Transcript

And now your host for Morongo Casino Dodgers on de Tam kays Hi, everybody, and welcome in to Morongo Casino Dodgers on Deck on this Thursday afternoon hot here in southern California. The Dodgers looking to get hot fifty five and thirty eight on the season, first place atop the NLS, but they've lost back to back games in Philadelphia and they're looking to salvage this series this afternoon and Sentce is a big ballpark. Anthony Bondo will be the opener, followed by

Landon Neck first pitch coming up at three to zero five. Coming up over the next hour here on Marongo Casino Dodgers on Deck, we'll hear from the Dodger manager, Dave Roberts why he is elected to go with an opener today. We'll dive deeper into this pitching matchup David Vasago's one on one with Eduardo Perez. Shortly, we'll check in with Kirsten Watson. In just a few minutes, we'll here from Rick Monday and Tim Neffett at the Galpin Motors Broadcast

booth. Well, yesterday Gavin Stone was given the ball, hoping to get the Dodgers back on track yesterday. He'd pitch into the fifth inning and give him four runs on nine hit, strikeout three. But it was a rocky starts for Gavin Stone first battery, faced home run Stale. Matt's major league debut last year here in Philadelphia against the Phillies. It was on the third of May. Pitch on the watch, Schwarber hits a high fly ball deep to left, going back Vargus. He's at the track. It's gone.

A lead off home run for Kyle Schwarber and the Phillies on the board, it's one nothing home run number eighteen per Swarber. Kyle Schwarber goes deep to left center field, first batter in the bottom of the first inning. Phillies just like that led one to nothing. They'd lead to nothing after two. Dodgers finally got on the board in the fourth inning, Miguel Rojas and RBI fielder's choice, scoring t Key k Hernandez. That made it a two to

one game. The Dodgers would tie it in the fifth show Hey Otani and RBI single scoring Kik They were all up at two, but that didn't last long bottom of the fifth inning, Former Dodger trade Turner Enfield single that scored with Maryfield that gave the Phillies a three to two lead. They tack on one more in the bottom of the fifth to go up for to two. The Dodgers had something going the seventh, but couldn't get that hit. They needed to push in and run. They finally did in the eighth. Credit

for an RBI. He is twentieth of the season. He swings in reps it down the left field line. That's a base hit pie. Hezel touch third here he comes into the score. The rounding first and heading for second is roe hash and he is off the base and out. It is four to three, four to three on the row hoas RBI single. He gets thrown out a second. Looks like they got pushed off the bag there at second base. They reviewed it. Nope, they said the call will stand.

The Dodgers unable to get any more runs. The rest of the way is the Phillies hang on for a four to three win. Gavin Stone gets the loss. He falls to nine and on this season. The Dodgers had nine hits in the game. They were four for eleven runners in scoring position, but stranded six runners some key runners left on base there in the seventh and eighth INNY as they lose again in Philadelphia two straight. They're now fifty

five and thirty eight. Final game of this three game series from Citizens Bank Park is coming up at three to zero five. Dodgers looking to get back on track before heading to Detroit to wrap up the first half of the season. Dodgers Land and Knack will get the bulk innings. Anthony Bondo will be the opener. With more. We head out to the Galpin Motors broadcast booth as we say hello and good afternoon to Rick Monday and Tim Nefferck, guys,

Tim, thanks very much. Third and final game in Philadelphia Citizens Bank Park, just around the corner of the Phillies. First team in Major League Baseball to get the sixty wins this year. Eight and a half up, they are on the Atlanta Braves in the National League East. They picked up a full game last night. Meantime, the Dodgers didn't lose any ground. They are still seven and a half ahead of the Pandres fifty five and thirty eight. However, the Dodgers are in a bit of a downturn at this

point in time. They've lost three straight. During that time, they've scored only six runs. They've lost seven of their last eleven games, and trying to find a way to stave off a sweep here in Philadelphia and get back in the win call well, and last night again it was a ballgame that they hit a little bit better than they did in the opening game of the series, but it still comes down to you need to make plays. A

couple of plays they did not make. But starting pitching has really become an issue, and losing seven to the last eleven Dodgers' starting pitchers are zero and five with an ERA above nine in that period of time. That's got to

