the Thursday injury report for Dolphins and Chargers. The second injury report after the second day of practice for your Miami Dolphins in preparation for the Chargers coming to hard Rock Stadium on Sunday at four oh five Eastern and for the Dolphins on Thursday, only ray Kwon Davis was listed as a d NP did not practice. It was not injury related. Three players were limited. Running back Matt Brita, cornerback Jamal Perry, and tight end Durham Smith limited in practice.

The Dolphins also made a couple of roster moves on Thursday afternoon. Kyle Van Nou as well as Christian Wilkins and Matt Cole the wide receiver on practice god were added to the Serve slash COVID nineteen list, and Lynn Bowden Junior, the receiver was taken off of that list for the Chargers their injury report. For the update on their Thursday practice report, go ahead and check out the top news story on Miami Dolphins dot com on Wednesday.

Justin Jackson, the running back, did not practice. Trade Turner, the guard and Joey Bosa the defensive end and tackle Brian Blaga. All three of those players were limited on Wednesday's practice. Again, Miami Dolphins dot Com top news story. We'll have the latest for you guys on their Thursday injury report. Let's go ahead and jump into Coach flores Thursday morning media availability threat, and he started off with the question about new Dolphins running back DeAndre Washington, who

of course was acquired on trade deadline day. He comes over from the Las Vegas Raiders. We broke down his game a little bit, what he does in the passing game, some of his wiggle and burst in the open field last week on the Drivetime podcast. Let's go ahead, though, and hear from Coach Flores and get his evaluation of DeAndrea Washington and why the Dolphins decided ultimately to trade for him. You know, we watched him, you know, during

the free agency process last year. So I think he's got good vision, good run skills and catching the bad back field. You know, just doing some some some background on him, and it was a hard worker. It's important to him. He's competitive, so so an opportunity and you know, Chris and this the personnel scas after the nice job kind of pinpoint the type of that we're looking forward. They got it done, So DeAndrea Washington out here in the fold. We know Myles Gascon remains on injured reserve.

Last week was the first game that he missed because of the injury, and obviously Matt Brito was out last week as well. He was back at practice, albeit an

a limited capacity on Wednesday and Thursday. This week, We've also got Savon Ahmed back there, who had some good carries on the game on Sunday as well, So maybe some more depth in this running back room getting grounded out here a little bit down the second half of the season, down the stretch here to go along with Jordan Howard, who of course had his fourth rushing touchdown

on Sunday. And speaking of that running back position, Coach was asked about Matt Brita and what he can do besides the speed element of his game to help this football team out. Coach says, he's already helping this team out. Well, I think he's. I think he's he's he's definitely helped team us far. Uh. But it was nice to see him out there yesterday and just you know, take a few reps and and see him move around a little bit. So that was nice. But look like you said, he's fast,

he's explosive, he's tough. I think he's been He's done a really nice job for us in the kicking game. You know, he's gotten his opportunities as a runner. You know, he's he's broken up some some some big playze and he just needs to do what he's been to him. He prepares the right way. It's important to him. And if he just continues to do what he's been doing, I think he'll be just fine. Up next, coach was

asked about some of the blitz frequency. The Dolphins ranked five in the NFL in terms of their blitz frequency, but justin Herbert, the charges were quarterback has had some success against the blitz. Coach was asked about how the success of the opposing quarterback affects how the Dolphins want to call their game as far as they're blitzing and

aggressiveness on defense. Yeah, I mean, you know, you see some of the things that you've done in the past or in previous games show up in another game and he's been effective against It makes you think twice about going that route, so we'll, um, you know, we've we we're kind of going through the defensive game plan extensively, you know, without getting into you too deep into what we're gonna do or what we'd like to try to do. Um. Yeah,

that's that's part of it, part of the equation. You know, he's done a good job against you know, pressure, UM, but it's really done a good job against everything. So and they gotta they do a good job offensively, run game, pass game, UM, screens, draws, they moved the ball efficiently third down, red zone. So it's a good football team.

