Slash coronavirus and we go ahead and kick off this Friday, August one edition of the Drivetime Podcast with the morning audio from Brian Flores ahead of practice. As he starts off before the Q and A session begins with some news on a couple of Dolphins veterans,
Um and cab On Frasier. They won't be a practice today. Um, they're both out with you know, kind of personal for personal reasons. I'm not going to elaborate more that, um, but just so you guys know when you don't see him out there, UM, you know, personal reasons. They're both. They both I won't be a practice of it. And Coach would go on to say that he's not going to discuss those matters any further. They are personal matters with both Bryan Fitzpatrick and Cavan Fraser, so respect the
fact that they are personal matters. He did feel a couple more questions about it, though, and he discussed it a little bit more at length, although telling us again not going to discuss them in too much detail. But he did respond to a question about Jake Ruddock, who came in for a workout earlier this week. But Jake, you know, government for a visit you. We'll just see where that goes. Having signed, you know, having signed him. So,
but that's kind of, you know, just standard operating procedure. Um, say a look and see where guys are, just from a roster management standpoint, so from the offensive side over to the defensive side. Coach was asked about his evaluation so far early on in your number two for Dolphins outside linebacker slash eds slash linebacker plays a lot of possessions Andrew Van Ginkle, last year's fifth round pick out
of Wisconsin. Here's coach on Andrew Van Ginkle. Yeah, well, you know, you know, the first thing I'd say is, you know, he's tough, he's smart, he loves to play. Um, he's got some length, he's got some straight line speed. He's gotten stronger over the you know since we got him, So he's made a lot of improvement. Um. You know, he played, you know, at the end of the season last year. UM, so he's got some playing experience under
his under his belt. Not a lot, but he understands the speed of the game and you know how strong the player's art in this league. And you know, he worked worked extremely hard in the offseason trying to make that you know, first to second year elite. Uh. He's had a good a few days so far. It's still early, but he's taking advantage of his opportunities and hopefully we continue to see that type of improvement up next. Coach was asked about the quarterback competition beyond Ryan Fitzpatrick since
he won't be out there for practice on Friday. And if you ask coach a question like that, he's gonna bring it back and talk about the entire football team because it is a fifty three man or this season, fifty five man job. You have to get done on Sundays throughout the course of the week. So he's gonna
talk about his entire football team. But he did go in depth a little bit on how the Dolphins brass, the coaching staff and the personnel people in the front office spends the day off trying to find ways to improve the football team. They obviously evaluate this stuff every single day, the strength the weaknesses. Here's coach Flora's talking about how they can try to get better every single day.
We're just trying to take it one day at a time, get better, uh improve, see where we're Uh, you know what the strengths and weaknesses are on the team, and that's a lot of the conversation. We have one our days off and try to see what we can make improvements with each individual and obviously trying to improve each unit.
You know, whether it's nickels to dime defensively to our base package, defensively to our eleven twelve, you know, personnel groups offensively, and punt team and kick off return really every phase. So uns where we're at. You know, everyone's trying to improve, get better, and I think those guys are doing a good job. Rosen is doing a good job too, is doing a good job. But I think a lot of guys that a lot of positions are
are making some progress. And here's coach talking about his expectations for the quarterbacks every day, especially the young ones, as they try to improve and increase their level of knowledge and the offense and get closer to where the coaching staff wants them to be for the start of the season. Um, you know it's it's it's a new offense. So you know the area's improvement right now? Are you know, kind of honed in on on that? You know, so communication in and out of the huddle. Uh, you know,
two minutes obviously an important part of the game. You know a lot of what happens in two minutes. It's it's quarterback driven. So how many time outs do we have? How much times on the clock? Uh? Do we need to stay in bounds? We need to get out of bounds? You know, those are things that we're saying in Uh that chance is gonna be saying to him in the helmet, but you know, quarterback needs to know that, um and kind of have a feel for all those things, you know,
without being told. You know, so essentially they end up becoming the coach on the field. So, um, you know, improvement in that area for all quarterbacks, you know, frozen, I mean there young so Rosen's Rosen jump. You know, you could say, you know, he's got two three years on but he's still a young player. Uh, the same as to us. So, um, you know two minutes, you know, red area, when the when to make to try to you know, make the big throw versus uh, you know,
take the check down. And you know we talked about that this morning. Just your decision making, you know, is it is it based on your read? Is it based on matchup? Is it based on the situation. You know, we may just need to feel going, may just need five yards and your guys wide open down the field on the sideline. I mean, you know, those are decisions quarterbacks got to make. So those are kind of there's a lot there and I probably went an overboarder on
