The Dodgers and Yankees meeting for the twelfth time in the Fall Classic, the first time since nineteen eighty one, the Yankees getting here by beating the Royals in the ALDS, then the Guardians in the ALCS, the Dodgers advancing by

beating the New York Mets in the NLCS. It was a Game six at Dodgers Stadium last Sunday night, the Dodgers going with a bullpen game. Sean and I, the leftander who gave the Dodgers fits in Game two, was on the mound for New York, and the Dodgers would get after him and chase him quickly. Not before, though, the Mets took that early one nothing lead of the top half of the first inning. The bottom of the first, Tommy Edmund and Rbi doubles, scoring two, and the Dodgers

were up two to one. Then in the third, Tommy Edmund delivered again.

The Dodgers in the eighth inning scored three more to go up and win the game by a final of ten to five over the New York Mets and win the National League pennant on Sunday night at Dodgers Stadium. And now the setup for Game one of this World Series Dodgers Yankees,

the matchup everybody wanted. That's the East Coast versus the West Coast, the first time these two teams have met since the nineteen eighty one World Series, a year in which the Dodgers would beat the Yankees in six games. First pitch tonight from Dodger stadiums coming up in five oho eight and with more, let's head out to Dodgers Stadium the Galloping Motors Broadcast booth as we welcome in Stephen Nelson and Rick Monday.

Speaker 4

Guys, all right TC here with Rick Monday MO. The last time we were together it was before Game six of the Championship Series, and we're saying, gosh, this last hour before first pitch is crawling. These last four days leading up to this World Series were an absolute slog. But we're finally here the eve of the first pitch of Game one of the twenty twenty four Fall Classic.

Speaker 8

How you feeling nervous like everybody else? And that's the way it should be, because if you weren't nervous, I'm meant that did mean that much. I mean, this is the showcase. And I think you look at these two powerhouses in the great tradition that the Dodgers have had and the Yankees have had in their existence, and for locals to see this right now that takes place, I mean there's all kinds of in the windows and numbers and facts and everything else. These are two very talented teams,

first of all, that are competing here. And when's the last time you saw this many MVPs in a World series? As well. You have to go really back into the record books. So this is a tense time, no question about it. And this is a wonderful stage for Major League Baseball, and they're presenting two of the best teams.

Speaker 4

I think as well. Put Mo, it's called the World Series, and that's so perfect this year because it does feel like this is really going to be.

Speaker 1

A global World Series.

Speaker 4

Just the impact that these you know, four to seven games could have on the game, given the international star power of the two most icon brands that you have in baseball clashing. I'm wondering, though, forty three years since the Dodgers and Yankees last mint in the World Series. Of course you were part of that World Series, won that World Series. What about the nerves and the emotions now broadcasting Dodgers Yankees versus playing in it, if you could compare, if that's even possible.

Speaker 8

No, it's not possible. But there is a different flavor to it. You wake up earlier in the morning, maybe you don't have as big an appetite, you wind up in the ballpark very very early. You're looking, you're trying to define trends. Well, what does he look like? Does he look nervous. Well what about this guy he hasn't hit in the last.

Speaker 9

Two or three days.

Speaker 8

Does it make a real big difference?

Speaker 1

You take all that.

Speaker 9

I mean, this is a big impact that you have.

Speaker 8

There's no other feeling than being on the field and actually competing. You have a chance to do something about it. Here in the booth, we are observers and trying to pass it along. That's the big difference that we have in that end of it. But you still get the butterflies even here because I know what.

Speaker 9

Some of these guys. Most of these guys are thinking.

Speaker 8

Having played against the Yankees in three different World Series and then finally after the frustration, the loss of seventy seven, frustration loss in seventy eight, then finally able to write the ship in eighty one. This is a big, big deal. And these guys have been dreaming about this setup since they were kids in their backyards.

Speaker 4

And we've been dreaming of this game one of the World Series for a long time. We're about to see it. All right, it's send up with window addressing, Tim. We'll get it back to you next time we chat with you. We'll actually talk some ball. Game one of the World Series. Coming up soon.

Speaker 1

This is Kirston's corner with Kirston Watson.