turn things around and turn around in a hurry. But it's going to be a little bit more challenging tonight because Landon Nack was originally scheduled to start, and now we're finding out it's going to be Anthony Bonda who will actually be the quote unquote opener, and then Nac will enter the ballgame at what point,

we're not exactly certain. And it's been a while since Bonda has opened a game, was when he was with Tarni in July of twenty twenty two, so it's been almost two seasons since he started a game right from the beginning rather than coming out of the bullpen. Yeah, and go want away at all at the feet and is starting pitching the Bullpen's been absolutely terrific. But here's the other part. From an offensive standpoint. In this series,

for example, the Dodgers are zero to two. They're four for twenty two, a one to eighty two batting average with runners in scoring position. What about the Phillies in this series, they're hitting at four to twelve. Now, if we look at the last five games, Dodgers are hitting below one sixty with runners in scoring position. Yes, there has been a void in the bottom part of the lineup. Starting to see some bats swinging much much

better. But the Dodgers, they need to put the foot on the accelerator and put some runs up on the board. Keeping an eye on show. Hey, oh, Johnny had another two hit game last night, also stole a base. If he steals a base tonight, that would be five straight games for him and the last Dodger to steal a base in five straight Matt kemp in two thousand and eight. But Otani also sitting on career home run number one, ninety nine, and he hopes to do some damage at the

top of the order and hoping to do that. And this is game number ninety four, and for the Dodgers, they will fly to Detroit tonight. They have three more games and then well you start to look at going back to the homestand and the All Star break gets closer and closer. But the Dodgers, until that break arrives, they've got to go much much harder than what they've been able to really accomplish over the last week and a half. Tough top of the order for the Phillies, for any pitching staff to have

to handle, especially now. Bryce Harper back in there. He took last night off with a bruise left hand, but back in there hitting third, Trey Turner hitting three forty five, right at the top, Kylee Swarbur, he had another leadoff home run, his thirty ninth career leadoff home run last night, and then Alec Ball will hitting the cleanup spot at third base. He's going to be in the home run derby, going to be in the home run derby, and for Tiascar, Hernanersy will be representing the Dodgers in

that Derby. He's going to bat in the four spot. If we look at the bottom third to tonight's lineup, Autman will be in center. He'll bat seventh, Chris Taylor gets to start at third base, Gavin Lux will bat ninth, then play at second. And so you've got four left handed hitters in that lineup tonight against Aaron Nolan, who has had real good success in particular, throws a lot of fastballs away. The Dodgers don't extend the

strike zone. Dodgers trying to end their three game losing streak and salvage a game during this three game series here in Philadelphia. Tim all right, thank you guys, as we get you down the first pitch. Dodger fans, get your game day meal on a Shakey's Pizza parlor, or you're in Shaky's Pizza, Chicken and Mojo's right now at Shakys dot com. Coming up here on Dodgers on Deck, we'll hear from the manager, Dave Roberts. We'll

check in with David Va say we'll dive deeper this pitching matchup. We'll hear from Erardo Perez. Got a national perspective on this Dodgers team. The NL West of the National League. But up next you're Tani Rewine and we'll visit with Kirsten Watson. He leads up to first pitch from Philadelphia Dodgers and Phillies. Thanks for being with us, Tim Kass, Los Angeles Dodgers Audio Network. This Morongo Casino, Dodgers on Dodgers on deck y'all on the official home

of LA Dodgers Baseball. Dodgers in Phillies final game from Citizens Bank Park. Anthony Bonda will be the opener, followed by Landon Nacko will take a lot of the innings. After that, Aaron Nola on the mountain for Philadelphia, looking for his eleventh winn of this season. First pitch coming up at three oh five. This is the every one last night did not sit very well

with those guys down a little club house. First ball swinging, Otani bangs it into right field and the first pitch of the ball game is hitting the right for a bay. Shit. He is just an inning and a third away from tyme for the most number of innings he's ever pitched in a season, which is ninety nine point one. Pitcher strike Otani breaks per second. He's in with a stolen base first in third, one out pitch to Otani from Sanchez, Twinsen hits it in the left field. That's a base hit,

Hernandez's store and tie the game. Big turn around second base for Barnes. He manages to get back with the head first dive, but Showhy with his second hit of the ball game is sixty sixth run banded in makes it a two to two game. Shoe. Otani goes two for four last night with the RBI single you just heard, including a stolen base as well.

