In 1587, the British left a group of colonists on Roanoke Island, the first English settlement in the New World. They sailed back to England, promising to return with supplies and reinforcements in the following months. Nearly 3 years later, when a ship finally returned with supplies and aid, they found a puzzling scene. The entire settlement had been shuttered, with not a single trace of the colonists anywhere to be found. There was one single cryptic clue that may suggest the fate of the 115 British colonists- the word 'CROATOAN' carved into a fence. Over 400 years later, the mystery of the lost colony still puzzles and haunts curious folks the world over.