the question, but I'm looking for a lot. I think every every coach and you know, at every level is looking for the same things. And that's what we're looking for leadership. We're looking for communication, looking for someone's making good decisions, h consistent, consistently making good decisions. I think one of the things we can expect from a coach flora has lead team and a coach Flora's staff is that they're gonna find ways to put guys into uncomfortable
situations and prepare for really the unexpected. And so when a situation occurs where maybe you know, a quick turnover, something quickly happens in the game, or you have to get back up there, get back on the field and get ready to go back in there, you're ready for it, and you're you're comfortable with the uncomfortable. And I talked
about this on the podcast the other day. I practice when they broke down from the team period into a field goal period, and after the before the first play of the field goal period, they sounded the horn once again and had the team rush back over to team
period again. And just a good opportunity to see how guys respond to situations that they didn't know We're coming ahead of them, so surprised the guys put them in situations where they have to think critically and always be on top of your toes with the quizes and that type of thing a Brian Flora's staple. And here's coach talking about the evaluation of players without the benefit of
having preseason games this August. I mean practice, so you know, we we we you know, we evaluate practice, but at the same time, you know, you just never know when the lightbulb goes off for for you know, coaches, players, writers, you know, you just I mean, I think it's you know, different for everyone. UM. And he's had some a lot of good moments so far, so you know, we'll just kind of see how it goes and keep continue to
get better and experience helps for sure. UM. But like you said, we don't have the preseason games, and but we'll try to you know, uh, create situations to see whether or not you know that decision making processing, UM is where we needed to be, where he wants it to be, and you know he's putting the work in to do that. So are all the quarterbacks. And I know we've spent a lot of time on the quarterbacks, but it's really you know, each player in each position.
UM that he their coach is referring to was Josh Rosen Here he is talking about the rest of the positions outside of the quarterbacks. From a situational standpoint and decision making standpoint, everyone's got to make good decisions on the field, communicate and and uh, you know, try to put this team in the best position to string good
places together. Stay and kind of on that theme. And on that topic, here's coach talking about trying to simulate game situations with a scrimmage atmosphere and his team portion of practice and whether or not the Dolphins will have scrimmage is going forward from here up until the start of the season. I mean something we talked a lot about. Well, you know, I try to use every team period as a scrimmage. I think when you I don't know if
you're alluding to like live tackling on things of that nature. Um, that's something we talked about. You know, we may or may not do something like that, but I think there's a lot of that goes into it. Health of the team. Whether or not we we feel like we need to do that, we probably do. Um, but you know, what's the right setting, what's the right time, and they get
all that done. So it's it's an ongoing conversation. It's when we've had what we're ready to do that right now today you know we'll see you guys will be out there and we were out there for practice. Let's go ahead now and turn it over to the practice notes. As you can find up on Miami Dolphins dot com. The top news of the day as well here on the podcast, and we dive back into the first day back after a player day off, and the defense was
hungry and got after it on Friday's practice. The takeaway board that we heard Eric Roe reference earlier in the
week is definitely gonna have some added points after this practice. Interceptions, sacks, plenty of big plays for the defense before we get into the team period of the practice though, watching some of the work down on the field during the pre practice portion, I was trying to get an eye on the far field and take a look at the defensive backs go through their warm ups, and I really noticed what Nick Needham was doing. I've talked about him a
lot in the past with the smooth feet. We heard that comment about Flores and boy, you're talking about him last year. You know quote this kid from U TEP might be pretty decent, which actually means he's pretty good to end that quote. And I think he's continued to have a solid camp so far, and he definitely works hard at it. Not money balls coming his way. He was doing some good work and mirroring and pressed and
kind of getting his hands and feet aligned. He definitely puts a lot of time in an effort into this thing, and I think it showed up a little bit so far. The first week in training camp, Matt Brito was working at law on downing punts inside the five yard line, and later in practice Brita nil one dead right at the one yard line. So I really enjoy watching the
way these events unfold. You see the guy's drill a technique in the pre practice or in the individual drills, then it pays off later, just like we talked about earlier this week with Bobby McCain in that pedal transition role on the special show that debut on YouTube last night, the Training Camp Special. Little shameless plug for you guys there, go check that out on YouTube or Miami Dolphins dot com.
