Dodger Talk is sponsored by LA Care Health Plan, providing affordable healthcare insurance to millions of Angelinos for over twenty five years. And now your voice for Dodgers talker fight Back, David Vasse. Welcome to Dodger Talk. David Vasse with you until eight o'clock tonight here on AM five to seventy LA Sports. And a disappointing start to this series for the Dodgers, as the Phillies routed the Dodgers tonight in Philadelphia ten to one. The final score eight six six nine
eight seven two five seventy is the phone number. We have two lines open. Obviously a lot of disappointed Dodger fans out there, and look, I'm not going to downplay the excitement for this series. Similar to the three games in New York against the Yankees. You would get excited over this series. And certainly if the Dodgers would have won tonight, I would have come on and I would have said, big statement win for the Dodgers going into Philadelphia,
beating the Phillies, the best team in the National League. So I'm not gonna come here tonight and say no big deal. I mean, come on, it means absolutely nothing, right, it's all about October. I'm not going to do that, even though I kind of want to, even though that's the rational thing to say, that's not the way you feel. And look, that's not the performance you want out of the Dodgers, who
are supposed to be the best team in Major League Baseball. I think many of you just focus on the Dodgers and don't really watch other teams play as much as I do, and a lot more than others do. And you can get caught up in the Dodger bubble. And then you see a team like the Phillies and you realize, uh oh, they might be better better than us. And right now the Phillies are playing better than the Dodgers. And right now the Phillies have a better starting pitching staff than the Dodgers do.
That's the issue here. Offense, Yeah, it comes and goes more nights than others. The Dodgers are one of the best teams in the National League record wise, because they do score runs, they do hit home runs, but it's not there every night. What you need is starting pitching. And when the Dodgers, I know, everybody looks at Otani and Mookie and
Freddy and all that. The reason why the Dodgers are where they are right now is because of their pitching, and more specifically they're starting pitching, especially the first two and a half months of the season. Now recently they've sustained some pretty big injuries. They lost Bobby Miller for a month. They've lost Yoshi Yamamoto until August at the earliest. Tyler Glass Now was placed on the il earlier today with some back tightness, so he's not going to pitch before
the All Star break. So right now, the Dodgers are a wounded animal, and the Phillies took advantage of it. But the reason why the Dodgers have fifty five wins is because of their pitching just as much as it is about their offense. And frankly, the last ten games for the Dodgers, their starters just have not been good. And when they're not good, they put a lot more stress on their bullpen, which is not good either. You don't want to have to see Keik Hernandez pitching in the seventh inning of
a game with two outs. You don't want to see that. You don't want to see Johann Ramirez in a game over and over again in the fifth inning. And you look back at these last ten games for the Dodgers starters, it's been abysmal. Forty five runs allowed in their last forty four innings. As the Great Stu Lance would say, that won't get it done on the Dodgers audio network. That will not get it done for the Dodgers. And that's the biggest issue. And even more concerning is Bobby Miller. Is
he still hurt? I don't believe so. Is he chasing velocity? I've been told that, and he should stop doing it. He should be throwing that two seam fastball aka sinker, down in the strike zone, down and away from right handed hitters. That's his bread and butter pitch. It's not trying to throw one hundred miles an hour, which by the way, hasn't happened since he came back off the IL. And if it has happened, it happened once tonight. He threw his hardest pitch at ninety seven point seven
miles an hour. Stop chasing it. It's good enough. But you know, I heard Oral Herscheizer say this, and it really resonated with me, and I wish that Bobby Miller would have heard it, and hopefully Orl Herscheizer can get this message to Bobby Miller. When Orl Hersheiser was a pitcher and you had Don Drysdale, Johnny Padres, and Sandy Koefax as instructors and being around the team, they were teachers as well, and Oral Hersheiser said on
Sunday when Mookie Betts was in the booth. As a pitcher, you don't try to make a better pitch than your last one. You try to make that same pitch. And when you try to make the next pitch even better or even greater, or throw it even harder, that's where the margin of error starts to get greater, because you can't make the perfect pitch. To be a consistent pitcher, you have to consistently make your best pitch, you don't try to make it even better. And I feel like that's what Bobby