You know, that's one element of it. You know, it's pressure, and you know if we call it, when we call it, we've got to do a good job executing, knowing full well that they've been able to execute against those types of it's called defensive structure. So definitely a tough test. He's a good player, they had good coaches like a receivers,

tight ends back, so, UM, tough test for us. Might have to ask coach to stop hitting that pen on the table and he talks because it picks up on the microphone here a little bit on the podcast, we talked about the preview of the Chargers Dolphins game, or talked about the Charger's ability to beat the blitz and to go over the top with their deep passing game in the preview on Wednesday's podcast. If you miss that addition of drive time, go ahead and go back and

check that out. We go in depth about how the Chargers attack vertically against pretty much everybody, with multiple forms of guys that can make big plays down the field. Mike Williams a big, tall, fifty fifty ball guy that really turns him into that Davante Parker ball. They've also got Jalen Guiton, who over half of his production in terms of his receiving yards this year has come on passes thrown over twenty yards down the field. Will check

that out. Let's go ahead and get back now to coach Flores, and so we talk about the vertical threats outside with Mike Williams and Jalen Guiton, and Mike Williams is more than just a vertical threat, by the way, this is one of the better receivers in the NFL. A top ten draft pick once upon a time, but a guy that was drafted in the second round once upon time. Who has become, for my money, a top ten receiver and the very best route runner in the

entire National Football League. For a long time, I went back and forth on Keenan Allen and Doug Baldwin in Seattle, but of course Baldwin retired, So now Keenan kind of has the the throne all to himself for my money, Let's go ahead and here from coach Flora's about Keenan Allen the challenges he presents inside slot. Because the Dolphins have, of course Byron Jones and Xavien Howard on the outside. Do they think about bringing one of those guys inside

to cover Keenan Allen. Here's Coach Flora's on that answer. Keaton's are very very He's one of the top players in the league, very productive, very good route runner, good hands, good after the catch. I feel like I've seen him every year for the last ten years. Yeah, he's a good He's a very good player. Uh and uh. He poses a lot of problems, but they got they got other guys that post problems as well. Um, Guitan, you know,

Mike Williams. It's a hunter Henry m So we're gonna have to deal with with guys on a perimeter, obviously we need to deal with Keenan and the slot. When he's in the slot, I mean, they move him around so you can try to pinpoint where he is. But again, you know, hen does a good job of moving these guys around. Um. So again that that's that's part of the you know, some of our things we have to deal with defensively. Uh. But yeah, all those conversations have had.

Um you know, do we move a guy that's primarily outside inside and you know, do we leave him outside and deal with the issues inside. Well, we move and they don't move, We're good. If we move and they move, you know, now you know they got what they want. We you know what I mean. It's just those are all the kind of gymnastics you go through as you're you're trying to game plan. So we'll see, you know, you'll find out on Sunday. But what we all know is that keen now is a very good player, and

we know Herbert will be looking for him as you should. Yeah, I'm really excited to watch this matchup of the Dolphins defense versus a rookie quarterback because I think that one of the things this Dolphins defense does a good job of and I'm sure coach Flores would would tell you this as well, is they mix up their looks, they mix up their blitz looks and their coverages in the back end, and they find a way to create mismatches

in the past rush game. We've talked about that for this entirety of the Drive Time podcast since it came to be a thing back in February, but also my time previously with Locked on Dolphins. We talked about how they find ways to scheme pressure on the quarterback through games and through stunts and twists and different overload blitzes and and trying to get the five guy up front of the offensive line into one protection look and then you bring something else and it causes confusion. It creates

free rushers. We've seen it two weeks in a row now with Emmanuel og Ball, because when you send that zero pressure and you mug guys up in the A gaps in the B gaps and bring those linebackers down, all of a sudden, the running back back there, if there is somebody not an empty formation, if there's a running back or a tight end in formation, their job is to work inside out. You want to get the most immediate pressure on the quarterback coming right up the middle.

