First Contact Retrospective. In 1996, Star Trek was celebrating its 30th anniversary, and the biggest event of that year was the release of First Contact. Through the big screen success of Star Trek Generations, the cast of The Next Generation proved it could carry a blockbuster movie. A sequel was guaranteed. With a brand new Enterprise, new uniforms, a bigger budget, and the Borg, anticipation for First Contact was at fever pitch.
