Dodger Talk is sponsored by La Care Health Plan, providing affordable healthcare insurance to millions of Angelinos for over twenty five years. And now your voice for Dodger Talk. Like back, David Vasse. We are live at Oracle Park in San Francisco after Brent Wisley walks the Giants off with a two run home run off of Blake Trining in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Giants a five to three victory in Game one of this three game series in San
Francisco. We're with you until eleven o'clock tonight from Oracle Park in San Francisco. We have phone lines open at eight six, six, nine eighty seven, two five seventy. I did have a chance to talk to Max Munsey today, so we'll give you an update on Monsey and where he's at in his rehab. It was a pleasant surprise to see him here at Oracle Park because he did not travel with the Dodgers to Chicago and he met them here, so that means things are progressing in the right direction. I'll give you
full details coming up a little bit later in the show. Also, we had a chance to speak to the man that saved show Aotani's dental work and also probably saved the Dodgers season in some ways. Javier Herrera, who is the most famous bat boy slash club house attendant in Major League Baseball. Today we had a chance to catch up with Javier before he met the Japanese media
man a big media day for Javier Herrera. So we'll let you hear some of that conversation, and also we'll get to some mind numbing trade talk. But let's go back to this game. Obviously, you know Blake Trenton did not execute a slider and Brett Weisley did not miss it. Tip your hat to Weisley, who did not miss it in a four hundred foot two run
walk off home run. But tip your hat to the Dodgers Andy Pohz, who, as you heard Jose Moda described, he saw Pajz take exception to Camillo Duval throwing a pitch inside and a little stare down from the Dodgers rookie center fielder out towards the Giant's closer with a five era and then he attacked another fastball and hit it for a triple because Halio Ramos closed his glove before
he had it in it and Pajes was off to the races. Dodgers tie the score in the ninth inning, and you feel like they have all the momentum in the world. I actually thought the Dodgers had a golden opportunity to tie this game, or at least come close to time this game. In the top of the eighth inning, after show Hao Tani led off the eighth with a base hit, he beat Taylor Rodgers to the bag. He was not going to beat Otani to the bag. So you had show Hao at
first base with one out and Freddy Freeman at the plate. Freddy's a contact guy. He's the most professional hitter you can find, probably in all a Major League baseball or at least this side of Luisa Rise. Freddie Freeman at the plate, Otani at first base with a lot of speed. Why aren't the Dodgers putting show Hey Otani emotion right there? Down a run against Taylor Rodgers, who is not delivering the pitch to the plate that quickly, and
you start to get the infielders moving, creating more holes. And where Freddy hit his ground ball to the second baseman. If Otani's in motion, he probably safe. At second base, So I thought that was a situation to start putting Otani in motion in the top of the eighth inning. As far as taking landon Knack out with two outs in the fifth inning, I understand the Dodgers process of taking a pitcher out when they haven't proven enough in the
big leagues out after the third time through the order. But landon Neck he had Jorge Solaire down in the count O two, and I feel like he started to overthrow and try to do too much because he saw Anthony Banda warming up, meaning he knew that Solaire was going to be his last hitter, because they were going to bring in Anthony Banda to face Lamontway Junior. And look, I understand the general numbers, third time through the order, it
favors the hitter. But if you look at landon Neck in just five starts coming into tonight, he has held hitters one for twelve third time through the order. And I thought, you know, considering the big lead the Dodgers have, considering they were still up er run, why not give him a chance to afford himself an opportunity for the win in San Francisco. But look,
it worked out and I'm not second guessing Dave Roberts. I was turning to my left, turning to the right, wondering, Hey, I understand all this, but why not give him a chance to show what he could do in this position? And you know, Daniel Hudson gave up the go ahead to run home run to Matt Chapman. Does that happen if he doesn't take knack out at that point in time? I don't know. That's a lot of what ifs. The whole chest pieces move a lot differently, but
I understand the whole third time through the order. But I also want to credit Dave Roberts because he is an extension of the Dodgers' philosophical beliefs. When it comes to that, he's an extension of that and he has not deviated from that process. And let's not forget Dave Roberts allowed Gavin Stone to throw a complete game shutout in Chicago on Wednesday night. But look, I covered the Lakers when Phil Jackson coached them. Phil Jackson is what an eleven time
