It has become a lost art because parents at the youth level don't want their kids to struggle or be left off of a travel ball team. Learning to struggle and fail early in sports will make you a better athlete/person later in life. Not to mention, learning to switch hit may actually separate you from the pack and allow you to succeed longer in baseball... it did for me.
