Episode description

In 1969, the Castlecomer Coal Mines in County Kilkenny closed, ending over 300 years of coal mining in the area.

In the documentary series 'Three Miles Over, Three Miles Down' we explore the rich heritage of the mining culture and social history. It's a five part series originally broadcast on KCLR with  support by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland through the license fee.

Programme 4 delves in to the industrial relations in Castlecomer in the 20th century. We hear about the main characters of the time, the mine owner Captain Wandesforde and his adversary, union leader and later ally Nicholas Nixie Boran. We hear about the strikes, the miner's health struggles and the fight for compensation.

Presented by Martin Bridgeman. Supported by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland through the television license fee.