I kept an eye on Michael Dieter and Keaton Sutherland getting some work in before practice, as they were very animated, lots of hand gestures and simulated reps out there getting into past sets. One of our camera crew guys told me it's pretty common with this team in general that guys are engaged down there talking about different things like techniques, how to deal with certain looks of the opposition might throw at them throughout the course of practice. Communication things
like that. It goes back to what coach Flora said about finding guys who want to be here, guys who think that football is very important to them, and it shows in the practice field. They were working on the pedal and transition drill once again we talked about that with the defensive backs. They have to get dept then sprint to the sideline, and my goodness, Brandon Jones has
some closing speed in that area. I saw him flag one down from the far hash, coming all the way over to the near sideline, and it looked like he was just absolutely moving out there to get to that football. Watching the quarterbacks a little bit in the individual drills too, was throwing the ball really well, and that drill I thought, very smooth delivery, very accurate, very on time. But we'll get into the team period here in just one moment
and one thing I liked. I saw that he was throwing some passes down around the goal line on air and Shan Gailey comes over and asks him to work on a different arm angle on a particular plays basically like a slip screen where you want to get the ball out right away, anticipate a rush coming up the middle and just throw it out to the receiver right away, basically a blitz beater, and he had to kind of drop the arm angle down around the hip and just
throw it out quickly fading away from the defense. It's a quick set up, a quick side arm sling as he fades back, and he did it no problem, no questions asked. That was cool to see. Then I avert my eyes back over to the wide receivers who are working on releases up against the defensive backs. A little bit of one on one situation there always fun to watch, and Isaiah four really caught my eye once more. He's just good in all these areas of his game right now,
I think playing some really good football. Some of his releases at the line were just so smooth. You really watch him work the leverage and fight hard to get to the defensive back stacked on the route. That's where you get on top of the dB, so there's no leverage either direction. It really sets up well for the break or makes it difficult to go through the receiver if the ball is deep. He does that very very well.
One thing you also want to see, and we talked with the Vanta Parker in that week's seventeen game last year is to chase the blind spot. The cornerback can't cover what he can't see, and if you can get them into a position where their back is turned to you, their head is turned around, and you work that break and go to the blind spot, it's just gonna be bad news for the defensive back. And Ford was also doing that very well in these one on one drills.
Another player that did well in the drills and in the practice in general was rookie cornerback Noah Igbnogamy. We talked about him not having not a bad day last Wednesday, but just some guys making plays over the top of him. Preston Williams Vante Parker, two guys that have proven they can make plays in this league. Well, he bounced back
in a big way on Friday, I thought. And it started off and the one on one drills, he chucked the receiver so bad on one rep they had to restart the rep and do it all over again because he was so physical, basically ruined the entire rep from the start. That's a good thing. Parker and Jones then matched up, and man, this continues to be the heavyweight fight of training camp. So far from me. Every step, every arm bar, they challenge each other for every inch
and every blade of grass out there. It's just fun to watch those two guys go out there and compete. Going back to the drill where Nediham was working on mirroring, it paid off for him and the one on one drills. A receiver tried to put several moves on him at the line of scrimmage, but he never flinched, just stayed true to his technique, stayed in line, and really won that rep verywell. I thought that was good to see him apply again the drills to the portion where you're
going up against players in competition. Then I get my eyes back over to the offensive line and defensive line in the pit, still my favorite drill and all of football. And they were working a lot on the two on two action, executing some games up front. We've heard Flores's talk about that. We've broken down the film on that with some stunts, pick stunts, slants, twist that sort of thing, and up first was the and of the day for my money. Probably the man of practice so far off
training camp, Emmanuel Ogba. He's winning pass rush reps at an alarming rate. So far, and he's getting them on anyone and everyone that goes up against him, including some guys that are having a lot of success against pretty much everybody else they see except lines up across from them. We've seen that down here before, pass rusher who just
gets after it. The great part about that first rep I saw him was he worked inside where he dipped the upfield shoulder and used the weight of the offensive lineman to help balance him and carry him to the quarterback, and he just rode that into the backfield with a ton of strength and quickness. Next rep, I saw Solomon Kinley just stop a mack truck right in its tracks.