Miller is doing. And in his last four starts since coming off the IL, Bobby Miller has given up nineteen earned runs in seventeen innings. Let's head back to Philadelphia right now to hear from Bobby Ice and what's going on with him lately. What's been missing though, is his four starts in now, since you came back, I haven't really looked like yourself in any of them. Feel I explained that, Yeah, I've been getting into two counts,
not putting away guys fast. You know. Obviously Vlosi is a little down too, but uh yeah, just stuff just doesn't have as much bite to it right now. I'm just not putting the guys, putting guys away fast. When I get deep into account and I'm slot of three ball counts, a lot of walks, just everything I'll put together. But I may get back to where I need to be. I know that for sure the stuff isn't it is have the same bite. The velocity is down. Why is
that? I couldn't tell you. I'm trying everything I can. You know, the shoulders strong right now. Done testing on that. My shoulder is really strong right now. So it's probably just mechanics, just a little bit of everything. So yeah, I'm just still trying to figure that out. All right. There's Bobby Miller, and I like the anger in the tone
of his voice. That's as angry as you will hear Bobby Miller. He's going to be respectful, obviously, but he was not happy, not happy with himself, not happy with the line of questioning because he is not performing up to his standards. And you know when you ask him what's going on and he talks about mechanics and he doesn't really have an answer. It's really simple. I believe it goes back to what Oral Herscheizer said and what Sandy
Kofax used to teach. Don't try to make a better pitch than the last one, make that same pitch. And it feels like Bobby is chasing right now. Eight sixty six nine eight seven two five seventy is the phone number. Dodgers fall to the Phillies tonight, ten to one. Let's go out to the Palisades, Ronnie lead us off on Dodger Talk tonight, Ronnie, where are you all right? Ronnie? Regroup? That's not a great way to lead us off. Let's go out to Fresno. I know I can
always count on Jeff and Fresno. What's up, Jeff? Hey, Dave, so listen. I don't care if we would have lost thirty to one tonight, I really honestly don't, because in twenty twenty when we won it all, I don't remember any regular season game. I remember the last out of the World Series. My issue is is that glass Now Saturday, before he pitched, Dave Roberts said he had tightness in his back last couple starts before that was not good. Clearly something was going on, and we pushed
him and we paid the price. And now he's out, and so now we are going to be making deals in a position of weakness. We've already made an offer for Crochet wasn't accepted. Do you think the White Sox are going to want even more now that glass Now's hurt? Of course they are. Last night you talked about giving I can't eaven his name right now from the Rangers. Nathan Evaldi. Nathan Evaldi, Thank you. Nathan Evaldi would be perfect. Here's another name of someone we can get, Tyler Anderson.
They worked as magic with him a couple of years ago when it was the Dodgers having a great year. He's not going to be nearly as much as Crochet. If we get Crouchet, he's going to be another lesson. Then getting a guy who's pitching more than he's ever pitched before, and he'll be watching from the bench in October on the sixty day as out. We got to get away from these guys. Nathan Nevaldi, Tyler Anderson, come on down, all right, Jeff. I feel like those are two different categories
of pitchers. Tyler Glass now is a number four or five starter on the Dodgers. Is he really a guy that you want to put your playoff hands into? He pitched kind of well against the Padres in the NLDS. Maybe was taken out a little bit too soon, But to me, if it's not Garrett Crochet, it must be Nathan Valdi. And I also made the case last night that I would choose Nathan Nevaldi over Garrett Crochet for two reasons.
Avaldi's a two time World Series champion. Teammates and opponents have each told me that if there was a Game seven of a World Series or any playoff series, they would give the ball to Nathan Evaldi. That's who the Dodgers need, that type of guy. Eight six, six, nine eighty seven, two five seventy is the phone number. Let's go out to Javier in La. You're on Dodger Talk. Hi, Javier, Hey Dave, how are you? I've been better? I didn't like seeing the Dodgers lose that
way to a team they might see in the postseason. Well, that's two of us, Mike. Guess my question is are we going to pay a real high pamium tax for any type of pictures they're going to try to go again? Right now? Javier, I've heard I've heard people say there is a Dodger tax. Teams are going to ask for more from the Dodgers than any other team because they're the Dodgers. And number two, they have a wealth of talent or supposed talent in the minor leagues. If it's a supposed
of talent, why have we called anybody up? Do you see any eyes on them? Didn't you just see Justin didn't you just see Justin Robleski on Sunday? Yeah it wasn't too pretty either. Well, I mean it wasn't. I wouldn't say that, but yeah, they have depth, They have guys to call up. And don't you remember Andy Pajs from earlier this year? How many teams have Andy pas that they could call up? Well, not a lot, but I guess I can sneak in a real quick question.
