Suzanne Wells

Hey there, eBay friends. This is Suzanne a Wells your hostess. Today's date is June 15 2022. And this is episode number 65 of eBay the right way. Nancy is my guest in today's episode, and she has a fun story about how she got started on eBay. The very first item she sold, as well as talking about the wide variety of items she sells now, and some general reseller conversation. One quick announcement because I've been getting emails about this, this year's bolo book is

just about to go to print. So we are getting close. And I wanted to take a minute to help you understand that this year's book, as well as every subsequent book, in the future that will come out has all different items than books from previous years. So if you are waiting to buy the 2022 book, and haven't bought the 2021 book, well, you're just missing out on everything that was in

the previous book. I have designed these books to be different, and they contain items that are evergreen, meaning that the items have been good sellers for many years, and will continue to be so. So just think of these books as periodicals coming out once a year. And I will post a YouTube video once the book is available. With some sneak peeks of the items and explaining some new features. In this year's book. I actually tracked how many items I personally learned

about this year. And it's almost half of the items. There are 125 items. So over 60 of them, I just learned about so consider me your personal researcher. All the work is done for you. And all you have to do is start treasure hunting. And I am really excited about this year's book. I have put a huge amount of time into the research and working with my amazing graphic designer to make this book a valuable resource that will help everyone make more money. So that is coming. Okay, now for

the chat with Nancy. Hello, listeners. We have Nancy with us today and say hello to the listeners.

Unknown

Hello eBay listeners.

Suzanne Wells

And we always start off with finding out where you're located.

Unknown

Okay, well I am in an area that we don't like to tell people about because we don't want anybody to move here because we love it so much. Okay, but I'm in north northwest Arkansas in the middle of the Ozark Mountains. We are very very close to Oklahoma and Missouri. That's a matter of fact. I'm probably 30 minutes from Missouri so we're way up north and those aren't mountains are beautiful. And anyway, we we have about 1235 cities in a row.

And the first one is Fayetteville Arkansas which is the home of the university and then the next city is Springdale, which is home of Tyson Foods. And the next city up is Rogers, Arkansas. That's where I live. And then the next city is Bentonville, Arkansas, which is the home of Walmart, Walmart and then above that is a retirement community. That's huge. That's where we play golf. It's called Bella Vista. And they have seven golf courses. And it's it actually actually

part of it is in Missouri. So

Suzanne Wells

anyway, that's where I am. Okay, so I have to ask if you watch the Netflix show Ozar

Unknown

Yes, and it doesn't it's not a good representation of what it's like you're in But trust me, you you're gonna find hillbillies around. There's no doubt about it, but not where I am about I could drive an hour away and and find hillbillies for sure.

Suzanne Wells

No. Well, it's interesting side note is that was filmed in Georgia right near me, Lake Allatoona. Literally, like, I don't know, five miles from me. And they filmed it at what's in the show is called, I think the blue cat Lodge. That was a restaurant that was overlooking the lake. And it's right by a small two Lane Bridge. So when they would be filming, the bridge was closed. And the residents hated it, because they had to go all the way around like 20 miles around

a different way. And all of the trailers and food trucks and all of that were parked where the boat launch was. So it was all congested. And sometimes they would call for extras. But really, for the most part, the residents hated it, because it just clogged up their day. And you couldn't see. So a lot of it was so but it's right there on one of our not so beautiful lakes in Georgia, it's Lake Allatoona. Brown. And they're always fishing bodies out there. People get drunk and go boating.

And it's not a great, like, it's not one of the beautiful places in Georgia. It was a yucky. And yeah, those those TV shows are not accurate representation.

Unknown

Trust me, I could find those people that are on there. I could find them easily. I mean,

Suzanne Wells

oh, yeah. Everybody can just like, like they're around. So okay, that and you may have another thing in common is that you used to live at or near Lake BQE in South Carolina, where I was with my friend. Right? And did you say that your husband worked at the power plant?

Unknown

Yes, there's a nuclear power plant there tend to be a little bit remote. Nuclear plants are not built, you know, in metropolitan areas, they're built out now he's have to be able to like, that's just part of how all that works with the cooling tower. And in that, all that technical stuff that I don't know very much about? Well, what

Suzanne Wells

I noticed visiting here was how clean that lake was.

Unknown

Yeah, yeah. Well, that's a story in itself, because that used to be a town, we're at the bottom of that way. And some man made lake. And when the they came in and built that power plant there, they had to flood it, they flooded that area. And there was people that had houses there, there are people that have businesses there, and they are now all underwater. And you would actually meet someone, and they if they would ask you do you live on the lake? And if you said yes, they did not like you.

Because their ancestors got property taken away from them. And their relatives when they built that lake. So it was so interesting, because you had no like, and then you have a like so all of a sudden you had, you know, prime real estate for sale. And you know, people came from Atlanta, particularly people come there and retire and build build on the lake. And so it completely totally changed the entire area, from just a regular South Carolina town to A

prime retirement area. prime real estate, something like

Suzanne Wells

well, and I did some research on it after I visited there for the first time. And it's I think the second cleanest lake in the United States. Wow, nothing it ranks way up there. And as I just mentioned, I've lived near the disgusting ground. Which a lot of them are because they're just jello and the dirt, mud, you know, getting mixed up in it. So it's not these pristine, clean lakes. You see other places, but I was just so impressed with how clean it was.

And I was right. Yeah, it was one of the cleanest ones in the United States at the time. I looked it up anyway. So

Unknown

I know in Arkansas lots of times, you know, one of the because of Tyson there's a lot of have chicken farms and the runoff sometimes from the chicken arms will get in the water. You know, they just don't have anything like that on like kiwi. It's you know, it's just living there. There's no industry that mean the nuclear plant the nuclear plants very clean. Anyway, so I don't have any of that. But I did not know that Suzanne I didn't know is the claim second clean slate.