Now twenty two stolen bases on this season. The Otani Rewind brought to you by Eto antoy All Jutch Pant's number one Green Tea and the Tea that show Hey Otani loves and drinks a Bilia local Diso stores, Amazon and eto in dot Com. That's it O e N dot Com. This is Kirston's Corner with Kirston Watson. Hek Kirson now joins us from Citizens Bank Ballpark. Anthony Bonda gets the job as the opener of Kirston. What happened to landon thatck? Are we going to see him? Yes, We're absolutely going to see

him. So he's going to take down the bulk of the innings. Right behind Anthony, Dave was saying that the plan Anthony Bond is just to take down the top of the order. He can get through an efficient one, two, three, get the team into the second inning, give Landonak a clean start for that that is what the hope is. He said, he just really liked Anthony, just the matchup against the Phillies top of the order, and he also wanted to put Land in a situation so that he could

continue to be successful. And the hope is, you know, the conversation with him is always get out there, go as long as you can, for as hard as you can. So if he can take down three solid innings, if that's six solid innings, he just wanted to put him in a situation with Bryce Harper being back in the lineup so that he was not facing them, him and the other top guys as many times as if he was starting the game tonight. Makes sense. Here's some brought to you by

As the Dodgers head to Detroit for the final three games before the All Star Break, I saw some tbds maybe on the horizon. What's going on? Yep, So tomorrow the plan is for James Paxton. Then on Saturday, Dustin Robleski's going

to make his second career start. As much as he feels good coming out of the last one, he said, he wants better results and so he's hoping to get back out there the nerves of your major league debut it's a thing of the past, and hopefully find some success in Detroit. And then even for Sunday, the planned sounds like it's going to be a traditional bullpen game. I think it depends on what the usage is for Ryan Yarborough,

if he will be available to take down the bulk of the innings. We should all hope and pray that that's the case, because for the Tiger side, it sounds like that's going to be a bullpen game as well. So you know, we get through the first half of the season for a double bullpen game. Some weather potentially in the area. They just might make it a hard ending to our first half of the year. Guys, that's good Kirston. We appreciate it. We'll check in with you after the game.

Still to coming here on Dodgers on Deck, we'll dive deeper into this bitching matchup. David vasagoes one on one with it. Wardo Perez, what up next? We'll get you to report and we'll hear from the manager himself, Dave Roberts as we lead you up to Dodgers and Phillies. First pitch of three oh five. I'm Tim Kas's Los Angeles Dodgers Audio Network. This is Marongo Cassino Dodgers Hunters game on your home for LA Dodgers Baseball. Marongo Casino

Dodgers on Deck continues on this Thursday afternoon Maronggo Casino Resort. It spawning Grand Slam four Good Times Dodgers and Philadelphia final game of this three game set. We'm a Moto walker bueler Michael Grove, Ryan Brazier, Clayton Kershaw, Max Munsey, Bruce Dark, Gronder, Alt, Joe Kelly, and of course Destin may On the sixty day il recovering from an arm injury. All right, let's head back to Philadelphia. Get the pregame. Thought to the skipper anything questions for Dave? Dave? Can you just describe Dave? Can you talk about

the pressure in the dugouts with Dave Robbers? Dave? Just with the pitching plan today, you've got Anthony Bond who's going to have the start as the opener. What do you like about just him against the top of their order and how that can set up for land and Act today it's twofold. Obviously, I think Anthony gives a really good chance against those top three guys. You know, he'll take down the first inning, hopefully it's three and not

anymore, and then Landon will be right there behind him. And I think also just to you know, give land In a better chance to get some length and not have to face those top three guys three times, I think is an advantage. So communication has been clear to both guys, and you know, after that then you know expect to deploy our our high leverage guys

and win a baseball game. All right, there's Dave Roberts talking about the pitching situations that it's clear for both guys what the roles are going into this game. Brought to you by Service Titan. Joining Tim kats on Dodgers on, I accept everybody for who they are. This is Dodger insider David Basil. Paul Skeens is the talk of baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He's got eighty nine strikeouts through eleven careers starts, gonna go to the All Star Game. It's a little while ago.