I didn't see the rusher. I think it might have been Benito Jones, it could have been Devon Gatcha On not on certain but it was an impressive drop of the anchor there for Solomon Kinley, who we know is a big dude and can pass protect because of that size and also his agility. And then back to the two man game, I saw a really good rep where Austin Jackson and Eric Flowers passed off a stunt optionally. Well,
it's good to see them have that communication. That's early on in campus early on in the way they communicate games up front on the offensive line up. Next had Kyle van Noy really flattened nicely on a rap up against Robert Hunt where he pushed up field and flattened that corner for where I thought would have been a sack if there was a quarterback in a real drill situation. There. Emmanuel Ogba once again gets back in there, this time working inside on Shaq Calhoun. He gets the best of
that rep with a good powerful move inside. Zack Seiler had an awesome rap where he stabbed outside then crossed over the face of Solomon Kinley. I think Zack Seiler has been a consistently good performer so far in training camp. The next driel went to Ogba and last in lined up against Jackson and Flowers once again, and it was kind of a cool looking rush move where they condensed down together and worked up field, and then Ogba ripped
off the edge and flattened. An interesting looking game up front, and once again ogbad lost and working so well together and Ogba getting in the backfield with regularity. Then we had Rae Kwon Davis, who just is impossible to get locked up. He works around that shock the initial punch of the offensive line and draws out of guys. Be because he does have that length, and he looks really really good out there executing the kind of stack them up and then shed and work around them en route
to the quarterback. Saw him do that a few times in this drill. Thought, Danny Isadora, a name we haven't talked about a whole lot here on the podcast throughout the course of training camp so far. Thought he did really well on the drill, had a couple of big wins inside as well. Then I peeked by eyes back over to the receiver and defensive backs matchup and these
guys once again are getting after it. Preston Williams had an awesome grab on a back shoulder throw in tight coverage from two h These receivers, man, they're always giving their quarterback a chance, even though the window is not open, They're gonna give you a chance to make a play. Tay Hayes got a note on him here. He competes
his butt off. He does not back down at all going up against these guys like Devonte Parker, like Preston Williams, guys that are much much bigger than him, and we saw it last year at the end of the season, allowed just three out of sixteen passes to go complete when he got into the game those last two games of the season. Byron Jones, this guy stays in phase so well he does not take the cheese and he also has the recovery speed if he does take the
cheese and gets faked out a little bit. We saw the video up of Byron Jones and Jachem Grant a juke moved from Jachem and Byron recovers and gets back into shape. Just pure athletic ability. And you see that in the on the field on practice as well in competition. These quarterbacks again, they really were testing that back shoulder throw and they hit a lot of them, but the defensive backs would come back and get some revenge later on.
In practice, I saw one play where two a shot a slant at the goal line down around the kneecaps of the receiver, and that's a purposely located ball down there. A tough catch to make, but you have to put it there because if you go behind or high, the defensive back can get in there and make a play on it. So you want the receiver to slide down to the goal line and make the catch, and he did just that with Matt Cole for a very nice
touchdown in the one on one drills. On the next play, it was a fade to Chester Rogers, and we saw the quarterbacks working on this drill with coach Brown in the middle of practice where he gives these guys so much individual instruction every throw, every rep. He's drilling these guys and really just taking advantage of every opportunity to
teach these guys something new on every play. And on this particular drill, they were set level throws where Brown would get himself into the hook zone, which were the linebackers typically line up and try to prevent in crossing routes from the receiver's out wide and he would make himself big, so the quarterbacks would have to layer the ball over that linebacker and underneath the safety and it
looked really good doing that. Now, this throw to Chester Rogers was not the same as that throw, but it's the same idea where you have to kind of layer the football over the coverage. He layers a backpile on throw that just goes over the cornerback's arm and Chester Rogers makes a fantastic catch for a touchdown in that period,
and then finally we get into the team period. The very first play, Preston Williams gets Byron on a hitch route Byron Jones, that is and just one off the line instantly, so patient in his release with explosion out of the back end. It was about seven yards pre catch and thirteen yards after the catch. He had a big day as well, Preston Williams. He landed Roberts. This