Suzanne Wells

well revisit that read. Because I don't know if it's I mean, it's a beautiful place. Anyway, that connection. Okay, so yeah, how could you not it's so beautiful. It really is. So it's just, what, 20 minutes from Seneca, South Carolina. Something like that

Unknown

we lived on. We lived on the lake we live in, in our address was Seneca but we lived on Lake so it's a huge like, I can't remember I'm going to if I give you a number, but there's it's huge. Yeah, it's a big one. Yeah. So

Suzanne Wells

anyway. Okay, so back to eBay.

Unknown

favorite chocolate, right? Yeah.

Suzanne Wells

Well, I mean, we can I can ramble on with anybody about anything. So who knows what we're gonna get into? How did you get started selling on eBay?

Unknown

Well, it's a crazy story, because I tend to be a little bit impulsive about things. And one day, I just said, I'm gonna start selling on eBay. I mean, I did not put any planning into it. I did not put any forethought into it. I have been ordering things from ebay for years. And I just was at a place in my life where I wasn't working. I wasn't employed. And I just love thrifting always have my whole life. And I just decided I was going to do it. And the first item that I sold

was a duck call. And my husband was walked into goodwill. I saw this duck call for $3. And her husband kind of like crazy because he said people like those. So I put it on the line and solve it that day for dollars.

Suzanne Wells

Oh my god. I guess so it's a fast sale for that much money of something that is seems so I don't want to say odd. But yeah. When you think of selling on eBay, you think of clothing and dishes and collectibles and kids stuff that they don't need anymore and adopt I

Unknown

have found just Yeah. And my husband says that people collect them. I did you know that's something I don't know anything about Chris dynasty, remember that. That's what they did this make you know, that was the trend they make up. And anyway, I have found just recently I went to yard sale a couple of weeks ago and I this gentleman had was a former fisherman. And he was also collected some memorabilia from the Civil War. And I bought a fish scale of the ways fish I

bought. I can remember now three or four things that had been fishing. And as soon as I put them on, they sold in minutes and I bought a gun, gunpowder flasks, that was Civil War decor on it, and it sold in a day as

well. So and I when I talked to my husband about he always says that, you know, there's certain things that men just like and that they love to buy on eBay in any way that has any kind of sporting type thing fishing or hunting or, you know, memorabilia from from anything like that, that they will buy it. So that's true. That's true.

Suzanne Wells

Like can you send some of that mojo to me? I guess I need to start looking for different things.

Unknown

Yeah. Yeah. It was amazing.

Suzanne Wells

Okay, now, did you transition to other things? Are you still mostly fishing and hunting stuff?

Unknown

Oh, no, that just that started, okay. The duck call started was the very first thing and I really haven't bottled haven't sold a lot of that stuff. It just happened a couple of weeks ago that I ran into that yard sale or there were some things really inexpensive and my husband was with me and he's like, Yeah, but I sell anything and everything. I I trying to think what I you know, I are still glassware I sell

clothing. I stare probably The two main things that I've been selling lately we I'm fortunate to live about maybe two miles from the goodwill bins. And yeah, and I my first place that I go when I get there is linens and I have sold a lot of vintage linens. Particularly you know the bedspreads that are the popcorn. They call them popcorn bedspreads and Chenille,

Suzanne Wells

spritz, right?

Unknown

Yeah, I've sold a lot of those. And I also have sold a lot of tattered quilts, which cracks me up. Because, I mean, they're, they're not in good shape, but they're old and people love them. And you know, the goodwill bins, you buy stuff there for 79 cents, Pam, the linens are 79 cents a pound. So they asked 810 $2 and a half on a quilt. And so for $49 and I've had one all the time. I even bought one. You know, some are

just ugly to me. But one of them had all these was made had cowgirls on it, you know, repeat of these cowgirls that had been embroidered, you know, and had their cowboy cowgirl skirt on and their cowgirl hat. And it was quilt. And it was old. And it was tattered. And I sold it for probably about $50. So I'm just amazed that

Suzanne Wells

yeah, the first one I sold this one I had had a mother bought it back in the 90s I think and something about they went on a trip through Amish and Mennonite country and bought this from some ladies that had a bunch of quilts out in their yard. And I mean, it was actually you know, it was a handmade Mennonite quilt. And then fast forward to 2003 I got divorced, mom had hip surgery, she moved in with me for a

while. And we went through her stuff, cuz she was like, Oh, you're learning to sell on eBay? Well, let's make some money for me too. And, and I knew that one day would all fall on me anyway to downsize her stuff. So I was like, great, you're here to tell the story of what these things are. Let's do it. So that but that was one thing she didn't want to sell. She kept it and then somehow I it came down to me. Maybe she moved and left it by accident or something I don't

know. But it was definitely a tattered quilt. And I mean, it looked bad. And I was like, well, but I know the history of it and where it came from. This is the thing, and this was probably, I don't know 2020. And so I went ahead and put up for sale, it sold within a week for over $100. And now I know. I know she paid like 300 for it but and I just thought what, why would people want this and it's just rustic farmhouse decor. That's just the style right now or people hanging on the walls

or? And I will say that a older, tattered Quill is very comfortable to sleep under. It's you know, it doesn't get too hot. It does, you know, and it's almost like a cool blanket. You know, I have one now that I bought in, let's see, it must have been 1991 or something like that. I bought it from JC Penney's, and it looks handmade, but it's tattered, but I'm not part with it. Because it's just like, it's just like, Linus is blanket to me. It's just so

comfortable. And I love it. But yeah, it's sometimes you just can't figure out the why behind. You know, people paying so much money for things that look like garbage.