He's working on a no no through seven innings and they took him out. Wouldn't we all would have liked to celebrate Paul Skins even more for throwing a no hitter. This is where overthinking gets in the way of player moments and the pageantry of the sport, of any sport. I understand about trying to be careful with a pitcher like Paul Skeen's a rookie pitcher throwing more innings than he ever has before. But Tim, come on, what number tells us

that Paul Skins or any other pitcher is going to break? Is it ninety nine pitches? Is it ninety eight pitches? Is it one hundred and one pitches? We all wanted to see Paul Skins go for this no hitter, and the facts are, you know, no matter what teams do to try to quote protect their pictures. Seemingly they're all getting hurt, and seemingly eventually

they will all need Tommy John surgery. So you can't convince me if Paul Skens goes to the distance to try to go for that no hitter and it's reasonable pitch count, that he was going to get hurt or he was not going to get hurt. Whatever is going to happen is going to happen to him, and taking him out of that no hitter was disgraceful. And I'm I've been on the record when the Dodgers have taken guys out of possible no

hitters. I've been not on board with that, going back to Minnesota a few years ago when the Dodgers took Clayton Kershaw out of a no hitter and I it might have even been a perfect game back then. Did that stop Clayton Kershaw from having shoulder surgery this past December? Nope, there's no proven

science. Dodger fans and an answer listening experience by driving a Ford, if there's one thing we like, it's choice, says buying yours with the four f one to fifty gas hybrid or all electric tough this mark, Yeah, it can only be an f one to fifty. What are the Dodgers gonna do this weekend? Dave I saw TBD. Now we know Robleski's coming back in Detroit to make a start. What's going on? Well, it's not just about the end of this first half, tim, but what are the

Dodgers going to do after the All Star break? They got a seven game homestand against the Red Sox and San Francisco Giants. Tyler Glass now by the way, is not eligible to return until during that Giant Series, and there's still some question about whether or not he'll come back. So you don't have Tyler Glass now, by the way, with the new minor league schedule, when there's an All Star break in Major League Baseball, there's an All Star

break in Minor League Baseball. So Bobby Miller cannot go out on that rehab start or make us start in Oklahoma City that Dave Roberts was talking about. So you're not going to have Bobby Miller at least for that first series and maybe not for that Giant Series. So that's my question. What are the Dodgers going to do? Not just between now and Sunday, I think they've got that figured out with the break, But how about when you come out

of the break, how are you going to manage that? Lots of questions the second half of the season. Thanks TV, We'll check back in with you. Coming up here on Dodgers on Deck, We'll get your Dodger Magical Moment. Dodgers Phillies from Citizens Bank Park, first pitch at three oh five. I'm Tim Kas's Los Angeles Dodgers Audio Network. As we were saying, yes, is Marongo Casino Dodgers on Deck on the official home of LA Dodgers

Baseball. Dodgers and Phillies. Anthony Bonda is the opener. Landon Neck will follow final game from Citizens bi Part first pitch at three to five. Who it's for the Hawfeing Magical Moment. Bitch Magical Magical presented by Hawvey Hot Jobs. All right, it's the twenty nine year anniversary nineteen ninety five All Star Game in Texas. It's going back to Arlington next week. Dalo Nomo became the first Japanese player to play in the Midsummer Classic and quite a side on

the mount. Who would have figured Jdeo Nomo last year pitching in Japan, had five no decisions, then went six and zero in June. I had a want two picks to walk down here. It is waved that in Mexican. Boy, I tell you if you've got the fourth ball here and you've also got the twilight and you've got a strip of sunlight between the mound and

the play a teen out of six team. So that's only the third time all year long they've caught a runner and that goes Martinez director the lexus won to right field and on the run is Tony Gwin to make the cash. So it's a three up, three down inning. With some help from gwyn Nomo sets the Americ can lead down in order. We'll go to the third at Arlington. No scores, Al Michaels and Jim Palmer on the call. Los Angeles Dodgers Audio network is Morongo Casino, Dodgers on, Dodgers on Deck, y'all on the official