We have the four we have fore arms right now, and that we were like on the just to get through. Gavin Stone packs in and next, I mean, who else do we have just named him? He just named him? And we sound like the Giants right now where we're gonna have to do stop? Do you know where the Giants are? They're forty four
and forty seven, ten and a half games out. The Dodgers are not going to have to do that because they just called up a young starter, so they're not going to the bullpen game every other start sounding like you were just trying to needle me. That's not going to happen. But you are right about the Dodgers' staff right now. You got Yamamoto on the IL, who just got paid the richest contract of any major league pitcher in the history
of the game, and who knows when he's coming back. You got Tyler Glass now on the IL with some backstuff, and look, I don't really believe this back issue is going to keep Glass now out that long. It feels like there was something there and the Dodgers decided, you know what, all Star break coming, how about we just scrap one more start. You give that back a little extra time to rest. There's no skin off our back because there's no games and you come back in the second half of the
season and we roll from there. Clayton Kershaw is making a rehab start on Saturday in Oklahoma City, but he's not a guy that you can count on. Who knows, who knows how that shoulder is going to respond. And Walker Buehler, I mean, everybody was acting like Walker Buehler was going to pick up where he left off in twenty twenty. That was not the way it went down, and I'm not sure how much you can count on him. That's the reason why the Dodgers are focused on getting another starting pitcher,
and not a fringe starting pitcher. They're focused on getting a starter that can help them pitch Game two, Game three, that type of caliber starter. Nathan Ivaldi is that guy. Eight six six nine eight seven two five seventy is the phone number. Not to mention the starters on the IL. How about the relievers on the IL. Joe Kelly has barely pitched this year, Ryan Brazier has barely pitched this year, and Kyle Hurt was supposed to be
a young guy coming out of the bullpen. He left his minor league appearance a couple of weeks ago with the arm injury as well. So the Dodgers have a lot of pitching injuries and they're still in first place in the NL West. Let's go back out to the phones. Pallo in San Diego. You're on Dodger Talk. How you doing, pollow Hi, David, listen. I don't mind losing. It's just how you lose. I sent you a text master earlier, and I did really did not appreciate, you know,
Dave Robert removing Freeman, TiO Hernandez and Choyotani after four innings. Just you know, you know what much I disliked the you know San Diego Pathers on April the eight, the San Diego Pathers Trail de Cobbies eight or nhe they went out to win nine to eight. All right, I mean, losing is one thing. It's just how you lose. How do you remove your best one, two, three punch? You know, after four innings It's like you raised the wet you know, the white flags said okay,
this this game is you said yourself on the Pregium Show. This game was already lost. Come on, David, after four innings, it was they weren't coming back against the Phillies. The Cubs are in last place in the NL Central. But I understand what you're saying. It's not great optics to take those players out in the fourth inning. Maybe try to get them one more at bat, Maybe take them out in the sixth inning. But look, you're in beautiful San Diego, Poolo. It's hot, it's humid in
Philadelphia, and the Dodgers still have two more games over there. But I understand what you're saying. Fourth inning maybe a little bit too early, but let's be realistic. The Dodgers were not coming back. This was not course field where they scored seven runs in the ninth inning. That wasn't going to happen. Come on, David, we have first and second numbery. I'm realistic, Poolo, I'm just being realist. Sick. I'm sorry, David. All right, Paulo, thanks for the phone call. Eight sixty six
nine eighty seven two five seventy is the phone number. We're gonna take a time out here on Dodger Talk when we come back. More of your phone calls at eight sixty six nine eighty seven two five seventy. We have a full border calls. If the Dodgers win tomorrow, we better have a full border calls as well. This is not a trend. I like you only call when they lose. That ain't right. Phillies beat the Dodgers ten to one on a five to seventy LA Sports. Dodger Talk is available on AM