Unknown

Yeah. But I mean, I spend, that's when I go to the goodwill bins. That's my first stop is the linens. And anyway, I continue to find them over and over again. And it It surprises me that I find them because it just surprises me, but they're always there. And I always get it. And I always sell them.

Suzanne Wells

And I think it goes back to the average person. If you're not a reseller. The average person doesn't understand there's a market for things that is just shocking. You know, it's like why would somebody buy that because I help new sellers all the time. And they're like, I don't understand why there's these completed listings for, you know, these old broken, whatever the thing is, why what is that a mistake?

Did that really happen? I'm like, no, they're the market for that, you know, old broken clock parts and stuff like that, that you just would not the average person doesn't know these things have value or they just don't care. And they're downsizing and cleaning out and they're just like, I gotta get rid of stuff. And they don't care. They, oh, eBay is overwhelming to the average person, and they're not going to learn how to do it. So

Unknown

we were in a gift store this weekend, and they had made bracelets out of old typewriter letters. And so I eBay after that, to see if those were available, and they definitely are available. And they'll just take, you know, an old typewriter in his personal letter or the number on it, and it is older because it has metal around it. And they sell them on

eBay. And they built Doom as a lot and sell the old typewriter for about $50 I thought, be fun to get some because you can make some fun bracelets with them. That's what we saw on its gift store was bracelets and you could put a saying on there whatever letters you wanted to use. Anyway,

Suzanne Wells

yeah, I started seeing that on Etsy. When it for okay. And the old manual typewriters, even there, you know, look like they've been run over by a car. And you can sell those because they're taking them apart and using the keys to make things fly. Yeah. So it's just everything's being repurposed and fascinating to me. What people come up with to repurpose. It's like I never

Unknown

write. Yeah, I was fascinated by that. Because they're really cute. bracelets.

Suzanne Wells

Yeah. And it's a fun

Unknown

thing. And there were $65 to

Suzanne Wells

Yeah, somebody's making money on that. Okay, so what other kinds of things have you sold that have interesting stories?

Unknown

Well, one of my most exciting things that I sold was some Cutco knives. And I had learned about that, I'm sure from you. From you know, I'm sure that's because I had never heard of those in my life. And there's I have a goodwill. The Goodwill bins are about two miles this way in the goodwill of Rogers is about two miles the other way. And I walked in there one day and I was in the woods

section. It's not a great big goodwill, but anyway, I was in the woods section and I opened this box up and lo and behold, the box and it was full of Cutco knives. And I just was totally blown away and I grabbed that I was and I probably didn't need to do this, but I did it anyway. I was young and green. And in the business I knew there were valuable but you know they have

a lifetime guarantee. So I went ahead and took them out of the box bundle of Melton Cutco and they restored and completely and they were beautiful knives to begin with. I mean, they were wooden. You know that beautiful. I don't know what kind of wood it was. But it was beautiful wood and they were steak knives. The boxes felt lined, you know, everything was intact. And anyway, goodwill, goodwill, restored them. Anyway, that was one of my greatest fines. I think.

Suzanne Wells

Now wait, let's back up a second. Because I know they had that lifetime guarantee where they would sharpen or repair the handles. Do you have to have any kind of receipt of where you bought?

Unknown

No. No.

Suzanne Wells

And shipping either way?

Unknown

I did. It wasn't very expensive because I took them out of the box. They are I don't know, I can't remember the number. They were either 810 or 12. This has been you know, a year and a half ago probably. But anyway, I took them out shipped them. I think it was you know less than $10 to ship them. And then I had to send them I think $15 For them shipping back things. And they came back and they were like new and I more

for them than I did. You know again, you know you learn those things as you go when you sell put something on and it sells in seconds.

Suzanne Wells

Well, how much did they sell for?

Unknown

I'm gonna say about 99 Okay, and I probably paid I probably invested. They were like $6 leave or not at Goodwill with the box

Suzanne Wells

either. Leave it they miss things all the time. That's all my last and I've never found any except in people's kitchens when I'm visiting their house, like, Oh, I see you have a Cutco knife set there. That's I think everybody does that every dollar on somebody's house, they're like, Oh, I see you've got that some cross stitch thing on the wall

that sells for $300. I see you've got you know, this and that and your kitchen, the Vitamix mixer and, you know, you it's like you're in a thrift store, but it's just a lot nicer.

Unknown

And I have never found one again, I mean, always, always look, I have sold other knives, though, you know that nothing like that. But certain brands, I can't think of off the top of my head, but you just look them up handfuls are just some of the different main brands of knives are sold individually are so cleavers. But I always check out the knives, just check in. And the thing about goodwill that makes you crazy is they take they put

tape over them. And I understand why they do that because they don't want to get cut. But you know, you have to peel the tape back to figure sometimes figure out what the brand is. Dell stuff I sell a lot of as soon as i i buy them is any kind of Franklin Covey or Daytimer if they're leather planters or, you know, portfolios, that type of thing. I mean, as soon as I finish that, and I always get those for dollar 91. at Goodwill, they're always the same price. And they don't know

they're valuable. And they're always in a section in our goodwill that is like messy, messy, messy, and go through that stuff. But it's always worth it

Suzanne Wells

well and knows I love selling because they're overlooked. They're like no technology needed. They're so easy to ship. They're durable, you know, a lot of them fit in a padded flat rate mailer. And contrary to popular belief, not everybody does stuff on their phone, you know, these people who work outside landscapers or real estate agents that have to have they like a book, they like a notebook, especially if they have paperwork to keep up with.

