Welcome to Through the Thorns. Today's rosary meditation will be the sorrowful mystery of Jesus crowning of thorns. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Close your eyes and imagine being in a dark, dimly lit room. The soldiers are gathered, rough and mocking, and Jesus stands before them, bound and bloodied from the scourging. His face is swollen and his body is trembling from the pain and exhaustion.
There is a chill in the air and you can tangibly feel the stone hard coldness of the soldier's hearts. Evil encompasses the room. You watch as one of the soldiers twists together thorny branches to create a crown of thorns. Sneering, he approaches Jesus and presses it onto his head. The sharp thorns dig into his scalp and blood trickles down his face. Another soldier throws a purple robe over Jesus shoulders and begins to mock him, bowing before him in false homage.
Hail, King of the Jews, they sneer and laugh. You step closer, see Jesus eyes as he endures their ridicule. Despite the pain, There is no hatred in his gaze, only a quiet dignity and love. He looks at you for a moment. What do you see in his eyes? What does he say to you? The soldiers shove him and he stumbles, but does not fall. He carries this humiliation with great grace. What do you want to say to him at this moment? What do you feel as you witness his suffering?
How can you comfort the Lord in this humiliation? Let us pray. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell, and on the third day, he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
