we have a special guest. It's going to be joining us. But I wanted to start off this hour talking about pollution and how error pollution can absolutely impact our health and our wellness. In fact, one out of every three people live near dangerous high levels of air pollution. We know that more than one hundred and twenty million Americans, a third of the country here in the US, live in areas with dangerous levels of air pollution. That's what
a new report is suggesting. Now, let's face it, most people are oblivious to air pollution and unless they go out and there's a cloud that literally hits them in the face and they start choking and coughing as though they were breathing in just straight away from the exhaust of the tailpipe of a car. It really doesn't exist. It's just not plausible for them to even think about
it. Unless you come over the hill of a major metropolitan area, let's say Los Angeles or Denver or other cities that I have been, and you see that sort of brown cloud hovering in the distance. Then you go, oh, my gosh, look at the differences, look at all that pollution in the air. And then finally you get an idea that there is pollution. There is such a thing. Because pollution, you know, you hear about it, you read about and you, oh, well, you know
it's not me. I don't I don't feel any pollution. I'm breathing just fine. It's small amounts of pollution over time, is what we're talking about, the cumulative effect. And between two nineteen and two twenty twenty one, cities on the West Coast, particularly in the state of California, ranked among
the worst areas for ozone pollution and fine particulate matter and air pollutants. Now, I know the state of California has been trying to do it clean up, and they've done a pretty good job of cleaning up the air, but there's still problems in these major cities where there's a lot of traffic a lot of cars. Particulate pollution refers to these tiny pollutants from sources like factories, power plants, vehicles, wildfires, while ozone small comes from vehicles, factories,
and other in sterialized sources. The American Lung Association their State of Air program. Their report also found that roughly a hundred and three one hundred and three million people in the US lived in the one hundred and twenty four counties that earned the grade F for ozone small F one hundred and three million people. That's what is a third of our population. Air pollution is linked to the development of many things or the exacerbation of certain conditions like asthma, allergies,
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and even lung cancer. It is especially dangerous for young people whose lungs are still developing and could suffer from some problem as a result of pollution, including asthma. Particulates or particles exhausted from vehicles and factories can irritate our lungs, triggering inflammation and a reduction of lung function. And again, this stuff doesn't drop you overnight. It's cumulative. It just
sort of ticks away at you little by little. The damage they cause. These pollutants also raise the risk of infection. People with asthma are particularly at risk from air pollution, which can trigger a potentially fatal allergic reaction, depending
on where they're at and how much they take in. For this particular report from the American Lung Association, the twenty fourth published by the American Lung Association, researchers looked at fine particles and ozone pollutants from about a third of the US counties. They analyze air quality data from nearly one thousand counties across the United States, covering more than two thirds of our whole population in the US.
Fine particles or suit that's soot, I should say soot, are tiny particles in the air released by wildfires, woodburning stoves, coal fired power plants, diesel engines, and other sources. They may not be visible to the human eye, they are they're not. Ozone pollutants, on the other hand, are also released by cars, power plants, refineries, and power stations, but have reached are reacted rather to sunlight, causing what we refer to
as smog. Inhaling them is the equivalent of giving your lungs sort of a sunburn, depending on how much you're breathing in and the concentration of that smog. And it sounds a sunburn in the lungs. That sounds a little strange. Well. Areas were given one of six grades for their air quality, from good to very, unhealthy and hazardous based on recordings over up to a previous year. The data when they combined a grade in certain counties from A
to F based on the number of poor quality days that they had. The report also found that nearly sixty three million people live in counties where air pollution is getting worse and they are at a higher risk of daily air pollution spikes. In fact, they have these air alerts now that are on television radio. It's we're in a high spike area right now, run for it. Well, in short, it can cause air pollution, itchiness, coughing, sneezing, weeason, you know who it is. And some people are again