So like surveyors and all these people who work outside and have documentation of things they have to keep handy. Um, not everything's on your phone. And I personally, am a paper person. I have some things on my phone, but it's just something about writing things down, or keeping documents all together. That's what works for my brain. I mean, I know you can do probably anything on your phone, and my kids are always like, Mom, don't you use that app? You can do your grocery coupons through

this app. And I'm just like, I don't want to, I just don't want to. I do technology all day on eBay. Making podcasts, you know, doing emails, all these things I do. And it's like, in my personal life, it's just, I just would rather not.

Unknown

I was gonna list I agree with you. And you know, we live in South Carolina, I manage this landscape office. And the gentleman that I worked for very small office we had we had like five employees, but he did all the landscaping. I'm like kiwi. So I mean, it was unbelievable what people paid $40,000 to have their yard landscaped. I believe it, it blew my mind. Well, in a lot

Suzanne Wells

of that area is very hilly. So you had to do the, like the railroad ties making the steps down to the water. And, you know, they would would turn basically the side of a cliff into a very livable space with a landing and a fire pit. And, you know, that takes a lot of grading and personal hand work to make it

Unknown

he was very, very, very good at what he did. And he loved seeing the end products and the things that he did. But anyway, he never even knew how to turn on a computer. He definitely I mean he could use his phone, you know, to make phone calls. That was about the end of it. So he would definitely be one that would carry I mean, he did everything on legal pads. So but I was gonna go through what I we've been gone like mentioned earlier, I went to Texas, our granddaughter graduated from

high school. And so I've got seven things to ship today. Which is interesting. It's called a vincere weighted silverware adaptive cutlery, but it's for people who have Parkinson's and they need waited silverware to eat with because they. And so anyway, I bought it for a few dollars, it's gone for 25 I sold it. This one is kind of interesting. It is called meals that heal. And it's, you know, you're familiar with communion when you take communion. Okay? Portable community communion kit.

Okay. And it's, again it, you know, except just the little jars that you put wine in.

Suzanne Wells

It's so funny that you mentioned that because over the weekend, I watched that show on Netflix called Midnight Mass. And it's like a seven part. Creepy sort really horror, but I thought it was a good story at first and the priests. He does, he does take communion to shut ins. So he has this kit. It's like a little doctor's bag. And inside, you've got the vials for the wine and the wafers and the Bible and all that stuff. And the cloth you spread out.

And he was doing that with this lady who was elderly and couldn't make it to church. So how weird I just saw that yesterday.

Unknown

It's it's silver plated, and it has the low silver cups, and it has a funnel. And it has two cups, and then has cases for the cups. And then I don't know exactly what's in that. Anyway, you put the little cups in the cases, and you put the bundle in the cases. And anyway, I just sold that the other day. I've had it for a while. I went into Habitat for

Humanity not too long ago. Well, this actually has been a while I've had these plates for a long time, but I keep selling them but they're billary and Bosch. Are you familiar with that? Yes. And there was a several I've got about Gosh, and Mister got about 2020 of them at this habitat store. And they were collector type item and they're numbered. And so I just sold one of those this weekend. This is a really weird one. I bought this at the

bins. So electronics at the bins three to $2 before dollars depending on the size. And I don't even honestly totally know what this is. But it's an automatic vacuum switch for power tools with dust control. So it's kind of It looks like a power strip. Okay, so I paid $2 and sold it for 40 It's going out today. I stopped surrounding is one brand of clothing the if I find it it will generally sell on Amazon and also one shade that I sold them so exciting. I have a vintage Bambi and Thumper

blanket, please throw. And it's it's real old. It's I don't know exactly how old it is. I would say it's probably 3034 years old, and I bought it at a thrift store. For $8. It's going for 40. And then I'm Yeah, Victoria's Secret pajamas. And speaking of Victoria's Secret, I took your bra course. And we're just so informative. And I've recently started buying bras. Pretty Victoria's Secret is a great seller. Nice little bow of Warhol. Is that how you say that? Will? The brand the other brand know

Suzanne Wells

when you call or why? Don't you think I'm pronouncing that right. But that's, that's my southern pronunciation.

Unknown

But anyway, so I've enjoyed selling bras a lot because like you say, they're so easy to ship. And, you know, in your course you talk about, you know, all the information you need is right there on the bra. You just have to repeat it. It's all there the site, let

Suzanne Wells

me know what you got to remember is, and I did a little printable, like a reminder sheet, because you forget to look at the hook and I to make sure they're all there. And you know, little strap thingies work because sometimes that's why they get donated is those two things are not working right. But my friend and I have a joke because I say yeah, bras are small, lightweight and easy

to ship. And then I'll send her like, Oh, I just sold this, you know, 40 J size bra that that's smaller than some other things but people say, Oh yeah, just focus on the great big sizes. And no, I mean, bras are expensive. There's some that you know, even if you're like a 34 b and you want a nice high quality bra You know, they're 80 bucks brand new. It's ridiculous.

Unknown

Yeah, I went dealers the other day just for that very reason to look at bras and just see what different brands they carried. And which ones you know the ones that are the most expensive that we're going to be out front, obviously. So I I just went in there and checked out their role was to see which ones they had out front and how much they were and noted the brands and that type of thing. But I goodwill sells them for $2 going price and on you know when they have their their dollar

day. And the other day, I got one for $1. And then I have a couple of thrift stores around and their highest price bra is $4. For you know, I want good, good quality I don't want you know, people aren't going to buy them if they're not good quality. It's wonderful when you can find a new one, which happens periodically. But I've found that the Victoria's Secrets that are highly padded. They're really popular.

Suzanne Wells

Yeah, a little bit more extra boost up there in the front. Last but they love I'm surprised at the good quality. I find bras like some guy because Because me personally is a frugal person. The next step after I wear it for a while is the trash.