NBA World champion coach. That doesn't mean he's above asking the question, why did you do this? That's all I'm asking why that's not an attack on anybody. Let's head downstairs right now to hear from Land and Neck because he pitched really well. And then we'll get to Dave Roberts and Blake Tringing. I feel I feel like at the very beginning of the game, my throw was like a little off. We were we were still making pitches when we
need to, but I was just a little off. And then kind of got my curve ball going a little bit, and I think that kind of like locked in the rest of the throw, and so after that, like things felt much much easier. And then yeah, fifth inning, you know, leave one over the plate obviously sometimes it's gonna happen. And then a couple of singles, but you know, stuff, stuff all good. Dave said ahead of your adding that the focus was just going as long as you
can, as hard as you can. How do you just kind of manage
yourself? I guess when that's kind of what's being told to you and you're trying to kind of either get deep into the game things like that, I mean, you just kind of have to continue to go all out until it's your time to come out and make sure that you're kind of going all out every pitch because I mean, yeah again, like you don't know when your last pitch is, so I mean one hundred percent just trying to go all out the entire time and make every pitch like it's going to be your last
one and just keep on going. Really trying to go with that home run pitch. I was trying to go down in a way and just kind of leaked a little up middle a little bit and just kind of came back on me. What do you has sort of allowed you to sort of know, obviously being up and down while also being a rookie and trying to get your funeral, Like, what's allowed you to sort of have the success you've had
thirty gaming since your big career at this point. I think it's it's just been kind of continuing to do my routine and kind of treat every outing the same a little bit. It's like getting up here and understanding that you don't need to do extra. You just need to make sure that you are executing your pitches, You're keeping them off balance and kind of moving things around and
just not over complicating things on yourself. All Right, there's land and NAC thanks to sports in at LA for bringing us that postgame reaction from tonight's starter. Nack tonight four and two thirds innings, only gave up a solo home run in this game to Luis Mattos in the fifth inning, and had seven strikeouts and no walks. And I love the way landon Nac pitches. I know he's not going to blow you away with one hundred miles an hour,
but ninety five miles an hour will get it done. And tonight he had that, and he used his slider, he used his change up, he used his curveball, and he did not start to unveil all pitches the first two times through the order. Third time or second time through the order, he started to throw more changeups and curveballs, and that really kept the Giants'
hitters off balance. And you know, if you do a power ranking, so the Dodger starting pitchers as it is right now, not talking about guys on the injured list, because let's face it, we don't know if they're coming back or when they're coming back. But if you had to do a power ranking of the Dodger starters, you would obviously start with Tyler Glass now and Gavin Stone. But right now I would put landon Nack I had a
Bobby Miller and James Paxton. That's the way I feel, That's the way I love the way he has great mound presence, he has great confidence in himself, and he has four different pitches. He knows how to pitch, and in this day and age of throwers, that's refreshing. Eight six six nine seven two five seventy is the phone number. Giants beat the Dodgers tonight, five to three. Let's go out to Redondo Beach. Steve, You're on Dodger Talk with David vasse Hi. Steve Yo, the real DV.
What's up, Dave? How are you everything? Well, you know what, I'm a little salty. I something gets under my skin when the Giants beat the Dodgers, especially up here. I know it's tough to drop one
to the hated ones. Man, I feel you dude, Hey, I I don't you know I I My question is, I just really want your perspective, you know, you know, with with Alex Vessia, I really think that the dude is a gamer, right, and I really like his demeanor and I want to kind of I want your take on where where you see him in this in in our bullpen and the role that he plays, And I don't want to kind of kind of sound like some of the some
of our fans in the years prior with the Kenley Jansen and our closing our closers in the in the year's past, you know, like just kind of you know, when we drop one, what do you get? What are you saying about? What are you getting at? I'm not following Alex VESSI, I don't know. One of the most high leverage relievers on the Dodgers this year. I mean, Dave Roberts brought him into a basis loaded jam at Yankee Stadium. I don't know how much higher leverage you can get.