Speaker 2

Hey, Karson now joins us before Game one of the World Series. Seems like forever since we last talked Hereston, It's been almost a week between the NLCS and the start of this World Series.

Speaker 3

But here we are Dodgers Yankees. The matchup everybody wanted.

Speaker 7

This is the matchup not only that everyone wanted, you know, especially when it comes to Josis are to the best team in the American League, the best team in the National League. But when like you take take back a layer when we were children, this is what we dreamed of. And so this is the part that I think makes this moment even more special. This team has been talking about.

Speaker 1

They go back to spring.

Speaker 7

Training, which started early for this group because they went to South Korea. So we go back to February where the conversation was, you know, putting them in a position to win the West. Obviously they made all these moves with Joheo Tani bringing in Tyler Glass, now yoshinoby Amamoto. How do you put them in a position to be successful this year? What does that mean with Yoshinobu on

pitching once a week, all of those things. Then it was the challenges of injuries left and right with Mookie Betts, the rotation, things like that, finding out that Tyler was done for the year, and all while trying to maintain this goal of winning the NLS.

Speaker 10

They did that.

Speaker 7

It was a battle against the Padres for in the NLDS, maybe the Mets in the CS, and now they're here in the World Series. So this team, they have showed resiliency, they have shown fight, and they're ready for four more wins. They want that parade. That's been the biggest thing. How do we celebrate in LA especially for the guys were on the twenty twenty team, So the time is now and so they have it right in front of them.

Speaker 5

To figure it out.

Speaker 2

Kirsten is brought to by Cars for Kids, the easiest way to get rid of your old car. Donate today your car can be picked up tomorrow. Donate now in Cars for Kids dot org dest Cars with a k. This World Series roster, it looks a little different than the NLCS roster, especially in the bullpen.

Speaker 7

First and foremost, they are without Edvan Phillips, he in Game six of the NLCS. He was trying to do an updown, but he wasn't able to go back out there. He was dealing with a little bit of just kind

of like a dead arm, essentially. He was hoping when he spoke to the media yesterday, he was pretty hopeful that he would be on the World Series roster, but Andrew Friedman explained that when you have a player who is dealing with a previous injury, if they end up getting hurt again or it's not how they wanted it to be, you can't replace them on the roster. So this was a decision that you kind of had to outweigh the risk over you know what, it's the risk

of what could happen with putting Evan out there. Whenever he was kind of ramping up, that's when that pain was kind of coming back. So they are going to be without him, which is unfortunate because he has not only been excellent this year, but this postseason he has been lights out for this team. So they'll be without him, but they do have two other reinforcements, so Alex Vesia

is back. He started dealing with the intercostal injury and his oblique in the NLDS, so he was down for the CS, but he's put himself in a good position to be back out there, so he feels good and then adds another lefty to the bullpen. And then we also have Bruce Ard Graderol who's had an up and down year everything from starting with the shoulder inflammation that

kept him down for majority of the year. His first outing out of the bullpen, and here's the knee injury, and there were the tears, and we thought that his season was over, you know, it was. It was scary, to be honest, And a week later he was like, oh, I'm okay. Actually, like this is surprising to all of us. He was just a handstring injury. So then it was some shoulders horn us again, the one that he experienced earlier this year. So now he's in a spot where

he's on this roster. He wants to be a part of this run. He has huge moments come October so in the past, so hopefully he can do it again and put this team in a position for four more wins and taking home that World Series.

Speaker 2

Ready four more wins. It starts the night with Game one. Kirston appreciate it. We'll check in with you after the game still to come. Here on Dodgers on Deck, we'll dive deeper into this bitchet matchup. David vet Say goes one on one with tay Oscar her Netandez. But up next we'll hear from the manager himself, Dave Roberts, get his pregame thoughts as we lead you up to Game one of the World Series Dodgers Yankees first pitch at five oh wait. I'm Tim Katsus Los Angeles Dodgers Audio Network.

Speaker 1

This is Morongo Cassino Dodgers Hunters on your home for La Dodgers Baseball.