guy continues to have a huge camp. He ripped through his gap for what would have been a huge collision in the backfield, but he lightens up because he's a good teammate. He knows how to practice proper practice etiquette. But afterwards, after the play, he knew what he did, so he went over to the offensive players and where they kind of stand behind the line of scrimmage, and he let them know about it. He let them know that he was there, and I just think again that
fight is coming. Eventually with number defense, Shack Lawson gets in for a sack on the left tackle. I'm not sure who it was, but the play was extended after the sack, and once again Preston Williams makes a great catch in a crowded area. He and Parker make a habit out of that right, saving their quarterback when maybe there's not an open window, the cover just tight, they make a catch. Accordingly, it's always nice when you can get a win on defense and then come back and
still see something positive out of the offense. That's exactly what happened here. Both Lawson and Preston Williams both made plays on that particular rep, and on the next rep, both de Van got Shaw and ray Kwon Davis formed a wall in the middle to completely stifle a run play for no gain whatsoever. I've talked about this a lot on offense, and the same is true on defense. I just think it's going to be so much better on both lines, on the offensive line and in the
defensive front seven. So many resources and draft picks put into that spot, both on offense and defense. And you see it play out so far in training camp through the first week. And as I say that, Miles Gaskin shows you the wiggle and Shakespeare for a big gain up against that defensive line up front. He's so smooth the way he presses it up in there and then
can bounce in either direction. We saw it at you dub We saw it highlighted a little bit last year in that Bengals game, and now it's showing up again here in training camp every day so far. I've got Austin Jackson with another really solid day. He did really well in the one on ones and from where I could see, his side wasn't surrendering any pressure in the team period. He also had a great seal block on
that big gas can run to the outside. And we'll have one more note on Jackson here in just one moment. I'm trying to kind of go through the course of practice and go in order how things happened rather than by position. I think it's easier to kind of keep track of that way, So just bear with me. We're gonna come back to some of these players and touch on them later. The next player had to it with a conversion on third down and five. Pressure arrived, but
he kind of double clutched the football. They made a perfect throw into a tight window right at the sticks for a first down. But then the next play, a big six Brian Borders has an interception on what looked like might have been a miscommunication between two and the receiver, but borders intercepts and takes it back the other way for a touchdown. On the next play, Commu grug A Hill blows up a screenplay for a loss. He was
right in the backfield. It looked very well set up, but he knifed through there and got himself into the backfield for a tackle. We haven't heard his name a Ton yet on the podcast here in training camp, but we will hear from him later. Hear from him later in this podcast. Noah Igbnogeny had a curl route on Preston Williams where he was really physical at the top of the route and one at the top of the route and he comes down and has a pick off the hand of Josh Rosen, but he couldn't squeeze it.
It falls the turf. He has his hands on a lot of football, is very very competitive, always in good position there for the Dolphins first round draft pick there at cornerback Shack Lawson. Once again big day for him. He had to play where he resets the line screenage and forces Matt Breed it to bubble as a running back in the backfield. He impacted the game both as
a rusher and run defender all day. On Friday, Jordan Howard has had a big run every single day of practice so far and that can hinued on Friday where he pressed inside and then kicked one out between a huge gap opened up by Solomon Kinley and doesn't get contact until fifteen yards downfield. It was about to be him on Bobby McCain in the open field. I wish we could have seen that live, but of course we're not going to hit each other in practice like that
for no reason, but just an excellent jump cut. You see the vision and that lateral side to side agility, something coach students Phil talked about and the Thursday press availability with the Dolphin's running back coach, they're talking about Jordan Howard's vision and side to side agility. Next play, once again, it was Noah ig Banogamy up against Preston Williams and the ball was maybe a little bit on
the back shoulder of Preston on a slant route. But Igbo gets in there and makes a play on the football and broke it up again. He was all over the field getting his hands on plenty of balls. Then a big play alert to a big pass downfield. It was a slow developing play to Jachim Grant who was already pretty far downfield and behind the defender, and so I wasn't sure if the timing of it was off,
but he had the cornerback really well beat. Then two us under threw it, probably intentionally at least I assume it was because it was about fifty yards down the field. But team comes back and makes a play on it for a huge gainer for the Dolphins offense. Then the Dolphins have another miscommunication on the offense and the next play to tries to throw a fade, but Matt Cole runs a stop route and the ball just goes selling out of bounds over the top of both of them.