I think he's right up there with Trynon Hudson Phillips. He's their number one lefty and one of the best lefties in the National League. I would love to see him step into that role. That's what I'm oh before you want him to close? Is that what you're saying? Yeah, Dave, I thought I was. I was. I was kind of easy into Okay, I was hoping you would back me on that. I'm not going to back you on that. Steve he does have four saves though, Steve, so
he has done it before. And uh, look he has that little crazy in him that closers need and relief pitcher's need. But right now I feel like the Dodgers are in pretty good hands with Evan Phillips. Well, all he needs to do is claw's face with like a little John Rocker, and then he'll get them get the nod. Hey, he has four saves, so he's done it, Steve, and he's more valuable putting out fires and other innings outside of just solely the ninth inning. Thanks for the phone call,
appreciate it. Eight six six nine eight seven two five seventy is the phone number. Brett Weisley. I know a lot of these Giants players we have never heard of before, but Brett Weisley, second basement for the Giants hit a walk off to run home run on off of Blake training. Let's head downstairs right now to the Dodgers clubhouse to hear from Blake trning himself, who's on sports and at LA. Honestly, I don't even know where the pitch ended up really hit. I know I made two good sliders before that
swinging. This one seems like the right pitch in the right time, so probably it was more middle. But I have to go back and I'll get it. What did you want that that she just seemed like you were attacking low and in that whole about Of course, I don't know keep very much about Rooky. Yeah, we have scouting reports, so it's all about execution and sometimes thanks keep that when we do with this bullpenon just because I've had a lot of success as of late, and obviously this is just one game.
But I guess what were you kind of seeing from the group and just kind of how you guys were executing out there, just like as a whole tonight. Yeah, I mean I felt like I felt like y'agro did a great job. Fan, they did a great job. I feel like how you did a good job of attacking the zone. Maybe there are guys have of tiss extremely well a year sucks losing. I guess that's about it. That I don't really know what else to say. All right, that's Blake
Trnon on Sports at LA. I'm with you. I'm with you, Blake. You just did not execute the pitch. There's not much else to say. And look, that's gonna happen for relievers from time to time, but Blake Trining has been outstanding for the Dodgers this season. Eight six, six, nine, eight seven two five seventy is the phone number. Look, I'm with those guys. I know they have fifty one wins and the Giants are trying to piece it together this year forty and forty three. But there's
something so annoying about this stadium and these the Giants. The Giants, there's something annoying about them, and man, they really basking it when they beat the Dodgers, especially in dramatic fashion like they did tonight as Blake Trining and the Dodgers go down to Brett Weisley and the San Francisco Giants tonight at Oracle Park five to three. When we continue here on Dodger Talk, we'll get to some mind numbing trade talk. There's more names being thrown out there around
the league about possible trade targets. We'll also get you an update on Max Muncie, and you'll hear from the most famous bat boy this side of anywhere. Javier Herrera joined us on the pregame show. He saved Otani's life in
Chicago Wednesday night and it went viral. You'll hear from Hovey later in the show as we're taking you to eleven o'clock on Dodger Talk Live from Oracle Park after the Giants beat the Dodgers five to three on air at AM five seventy, online at amfive seventy, LA sports dot com, and available by podcast on the iHeartRadio app. This is Dodger Talk with David Bassan. Pies rips the ball left center field. Running after it is Ramos Huick cannot make the
catch, it goes to the wall. Pot has going for third to throw over there, not in time, and the Dodgers have the tying run on third base with nobody out. The Dodgers wearing business. In the top of the ninth inning, Andy pat Has with the leadoff triple off of Camillo Duvall, set up Jason Hayward's sacrifice fly to tie the score at three. The Dodgers would send it to the bottom of the ninth inning tiede but Brett Weisley, Yes. Brett Weisley hits a two run walk off home run against Blake