five seventy LA sports dot com, hand on the iHeartRadio app. Back to more Dodger Talk with Dodger insider David Basse comes the next offer. It's swung on well, hit to right, going back as castianos, He's to the wall, It's gone, this's you old a home run and the Dodgers get on the board. It's nine to one. Third home run of the season and first as a Dodger for Calvin Biggio. Calvin Vigio home run in the fifth inning that made it nine to one. The comeback was on, according
to Polo and San Diego. The Phillies go on to beat the Dodgers tonight by a final score of ten to one, Game one of this three game series. This is a six game road trip for the Dodgers, two more in Philadelphia and then three in Detroit. Before the All Star break. Did I mention that former Dodger Trey Turner was the one that beat them tonight. He was three for four tonight with the backbreaking grand Slam, part of a six run fourth inning for the Phillies. So Trey Turner comes back to haunt
the Dodgers tonight in the Phillies ten to one win. Daniels Jewelers they are the official sponsor of the Trip around the Diamond. Stop by any Daniel's location in say home run for your free team bracelet and fifty dollars gift card toward any purchase of ninety nine dollars or more. Daniels Jewelers owned the dream. David Vaz say with you until eight o'clock here on Dodger Talk. I mentioned Trey Turner came back to beat the Dodgers tonight. It's true. He came
up with the biggest hit of the game. Even though Bobby Miller does not want to acknowledge the fact that his ninety two mile an hour exit v low and three hundred and fifty six estimated distance was not worthy enough of a Grand Slam, but it was. It was a grand slam. It went over the wall in left field in that ballpark. It was a grand slam. But you know what Bobby Miller should be more upset about is allowing the seven eight to nine hitters to do as much damage against him as they did tonight.
You look at what they did against Bobby Miller. In the first four innings, they faced him twice. Brandon marsh had a walk and a single and a stolen bass against him. Marshan the catcher, was on base twice. He had a single and a double against him. Rojas the center fielder, two singles, a wild pitch, and a stolen bass. They scored six runs when Bobby Miller was on the mound tonight. The seven eight nine hitters scored six of the nine runs charged to Bobby Miller. Think about that.
As much as we have talked about the Dodgers seven eight nine hitters and how they really haven't done much, you got a taste of what life is like when those seven eight nine hitters set the table for the Phillies Big three Schwarber, Turner, Harper, Boehm. The seven eight nine hitters for the Phillies tonight were it combined seven for nine with a double, three RBIs, two stolen bases, and they scored seven times the Dodgers seven eight nine hitters
were two for eleven. One of those two hits was that garbage time home run by Calvin Bigio another the second hit was a base hit by Gavin Lux in the eighth inning. So basically they did absolutely nothing. Eight six six nine eighty seven two five seventy is the phone number. Let's go out to Whittier, Tony. You're on Dodger Talk. How you doing, Tony?
All right, Dave? How's it going? Yeah? You know, yeah, I just want to I just want to talk about how how fans, especially on Twitter, I've already seen that's DSA, probably Miller the DFA. Are they crazy? That's release toxic fan? I know, I know, I tell me about it. I just think fantas to relax. It's only one game, and I was telling myself, if the Dodgers route the next two games, you're just gonna see how everybody's gonna flip and everybody's gonna call
and they're gonna say we're back. It's on again. I just I just want to time in on that. I just think he's really toxic against really silly that these fans say that. All right, Tony on a sprint, Thanks for the phone call, I appreciate it. Let's see where everybody's at if the Dodgers get a crack at the Phillies in October and uh, let's not forget the next big series is when the Phillies come to LA in August, So that will be just as big of a series as this one is.