Take care of that first, then work outside. And because of that, because of Jerome Baker and Kyle van Noy and you land In Roberts and all these guys that can put in those a gaps to simulate pressure that way,

you have to worry about those guys. And then all of a sudden you get Immanuel og Ball taking a free run on your quarterback and two games in a row, I mean that's produced fourteen points, not to mention Shack Lawson giving you seven more essentially with his strip sack and Kyle Van Noy's recovery down to the one yard line that Miami punched in one play later on a Miles gas Can touchdown run against the Rams. So the idea is to create confusion on the quarterback. It'll be

a big test for Justin Herbert, the rookie. He's had a hell of a season. Good on good Dolphins defense and their pressure against the young quarterback. I cannot wait to see how he handles it on Sunday. Let's go ahead and flip this thing over to the offensive side of the ball. Coach Floors was asked about the offensive line combinations. We saw seven guys play on Sunday. Solomon Kinley had the fifteen snaps, Austin Jackson had forty three,

Julian Davenport out there for one snap. The other guys played the entire game, Jesse Davis flipping from left tackle to right guard. Here's Coach Flores on the Dolphins offensive line, the combinations, the rotations, what they might do on Sunday. Um as far as Solomon Kinley, you know, I talked to you all the offensive line. I talked to really, I try to talk to everyone on the team. But look, my message is normally the same. Let's improve, Let's get

better every day. What happened last week or six weeks ago, it doesn't matter. It's about what you do today. HI perform in practice today, and you know, I'll how you take advantage of opportunities when they when they present themselves. So there you go. Coach Flores is Thursday morning media availability. If you guys want to see that and its entirety, go ahead and check it out up on Miami Dolphins

dot com as well as the team's YouTube page. You also can find Dolphins Today up there, as well as all the press conferences for your Dolphins players and coaches

here on the Miami Dolphins YouTube page. Let's go ahead and get nowt to my interview with Dolphins tight end Adam Shaheen and I had been putting this piece together up on Miami Dolphins dot com for a little bit of time here looking at the tight end room because I'm so fascinated by the number of jobs these guys have to fulfill in terms of past protection, run game scheme, getting into the routes and route combinations for the quarterback when he does throw the football to the tight ends,

and not just that, but special teams as well. Having Chandler Cox of fullback in that room too. There's so many different has these guys have to wear. You might have heard in the past that tight ends one of the harder positions for rookie to come in and have an immediate impact. We saw Mike Asiki kind of have

a glow up from year one to year two. We've seen it across the league several times with the young tight ends making more of an impact in their second year, and you can understand why they have so many roles. They have to fulfill and it's probably a lot early on for these guys, but right now Miami has a good mix of veterans in that room, but young veterans really because both Gasicki and Smite have been the league for three years now. Adam Shaheen and his fourth season

just got the contract extension. So we talked to Adam about the tight end room, had a little bit of a buzz round, uh speed round with him rather talking about who's the best at what and that tight end room and just some fun questions for Adam Sheheen. Let's go ahead and turn out to my interview with Dolphins tight end Adam Sheheen and joining me now on the Drive Time podcast is Dolphins tight end Adam Shaheen. Adam, how you doing, man? What's going on? Not too much?

It's gonna talk to you here. I like to always ask the players on the podcast. You know, it's it's a long season. Football's a war of attrition. How's the body feeling right now? Man? You know, not too bad. You know, everybody at this point has some some bumps and bruises, but you know we're working through it and you know, we kind of finished strong over the last

half of the season. And I think one of the more intriguing parts about the tight end position in the NFL is the fact that it's kind of a small room. You don't have, you know, offensive line or wide receiver where you have ten twelve guys in that room at a time. I'm curious to to know kind of how you've you've kind of kind of become innundated with the Dolphin's tight end room here with Mike A. Sicki and Durham Smith, and how you've kind of been accepted among

those guys in that tight ends room. Um, you know, I feel like, for me, this is the best room I've been in as far as like what what I worked well with. So it's been really uh good. Those guys are awesome as well as Chris and Chandler and then you know the other tight end coaches with Mike and Shahn. So it's been a really good fit. We have a lot of fun, and you know, we've been able to go out there and actually been playing pretty good and be a positive as a whole I think

for the offense. So yeah, you you mentioned their Chris Myrick obviously and Chandler Cox. The Dolphins fullback here. And I want to say it was coach at Godsey who mentioned something about the muscle room. Is that what you guys call that? Is that a different separate thing? How did you get into the muscle room? Like, what's the

requirements to get yourself into the muscle club? I wouldn't say we're muscle Well, I think that's just a George term likes to you know, Chandler's, you know, pretty stocky guys. So I think he just likes to give Chandler a little well actual love for that. So so, Adam, I've got a great picture that's gonna go on the feature, the written feature on Mimi Dolphins dot com for you know, talking about the Dolphins tight end room. And it's a great picture of you and Mike and Durham celebrating after

Durham's first career touchdown catch. And I was just curious, you know, we talked about the brotherhood of that room. Was there any like unique initiation or type of thing you had to do to kind of be accepted or like a moment where it was like, Okay, he's one of the boys. And I know that both those guys are really tight, like best friends was the was you coming in was an instant and it takes some time? Was there a moment and like how did that happen? Um?