Trining and the Giants get the win five to three. In Game one of this three game series. This is Dodger Talk. David Vase live in San Francisco with you until eleven o'clock tonight. Daniels Jewelers they are the official sponsor of the Trip around the Diamond. Stop by any Daniels location and say home run for your free team bracelet and fifty dollars gift card toward any purchase of ninety nine dollars or more. Daniel's Jewelers own the Dream. Eight six,
six, nine eighty seven, two five seventy is the phone number. All right, had a chance to talk to Max Munsey when I went down on the field around two point fifteen this afternoon. I was surprised to see Max Munsey doing his pregame drills with Dino Ebel. And when Max came back to the dugout, I said, Hey, are you swinging the bat yet? He said, yes, I am, David. I said, Max, would you like to tell me when the first day was that you swung the
bat? Well, wouldn't you love to know that? David? Uh So, he did let me in on this that he was taking swings inside today in the batting cage. So that's a good thing. And if you go back to the last homestand if you were listening, I reported that Max relay to me as well that once he starts swinging, he would return in two weeks, which lines up when he's eligible to come off the now sixty day
injured list. In case you don't know how the sixty day IL works, after you're placed on the fifteen day IL, it's not like you're adding sixty more days to the already existing amount of fifteen. It goes back to the date that you were placed on the fifteen day IL. So Max Monsey's first eligible day off the sixty day IL would be July fifteenth, which, as
you know, is the first day of the All Star Break. So more than likely he will be back the first game back after the All Star break, and that would be against the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night at Dodgers or Friday night at Dodgers Stadium. So expect Max monsely back after the All Star break when he's eligible. But the good news is he's swinging the bat and hopefully he does not have any setbacks. Eight six six, nine eighty
seven two five seventy is the phone number. By the way, I feel like we all appreciate Max Munsey and how he fits in this lineup a lot more since he's been out since May fifteenth. His OPS when he went on the IL was eight hundred. The Dodgers combined third basemen that have tried to fill in for Monthsey since then is in the four hundred range, so nearly half of an OPS at third base for the Dodgers since Mounsey went on the
IL. And speaking of players and how they fit with the Dodgers, obviously we're getting closer to the July thirtieth trade deadline, almost exactly a month away, and Garrett Crochet seems to be on the top of a lot of teams list. I'm hearing Dodgers Padres, and there's one more team that I heard, Dodgers Padres. I forgot who else the third team was, but I'll remember that also Chris Bassett of the Toronto Blue Jays. He's having a very
good season with Toronto. He may be on the trade block because the Jays are sinking fast. And there's a scenario where the Dodgers already have opened the lines of communications with Ross Atkins when they made that trade for Cavin Bigio. I find it hard to believe when Andrew Friedman called Ross Atkins about Cave and
Bigio that none of his other players ever came up. So the lines of communication are already open between the Dodgers and Blue Jays, and maybe that makes it easier to pull off a trade with the JS for Chris Bassett and maybe Bo Bischett. You know, everybody thinks Bo Bischett is the savior for the Dodgers. I'm not sure, but Chris Bassett certainly would fit the bill of
a starter that can make a playoff start if necessary. Garrett Crochet would be, above all else, the number one choice out there on the trade market the White If they want to trade Garrett Crochet, they certainly will have a bidding war for him because he's probably the best starter available at the trade deadline. But Chris Bassett, a right hander, keeps the ball down, actually made his name up here in the Bay Area pitching for the A's and got
a big contract from the Blue Jays. Now. Also, maybe the Dodgers are considering another bullpen arm, left handed. Tannor Scott from the Marlins is a name that's out there. Pete Fairbanks from the Rays, our old Frank Kenley Jansen, Yes, his name is still out there. And how about Kyle Finnegan of the Nationals. We had a caller a couple of weeks ago implore me to consider Lane Thomas, the right handed hitting outfielder for the Nationals.
