Kendrick vs Drake

Speaker 1

I need to talk about this . Kendrick Drake beef oh the beef . You know what I'm saying . Where's the beef ? This is the best rap beef in history . For a long time people could say hip-hop is dead , particularly for us . We would all say that the golden age of rap was like that 88 to like 95 , 96 .

And then afterwards commercialism and kind of making the same type of thing over and over again .

Speaker 2

Right , everybody's singing their raps . Singin singing their raps . You know who you are if you got nursery rhymes in your rap game .

Speaker 1

Yo , what's good everyone . Welcome back to another episode of Docs Outside the Box . I am your host , Dr Nii Darko . I'm joined by the habitual line stepper , my beautiful , lovely wife , mother of my children , amazing OB-GYN this is going to be every time . Deliverer of children , Mother of civilization , when are you going with this ?

The Asiatic Dr Renee hey , what's up how you doing ? I guess I'm doing this by myself then . Oh , so this is going to be every time I'm going to be introduced like but if you're going to say habitual line stepper , then you have to say it all the time , because use a habitual line stepper , you can't just say things and just not say it the next time .

The whole point of it being habitual is it's habitual . So that's why I'm saying it over and over again You'll habitually be line-stepping . Oh Lord , Alfred , cue habitual line-stepper please . You know he would step across the line Habitually . He's a habitual line-stepper .

Speaker 2

Here it comes , no , no there is no , here it comes . He knows what I'm talking about , dave .

Speaker 1

Chappelle .

Speaker 2

The habitual line stepper , habitually .

Speaker 1

So , guys , are you going to even acknowledge that I gave you a shout out ?

Speaker 2

I did . I just said that . So this is going to be every time that you're going to do this big . Yes , it will .

Speaker 1

Like introduction , uh-huh Okay .

Speaker 2

Well , I mean that's fine . It yes , it will Like introduction , uh-huh . Okay , I mean that's fine , it just makes me bigger than you on the show .

Speaker 1

Yo , shout out to everyone who's listening on your favorite podcast apps and if you're watching us on YouTube , shout out to you . We appreciate it . Hey , we are growing our subscriber counts . I love it On both podcasts we were covering on podcasts with our downloads .

With the great apocalypse known as iOS I don't know what it was 17 , that just destroyed everybody's download numbers . But yo , we're making a nice recovery . Destroyed podcasting single-handedly and then shout-out to everybody who's watching us on YouTube and subscribing to our show . We really appreciate that . And also , I just want to say shout-out to our team .

We have a great team , literally a team from all over the world , from Kenya to the United States to Mexico City . It's dope , and I'm really appreciative of everybody who works really hard to make this show . Go out and listen , guys .

This episode today is going to be about self-care while working , but before we get into that , like let's chat it up a little bit .

Let's talk real quick about , like , some things that are going on in pop culture , because , like part of me , part of the reason why I think I delay with doing some episodes , is like damn , like I really don't want to talk about that without first talking about this .

Ok , and in this situation I need to talk about this Kendrick Drake oh the beef , you know the beef , and this is one of the best rap beefs in history .

Speaker 2

This is the best rap beef in history , better than us and jay-z . Yes the takeover .

Speaker 1

Yes the ether yes wow yes , text us at 833-230-2860 . Tell me who you got kendrick or drake or come on . If you haven't heard , if you are not even paying attention , if you're just one of those guys , who's or women who would , like you know , get off my lawn . I don't listen to kendrick or drake you crazy .

But if you are one of those people , you just want to tell us what's one of the best rap beefs of all time . Let us know 833-230-2860 .

Speaker 2

And Roxanne Shante .

Speaker 1

At the time it was .

Speaker 2

It was the only rap beef . It was the first rap beef . Well , I don't know if it was the first .

Speaker 1

But that's the reason why I think this is the best rap beef . I think for a long time people could say hip hop is dead or there hasn't been like a natural , like improvement in rap Right . Like improvement in rap right .

Like , particularly for us who we would all say that the golden age of rap was like that 88 to like 95 , 96 , right when tupac died , biggie died like that was the golden age of hip-hop , and then afterwards commercialism and just kind of making the same type of thing over and over again right everybody's singing , they raps .

It's not even just singing their raps . But it became you know who you are out there . We know what we're talking about right , you know who you are .

Speaker 2

You know who you are if you got nursery rhymes in your rap game . The itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout , down came the rain and washed the spider out .

Speaker 1

But I think if you talk about the natural transition of rap beefs , it coincides with how music has changed , how hip hop has changed in an appropriate manner . So when Roxanne Shante came out , that whole beef , that was the best thing at that time , right , right . Then you have like Kumo D , and who was it , kumo D ?