So every series can be big. But at the end of the day, it's about taking care of yourself. And what's more concerning or equally as concerning as losing ten to one to the Phillies, is where the Dodgers' starters are and where they're going right now it's not going well. And even more concerning is Bobby Miller. How is he going to get this straight? Is he going to come to the realization that he can't try to top the previous pitch with the next pitch, He can't try to throw the best pitch ever
every time he throws the baseball. Once he realizes that, I feel like he'll take off and never look back. Let's go out to San Pedro. Chris, you're on Dodger Talk. How you doing, Chris doing well? Dave? I'll keep this short, and by the way, you took one of the points that I was going to talk about the seven eight nine for the Phillies. They changed the whole game tonight. They set the table for Shorter, a two run single, and then of course the grand slam by
by Trey Turner. I wanted to call out actually the training staffs for not just the Dodger in the Major league department, but also the minor leagues because listen, injuries are a part of the game. We all know that guys are gonna go down it as far as Tommy John goes. It's not even if anymore, it's when. But for the Dodgers, this is not a short sample size, Dave. This has gone on for about six seven years now. It feels like there's always just a slew of guys on the IL.
And these aren't like quick, oh, you know, they'll be back in two weeks. These guys are taking like two three months to heal, you know, So, like, what are these what is the training staff doing? Give me, give me a specific case, name one of the seven pictures I mentioned on the I L and why it's the trainer's fault. Okay, Ryan Brazier's got a cap injury. He takes the cat like he's thirty. He's thirty six years old. And yes, it took two months
when he was in Boston. Okay, Joe Kelly another thing, that's a lot. Joe Kelly's thirty six years old too. He's had arm problems, his arms dangling. What about like a lot of the young pictures as well? Who dust I thought May? Like I said, it's easy to point the finger. I know you called in, you're fired up. You want to point the finger at the training staff. It's not the training staff's fault, Chris. You're dealing with older relief pictures though. Two that you just
mentioned. And when you talk about some of the younger pitchers, I heard you start to say Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin. Well, maybe the thought process of the way these pitchers are being trained in the minor leagues shouldn't be
throw one hundred miles an hour the first day of spring training. Maybe that's where the industry as a whole has to take a look in the mirror and start deciding, you know what, maybe max effort every single pitch is not the way to go, because if you do, those guys are going to break. And yeah, if you're the raising Dodgers. You have a pitching depth to fill in for the next man up. But for me, I feel like these pitchers need to be taught that throwing one hundred miles an hour
on the first day of spring training should not be celebrated. Yeah, I hear you. And now that was gonna be my next point. It's not just at the major league level, it's also at the minor league level. But it just feels like, Hey, the Dodgers. The Dodgers' minor league pitching coordinator is on the record is saying his goal is to have his pitchers throw one hundred miles an hour. That's not the way to go. Chris, Oh, I to hear you. I hear you. That's what I'm
saying, Like this has to change. But it just also feels the Dodgers, compared to other teams, usually have a lot of il sins for their pitchers, and like I said, it's been going on. It seems like the last six seven years, even the years where they were winning n ol Pennance, like this games to be Chris, it's not just the Dodgers. Look around. I know we're in the bubble of the Dodgers. It's not
just the Dodgers. It's an industry wide issue when it comes to the elbow, the shoulder, and when you're talking about veterans like Kelly and Brazier, are you going to point out Kershaw because he's thirty six as well and has a lot of miles on him. So it's not just that I gotta run. Thanks for the phone call. Eight six six ninety seven two five seventy is the phone number. Let's go out to Diana, Granada Hills. You're on Dodger Talk. How are you doing, Diana? Hi, Dave.
I'm doing pretty well. How are you? I'm doing great? Good good. So the callers, Chris, he brought up a lot of what I wanted to talk about. But honestly, I'm just wondering, do you think there'll ever be a shift back to not throwing one hundred miles per hour every pitch like back in the seventies and eighties. I mean, I don't remember pictures going down the way they do now, and it's quite frustrating as a fan to you know, every year the great pictures are going out. I
mean, it's the problem is Diana. It's not just the organizations, but it's the culture that's created, and it's going to have to be another wave of rethinking the way you train as a pitcher. The problem is a lot of these young pitchers, the generation of the Bobby Millers. Yes, they're chasing velocity not only in the game, but also in their bullpen sessions.