How about a Kyle Finnigan and Lane Thomas trade and a guy I think that could help the Dodgers. I'm not sure the Angels would trade with the Dodgers, but a guy that certainly could help their infield offense would be Louis Renhifo. And remember, the Dodgers and Angels had a framework for a trade back in twenty twenty where the Dodgers would have traded Ross Trippling, Jack Peterson,
and Andy Pajez for Taylor Ward and Luis Renhifo back then. So if the Dodgers like Renhifo, then he's only become a better Major leaguer since then. You would imagine they still believe he could help them. So we'll see whether or not they believe the Angels would make a trade with them for a player like Louis Renhifoh. Look, the Angels the White Sox, they need talent in their organization. I don't think they should be opposed with trading for
anybody or with anybody in their positions. Eight six six nine eight seven two five seventy is the phone number speaking of the White Sox. Gavin Stone on Wednesday night pitched a complete game shutout, but he was overshadowed by Dodgers bat boy and clubhouse attendant Javier Herrera, who was caught on camera by a Japanese
network saving Otani's life and basically his face. A check swing by Keik Hernandez sharply went into the Dodgers dugout where Otani was standing on the steps near the batrack, and sitting right in front of him was Hobby Herrera, who very calmonly just grabbed the foul ball and handed it to the authenticator like he did not save show hey Otani's life and Hobby joined us on the pregame show talked about how close the dugout is to home played out there in New Komiski Park,
the dugout at guaranteed rate field, very dangerous angle there, so you had to be on your toes. Can you take us through what you saw and what Otani told you after you saved his life. So, I mean it's pretty close by. It's what twenty feet maybe twenty five feet from home plate to the dugout, so I had to keep my eyes wide open, be aware of anything. So I think the first the first game, Crochet
was pitching. He was throwing hard, and he stood behind me saying like, oh, I don't want to He didnt say anything, but I knew he didn't want to get hit. But I did tell him, like, don't worry, I'll protect you. I got your back. And then game three in Chicago, I caught that line drive and the night when I caught it, he turned around. I turned around and gave him knuckles and I told him I told you, I got you. And then he was happy about that. Man, it was so smooth too. You didn't make a
big deal about it. You caught it and you handed it to the authenticator. Yeah. Yeah, I mean it was a foul ball. I mean, the game's still going nothing really, no one got hurt. That was the best part. I did my job, all right. So after that, we saw each other after the game. By the time we saw each other, things kind of got went viral. How many texts did you get from around the league, from former Dodgers current Dodgers about how it went viral.
I got a good amount of texts from family friends, even people that I don't even know, to be honest, but they're not in my context. But David probably did reach out TP J. T. Turner, Justin Turner reached out. Catboy reached out, you know, just saying good hands, like, you know, saying that, yeah, save, I saved Show his life. But I think he probably you know, I think he probably would have avoided a little bit. But you know, I did my
thing. Yeah you did your thing. Javey Herrera, and he deserves to have his name out there not just Dodger bat boy, because he's much more than that. And Javier has been with the team for over fifteen years as a clubhouse attendant, and ever since the pandemic started, the Dodgers have been traveling their clubhouse attendants to serve as bat boys. Brandon, Javier have been part of it. Joe been part of it. But Javier is the guy
that travels a lot, so he's a great guy. Certainly deserves all the shine he gets over this because how many of us or how many bat boys out there with no glove would have been able to just commonly have the catlike reflexes to catch the ball and not let it hit your seven hundred million dollar DH Pitcher Superstar Show. Hey Otani, I wonder you know everybody says,
is Otani going to buy him a Porsche? You know, I kind of feel bad for sho Hey because everybody feels like if you do something nice for him, or you save his life like Javier did that he owes you a Porsche, like he sent to Joe Kelly's house, I guess I would say what Hobby did deserves a Porsche more than just giving up number seventeen like Joe Kelly did. So I guess in context, I feel like what Hobby did his actions were more representative of getting some sort of reward. But I mean,
I guess he was just doing his job. And I know Hovey does not want anything. He's uncomfortable with all this attention. He was shocked that the Japanese camera crews were filming every step that he took today and in fact had to have a press conference with the Japanese media after he talked to us. So, congratulations to Javier Herrera and wow, show. Hey man, this guy saved your life, no doubt about it. Eight sixty six nine
eight seven two five seventy is the phone number. Dodgers fall to the Giants tonight, five to three, and coming into this road trip, six game road trip, three against the White Sox and three more Here in San Francisco, Rick Monday and I were talking about this and we both agreed what realistic records should the Dodgers have on this road trip, and we both said five and one. Sweep the White Sox and take two out of three from the
Giants. No matter how good or bad the Giants are, this is a tough place to beat them, as we saw tonight, and with Logan Webb going tonight, the Giants needed the game because they're going with a twenty six year old rookie, a left hander and Eric Miller tomorrow. They are undecided on who their starter is on Sunday, so they needed that win. Especially
with Tyler glassnow on the mound for the Dodgers tomorrow. You would imagine that and at four fifteen, by the way, where shadows come into play, Glass now is tough enough to hit this year without having the advantage of shadows. So the Giants really needed this game, and in my opinion, I feel like the Dodgers win the next two games of this series and deliver that five to one record on this road trip. Eight sixty six nine eight seven
two five seventy is the phone number. Giants walk it off thanks to a two run walk off home run by Brett Weisley off of Blake Trining tonight. And speaking of uh, you know, power rankings of starters and what took place in Chicago. Gavin Stone, Wow, the Dodgers' first complete game shutout since Walker Buehler did it back in twenty twenty two. In spring training, I had mentioned to you that I was a big believer in Gavin Stone.