Speaker 3

Speaker 2

Dodgers on Deck continues on this Friday afternoon, as we lead you up to first pitch, Game one of the World Series Dodgers and the Yankees, Marongo Casino Resort and Spa, A Grand Slam for good times, Jack Felerity and Garrett Cole the pitching matchup, first pitch coming up at five oh eight. Let's head back out to Dodger Stadium and get the pregame thought to the Dodgers kepber anything else, Dave?

Speaker 1

Do you think the questions for Dave Dave, can you just describe Dave.

Speaker 3

Can you talk about the pressure in the dugouts with Dave Roberts.

Speaker 10

I think if you know, if there's two people that probably impacted this organization most, I think you would say Jackie Robinson and Fernando Vallenzuela, And no disrespect to anyone else, but I think that you know, if you're talking about currently the fan base, you know, there's a lot of people that are here and support the Dodgers in south

of the border because of Fernando. And so that was obviously when I was younger, really young, but his legacy continues to live on, and so he was a friend of mine, and so did not see him up in the booth or to say hello is sad for me and his family. But Fernando was a gentle man, a great Dodger and just what a humble man.

Speaker 1

Go upfront on your right, Dave.

Speaker 11

Hey, Dave Crystal Rich KTLA Flaherty today from his experiences this postseason, from pitching seven scoreless to the NLCS Game five, where he said his biggest lesson was wanting to make adjustments earlier. How do you hold all those experiences culminate to allow him to have the best outing today.

Speaker 10

I think experience. I think that his pitch mix, his ability to command the baseball, he has weapons to get left, he's out right, he's out pitching to all quadrants. I do think the lesson of being able to read and react in game is huge where I think that's where the experience piece kind of is benefit. Because you don't know what's going to be working that particular night. You don't know what those guys are hunting that particular night. So to be able to sometimes go off script is important.

Speaker 5

Games like this.

Speaker 2

All right, there's Dave Roberts down the dug out brought to my Service Titan. Dave Roberts wins in the playoffs by being ready for anything. If you want your contracting business to succeed, you need to be ready to Let's Service Titan help you be prepared, Service Titan dot Com.

Speaker 3

When we continue here on.

Speaker 2

Wronggo Casino Dodgers on deck, we will check in with the David Vase as we are leaning you up to first pitch from Dodgers Stadium, Game one of the World Series Dodgers and Yankees, first pitch at five. Oh wait, I'm Tim Katsus Los Angeles Dodgers Audio Network.

Speaker 1

This is Marongo Casino, Dodgers on Deck on your home for the Blue All Season Law.

Speaker 3

Dodgers and Yankees. It's Game one of the World.

Speaker 2

Series from Dodgers Damum, Jack Flerty Garrett Cole the match up first bitch coming.

Speaker 1

Up five away, joining Tim Kats on Dodgers on Deck.

Speaker 5

I accept everybody for who they are.

Speaker 1

This is Dodger insider David Bassi.

Speaker 5

All right, DV.

Speaker 3

The roster came out today for the World Series. No Evan Phillips. When did the Dodgers know that he may not be available for this World Series? And who takes over his role.

Speaker 12

During Game six of the NLCS is when Dave Roberts and the Dodgers realized something was going on physically with Evan Phillips. Because if you go back and watch, if it's even on television, Dave Roberts gave the signal to Phillips after he came back to the dugout in the sixth inning, Hey you're going back out there for the seventh inning. But then we didn't see Phillips come back out for the seventh inning. Daniel Hudson came in to pitch that inning, So that's when Phillips started to feel

something in his arm. Dave Roberts told us earlier today he just couldn't bounce back. He couldn't recover, and that's an issue at this stage of the season. So that's when the Dodgers knew Evan Phillips was definitely in jeopardy of not making this World Series roster and eventually obviously is not on it.

Speaker 5

As far as who takes his role.

Speaker 12

Look, Evan Phillips was really good against righty's and lefty so Ryan Brasier may get those as the Dodgers like to say, groupings of hitters. Also a big boost to this bullpen without Phillips is Bruce Star Gretorol, but what can you expect from him. He hasn't pitched much this season and he's been dealing with shoulder issues all season long.

Speaker 5

Alex Vessia, who was not on.

