I am Priscilla. Today you will be hearing from Abigail, Nathan, and Jose. They will be talking about the education system, the equality in school, and the classes and career paths we take. Hi, my name is Abigail and our first topic is education system. 30 years ago, America was the leader in quantity and quality of high school diplomas. Today, our nation is ranked 36th in the world. have based in our education system right now is just strictly based on the standardized testing.
Is the education system perfect how it is now? And if not, what would you change about it? I would change that the teachers give out too much homework and not enough time to... actually do it and that they move with the material too fast to actually learn it and understand it.
that standardized testing benefits the education system um i think that it's i think that there's pros and cons because i do understand like having like having a test that like shows that the teachers are doing their job and that the students are actually learning because like sometimes
or I don't know because like kids can get just like passed along and not learn because teachers just want to pass them and stuff you know and so you know that's not good so But at the same time, I think that it makes teachers teach to the test a lot.
they have to focus on so much that they actually have to teach that sometimes it takes away like their passion for actually wanting to teach and give their opinion and everything like that and it's also not fair to the students who um have just come here like My sister is a teacher and she had a student who had to take a star test who had just moved from Mexico and he didn't speak barely any English and he still had to take it in order to pass. So I think that...
That's a problem and there needs to be a different way. Yeah. In conclusion, high school students don't believe. that the education system is as good as it used to be. Hi guys, I'm Nate. And I'll be talking about inequality. The results in racial isolation and discrimination in schools are striking. Only 22% of black Americans earn a college degree. Compared to 41% of white population. Compared to white college graduates nationwide, black college graduates nationwide.
Black college graduates are twice as likely to be unemployed. We will now interview a current high school student. Do you think kids, male or female, or race are treated differently in school? I think it really depends on the area in which the school is located. I think if you have diverse teachers in a diverse neighborhood, both different races and genders are more likely to be treated equal.
never been exposed to a diverse group of kids and you put them in a diverse school, I think ultimately you're going to have a lot of problems just because they don't always... feel comfortable or know how to react in those situations. And so they're not always sensitive to different cultures and things like that. And so I think it ultimately depends on the kids and the teachers and the location of where the schools are at. Okay, thank you, Jessica.
After hearing from different people, you could say it depends on the area in which the school is located on how the people are treated. This is Jose, and we'll be talking about classes and career paths. High schools are not preparing students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel after graduation. Only one in four high schoolers graduate college ready in the four subjects of English, reading, math, and science.
No college requires an applicant to have credits earned in health and P.E., but our legislators insist that everyone must take them. or if you just want to find a job right after high school. So it does prepare you. Thank you. Okay, do you think schools prepare you for your future jobs, career, or past? Z prepares in certain aspects, yes, but not completely all of it. They teach us rather how to study and how to do rather than knowing what to do and how to do it. They just teach you how to do.
like the classes we take it prepares us for colleges do you think that career paths in high school benefit us i think that taking classes towards like a certain career and like using like the endorsement plan is a good idea to get kids exposed to different sorts of jobs and what they want to do like after high school before they have to go and spend a bunch of money in college while they're still trying to figure out what they're actually want to do so they can be like
like really specific and take like the like health science path or they can even go just like the like general one and take a bunch of specialized classes in a bunch of different areas just to get a bunch of pieces in every little career. In conclusion, some students think it does prepare you for college or what you need to learn or what you're studying for, while others think it just prepares you. for your basics.