oblivious to it. They don't know. So what do you do. You can't get rid of and go back to the you know, the horse and buggy day and beyond. You have to find a way to compensate for that. Most of the air pollution we get into is indoors, about ninety percent of it, and then we go outdoors we get hit again. What do you do? What do you do to keep you damage from occurring in your lungs to the DNA and your lungs and the vital organs that can develop these
health related problems or make the problems that you have worse. Well, how about starting with insulating the cracks in the doors and the windows of your home or your business so that the air filters that you have within those places where we spend about ninety percent of our time is as clean as it can be
internally. Or how about purchasing a four stage HEPA filter system, which becomes less and less expensive these days, and put that in your home to clean the airspace at least have clean air while you're indoors, which is where you spend most of your time. You know what you can also do? There are certain plants that you can actually purchase and place in your home or business that actually reduce indoor air pollution. It's true. The rubber plants. These
rubber plants you can buy these at these nurseries. Snake plant, the Boston fern alo vera philodendron, and there's a bunch of other ones that I just off the top of my head. I remember reading about when they are in the environment which you're breathing, they are actually as a plant, cleaning the
air for you. So you have ways of counteracting air pollution. It's gonna be hard for you to deal with it outside unless you live, let's say, in the state of Havaii, which has probably the cleanest, if not the cleanest air on the planet, or at least in the United States. But who's And a lot of people are saying, well, yeah, okay,
so I'll just move to Hawaii. That's not possible. Well, okay, fine, you can't move to Hawaii, but you can certainly get cleaner air within your home or business if you control your business environment by making sure that the air is not coming in from the outside, you're cleaning the filter
systems within your home or business. If you have the business and you can control it, you can also, of course put these various plants, and I'm sure online somewhere there's a list of these plants, some of them I mentioned that you can purchase that you can put in to your home or buy one of these four stage help of filter systems. And I said that Leslie, based on my experience with other people who have had eye surgery, including cataract surgery, which I also talked about last hour, I ran into one of my friends recently, Leslie, at a symposium in California, a pharmacist friend of mine, and as I walked up to him, I looked at him as said something seriously wrong.
His left eye was just looking so strange, and it was walking are coming out of it, and he was kind of dripping, and he was kind of he had a handkerchief in his hand, he was kind of drawing it off. And said, what's what's going on? What's wrong? Are you all right? He goes, well, not really, I had cataract surgery and now I'm blind In my eye where they attempted to have cataract surgery. I felt so bad for him, and so my wife was standing there
also and we were just a gas at that. And I want to get into that with you today because I think a lot of people are they're they're believing that it's it's a guarantee that if they have any surgery, cataract or otherwise, it's gonna everything's gonna be just rosy and fine. And yes, there are people who have cataract surgery and you have to admit this, and
they have great outcomes and they have better vision from it. But I'll tell you what, It really gets your attention when you know somebody like this who had, you know, limited eyesight, but at least he had eyesight. But now he's completely lights out in that one eye. It's over. He's got one eye. Now that's the end of it. Yeah, it's terrifying, and it does happen. Fortunately, it is a small percentage, but
it is not risk free. And we only have two eyes, you know, and there is a terrible trauma that is going on for the eye during that procedure and depending on your state of health, and this is not something that's discussed very often prior to surgery. If you have an inflammatory condition, you have diabetes, the healing responses are compromised in the eye, you're not as likely to have a good outcome. But is that question explored prior to
surgery not traditionally No, And so yes, there are risks. I believe that cataract surgery they've done some incredible improvements over the last five years. Absolutely, But these are our eyes, and there are so many wonderful options for healing and preventive treatments and even addressing existing conditions that are not toxic medications and are not surgical risk risky procedures, And so you know, it's it's I of course I would. eye, you know, leads to other conditions because it's stressing the eye, it's pulling the pH out of whack, and so all of a sudden, the healing and repair mechanisms in the eye no longer work efficiently. So when people get a retinal detachment a year later, nobody's correlating it to the fact
that they had cataract surgery a year ago, right right exactly.