Unknown

Exactly.

Suzanne Wells

But I think you know, something people buy more of they're pretty they make you feel pretty, or you know, functional, whichever reason, but most women have at least one drawer full.

Unknown

If right one,

Suzanne Wells

and then they, you know, recalibrate that and donate those are not wearing and all that stuff. So I tend to gravitate towards the pretty ones.

Unknown

Definitely, definitely, they sell better. I have a beige one that I sold. I can't remember the exact brand of it. But it was kind of different looking. But I had, you know, did a research on it found out that it had some values. But since I started selling them after I took your course, and I probably sold me half a dozen, something like that in the last couple months.

Suzanne Wells

Well, and I find that they don't get returned. Right. I don't know if maybe Luckily, they fit perfectly and they don't want to return them or it's just not worth the hassle. I don't know. I like to focus on things that don't get returned. So good

Unknown

point. I never thought about that. I've never had one return.

Suzanne Wells

Yeah. So that's that's a plus you kind of have to look at the the big picture the long haul. Yeah, you can sell stuff immediately like that duck call. That's not going to get because it's so unusual. And it's a collectible. So that's where my business has shifted like in the last five years is collectibles, things that are hard to find and and I did a podcast with Casey last week. And you know, he's talking about he finds things that are rare

all the time. It's this is supposed to be rare, but I found it. So I love that because anything is possible. Anything can show up in front of

Unknown

you. One thing I was have I found this once I'm found again, it was out of your bolo book, which I love the bolo book. I don't have it in front of me or tell you what page it's on, but

Suzanne Wells

I probably know it's so

Unknown

hot rollers, you know that they use in pageants, and I found those. Really? Yes, I couldn't believe it and they were all off. You know, I had to dig through the bands and put them all back together. And I was like, yes, they're all here and even had lit and everything. There was a crack in the there's one little crack in it. So I paid $2 You know for those and I Psalm 59. I mean,

Suzanne Wells

okay, what she's talking about are the Remington tie curls, I think. Yes. And there's a wax Center, which yes, it gets hotter than a regular curler, but they don't make them anymore. Right. Probably because they get so hot. And I think there were some lawsuits about people's heads getting burned or something but the pageant moms love those for their girls. They create such nice Ringlock curls

for the pageants. And I remember when I learned about these years ago, it's like, the pageant moms want several sets because either their child is blessed. With a lot of hair, or you know, they just want they just want a whole bunch to have some hot and ready to go as they're fixing their child's hair. So that's a big thing.

Unknown

Yeah, I was shocked when I found them and then I found another this is the bins as well I found another set still in the box. It wasn't the tight curls, but it did have the wax center and it was a Remington set. And I sold those, you know, I don't know if I sold them the right price or not. They went for 5999 I paid $2 for him. And the gentleman that bought them said if you get any

Suzanne Wells

more those

Unknown

I said well if I find more, I'll let you know. One of the most exciting things exciting things I found was this was the bins it was just like I can't do the clothes with the bands I just can't get it's just overwhelming to me. I mean I just do the surface I just kind of glanced through that I can

Suzanne Wells

understand I don't have hours Yeah, I don't have the bins here and I don't know how people do it because it does seem so overwhelming and they're like they're like leaned over into the bin with their feet sticking up in the air dig and I don't want to get that close to it like what's in the bottom of this a dead mouse? I don't know.

Unknown

Well speaking of that, I couldn't believe this this kind of creeped me out. I bought a hot plate affordable hot plate it was rolled and they do have a place of Batman's we can plug things in. So I plugged it in and started getting hot. I'm thinking okay, this works well when I did that a roach crawled out. Right. I am so glad I did not bring this on like the road trip. A Why have not sold that? Yes. manufacture that. And what was it

Suzanne Wells

that you found?

Unknown

It was a hot plate like right? Okay, it was it was vintage as portable hot plate that you would use, you know, in your house or kitchen or whatever. But I did find a shin nail robe, a vintage nail robe. And it was it was so cute. It had flip flops and Chanel. It had like a beach ball and Shinya. You're I'm talking about Yeah, the style. I'm what's the brand, you know,

Suzanne Wells

Kenyan robe? Yes. Oh, okay. Yeah, those that's on my list. Yeah, because those those were made famous by Fran Drescher in the nanny. She wore really ones and that's they as was a 90s thing. So those are sort of a collectible. The patterns and they're very thick, and they're just whimsical and fun.

Unknown

Yes, this is so cute. Had just different beach objects on it in the shoe O'Neill and I sold it for it was I got it the bins so I pay you know 99 cents for it. I sold it for around $100 And it was just laying there laying on top of the coils always people are milling around and no it had the belt and everything and didn't have any holes in it. It was beautiful. And anyway whoever I sold it to was like Oh, thank you. Thank you. Thank you I wanted one of

those forever. And so I'm I'm always I've never seen another one sounds but I'm always on the lookout for that. Yeah,

Suzanne Wells

and they're easy to spot like on the rack if if the pajamas are hung up because of the texture there. That Chanel. It's like a bathmat almost like a shag carpet. You know they're very easy to see I always look I'm going to find one one day but you know hey, there's money in pajamas people you're not looking at them.

Unknown

Something else I buy a lot of is loungewear but it definitely has to do with alcohol and like Bud Light or Cougars or whatever any. And Jack Daniels any type of alcohol that's written on the loungewear and I lounge where you can buy for $2.50 Unless it's half price day and then it's $1 and a quarter and I my I'm guessing that college kids bodies I'm just guessing I don't know that for sure. But if I see lounge where that has any kind of alcohol on it, I buy it.