You know there was an initial like initiation. I think, like you know most rooms, I think, came in and it worked hard and you know just kind of you know, earn their respect and you know, come friends after that. So one of the yeah, I guess, I guess time to change as far as any possible hazing. But you wouldn't have that anyway, because you're not a rookie anymore. So no, no more of that in the NFL. But I do want to go back to Mike Kasiki's rookie year,

and I was curious if you'd seen this. I'm not sure that it would come up for you, but they did this thing back when players got drafted in that class, where they had a few guys attempt to draw their team's logos. Have you seen that? No, I haven't seen that, Okay, So so you asked Mike about it one of these days. He tried to draw the Dolphins logo and it I won't tell you what it looks like. It's just it's not good. I was curious if you hadn't seen that

if you'd give them a hard time for it. But yeah, George would appreciate that as well. I'll go ahead and shoot over to you after this, after this phone call, you'll you'll, you'll really appreciate you can give him a hard time for it. I want to play a quick speed round with you right here. Among among those three guys, we can go ahead and throw Chandler and Chris and there as well, just a real quick speed round about who is the best at category X? So to speak?

You go with that? Sure? Okay? Who do you think is the best dancer among you guys? Do I go? Do I have to count myself? Of course? Okay, I'd save dancers. Chandler, Chandler. What's his best move? Um? Some kind of circle? Some kind of circle move. I don't know if you would know this because you've been here only since you know, COVID became part of our lifestyle. But who do you think might be the best cook or best chef, best best person in the kitchen? Yeah?

What's your go to specialty? Steak? Awesome? Awesome? I love that. I can't go wrong with good steak. Who is the best basketball player? Oh? Um? You know, I think either I obviously Mike play, but on the he's got some length and some athleticism, and then Durham I can see being described. I don't know. I played college basketball too, so maybe Mike, we'll give it some Mike, I played Division two ball my first year in college, and then I transferred to play football. How about the best joke

slash storyteller? Joke slash storyteller? Um like, who's the class clown? I guess class clown? Um mm hmm. Maybe Mike it's Mike. Yeah? Does does he? Does he come in with like the you know here, what's the deal with airplane food? Or is he? Is he a little more just kind of off the cuff. No, it's more so just laughing. I guess I'm not not not not a like an initial like a joke. Yeah it's a good Yeah. Back to the back to the muscle club? Who who bench patches

the most? Chris? That was quick? Yeah, yeah, that was easy. Who's the who's the best dress of the group? Best dress? I mean it's tough. I don't see these guys much outside of facility with COVID, right, so maybe, uh, I don't know, Chandler. Okay, can see him. He got a bunch of Lulu stuff. Chandler, there you go. I think I heard someone talking about Mike's Lulu the other day too. It's maybe it's a maybe it's a tight end thing for the Lulu um and the last one for you here,

who's got the best taste in music? Like? Who who's the guy that gets the Bluetooth connect when you guys are on if you were to take a road trip, Oh, we gotta give Durham one here. We gotta give Durham one here, so we'll give it. I would I would have guessed just total assumption that Durham's a country music guy. Am I wrong on that? I don't know about that. I don't know. I could see it for sure, I

don't know for sure. No, it's a it's I mean, it's the kind of the blue collar mentality that Durham has and that coach Godzie always talks about when he when he tells the media about how much he appreciates the way Durham works. And speaking of George Godzi, you know, we get a chance to talk to the assistant coaches every other Tuesday. We get to hit a chance to talk to George the media, and I always really appreciate

the way he communicates his answers to us. What can you say about what type of communicator George Godzia is one of a kind. Just the way he says things and get to the crosses, you know, very unique. We'll take it. That sounds great. Yeah, he's I always he's always in depth. I always appreciate that about him. Let's go back to when you arrived here, Adam. We'll go ahead and close with this um. When you were first