Nick need Um wasn't really good coverage there. Again, more good work from Nick need Him on this day. This is kind of the day that it was. Every good play of the offense had the defense would come back and match it, and then some and they just really got after it all day long. The team then broke it down back into individual drills. I watched some loss in an og Ba together doing some hands and long
arm work. They were really focusing on doing some positioning and placement drills and kind of trying to work their hands and arms as pass rushers. As far as a new position duo goes, these two might be my favorite right now. To the guys I'm most excited about. They've looked good all week long. On the interior of the defensive line, both Zach Seeler and ray Kuan Davis were working on the stack and shed drill, and again, this
just looks so easy for Rake one. It kind of reminds me when you put a donut on a baseball bat, then you take it off and the bat just feels a pound lighter. Everything he does looks easy. Then we come back into the team portion and Parker dials up twenty yards from Josh Rosen a pivot route where Parker caught the football and turned it up for a nice
run up the fard sideline. Again, Austin Jackson a great job to kind of draw out the force defender where he gets into a vertical set that's working straight back towards the quarterback in the backfield, and it forces the defender to come at him. He draws that bull rush and then just holds the point against that bull rush, and I think it was Shack Lawson there too, so impressive work on a veteran pass rusher to create a nice run there from Matt Brita in the run game.
Preston Williams then gets open on Byron Jones for a chunk game fifteen yards or so. Jackson again another awesome rep where he gets to his spot so quickly and stays in control of the rep. I thought he had a great day. On Friday, a landing Roberts finds himself in the backfield for another tackle for loss, an absolute
well of a camp there for forty four. Brandon Jones then comes over again to apply that drill we talked about earlier from the near hash and breaks up an attempt to Chandler Cox on a wheel route from Tua. So really nice work there from the rookie safety out of Texas. To of then finds Ricardo Lewis on what would have been a big game coming over on a cross roam, but the ball did not get squeezed, it hit the turf. He did so well, I thought too on that particular play to move suddenly in the pocket
and create a platform to throw against pressure. And I think just in general, he's really moving pretty well out there so far, so that's a good sign. Ray Kwon Davis is a guy that doesn't get moved. A lot of these interior runs when he's out there are just futile attempts. He comes off the pile after a running play up the middle for no gain, celebrating big time, so getting himself involved. Miles Gaston has another big run, stretches it outside, cuts it back and it's off to
the races. He finished the run into the end zone, so I think it was a legit touchdown from about seventy five yards away. And then we get a big play from Isaiah Ford who adjust really well to another or another intentional under thrown ball by Josh Rosen. A good throw from Rosen with Byron Jones and trail technique for about thirty thirty five yards. Jones popped up and
showed some visible frustration after that play. Then we come back to Parker versus Iigbo battling for a deep shot, and Igbo did a really awesome job to locate the football and be the first one to play it. He kind of jumped back into Vante with his head turned around, so it's not p I, but it also prevents Davante from elevating, getting after that ball and making the play like he did all season last year. Very crafty work from the rookie there. Bobby McCain comes in clean for
a sack. He blits off the offense his left side, gets himself into the backfield. He's done that before in his career, did it here again today on Friday's practice. And then we got our first red zone work of the week. And the first play was a screen pass that looked very well set up from Tua to Matt breed Up, but once again he land and Roberts beats all the offensive linement to the point and puts a
shoulder on the back. He is absolutely everywhere. The next rap Byron Jones locked up Mike Kasicky very nicely on an end line throw. His ability against some of these bigger body guys Preston Parker and Gisicky has been fun to watch. Then we try a back pylon throw to Adam Shaheim, Brandon Jones in coverage very tightly. They're no dice. He had a good day to day. The rookie, Brandon
Jones will hear from him in just one moment. Emmanuel Ogba gets in there for another stop at the line on a draw play and Commu Gruge Hill comes in and defeats a block. After the fact, Combo and Ted Carriss kind of had some pushing and shoving, but they worked it out and sorted it out afterwards. Myles Gaskin scores a touchdown from the six yard line where he
powers through a goal line tackle. Then the next play he comes back and catches a football that was off of his body on a flat route, turned it up, made a guy miss at the goal line and scored a touchdown. We get two back in the game, and the offensive personnel smite Shaheen, Cox and Howard in the game at once. That is a ton of cargo in the offensive skill spots there. And once again we have another big play from the Lands and Roberts who comes into the backfield and blows up a running back I
just wrote down He's a flat out monster. He's been awesome in training camp so far. A bas speaking of monsters, wins again with another sack off the edge. You pair that length of that first step quickness, and he really challenges offensive linemen to both be urgent but then also be privy enough to not overset and get themselves too far outside. He's just a lot to handle Rose and checks him for the red zone and throws a touchdown pass to Jachim Grant for easy five yards. He was