From what I understand, they're trying to make the best, greatest pitch in their bullpen session and looking at the iPad looking to see their spin rate, looking to see their velocity. That's not what bullpen's sessions are meant for. It's supposed to be nice and easy work on certain things, not to try
to throw the best pitch ever at the hardest velocity. So I feel like with the pitch clock, there is a rethinking in the industry as a whole that we can't encourage these guys to try to a go max effort on the mound in a game and b not to do that in a bullpen session. So I feel like with this pitch clock right now, there's a whole rethinking, not just with the Dodgers, but in all a major League Baseball on
how to best prepare these pitchers. Right right, Well, I can tell you I know it starts at the high school level at least, because you know, all these guys getting drafted or seen or going to go to college are throwing ninety five in high school and they're doing that, and those high school coaches are encouraging that as well, Diana, and that's a problem as
well. Andrew Freeman just scratched the surface when he was asked about that at the end of last season, and he said, that's a whole different press conference if you want to get into what's going on at the youth baseball level. So it's got to be a whole recalibration starting in high school because, as you know, Diana, kids are getting Tommy John surgeries in high school. Yep, it's crazy, it's crazy. I know. Thanks a lot
for the phone call, appreciate it. Hey, Speaking of max effort and high velocity, did you notice what keyk Hernandez was throwing in the seventh and eighth innings tonight? You never want to see a position player throwing in those innings, And it reminded me of the last time keyk a Hernandez was pitching. It happened to be in Philadelphia back in twenty eighteen. Where he came in in the sixteenth inning of a tie game. The Dodgers were out of
pitchers. They had to play a day game within a eleven hours, and Dave Roberts needed key K a Hernandez to go to go out there tonight. Keik a Hernandez threw his hardest pitch at fifty four miles an hour, and you know what he did. He did not give up ten home runs. Key K a Hernandez did not allow a hit or a run. That goes back to my point. You don't have to throw one hundred miles an hour to get outs. Let the guys behind you do their job. Now,
this was an extreme case, right, fifty four miles an hour. That's not something you want to see. But the reason why Kik was only throwing fifty five miles an hour or fifty four miles an hour, was because of what he was told by his teammates back in twenty eighteen. When Dave Roberts threw him out on the mound in the sixteenth inning, his teammates told him, don't blow out, don't try to be superman out there, just get it over the plate. And here was Keik Hernandez last year on Muki Bets'
podcast, recalling that night in Philadelphia in twenty eighteen. At the top of the sixteenth inning and I am over seven and the game is tied. We run out a bullpin on. Dave Roberts looks at me and goes, whodo score you're bitching? Oh? I go out their first pitch, I throw ball, gets hit in the gap and I look back and Bellinger's running out there like a dinosaur. The whole extension gets it. Next guy forerverploof of
the play. I got him on two strikes and then I throw him an Eathles server Proof absolutely launches his baseball walk off through on Homer and then I get into that locker room and you can hear people think you. I just go, hey, guys, has any of you ever gone over seven at the plate and lost the game on the mound? Yeah, that was keyk a Hernandez on the Mookie podcast last year talking about when he first pitched in
Philadelphia back in twenty eighteen. So maybe he broke the ice again. And hard to argue that we saw Key k Hernandez have the most fun tonight on the mound that we've seen in a lot time because the bat has not been there for Key K. He looks frustrated. He's been acting frustrated. So hopefully this loosened him up and he can go out there and play free and easy and be the Key K Hernandez we know he can be. Hopefully he's there for Gavin Stone tomorrow. Gavin Stone is on the mound for the Dodgers
tomorrow. He's nine and two with an ERA of three zero three. He's going up against another rookie standout in Christopher Sanchez, who has had a great year for the Phillies. He's six and four with an ERA of two ninety six. Morongo Casino Dodgers on Deck begins at three o'clock tomorrow, with first pitch at four oh five. That'll do it for us tonight here on Dodger Talk. I see a lot of you still on hold. If we didn't get you, you call back tomorrow, especially if the Dodgers win. Thanks
to Colin Ee for all his help and his Beach Boys hoodie. Thanks to Dwayn McDonald in Philadelphia, and thanks to you for listening. In case you missed any of the show, you can find it on the iHeartRadio app. That's also where you can find our pregame conversation with veteran lefty James Paxton, one of the few that's still standing in this Dodger rotation. Once again. The final score tonight from Philadelphia, the Phillies defeat the Dodgers ten to one.