Suzanne Wells

Well I don't know about that. I know some adults that would wear that. So some adults that love their are very specific brands of alcohol. Such as Ketos. Yeah, I could go anywhere. But yeah, I hadn't thought about that. And so it doesn't matter what the brand is. It's just the know.

Unknown

Something else I saw as soon as I, it doesn't even matter what kind of condition it is overalls. Sure. There's a couple of the brands

Suzanne Wells

see us and you got some liberty.

Unknown

Overall, yes.

Suzanne Wells

were purchased. And then the person didn't pay, which that is I bought eBay was fixing that I had that happen three times in May. One was $115 item. They just sent me an offer and I accepted it. And then five minutes later, Oh, I did this by mistake. And I don't you have to go through so many screens. How can that be a mistake. And then another one was an $85 shirt. Loro Piana shirt and made an offer I accepted it didn't pay. And then the latest one is a $70

plush. And it's just it was almost $400 worth of stuff that randomly sent me offers. I didn't send them an offer. They sent me an offer. I and I really think we need to be able to charge them a mental anguish fee. When they feel like Oh, awesome. I sold this. And then they never pay and it's just this this this emotional roller coaster. It's it just makes me sad when that happens. Because like, I thought I saw that and they didn't pay.

Unknown

Watch, you get charged a fee from eBay.

Suzanne Wells

Well, that gets reversed if they are not paying and it, you know, closes out on its own. But okay, I just, I don't understand, you know, it's always I did that by mistake or no communication whatsoever. And I just, I guess these people aren't sellers, but then again, guys, the only place on the internet, you can do that. So hopefully that will be fixed at some point where you know what, if you're going to make an offer, eBay is gonna hold you to it, and you're gonna have to

pay. And I just think you may need to get a little bit more of a spine and do that, because it's just not fair to sellers, to have all these sales that are just really like pretend they're not real. Right. So

Unknown

that's I agree with you 100% on that, you know, I mean, anytime you buy anything, you're immediately charged for it.

Suzanne Wells

Yeah, it's just frustrating. And there's nothing I had,

Unknown

right? I had an interesting thing happened to me, I bought a pair of brand new Birkenstocks. The lady had worn them once. I bought them on Facebook marketplace for $20 and sold them for like 69, something like that. And the lady wanted to return them. She said they were too big. Well, I got him back. And I'm just naive a little bit about things and assumed that I was getting got

the same thing back. Well, when I relisted them, I listed them as you know, basically new Warren once or twice, and this guy sent me a note. He goes, Are you sure those are been never been only been worn once or twice, and I got to looking at them. And she had sent me back a used pair of more used pair of Birkenstocks. And I didn't even realize it. But that was her plan all along.

Suzanne Wells

Yeah, that's, and it just it blows my mind, because I'm an honest person. And I would never think to do that. So that that's my world. And so sometimes these customers bring out the worst in us, because they fully switch a ruse or, you know, that's their way of life. That's how they do everything. Fall, use, like fall onto the spider's web. You're just a victim of their plan. And I don't know, I just feel like karma will take care of it at some point, like I it's out of

my hands. I can't do anything.

Unknown

Right. Let me ask you this. Do you ever sell things that are really expensive? And if so, what kind of protection do you get on that type of therapy? I have a piece of jewelry I'd like to sell. It's about this worth $1,000 that. I'm just hesitant to sell it on eBay.

Suzanne Wells

Um, right. No, that's a general rule. I don't sell that autographed book that sold for $1,000 and that was that was a Real outlier, like, probably never gonna happen again. And then I've had some $300 sales, but I generally am just not comfortable with these high dollar sales. I know other people do it. But I just have been burned too many times feel like too much can go wrong with

those high dollar sales. Well, one thing is it can be returned, and then that you didn't know pay out that week because it took all your money, you still have all your current funds. And that happened a couple of weeks ago, I had canceled sales. And then I had two returns that were kind of high dollar and I'm like, I'm not getting any money this week. So it's just, you know, my, my level of risk is, is pretty low. I am risk of just generally, my whole life, I just, I don't take big risks. I

take calculated risks. But you know, like George Kelly and Ken McNamara and all those guys are grouped Brian Rapoport, Casey that sell these really expensive things. Well, Casey gets a lot of stuff for free. So that's, but I just That's not me. You know,

Unknown

I probably won't sell that piece of jewelry. It's really interesting. It was my brother in law gave it to me. And I don't know how he acquired it. I mean, it was a gift. It's a it's a heat, it's a dove. And it has a little diamond eye on it. But it was presented at the Academy Awards. One year is the yeah, that's all the stars that were on Academy Awards. Got it. And there's, I've got this paperwork, I've got the original box, I have everything. And I'll never wear it, I don't need it.

I just sell it, but I just, I'm just not sure what platform to sell it on that, you know, would be risky, on my part. So

Suzanne Wells

well, I have sold back in the early days, I did sell some jewelry, that it was less than $1,000. But that was a completely different time and place. And now. I feel like I feel like there's a lot more scamming going on. And, you know, I just don't want to fall into that situation. And you know, in that question, Should I sell this? Or what's the highest price item you've ever sold? If you ask 100 different sellers, you're gonna get 100 different

answers. It just adds on that person's experience in life. Their their level of risk tolerance. So unfortunately, I don't have an answer. All I can tell you is I would or would not do,

Unknown

right. I guess when you when that little voice tells you don't you don't know. You get you get screwed a timer to you. It changes you just a little bit, you just become a little more cautious

Suzanne Wells

think, well, maybe you could ask some of these jewelry sellers like Wendy Krueger, who she sells a lot of jewelry. And I think she's she doesn't have a background in jewelry sales. It's just something she got into. But I do see her selling a lot of expensive pieces. So maybe you could reach out to her and ask her how to protect yourself. If you decide you want to go that route.