wide open on the play. And then we go back to the defensive side again and Kyle van Noy gets himself in there for a sack on what was a third down play to force a field goal. And that's just kind of how it was for the defense all day long. Domination on all three levels really had a big time day. We finished up with some two minute fireworks though two minute drill rather, and there were some fireworks involved in there. The very first play too, of finds Isaiah Ford for a huge game on a go
pass down about thirty yards down the field. Then the next play he tries to chem Grant up the sideline and once again Noah Igbunagay getting right into phase, staying step for step, runs the route for Jachim, presses him to the sideline and gets an interception and spikes the ball down. He has been working for that all week long and he finally got one. Rosen comes in, Sam Maguavin jumps one and nearly gets his hands on a football, but he breaks it up instead. Now on the next play,
it is an interception for Tay Hayes. An awesome play by Hayes who stayed in the hip pocket of the receiver up the seam and played it perfectly. Ball a little bit behind, but Hayes was in great position to make a play on the football. We finished up with some field goalwork and Jason Sanders is money. I don't think I've seen him miss all week. He hit the cherry picker from fifty four yards out, which is located
directly between the middle of the goal post. There about the four players that had the best practice for Emmanuel Ogba, Miles Gascony, Landed Roberts, and Preston Williams real standouts. And now we're gonna hear from three guys that talk to the media after Dolphins practice on Friday. As we hear first from Dolphins rookie defensive back in safety Brandon Jones, who talks about his versatility and how he's willing to do whatever it takes to get himself on the field
on Sundays. Open to whatever gets to me on the field as fast as possible. And whatever I could do to help the team, whether it's a slot at nicole line, at hot safety, strong safety. UM, I'm just hearing to do what I can to make the team better at the end of the day. And UM, I have been been been working, you know, kind of everywhere. You know, our coach wants us to be able to be multiple and be able to play different positions because you never know what can happen at the end of the day.
So I'm definitely been working. Kind of kind of prayer. So I talked to Brandon Jones twice this offseason, once after the draft and once for the Meet the Rookie series. He talked a lot about his off season regiment, how hard he works lifting weight, staying in condition. Here he is talking more about what he did this offseason to get ready. I'm really big on routine, So I was back in Dallas in Frisco most of the off season and kind of just stuck to a routine, the same thing,
getting as much work as possible. Um. It's kind of hard when you're by yourself, especially during the quarantine, to get around with people. You have to stay six ft apart from everybody. So my biggest thing was obviously is Conditioning was a huge importance. I know, you know, lifting, getting strong is gonna come with it, but being in you know, physical shape, conditioning wise, was super important. Especially with this heat. It's this humidity is a lot different.
I'm not used to. I'm still kind of just into it. I lose hell await every single day, so it's definitely new for me. But yeah, the biggest thing was just conditioning wise, and I think I'm in pretty good shape for the most part. And now here's Brandon talking about playing inside the box, going up against pulling guards, guys that are much bigger than him to have him outweighed, and how he can bats that and uses what he can do best to help himself execute regardless of what
job he's asked to do on this defense. You know, I really just kind of use my advantages and use my strengths and go get them obviously, you know strength, while as soon as I know in my head, as soon as they get me locked on, I'm done for. So I'm gonna try to do as much wiggle room
using my speed, you know, get down. I'm shorter, a lot shorter than a lot of them, so I'm gonna get down as low as I can, try to make them bend, but uh, you know those points, those times are gonna come, you know, and screen passes or anything like that. You got guards, tackles pulling to come get you. Biggest staying our coaches to just stay alive at the end of the day. You hear him talk about staying
alive for any rookie. Part of staying alive is keeping your head above water with regards to the install of the defensive scheme what he's asked to do. Here's Brian John's talking about the first week so far, learning this playbook and getting this defense down, kind of getting comfortable
in knowing knowing the next step. I think I'm really good at knowing once once we get a formation, what the call is and stuff like that, but kind of getting on the next level of knowing this gut motions, this is what we gotta go to, and just the overall important importance of fundamentals and techniques, uh that stuff you're planning a gets the best of the best each week, and you know, a bad step or anything like that
can win or lose a game. So you've got to be very very critical of your fundamentals and techniques and just kind of knowing ahead of time what's next to happen, if if this may occur in the situation, and from one rookie to another talking about the acclamation of coming into the NFL and learning this league in a weird offseason. Here is Malcolm Perry talking about the challenges of his rookie season so far through one week of padded practices.
You know, it's a different level than college, obviously, so the attention to detail is so much higher. And uh, you know, I'm trying to trying to catch on as fast as I can and seeing things after the ball snapped, getting in the right spot and making sure you know, I'm going I need to be to making play successful. Um, it's just the little things right now and trying to trying to learn every day and learn from my mistakes and get better the next day. Hey, what's called on, Malcolm?