home of La Dodgers, Baseball, Dodgers and Phillies. Anthony Bonda is the opener, and Landon Neck will follow. Dodger fans start your future at California Community College. Financial aid's available to help you with tuition, books, and sometimes even the rent. Yeah, it's time to take that next big step. Classes can fill it quickly. So enrolled today, I can go to college dot com and now joined by David Maas saying, here's La Dodger,

your broadcaster and World Series champion Dodger Brick Monday. Well, Reck, the Dodgers are looking for a happy flight to Motown. But they certainly have got to get better pitching than what we've seen the first two games. Yeah, there's no question about it. But it's not just the pitching, David, Although you can say, hey, what about the starting pitching. They're zero for five as far as decisions, and in those five games, their eer

collectively is over nine. So they've given up a lot of runs forty nine runs in forty eight and two thirds innies pitched. But the Dodgers overall, you know, they dropped now seven of the last eleven games, and they've got to get more firepower as far as not hitting home runs. I'm talking about firepower as far as coming up with base hits with runners and scoring positions.

You know, the one positive thing. You look at this Dodger bullpen, and they had really been worked hard because the starting pitching has not really extended itself for a number of innings to begin with. But the Dodgers' bullpen has the best earn ren average on the road of any team in Major League Baseball. The Dodgers on the road, they're two point four to seven ERA. The major league average for bullpens on the road is over four runs a

game. So the bullpen has really i mean, you talk about being spot on, that's exactly what they've done. And some of these guys, like today's opener Anthony Benda, they were not household names and the Dodgers have turned them into serviceable relief pitchers. Yeah, and here's kind of the puzzling thing for today's game. So they haven't bonded lefty. He's going to start.

And if you look at it and say, oh, I see what the Dodgers are doing something that we see now opposing teams due to the Dodgers. And I say that because the Dodgers have in the first three hitters. You have two lefties Otani Will Smith is in there tonight and then Freddie Freeman. We've seen ball clubs use the so called opener with a lefty to try and get two of the three hitters to start the game off for the Dodgers. So here's the story with the Phillies. Schwarber leading it off. He's a

left handed hitter. Trey Turner's right handed. Rice Harper is also left handed. So if you have Bonda, he's facing to open up the ball game two of the three hitters. Here's the fly in the ointment. However, if you look at what Schwarber has done, he's actually hit better against left handers then he has against right handers. In fact, for right handers he's hitting just one eighty four lefties he's hitting three forty one, So that theory

kind of goes out the window. Harper's also hit lefties very well. Taoscar Hernandez is going to be in the Home run Derby rick. The rules seem to change every year. I mean, we don't have a revised rule book, but ta Oscar wants in and he got his wish and they are going to change the rule book. They will go head to head the ten to begin with, and then they'll have the finals. Pitch count and a time limit will change and vary from the qualifying to the to the final round.

You know who else is in the home run Derby a little different. It's the high school Home run Derby and you've talked about it a lot. As Dino ebles oldest son, Brady, He's going to be in that as well. Dino will be headed to Houston as well, I should say to Arlington, and it's going to be a big, big deal. There's a lot to look at on both ends of the spectrum, the high school home run

contest and also with the MLB and Tiascar Hernandez. It's going to be interesting, David to see if he does what the Phillies were doing a little earlier today they removed the batting cage and their representative in the home run Derby was

hitting with his pitcher. That's going to pitch to him without the batting cage over the top of him here this afternoon, Well, deno Ebel will have his arm ready to go because he's thrown to his son Brady like you mentioned, Rick, and he also will be throwing at ta Oscar Hernandez and Tao said that they are going to practice when the team gets to Detroit, so you may see him practice the Derby exactly, David so And meanwhile, you

just keep practicing too, Okay, thanks a lot. Rick, can't wait for you to throw me BP one day where a helmet boll Okay, thanks a lot. Thanks for the warning. We'll send it back to you in the studio. Tim, all right, thanks a lot, guys. Dodgers Baseball is brought to you by Speedy Cash, official sponsor of every LA Weekend. Well, this is Morongo Cassino Dodgers Hunter on your home for LA Dodgers Baseball, Dodgers and Phillies final game of this three game series. Anthony Bonda is the opener. Landon Neck will follow first pitch coming up

Children's Hospital LA rank number one in all of California for pediatric care. Find the right doctor at CHLA. Or and now what will likely be vasse fielding insults from a Dodger player. It's an engagement of endearment. This is high and tight. We're joined right now by one of the best voices in

all of Major League Baseball. You see him on ESPN, part of the Sunday Night Baseball package, and that is the one and only Eduardo Perez. Eduardo, thanks a lot for the time. Appreciate it, Oh, appreciate you having me. This is always an honor and hello to the fans out there. I'm using a little Latino side of me where every time we do radio in Spanish, we always have to say hello to los della aldientthis. Oh I'm doing that in English. I love it. I loved it.