Speaker 12

The NLCS roster, is a key component to try to neutralize Juan Soto, because, as you know, you're not just facing Juan Soto, you're facing the righty's in front of Soto or the righty's after Soto. So Vessia is definitely a key component, but big question marks in the Dodger bullpen as they go into the World Series.

Speaker 3

David is driven by four. There's one thing you like.

Speaker 2

Its choice is fine yours with the F one fifty gas hybrid all electric tough, this march can only be called f one fifty DV.

Speaker 3

Who do you think has the edge in this series?

Speaker 5

I think the Dodgers do.

Speaker 12

The reason why is, I know the Yankees have the edge and starting pitching, but the Dodgers do the little things better. They play defense, they throw to the right base, They're a better base running team.

Speaker 5

The Yankees are not known for that.

Speaker 12

The Yankees are known for their starting pitching and known for slugging their way to the Fall Classics. So those type of things, when you're going up against another team that does them well, can be glaring and maybe even cost you a game.

Speaker 5

And when they're evenly matched like this one game, can swing and win a.

Speaker 3

Series, no doubt about it. David, great stuff.

Speaker 2

We'll check back in with you a couple more times throughout the show. T Oscar hernandez DV is gonna go one on one with coming up in just about fifteen minutes. Coming up here on Morongo Becauseino Dodgers on deck as well. We'll dive deeper in to this pitchy matchup, but up next your Dodgers.

Speaker 3

Speaker 3

We go back to nineteen eighty one.

Speaker 2

The World Series that year featured the Dodgers and the Yankees. Dodgers down two in this best of seven series, which came back to Dodgers Stadium for Game three. The Dodgers needed a win, so who they give the ball to? Fernando Valenzuela going.

Speaker 13

Through the panela.

Speaker 1

That's the en.

Speaker 4

This was a bad ball.

Speaker 9

Almost in the third panella on a count went after it.

Speaker 1

And somehow this was not the best Fernando games.

Speaker 9

It was this Finus.

Speaker 2

Then Scully with to call a complete game for Fernando Vealezuela. Dodgers won Game three of the nineteen eighty one World Series, a five to four win. Dodgers Baseball is brought to you I Zensh handcrafted sushi made fresh daily on signe pickup Delicious Sushi before or after the game at Ralphs and other local supermarkets near the deli counter.

Speaker 1

And now joined by David Basseying. Here's La Dodgers broadcaster and World Series champion Dodger Brick Monday.

Speaker 12

Rick, It's great to be here with you before Game one of the World Series. Right now, Dodger Stadium is honoring your former teammate, former broadcast partner, the great Fernando Vealezuela.

Speaker 8

And it was a big loss, David, and for all of us, you know, we knew that, you know, time was limited, but Freddy, as we referred to him, he fought through it.

Speaker 9

And it's a big loss, not only from a baseball standpoint. That's the easy part.

Speaker 8

I mean you can look at numbers and understand what Fernando was able to do, maybe not understand how he did it, which was exceptional, But if we look at it, and I've talked about it now for the last number of days, he brought cultures together.

Speaker 9

I mean not only here in southern California, but around the country.

Speaker 8

As the story of Fernando Vealezuela continued to grow and grow and grow, from the kids who would come up and see him to adults would come up and be in tears to be able to meet this young man from a remote area in Mexico. If you line Fernando up with nine other people and you say pick out which one is the all star pitcher, Zeke is not one that you would point to him immediately.

Speaker 9

They had nothing to do with what he was able to do on the mound. It was remarkable, and even.

Speaker 8

Though that we knew unfortunately the time was coming, it does not diminish at all the feeling of emptiness and something that hit me and I immediately was on the phone for a couple of days with talking to the teammates, and it hit all of us because we saw the other side of Fernando.

Speaker 9

When he was not on the mound. He was childlike when he.

Speaker 5

Was on the mound.

Speaker 8

He wanted to meet you. And the way he pitched. I was talking to a columnist about thirty minutes ago. They said, well, how was he when he was pitching.

Speaker 9

Because that one gave he threw a hundred and forty seven pitches?

Speaker 5

What was that like?

Speaker 9

And I said, we didn't.

Speaker 8

Mind it, because Fernando when he was on the mound was like a kitten playing with the ball of yarn.

