Transcript

Hello and welcome to Wednesday’s Words with English with Languissimo® which will help you improve your vocabulary so that you can communicate better in English.

My name is Vanessa. I’m the founder and CEO of Languissimo®.

Today, I will cover the difference between “less” and “fewer”.

-          “Less” means “moins”. It is used in expressions such as “more or less” (plus ou moins), “less and less” (de moins en moins), “less is more” (moins c’est plus or moins c’est mieux).

-          “Less” also means “moins de/d’”. It is followed by a noun in the singular. For example, “I have less money” (j’ai moins d’argent), “we want less stress” (nous voulons moins de stress).

-          “Fewer” means “moins de/d’”. It is followed by a noun in the plural. For example, “I make fewer mistakes” (je fais moins d’erreurs”), “there are fewer opportunities” (il y a moins d’opportunités).

Some Practice Questions

-          Do you believe that “less is more”?

-          What do you want less of in this world?

-          Do you want fewer meetings at work?

Ta da! That’s it for today! I hope you enjoyed this podcast. Subscribe to English with Languissimo®, practice, take care and have a great Wednesday! Big hugs 😊