Unknown

So what other interesting things that I saw my father in law passed away, but he loves to play baseball. And he saved all his jerseys. And so I and they were ripped, and they had stains on them. And they're missing buttons and in the whole shebang. And as soon as I listed those they sold immediately. And they're they're really neat, you know, because back back in his day, he was born in 1923. So back in his day, they would wear wool, which is crazy, you know, to play baseball in softball.

They would say things like Ralph's play Sonam or, you know, some restaurant or you know, whatever, just crazy thing.

Suzanne Wells

How many items do you have in your store?

Unknown

About 550 But we would like I mentioned we were went to Texas yesterday, I mean last week and and on the way back and I went I went through and started marking a bunch of stuff down. Because things that I've had for a long time. And if I'm happy with about 500 That's that's a good place for me. But there's some things I've had a long time that I just would like to get rid of in line so I'm starting to After a few things down,

Suzanne Wells

so what do you consider a long time?

Unknown

Well, I've been doing it for over a year in nine months, approximately, and some of the things I've had, you know, from since then, yeah.

Suzanne Wells

I usually look at about two years and Okay, unless it's something I would buy now. Yeah, and your business changes. So I've got two tubs full of dresses, I can't give a dress away, I don't know what to do. And they're good brands, you know, they're prana and Athleta. And stuff new with tags, Ralph Lauren, dollar tags. And, you know, they're like the faux wrap stretchy dresses that are figure flattering for any figure, like, they're stretchy, so they don't have to fit perfectly. I used to

sell those all day long. And I don't know if it's just, people aren't dressing up anymore, or what the deal is, but yeah, I've got, I'm not buying dresses.

Unknown

I think COVID changed things a lot. You know, people got used to wearing their loungewear every day and not going into the office. And as a matter of fact, we have a first store here that it's wonderful for a store called the Samaritan center, and every bit of profit they make, they use the mind to feed children. And it's a huge thrift store. And they, this, they're scientists, they, they provide food for 6000 kids a week. So it's amazing, but and I used to work there as volunteer.

And now I couldn't do that because I would it would be too, too much of a conflict, you know, to work there. I would get things that have price and

Suzanne Wells

maybe making a pile every time you're putting stuff out. Okay, and I've got that over there as my pile and mine that Yeah.

Unknown

It's just unethical. Money goes to the kids. But anyway, I was in there the other day, we talked to one of the gals that I used to work with, and she said the quality of clothing they're getting is different now than they used to get. Just because people aren't dressing up as much. They're just not getting, you know, the fancy items anymore. donated.

Suzanne Wells

So, yeah, I think that's part of it. We need to switch to those beer themed lounge. And duck call works. Okay, well, we've been going about an hour. So this is where I asked you what kind of advice would you give to somebody just start now because you're, you know, I've been doing it less than two years.

Unknown

Yeah. Well, you know, I'm on several different eBay groups, you know, more people chat about different things. Number one internationals awesome. I just get a kick out of just seeing who's buying stuff from me. And it's no different in anywhere in this Facebook group. People are like, Oh, I'm so afraid to sell over, you know, overseas, there's nothing to it. It's no different from selling to the next state. And anyway, I just think it's so much fun to sell things to

foreign countries. I just think it's so interesting and see where they go.

Suzanne Wells

Yeah. Just look at the map. I don't even know where that is. Where's that they're just people like us that want to buy and manage. living overseas, you don't know.

Unknown

Right? I so I had this kit, it was for canning, like canning vegetables or fruit or whatever. It wasn't the jars and the lids. It was the equipment that you would use, like the tongs that you would pick things up. Whatever. Anyway, it was not a really nice kit. I was only I sold it for $20 but it went to Uganda a little bit with this gentleman, and he said he just can't get things like that there. And you know, he likes to garden and and campings and it's just unavailable to him there.

So then he turned around and asked me if I would sell him some lids and tops two jars. And I found some on Amazon and pricing to him but he said the shipping was just too much. Yeah. I wasn't going to do it not make money.

Suzanne Wells

Well and so on some of these other sites. I don't know how Poshmark works. But I have heard that, like other sites don't even have international shipping, or if it's cost prohibitive. So these people are coming to eBay because in They have to find a seller who will do it. Which I have courses on how to do this, and there really is nothing to it. You don't even need a court. No, I don't understand the mental block people have about the fear of shipping to another country, because we are in a

global economy. You know, there are no borders for shipping anymore. It's just okay, with the exception of the Ukraine and all that kind of side note there. eBay will block shipping to those countries, if there's ever any political unrest or war, anything going on. And it's uncertain that the item will be delivered, eBay is not going to let it go there. They they block that. So don't worry about that. You don't have to know every political situation in the

world. But you know, I don't understand why people fear it. Because everything's documented. If you do it through eBay, the eBay international standard, you get tracking, you know where it is, you can add extra insurance. Like, what what can go wrong? I

don't. Because it's so much different than it was when I started this many years ago, like you had to hand write the label and post office and sometimes after six months, something would come back, I would be like, returned like it never made it like, Oh, you got to go to France and I didn't. So just for the people out there listening that have this mindset is no, international shipping is the one way you can make more

money exponentially. All you have to do is edit your listings, like it's no work, no extra work, you don't have to work harder, you don't have to buy more stuff, you don't have to list more stuff, you just have to leverage what you've already done, and offer more people like, how easy is that? Well said, I'm glad you're a fan, because it is fun.