I joke that you came into the radio booth and Rick Monday thought you were there for him, but you weren't. I'm always or for Rick. Let's let's be real, it's it's you know what though, growing up in my baseball of me watching baseball and really observing it came in the seventies and in the eighties obviously, and and for me it was always Reds Dodgers, right, that was the rivalry in the National League West. And obviously my dad

played for the Cincinnati Reds, the big red machine, Tony Perez. And when the Dodgers came into town, I mean, Sparky always told us in spring training, he said, remember when the Dodgers come into town, you are yelling in the front. So it was myself, it was Pete Rose Junior, it was Ken Griffy Junior, it was Tommy Hums Junior. It was my brother that one time before that he got traded le May. Before

he got traded, it was Le May Junior as well. So yeah, it's it's it's an honor to be able to for me to see the guy that I grew up watching and now being able to have conversations and learning from him and as our guest. He's part of ESPN's baseball coverage not only on Sunday nights and Wednesday nights, but also during the All Star Break and Home Run Derby, and we found out Eduardo ta Oscar Hernandez got his wish. He is going to be part of the Home Run Derby and he's bringing the

sunflower seeds be ready, you know he is. Look. I remember when Taskar was with the Toronto Blue Jays and Tasker pulled me aside because I was. I was, I had just done I already had done the home run derby. I've done it. I don't know if you know this in three different languages already, so I did not know that. Yeah, English, Spanish and stack cast I call that a different wo I agree with you.

I agree with you. We had to learn this language right since since twenty fifteen, I was, I had the honor of having Jason Benetti on one side and having Mike Petriello on the other and I was there and I learned so much about how to speak the Stackcast language. I think it's really important, especially the way that it has developed in the ten short years, you

could say, because of its inception in twenty fifteen. So to have ta Oscar come up to me, I remember this in Dunedin, Florida, during the Toronto Blue Jay spring training and he said, I want to be in the home run derby. I said, you're gonna get your chance. I'm gonna push for you. I'm going to push for you. I don't know if I have any juice doing it, but I'm going to push for you.

And now it's his time. Now it's his opportunity. And when a player wants to do it, those are the dangerous players in this in this competition. You look at Pete Alonzo, He's wanted to do it, he's won it, he believes that he's the best power hitter for this tournament. And the way that it's set up right now, I don't know who's going to win it, and ta Oscar has a great chance of doing it, just like a just you're gonna have other players. And then Gunnar Henderson has

a great chance and opportunity of doing it. Bobby Witt Junior has a great chance. You know. Jose Ramirez, that's an interesting one because he's done it before. Now well he do it from the right side or left side. So switch hitters are really tricky on how they're able to compete. Adleie Rutchman last year was a switch hitter, did a nice job from the left side. Try to switch over to the right. Wasn't the same? Do

you have a pick? I don't, I don't, I don't. And look and the thing is, I have to I have to study this because I'm gonna study this. I'm gonna study this like I studied it last year. And but this is just a different, different circumstance. Forty pitches and in a certain amount of times, so you have four point five seconds between pitches if you if you put it on set, you need a veteran guy that has done it before to be able to go in and and not be

nervous and not waste pitches. It should be fun. Eduardo can't wait to hear you speak all three languages during the All Star break and then Home Run Derby love what you do with David Cohne and Carl Ravich on Sunday and Wednesday Night Baseball. Thanks a lot for taking the time out. We could talk baseball all day long, but you got TV work to do. Yeah, it's crazy, that's awesome. Appreciate you, man, I appreciate you. There he is Tim and Wardo Perez. He'll be part of the home run

derby coverage with ta Oscar Hernandez all In. Send it back to you all right, Thanks a lot.
