Transcript

Hello and welcome to English with Languissimo®, the podcast in English which will help you reach your goals so that you can lead a better life and career.

My name is Joyce and I’m looking forward to spending this time with you.

Let’s go!

Today, I will cover some learning strategies to help you get off on the right foot.

A language has 3 pillars: vocabulary and pronunciation, grammar and structure, verbs and conjugations.

Just like kids, it is important that you read in English as well as listen to English every day. It will help you improve your knowledge and understanding of the language.

When it comes to reading, choose something that you like: magazines, novels, emails, commercials or advertisements.

As for listening, why not listen to movies, watch videos on the Internet, Youtube, Netflix or listen to podcasts like this one?

I recommend that you memorize new words you encounter that are important to you. Don’t waste your energy on words that you will hardly ever use!

Instead, practice common words that you would use in real life.

If you decide to go to the supermarket for example, take that opportunity to review words related to food.

Don’t forget that the brain needs repetition. The more you practice, the more you’ll remember.

Help yourself by making flash cards or by using applications which make some – if using technology is comfortable for you of course!

I can assure you that these little habits will make your learning easier.

And now, some study points:

-        “to get off on the right foot is translated by “partir du bon pied” in French.

-        The noun “learning” comes from the verb “to learn”.

-        Even though the noun “knowledge” comes from the verb “to know”, they are not pronounced the same way: we say “knowledge” (o) but we say “to know” (ow) as in “no” (“non”).

-        The noun “understanding” comes from the verb “to understand”.

-        The noun “reading” comes from the verb “to read”.

-        Note that the verbs “to learn”, “to know”, “to understand”, “to read” are irregular verbs and it is essential that you memorize them.

-        When you give your email address, say “at” for “arobase” and “dot” for “point”.

-        The noun “listening” comes from the verb “to listen”.

-        The words “commercials” and “advertisements” both mean “publicités” in French but “commercials” are only heard on the radio or seen on tv whereas “advertisements” are seen or heard anywhere (radio, tv, magazines, newspapers, billboards, flyers, social media).

-        The structure “the more….the more…" is translated in French by “plus….plus….”. The more I practice, the more I improve. Plus je pratique, plus je m’améliore.

Ta da!
