Hey, what's up? What's going on? Welcome to another episode of English with Dane, a show designed to improve your English. As always, I'm your host, Dane, and you can find me on Instagram at Englishwith Dane. If you want a full transcript of the episode, send me a message on Instagram or write me an email at Englishwithdane at gmail.com. Today's episode is an accent challenge backed by popular demand. So sit back and get your ears ready because some of these are a bit tricky.
All right, let's start the show. Hit it. I've compiled six different accents, some from movies, some from interviews, news stations, et cetera. You'll get it. If you've heard the show before, you know what to do. But if you haven't, it's very easy. Okay. Listen to the audio clip and try to guess where the speaker is from, or what accent you hear, really, because some might be actors putting on or imitating a certain accent. All right? Okay, let's start. Here is the first accent.
A suspicious blaze has gutted a home near Geelong. The fire broke out in the garage of the property just after midnight and quickly spread to the house, sending thick smoke across the town. One resident escaped while two elderly neighbors were also evacuated as a precaution.
Alright, here it is one more time.

Alright, take a second to write down your answer. Here is the second accent.
Yes, you are my advisor. You are the only one I can trust the year. You should have told me not to throw the ages out in the first place. I begged, but you did not persuade me, Nicholas. You did not persuade me.
Alright, here it is, one more time.

Hmm. Tricky one. Take a second, write down your answer. Alright, here is clip number three.
And so we were doing the saying, and I was like, okay, it's going well, and we were having fun, and it's obviously, you know, it's a funny, kind of harmless saying and stuff. And then at the end, when they said that they were moving on to another saying, I just sort of went, oh, moved on. And it was my only same zone, and I was like, it's over.
Alright, let's listen one more time.

Alright, take a second, write down your answer. Here is number four.
Oh, I don't know what. Maybe I could have decapitated an entire village and put their heads on a plate. Got a knife, cut open their spleen and drink their fluids. Does that sound good to you?
Uh here it is again.
Oh, I know what. Maybe I could have decapitated an entire village and put their heads on a pike. Got a knife, cut open their spleen and drink their fluids. Does that sound good to you? Uh okay.
Take a moment, write it down. On to number five. Here it is.
I'm so excited, I'm about that because I never move my I never leave my hometown. I always live in the same place. And it's gonna be a big change, but I think gonna have me and uh gonna learn about a lot about that.
And okay. Let's listen to it one more time.
I'm so excited, I'm about that, because I never move my I never leave my hometown, I always live in the same place, and it's gonna be a big change, but I think gonna have me and uh gonna learn about a lot about that.
And all right, you know what to do. Write down your answer. And the last one, number six, I think this one is my favorite from this batch or from this group. Alright, here it is.
I like both of them. And too much of one thing no good. So if you do in a lot of festivals, you start to miss shows like this. If you do too much show like this, you start to miss the festivals, you understand? So, you know, variety is a spice of life and that's that's reality.
And once again, I like both of them.
And too much of one thing no good. So if you do in a lot of festivals, you start to miss shows like this. If you do too much show like this, you start to miss the festivals, you understand? So, you know, variety is a spice of life and that's that's reality.
Take a second and write down your final answer. All right, now that you have your answers written down, let's go through them again and see how you did. Here is the first one.
A suspicious blaze has got it a home near Geelong.
If you guessed Australian accent, then you are correct. There was a little clue in there, una pista, if you know about Australian geography, because Geelong is a city southwest of Melbourne. I think people often have a hard time with the Australian accent because it sounds like a lot of different accents in a way. It can sound English at times and even a little bit South African, I think. All right, moving on to number two, which was this one.
You are my advisor.
You are the only one that can drop the year. If you guessed African accent, you are correct. And if you took it a step further and guessed Ugandan accent, then you are incredible at this. This clip is from a movie called The Last King of Scotland about the Ugandan dictator Edie Amin. The man you heard was Forrest Whitaker or Forest Whitaker, as we call him here in Spain. Really good movie, I think. All right, third one, this one.
And so we were doing the scene, and I was like, okay, it's gone well, and we were having fun.
If you guessed Irish accent, then you are correct. The speaker is actress Sertia Ronan, who you might know from Little Women, Ladybird, among many others. Her accent is awesome and a little tricky to understand, I'm sure, especially when she speaks a bit fast, like in this clip, right? She was actually born in New York in the Bronx and then moved to Dublin when she was three years old. All right, next one. Moving on to number four, here it is again to refresh your memory.
Oh, I know what maybe I could have decided.
If you guessed Scottish accent, you are correct. I got this one from the movie Shrek, which, if you can believe, came out almost 20 years ago in 2001. The voice of Shrek is played by Mike Myers, who is actually Canadian, but who puts on a great Scottish accent. I must admit though, my favorite Mike Myers role is Austin Powers. All right, the fifth clip. It was this one.
I'm so excited about that because I never move my if you guessed Spanish accent, you are correct.
I normally include native English speakers, but I also like throwing in these type of accents. The speaker is Ricky Rubio, the Spanish basketball player who currently plays in the NBA in Phoenix. This interview was from 2009 when he first entered the league, and he still wasn't very comfortable speaking English. He makes a few mistakes, but it's okay. We understand what he wants to say, which is the most important thing when speaking a language, after all.
So again, if you guessed Spanish accent, you are correct. If you guessed Jamaican accent, you are correct. And it's from an interview in which he's talking about going on tour and playing smaller shows versus festivals. It's the first time I feature a Jamaican accent on the show, so I wonder if you were able to get this one right. If you did get it right, I wonder if it's because of the extensive reach of reggae music, right?
But I'm usually wrong about what accents you'll find easy or difficult because people always write to me with very unexpected results. Speaking of writing to me, let me know what you thought about this accent challenge. Write to me at Englishwithdane, or if you don't have Instagram, send me an email at Englishwithdain at gmail.com. And again, if you want a full free transcript, it would be my pleasure to send it to you. That's it for the show today. I hope you enjoyed it.