If there was an award for the best pitcher in spring training this year, it would have been given to Gavin Stone. Player of Spring Training would have been given to Andy paj Haz. So both of these rookies have really earned their opportunity and they have both ran with it. And Gavin Stone outstanding pitching the contact during the past off season. He got bigger, he got stronger, He came up with two extra pitches, including his two seam fastball.
He has been outstanding and so humble and such a great guy. And our guy calling ye back of the Burbank studios heard Gavin Stone on with Petro some Money and wow, I'm number one humble that Petro some Money would keep the receipts on how high I was on Gavin Stone since spring training. And also, man, I'm floored by what Ving Stone told those guys about me. That's funny. Uh. No, David is a great guy. Immediately whenever I came up, you know, we connected and and started talking and got
to know each other pretty well. And and like I said, he's a great guy. And earlier in the season, actually he he I told him that my favorite player when I was growing up was David Exton, and he actually set it up to where I could FaceTime David and get to talk to him a little bit. So that meant a lot to me. And uh and I'll forever be grateful for that, just because you know, David was my favorite player growing up. But no, he's He's a great guy.
I love him to death. I'm so glad that he's in our clubhouse all the time. I don't know, I don't know what he saw in spring training, but Uh, so like, uh, we've always connected and he's always he's always liked me, and I've always liked him. So he's probably just giving me some you know, props in spring training. But yeah, that's cool with him to say, yeah, Gavin Stone, damn man, you're gonna make me cry Gavin Stone. After hearing that, Man, I
love Gavin Stone. Great kid, easy kid to root for. And you know what I saw. I saw a guy that worked really hurt hard during the off season. I saw a humble and hungry pitcher in Gavin Stone. And he has gotten that opportunity. And remember when spring training started, he was on the outside looking in. If Emmitt Sheen doesn't get hurt, Gavin Stone may not start the year with the Dodgers, and he was he had
to earn his opportunity and he did. And opportunities come in a lot of different shapes and forms, and next man up is always a great opportunity. And unfortunately for Emmit Shean, he had an elbow issue in spring training that opened the door for Gavin Stone to take it and he has not looked back. So man, Gavin Stone, very happy for him. And uh,
look, he has the lowest era on the Dodgers' staff right now. Not sure if you real that his era is lower than Tyler Glass Noow's and if he keeps this going one or two more starts, I mean, I know I talked about Rookie of the Year consideration in the National League, But how about now some All Star consideration? Glass now and Stone to the All Star Game? How about that? Who would have thought that in spring training? I wish I could say I did, but I'm not gonna go that far.
But if you're gonna be considered for Rookie of the Year, then yeah, I guess, uh, I guess an All Star nod is not out of question here now Tomorrow it will be Tyler Glass now on the mound for the Dodgers, trying to beat Gavin Stone's era. Right now, Glass now is at two eighty eight with an eight and five record. Like I mentioned, he's going up against southpaw Eric Miller, a twenty six year old rookie
who is a college pitcher out of Stanford. He has made seven starts in his Major League career this season and Morongo Casino Dodgers on deck begins at three o'clock with first pitch at four fifteen. That'll do it for us tonight on Dodger Talk. Thanks for listening, and thanks to Colin Yee back at our Burbanks studios. Thanks to Duayme McDonald out here at Oracle Park. And in case you missed our interview with Javier Herrera, the legendary hero himself, you
can find the full conversation on the iHeartRadio app. Once again, the final score tonight from Oracle Park in San Francisco. The Giants defeat the Dodgers five to three. Have a great rest of your Friday night. See you, Send it away.