And I forget who did he have beef with Kumo D ?

Speaker 2

and I forget . Who did he have beef with ?

Speaker 1

Kumo D had beef with Not Big Daddy Kane , I want to say Rakim oh , rak oh . No , big Daddy Kane , I can't Either way . I got to look this up . You keep talking . Then after that , you had I mean , you had so many smaller beefs , but just was good , right , you had Ice Cube versus the whole NWA , nwa . I don't know what's going on with my brain .

Speaker 2

My brain is going off like Jesus , Ice Cube versus the entire crew , Like wait what ? Then you had One man , yeah , common and Cube . He's like that man .

Speaker 1

Yeah , Common and Cube .

Speaker 2

Then you had Common and Cube and the beef , yeah , common and Cube Really .

Speaker 1

Then you have LL Cool J and Cannabis , which was an amazing one , right , this is in . That's the mid 90s . That's the mid 90s . This is like 97 98 , okay , okay , maybe 99 and then obviously , I think the apex was Jay-Z and . Nas , but that's different than how it is now .

Right , like you have literally 20 something years later , better beats , better rapping , the stakes are higher and , in essence , like it puts rap and hip hop right in the center of music , which is where it's at right now . That wasn't the case in the late 90s . That wasn't the case when Jay-Z and Nas were .

Speaker 2

Oh snap , no , it was LL versus Kumo D .

Speaker 1

I think that was one of the beefs Kumo .

Speaker 2

D and KRS-One .

Speaker 1

LL has had several beefs kumo , kumo d and krs1 I think was the first one .

Speaker 2

Oh , keras , keras . Well , actually keras1 declared war on , I think , almost everybody and he won he first came out and he won oh yeah , he was like all of the boroughs . I'm going to beat you because the bronx so anyway .

Speaker 1

So who do you have winning ? Kendrick versus nas ? Who do you want ?

Speaker 2

me , are we seriously taking a poll here ?

Speaker 1

but this is potting right . Like you give your point and I get okay , you know what then ?

Speaker 2

I then , since I'm the , if you're gonna stay , if , you're gonna stay .

Speaker 1

If you're gonna stay silent , just say you're gonna stay silent .

Speaker 2

No , if I'm the habitual line stepper , then I should probably say something that really is just going to blow people's minds and just start my own beef and just be like Drake won the beef . Okay , now text us what's that number again ?

Speaker 1

833-230-2860 . I'll just leave it to you like this if you are , you can tell how much of a Stan Drake fans are . If you are going to type in or call in or whatever you're going to do , and say that Drake won this , because there's absolutely no way , there's no way that you can sit here with a straight face and say that Drake won this .

He got spanked so bad . And the reason why I think it's a really bad this is the best rap beef of all time is he is basically the biggest star in the world right now musical wise okay , who's bigger than him ?

tail swift probably yeah , but it's close though he's shaking it off but it's close though , right , like when we talk in jay-z and nas Nas , right , like they were the biggest rap stars . Drake is the biggest , the rap star , but he's also the biggest one , the biggest musician out there in top three and we're splitting hairs , right , and you know .

So like I just think that for someone like Kendrick , who's a recluse , who stays in the he minds his business . He minds his business , to come in and just mollywop him like that Oof man . But listen , for me it was amazing .

Speaker 2

The tone that Kendrick can take , the change in tonality , the beats he's just on a different page . I was literally watching a Jerry Springer episode , with as much tea as was spilled between the two of those .

Speaker 1

That didn't move me as much though , because you can't prove any of that stuff .

Speaker 2

I'm not saying you can prove it , but I'm saying that to me is that's not necessarily what rap beats are all about . Unless you talk about Biggie and Tupac with that one line , we all know what it is Lined by Tupac the way he starts out .

Speaker 1

Listen , don't bring the West Coast on that . You already talked about Cube . I don't want anything you already talked about .

Speaker 2

Cube , I don't want anything . You already talked about Cube . No , but it's one thing to just be like like , have you know , say a line , you know , make it personal and then go on to do other things . Well , I guess Tupac really just laid into him , but that's what . I'm saying but most rap beats are not that personal .

Speaker 1

It is Not that personal .

Speaker 2

Well , yeah , it got to a level of personal that we've never seen before . I mean , it used to be everybody was a sucker mc , like that . Like that was the thing .

Speaker 1

If you whoever said sucker mc the most won , you know but this is why I'm telling this is the best rap beef ever , because the amount , the amount of personal , investigative , like journalism that they had to do to get this information crazy and they both have a lot to lose .