Speaker 5

He loved it. He loved to be out there for ninety The other thing.

Speaker 8

Too, is this is not the first time. You and I had a brief conversation about this just a few minutes before we came on the air. This is not the first time the Dodgers had gone through this with losing a member of the organization, a uniform personnel right before a World Series and right before a World Series

with the New York Yankees. The same thing happened to us in nineteen seventy eight just before the World Series, where we lost our first base coach and former Dodger player Jim Gillian, who is one of the guys that also his number has been retired even though he's not a member of Baseball's Hall of Fame, that's how important he was. And we went through that, and I remember the sadness in going to his service. There were a couple of Yankee players that also attended Reggie Jackson. I

think there were a couple of other ones. And we went right from the services for Jim Gilliam to the ballpark.

Speaker 5

Rick, you and Fernando shared something very special.

Speaker 12

You could say you were part of a Dodger team that beat the Yankees in the World Series.

Speaker 5

Only two other teams outside of yours can say that.

Speaker 8

Yeah, And you know, and reflecting upon Fernando and the tribute is taking place as we speak here that were coming on live, it's a big, big loss, no question about it. I only saw Fernando flustered a couple of times. It's not on the baseball field, was on a golf course. And other than that, I mean, you know, also, as we shared, you know, each and every day and each and every night with Fernando's as a broadcaster, he was one that would kind of entice you to have a smile.

He's one that would kind of toy with you in order to kind of get your attention and then kind of chuckle and walk off.

Speaker 5

And he was.

Speaker 8

He was just that way, and we are going to miss him to his wife, Linda in a family. Our conduluses and our deep thoughts and our prayers go with his family for now. The met a lot to us, more than just as a pitcher, but as a close friends.

Speaker 12

He made it fun in the press box. I look forward to seeing him and certainly I'm with you. I'm gonna miss him every day. I'm glad we got Charlie Steinder in the house today. Rick, he's here for Game one. He knows the big games.

Speaker 9

A world series, Dodgers and Yankees.

Speaker 8

This may be the first world series that we could talk about and truly be a world series.

H I don't. I don't wanna give me my own credit, but you know, I just gave it to you, and I appreciate it. I appreciate it, and I appreciate all the people that say the same thing. But for me, my job is to do the little things, to do the things that that I know how to do, and to do the things that I have to do to help these team wins, to keep my teammates focused, to keep my teammates relaxed, and to keep my teammates had some fun. So uh, for me, it's it's been amazing.

The Dodgers they know, I'm really grateful for the opportunity and the fans for the support and everything that they have.

Speaker 9

Done for me.

Speaker 12

Ta Oscar Hernandez is our guest before Game one of the World Series. Ta Oscar, when you talk about Dodgers Yankees, I don't talk about forty three years ago. I talk about June when the Dodgers were in the Bronx and ta Oscar Hernandez had a series for the Ages. I hear athletes talk about visualizing confidence knowing that you had those type of games against that team. How much confidence does it give you going into this series.

Speaker 13

I'm always confidence in myself, especially now that I'm in this organization. I have confidence in myself, my teammates. We know we have a pretty good team and we can do a special things and we show it during the regular season. In the playoffs. Is not only me, It's gonna take, uh, every single player, every single staff, good decisions that we make during the games, and and and

those all those little things and and displayoffs. Especially, Uh, the pitching staff has been great for us, and I think they're the reason we are here going to the the World Series.

Speaker 12

Well, I know everybody looks at the pitching, but it's a lot easier to pitch when you got five or six runs on the board from the offense.

Speaker 5

So why has it all come together for you guys at the right time.

Speaker 13

I really don't know, but it's it's one thing that I know is everybody's thinking about winning. Everybody is not thinking about their self. Everybody is trying to do things to give an opportunity to the team to win, to score runs. And I think that's that's what has been the key for us, is just to not think of a personal numbers. You just think about what can.

Speaker 5

We do.

Speaker 13

That day in that situation to help the team.

Speaker 12

It feels like it's been leading by example yourself, O Tani And how about the NLCS m v P Tommy Edmond very unselfish at bats?