traded in Miami, what was your initial thought? I mean I was I was pretty happy just you know, become coming down and have an opportunity to play, so you know, I had to get some things right healthy wise and being able to do those with them, you know, a lot of good help from the training staff and the coaches, and you know it's paid off for me and hopefully you know, paid off for the team. I think as well,

it's been good. Well, I think the proof of the putting there as far as it paying off for you and the team is is the contract extension. What was your thoughts, you know, kind of going from the process of being traded and then getting to a new team and then you know, halfway through the season or less than that, you've got a new contract here with the Dolphins. Yeah. I mean for me is just like uh man, we got traded. You know, usually that's not always the greatest thing.

And came in here, like I said, with some health and stuff and just work through it and pretty much put my nose down and with everything I could and played as hard as I could. And that's you know, I'm happy with the results so far. So but like I said, we still dote eight games left, absolutely, Adam, Well, I won't take up too much more your time, you know, enjoy enjoy the rest of your day, and I guess to get back into the film there and stuff, and uh,

we won't won't keep you the longer on draft. I appreciate your time today, Adam. Thanks. I appreciate And there he goes. That was Dolphins tight end Adam Shaheen. If you guys want to see the feature up on Miami Dolphins dot com, go ahead and go there Miami Dolphins dot Com. The tight End Room one of many hats for your Miami Dolphins. Let's go ahead and finish up this Thursday edition of the Drive Time Podcast with some player media availability, and we'll go ahead and start with

veteran offensive lineman he plays everywhere, Jesse Davis. And first, Jesse was asked, you know, you're one of the guys that has been here for a few years now and we're here to the entirety of last year and now year two into head coaches head coach Brian Flores' tenure in Miami, with the Dolphins playing good football right now, winners of four straight, what are some of the things you've seen kind of flip and turn around for this team to make that jump and have a stronger first

half this season than you had last season. Here's Jesse on that. You know, we kind of flipped it pretty quick, and we've we've had some good leadership on this team. Our defenses, you know, really playing really well, and then our quarterback situation is really well as as well. In the old line kind of had our struggles too, but I feel like we're on the top end of things right now and trying to get that solidified to hopefully

a little bit more. You know, we'll have more production on offense for sure, and we talked a lot about running backs on this podcast. You heard coach off the top of the episode talk about Matt Brita, a little bit of DeAndre Washington talk as well the Dolphins new running back who was acquired on trade deadline day. Here's Jesse Davis talking about a player who made his NFL debut on Sunday and the win in Arizona, savan Akhmed. Here's Jesse on Miami's workie running back who led the

team in rushing with thirty eight yards on Sunday. Yeah, you know, he's willing to learn. He's a really coach and pull back. Um, he's a quick, really fast guy. Especially have the backfield that's to it kind of helps our offensive move as you know, those faster guys that can you know, hit the whole and lead on. No, I'm excited to see him, you know, develop more obviously gasking and newly developed. And I feel like that's a

similar type of running back. And earlier in the press conference, Jesse alluded to some improvements in the leadership that he thinks he's seen in the recent Dolphins team, and he was asked to expand on that. So here's Jesse on improvements in leadership and the guys that are brought in here coaching these guys and the guys that we brought in in free agency or in the draft, I feel like, you know, they kind of did a really good job

getting that done. And we you know, we have guys that stepped up and more vocal, especially younger guys too. You know. It's kind of a good little marriage we had going on. I feel like it's only gonna do that. And we kind of continue our theme of talking about the running game here on this Thursday edition of the Drivetime Podcast with Jesse Davis talking about where the team can can improve the running game and kind of get

rolling with some success early in the game on the ground. Yeah, you know, as soon as we can get him get those first downs rollingly, I feel like we gain a momentum and that kind of opens up to play calling a little bit too, you know, and we can get the run game established. And obviously it hasn't been that great in the run game and kind of more reliable in the past or the you know, the RPO kind

of world. But if we can get that run game going, you know, we can open up a lot more and then hopefully I have two more comfortable back there as well. And you heard Jesse talk about savan Akhmed earlier in the podcast. Let's go ahead and hear from someone we have never heard from before on the Drivetime podcast. He