Good to see you again, man. Um. Last time we talked, we went over your kind of daily schedule on daily routine there when you were at Navy. Now that you've been here at camp for a few weeks, I'm rious. How would you say that experience at college prepared you for the daily grind of the NFL. UM. I like to say it helped a little bit. Um. You know, I think my days are just as busy, but filled with football and not not any military stuff. So um, it prepared me in the aspect of, you know, having
a big workload. Um, but it's all football, so um it's a little better in that, in that never go And the part of that you can't see on a podcast format obviously, is that Malcolm had a big smile on his face when he talked about the schedule being just as rigorous, but it's all football all the time,
and he quite likes that. We'll finish up here with Malcolm talking about learning different positions across the league, across the offense, and how he is approaching that and taking all the advice he can get from the veteran guys here in camp. Um, I was extremely excited. You know, any opportunity to touch the field at any position, I'm I'm all for it. Um. So just getting out there, um, learning from the guys on the team that you know, play the same position. Um, you know, mirror in there.
I'm seeing what they're doing, ask them questions and you know, trying to learn everything from them, their mistakes, what they do right and stuff like that, and try to music tone have been. And we finish up with our third newcomer to the Miami Dolphins this year, new linebacker Calmu grug A Hill. He's a veteran, he's been in this league, He's played under coach Flora's before. Let's go ahead and hear from Cammu on this first question about the video
on two a tonguas. Was it Snapchat or Instagram? I don't know, but the two of them singing together. And then I had to follow up question about how the relationship with him and the rest of the guys are going so far in the building down here in Miami. I mean, I love it, man, I can't even lie to you. It's it's awesome, you know. Um, For for a long time, I've been the only guy, um being
from home, being so far far away from home. So having someone you know here with me that that kind of grew up the same way as me, it's awesome, you know. And we get to talk and joke a lot about how we grew up. And you know, it's even funnier because our high school even though he's a lot younger than me, but our high school's arrival high schools, so you know, we get to joke about that a little bit. Um. It's it's awesome. I love it good. So that was my question too about the video with
you and two. I won't comment on your guys vocal talents, but I am I am a little bit curious that you guys are getting along so well. Is that kind of the same vibe you have in the locker room in general? And if so, why do you think this team's personalities are meshing so well so early? Yeah, definitely, I think you know this, This locker room is a young team. Um, everyone's hungry, everyone's um coming in, you know,
and and wanting to work. And you know, I think it's it's it's easy when everyone's so young and around the same age and stuff like that for for the team to kind of have a lot in common. And it's just a real friendly, family oriented locker room. And speaking of family, next, you're gonna hear common you say that no one in his family has left the islands of Hawaii since he did it, basically, and it makes me wonder, why would you ever leave Hawaii? If you
didn't have to. Yeah, Um, it's well, so always out in Philly for the last four years, which is nothing like back home, So being here is is definitely u you know, very similar. And you know, I was even in um, you know, drive around and I'm just like that kind of looks a little bit like how back home looks, you know, in certain certain areas. Um, and I just you know, I just love the tropical weather, warm weather. It's hard to beat. So it's not home,
but I mean it's pretty close. And we finish up with a question about playing in this defense compared to what he played in Philadelphia and that defense, which we know have a lot of differences because we were here with Matt Burke a few years back and now Brian Flora's in Miami. Here's Commo on his early impressions of the Dolphins defense under coach Flora's and coach Boyer. I think it's it's very different, but I love it and
and it's a big reason why I'm even here. Um. You know, there's so many different things that we can do with with this defense, and it and it and it you know, it really keeps everyone very diverse and asks everyone to do multiple things. So UM, I mean that's that's exciting for me and and I'm it's very different, but I'm getting used to it and I'm loving it. And one more comment here from Comma about playing the past on defense has passed as a safety and moving
up to linebacker later in his career. Just from my view of things is, you know, you go into a game, teams, teams are passed in the ball most times a game, you know, and it's um, I think there's a huge emphasis on unpassed and UM, you know, passing down so UM, I wouldn't say that it's more important, but I think guys are being asked to do more than you know, if you're not seeing the typical just you know, two hundred sixty pound backers anymore that are on the field
for all three downs. So and our audio kind of faded out there towards the end, so I do apologize for that. But you can find these press conferences in their entirety up on Miami Dolphins dot com.