So a lot of times when people are at the top of their game , they won't go at each other just because of that right . You saw that with jay cole . Jay cole's like yo , stage left , I ain't going through this , I'm not built for this . And he bowed out like reverse , reverse , right , reverse , reverse . He backed out of it .

But nas and and sorry , but kendrick and and drake were like no , we're gonna shove all of our stuff to in the middle and look whether or not any of that tea is real or not , we'll never know . It doesn't matter . But for me it doesn't matter , because for me it's all about how well you wrapped it , how well you made the beat . Is it catchy , is it ?

And the thing that's ? Ultimately , look at kendrick's , the , the , what's the one that's ? Uh , the one that's from the ? I forget the name of it . Um , I can't believe . I can't believe . I'm blanking on .

Speaker 2

Are you blanking ? I was just listening to it tonight not like us .

Speaker 1

That's the number one record in the world yeah , but or I think , in the united states question we need a fat checker yo .

Speaker 2

Question Is this a publicity stunt ? I don't know I don't care , no , but is it ?

Speaker 1

I don't know , I don't know , like all of this stuff , all of that stuff , it could be very much a publicity .

Speaker 2

I mean , I think definitely . Well , a lot of it is publicity because you got to get the people going right In order . But why ?

Speaker 1

Why does Drake got to get the people going right in order , but why ? Why does drake have to get the people going ? He's at the top of his game . Everybody knows him to be the best , so why does he have to ? Why does he have to go after kendrick ?

Speaker 2

he doesn't have to so , but that's why I'm saying is this a publicity stunt ?

Speaker 1

but I'm asking I that's why I don't really think so , because I think Drake .

Speaker 2

Why would someone I can see Drake being very arrogant If you're at the top of your game and you're , essentially , you know , selling out , you know all kinds of places and you , whatever , you're making so much more money , then why even like , why even do this ?

Speaker 1

Why do what ?

Speaker 2

Like why go after Kendrick ? For what ? What was like ? What's the reason ?

Speaker 1

He did not go after Kendrick . Why go after Kendrick ? For what ? What was ?

Speaker 2

the reason he did not go after .

Speaker 1

Kendrick .

Speaker 2

Well , Kendrick came after him first .

Speaker 1

Correct .

Speaker 2

Right , so then why even respond ?

Speaker 1

Because Drake has smashed everybody . So he's like , well , I'm going to smash you , okay ? So arrogance . So it's like I mean , I guess , no , no , no no , no , let me just finish the point , mm , let me just finish the point . When someone is just as good as so , it's different when you are punching down , right .

That's what he's done for the most part , except for Pusha T , right , but Pusha T is a better rapper than Drake . But Drake has always had better writers and has better production . The ability for him to come back with multiple responses is unlike anybody else , his entourage is actually working .

They're not just on stage dancing but , as we've learned in this , as we learn in this beef , like there's just so many different things from a cultural standpoint that , like it even goes outside of this podcast , that , like drake doesn't have , that kendrick has .

Clearly , kendrick is considered a better rapper , but there's cultural currency that he has that he literally spent and that Drake could not even . He couldn't cash it Right and he got called to the carpet on it and then to put out an album , a line step and then 52 minutes later , another album comes out that's better than yours .

Musings on Hip Hop and Self-Care

That's when Drake , I think . That's when Drake was like I gotta stop . And he pulled out and he said look , summer Vibes , and he's going to come out with an album pretty soon Because he's like this is he lost ? So I thought it was the best . Well , he's probably running out of money , two of them at the top of the game .

Speaker 2

Got to pay all these people to write all these rhymes .

Speaker 1

The lyrical repertoire is you guys saw it . If anybody who's a true hip hop fan or someone who's very intrigued with hip hop and wants to understand , like , what true lyricism is , go listen to that Kendrick Multiple of his .

It's just amazing he can , the way how he can go from angry to just nonchalant , then back to angry , to just cool , to joking around , anyway , but that's not what this show is about , guys . But that was on my mind . That was on my mind .

Speaker 2

it's just like dag man so , yes , so kendrick won the beef .

Speaker 1

kendrick won the beef and , um , yeah , I was listening to it on the way back from my night shift . So when I finished night shift , I'm driving back four and a half hours to get back to you . I'm listening to that going hovee ho , like it's . It's um , it's good self-care by work while working . This is a big deal . This is huge for you .

This is huge for me . This is a lot of yeah , yeah . Self-care is something that you got to think about on a daily basis . You got to make moves , you got to practice this stuff every day , otherwise , you know the joke's on you .