made as NFL debut on Sunday. Savan Akhmed, who was first asked about the impact of having Miles Gasking here with him in Miami and how much he kind of helped show Savon the ropes like he did back at the University of Washington. But still Gokus, Oh, man, he's been tremendous. Just like when I first got to Washington, you know, I was a freshman using junior and you know, he just kind of showed me the roots and make sure I was good. So, you know, definitely a blessing

to be to be a part of this organization. Also to be with Miles again. And so Savon and Miles lived together in college at the University of Washington. And apparently there was a midnight race that went down one night here Savon on that race, Yeah, man, because we lived together in college, so, um, you know there's a

night he was votes going back and forth. Um, because in high school he had beat me in the our four by one and came down to like inches and he had beat me when I was fifteen years old. He was. He was a senior at the time. So we were just talking about that and then we just kind of it was late. He was like, all right, let's just go to race. And we had raced a couple of times, and you know, I got him in the like the first two and he got me on the last three year them. So I think it came

down to a conditioning thing. And I love these these young kids in their first time doing this type of thing because you and just see a big smile on Savan's face while he's giving us press conference, and that's a perfect lead into this question that was asked him about the emotions or how special it was to him to make his NFL debut on Sunday. I mean, it was it was so cool to be a part of you know, I just wanted to go out there and waiting. You know, I wanted to do do whatever I could

and my party to go out there and win. So it was definitely a childhood dream to be a part of that. You know, it's a big time game and a big win for our organization. So you know, for me, it was it was I was happy to be a part of that. And obviously, you know the first game, you know, you just kind of go into it excited and I was happy, you know, you know, blessed like that, the opportunity that you know, coach loan and does the gaming opportunity to go do that. So I was happy

to be a part of that. And you know, get out there with a win. Let's go ahead and finish up here with savon on the big run he had the nineteen yard or on Sunday was the biggest of the day for the Dolphins and obviously the biggest and a young career so far of Savan Akhmed uh Man. Make the most of it, make the most of it, and then you know, kind of just hold onto the ball, um, kind do do what I've been coached to do, and

I don't. I think I was running that patch of Puterson and I'm like, oh man, that's pat p So that was kind of cool. But uh yeah, you know, it was kind of you know, credits to the offensive line. You know, they you know, they weren't really hard and um, you know, they're able to open up some stuff for us. And as a team. So that was that was really cool, and not only in the ring game, but also in

the past game. Let's go ahead and go on the other side of the football here and here from Dolphins defensive tackle Zack Steeler on the fourth down stop towards the end of the game late in the fourth quarter. That really helped the Dolphins get I guess it did get in the football back, really help the Dolphins find victory as the offense went down and kicked the field goal on the following drive. And then of course Miami's

defense boat up late in the game. Again, here's Zack Steeler on the fourth down stop late in that game. I mean, plays like that always feel good. Um, it's just uh, it really was just just close acted coaching. Um, especially those fourth and inches, third, third and shorts. The key's just knocked back and make sure your gaps on and go from there. Um. If you don't get knocked back during get he's gonna fall for the end anyways.

So um, that's kind of my mindset going into that fourth, fourth and short was and you did see the knock back on that players Zach was able to engage and then kind of toss his man to the side, and it was one on one and that gap between he and the Cardinals left guard on that place. So big time play by Zach Seeler. Let's go ahead and finish this thing up here with Bobby McCain, who was asked specifically about quarterback Justin Herbert and what the Chargers QB does. Well,

he's good. He's a really good pastor. He's got a good he's got a really good deep ball. Um. You know, even though he's a rookie, you can tell he's he's seeing things a lot better than he was when we first got in um in the beginning of the year. Um, he feels a lot more comfortable. So Um, you know he's a big, big, tall frame guy, big got big arm. Um. That was a deep ball. Well, and you know he's gotta keep it. We gotta keep him in front of us.

or more yards downfield. With the pass rush combining up with the coverage on the back end, we'll go a long way to determining who wins that game

on Sunday a hard Rock Stadium. All right, that's gonna be my time here on this Thursday edition of the Drive Time Podcast. We'll come back tomorrow and have the Flashback podcast. We have plenty of content up on Miami Dolphins dot com for you as well, getting ready for Dolphins and Chargers Sunday at hard Rock Stadium.
