Hello and welcome to Wednesday’s Words with English with Languissimo® which will help you improve your vocabulary so that you can communicate better in English.
My name is Vanessa Rocket. I’m the founder and CEO of Languissimo®.
Today, I will quickly cover the difference between “hungry” and “angry”.
- “To be hungry” means “avoir faim”. Unlike French, the verb “to be” is used so you will say “I am hungry” (j’ai faim), “she is hungry” (elle a faim). The adjective “hungry” doesn’t change in the plural: “he is hungry” (il a faim), “we are hungry” (nous avons faim). Make sure to pronounce the “h” at the beginning: [hungree]. The noun is “hunger”, as in the “hunger games”.
- “To be angry” means “être en colère/être fâché(e)(s). You are usually angry at someone or something. For example, "they’re angry at me” (ils sont en colère après moi). The noun is “anger” as in “anger management” (la gestion de la colère).
In spoken English, there is the word “hangry” which is a mix of “hungry” and “angry”. It is used when you’re angry because you’re hungry.
Some Practice Questions
- Are you hangry or just hungry right now?
- Have you seen the movie “angry birds”?