Unknown

And the other thing I would you know, when you very first get started, obviously, you need to be prepared for anything and everything. And you know, get all your supplies ready and organized. So that when when that item sells, you can just get it in the mail as quickly as possible. And you have all the packing materials that you need the right boxes, etc. And all friends and family are willing more than willing to save, you know, packing materials and boxes for you.

Initially, I was buying a lot of that stuff. And I work one day at our church and our church is huge. And, and when the mail comes, I mean, the mail room is completely full of boxes and packing material and they stick all the packing material in one spot. And a few people now know that I love packing peanuts and bubble wrap. And so they save it for me. I've got access to all that now, where it doesn't cost me anything were initially I was

paying for that. But I don't know, it's just a blast and and the other. The other thing is that, you know, we all love the thrifting part. And the listing part is not always the funnest thing to do. But you just got to get in there and do it and you get an on a roll. And you're you're good to go. You just I love the self similar thing. I just discovered it a couple of months ago. It's awesome. And the new format that eBay uses is so much better for listing. Are

you missing that? No, I love Do you not like it?

Suzanne Wells

I don't because I'm so much faster with the old one. And I feel like that new one, you have to do all these dropdowns to find different options. And I tried it when it first came out. And my feeling is that they are going to continually improve it until they make it mandatory. So I'm just waiting for that. Because I get very frustrated when things slow me down.

Unknown

Yeah, you know what's funny is I they asked me if I wanted to try it. And I said yeah, I want to try it well then enough when I burfi tried it, I did not like it at all. And I said I want to switch back they said you can't they told me I could

Suzanne Wells

Oh, so I won't switch until I'm ready. Right. Okay, so, but I do go ahead. I'm sorry.

Unknown

Like it now. Okay, to me, it's faster. Okay, good.

Suzanne Wells

Well, that's good news that they are continuing to improve it. So I wanted to make one comment on what you said about boxes and shipping materials. Well, you Do you want to figure out your shipping? When you're listing an item? Don't let that cripple you prohibit you from listing it? Because I hear this all the time, like, oh, I have this great item, but I don't have a box for it. Okay, well, then you just estimate, okay, you know, it's going to take this size box, and that probably weighs

about 12 ounces. So did you just add that much to the listing? I feel like people are letting that they're getting in their own way with thinking they need the exact box for you, or they can list it. And you really only need to worry about it, it's oversized, or it falls into that USPS surcharge thing they started in April. You know, or just keep some boxes on hand as a sample size. And what I do is right the weight on. So this will fit in this box and it

weighs eight ounces. So I'm going to add eight ounces to the listing. And you know, that comes with practice and time. But I really want to encourage people to not be so ingrained in having that exact box because you know what, you've got all this stuff to list. And just like you said with several of your items they sold immediately. And so you can always go to Walmart or Home Depot and buy a box if you need

to. Or you know, make one, there's all kinds of hacks where you can make your own box from something you already have. But just don't let that get in your way. Because you could be making money hand over fist on stuff that's just sitting there. And you'll figure out, you'll figure out how to ship it that you know you'll have to so don't let that get in your way. And really don't let don't get in your own way thinking I have to have the perfect box.

Unknown

Now one thing I think you'd have mentioned this as well, but I've gotten away from big items, just because, you know, like big glass trays, you know, things like that. I just don't buy them anymore. When I started I did and then I found out how complicated it was to get them packed properly. So they arrived, you know, in check for the supplier. And I tend to be a little bit of over Packer

anyway. I have Hello, I have one thing, right Fortunately, the last two years if you're not, but I'm over Packer.

Suzanne Wells

And you have to figure out if you want to do it, it amazes me all the people that they don't care, they love it, they ship lamps and TVs and all this, you know, auto parts and all these things. And I personally just don't want to everything in my life is small and compact. And that's just the way I roll. And I mean, yeah, if I see a 300 ollar cookie jar, I'm getting it. Okay. Well, thank you so much for coming on. Having this chat. Nice to meet you in person. Finally.

Unknown

Nice to meet you. And I tell you what, if you guys aren't subscribed, I'm Suzanne did not to me to say this, but I have learned so much from you. I I mean, I follow a lot of people on YouTube and and by far I've learned more from you than anyone. So I appreciate what I appreciate about you so much is that you're so thorough and so detailed in. And when you do come out with something in a premium library, it's got all the answers that you need. I appreciate it very much.

Suzanne Wells

Well, thank you for saying that. I'm glad I sell things to you. And you're doing great. Not even having done this business for two years yet. I mean, you use I thought you were doing a lot longer so good for you.

Unknown

It's just a perfect for me, it's a perfect thing to do at my age, when I'm not employed. And I have time to go thrift. And it's just fun. Fun for somebody my age to do anybody's age, but I you know, I have more time than people probably do.

Suzanne Wells

Well, and that's one thing about you know, the baby boomers, the older Gen X or that we've lived through all these decades, and we know what all this stuff is, you know, 2535 year old they don't they don't remember all these things because they didn't live through it. So I mean, everybody's smart in their own way. But this is like where your age really works in your favor. Because you remember stuff. Okay, well thanks again for agreeing to come on the Facebook group.

Thank you Okay, listeners, thanks for spending some time with us. And rather than a motivational quote, here is some a trivia. I think I'm gonna start ending these podcasts with a joke, or some trivia or something a little bit lighter. Because these days, I think people need more humor, because laughter is what is going to get us through these hard times. Okay, the question is, what collectible toy was introduced in 1975. Do you know the answer

is the pet rock. In the July 14th 1980 issue, Newsweek called Gary dolls pet rock, one of the most ridiculously successful marketing schemes ever. And I chose that item because, I mean, if that guy made millions selling a rock 47 years ago, we are gonna be okay. And I will leave you with that. I'll talk to you next week. Have a profitable and productive week on eBay. Bye
