” statement?

► Have at least one member of the group restate the passage in their own words

► Individual answers to five questions:

1. What stands out to you?

2. What does this passage tell us about people?

3. What does this passage tell us about God?

4. Based on the passage, what is one thing I could do differently starting now and what would happen if I did? (each person commits to their action for one week using an “I will…” statement)

5. Who are you going to tell about what you discovered? (each person commits to having that conversation before the next meeting)