Speaker 13

Uh, you know, he was really hot. He was doing the things that everybody knows. How he he he does is not is nothing new for him, is nothing new for anybody.

Speaker 1

Uh.

Speaker 13

He's a great player. He can play everywhere and he can bring a lot of good things to to this team.

Speaker 5

Before I let you go, Jack Flaherty on the mound for you guys for game one? What why is he the right guy?

Speaker 13

Whoever he put Dave put in the mound is the right guy. We had confidence in every single guy that we have in that roster, and Jack is not in a section. He's one of the great ones. He is one of the best pitchers in Lee and I think he's gonna a really really good job tomorrow.

Speaker 12

Tayl, Can you believe we started in South Korea and here you are in the World.

Speaker 13

Series celebrating this. This is what we play.

Speaker 5

Can't wait to touch the beard again after this series is over. Tail, here you go you got it. Oh, I love it.

Garrett Cole on the mound for the Yankees, thirty four year old right hander out of Orange Lutheran High School UCLA. Twelve season on the Big League's fifth with the Yankees. Made seventeen starts. During the regular season, he was eight and five with a three forty one ERA and ninety nine strikeouts. He's one to oh the three thirty one ERA and three postseason starts this year. The Yankees in those games are three to oh and he's allowed three. Earn runs are fewer and each of those three starts.

Jack Flarry, the Pride of Burbank on the mound for the Dodgers, twenty nine year old right hander, former first round pick out a Harvard Westlake High School, made twenty eight stars during the regular season ten with the Dodgers after coming over to trade from the Tigers. He went six and two the three fifty eight e R and sixty one strikeouts. So far this postseason, Jack flarerity three starts.

Speaker 4

Back here with Mo MOA again. There's just so much pomp and circumstance, and it's all justified for the series Dodgers and Yankees.

Speaker 1

It all makes sense.

Speaker 4

Let's talk baseball now, in your estimation, what are the two or three biggest factors that are going to determine who wins the World Series?

Speaker 8

I think from a Dodger's standpoint, to begin with the starting pitching, because the starting pitching has more guys on the injured list than on the active list. And for Jack Flaherty getting this start here today, you know he was ill in that start that he had in the National Championship Series against the New York Mets, and it was a very painful three innings for Flarity. So how does that match up? I don't know if the Dodgers can match what they were able to do out of

the bullpen. They're absolutely sensational. And on the flip side of it, the Dodgers going to have to figure out a way, if you're looking at the Dodger side, how to hit Garrett cole Here's another interesting thing. The last six games that Garrett cole has pitched, He's not allowed a base hit in the first inning of any of those six games. So you're lessening the game from nine innings maybe to eight the way that Garret colea is

going who hits mess. Yankees, by the way, did not hit particularly well in postseason so far with runners in scoring position, Dodgers hit over three hundred.

Speaker 4

Yeah, the Dodgers are a totally different offensive unit than anything that the Yankee staff has seen up to this point. But still, I think you're spot on first innings, mall because first innings as how often have we talked about that in our pregame segments, getting off to a good start for the starting pitchers, well for Walker Buehler, yoshinobu Ya, Momono, Jack Flaherty, whatever order you want to put them in.

Obviously Jack has Game one. They've all had a tough time consistently getting out to good starts and putting up zero in that first inning. And that Yankee offense has a top of the order right now in Torres sodoin judge, which has been given opposing pitchers.

Speaker 9

Nightmares in the first inning very quickly.

Speaker 8

If we look at them, Yankees or an offensive standpoint, better fastball hitters than off speed pitches. And I make that because Jack Flaherty moves the ball around, spends it, changes speeds, and so far Yankees have been vulnerable ill speed.

Speaker 4

Gosh, there's just so many things that we've been poking holes in Tim over the last four days, this number, this stack category, this matchup in that one. At long last, it's time to play ball. Jack Flerty's first pitch to Glaber Torres coming up shortly here at Dodgers Stadium.

Speaker 2

All right, thank you, Nelly. First pitch is next, Dodger fans. We've been waiting forty three years. Here we go, Dodgers Yankees from Dodger Stadium. Jack Flerity on the mound. Game one is next.

Speaker 1

Enjoy it.
