And so how long have you been bartending? 00:02:33:14 - 00:02:35:15 Tell us a little bit about your bartending career. 00:02:35:15 - 00:02:37:23 Just a quick little, little nugget elevator pitch. 00:02:38:04 - 00:02:42:15 Yeah, I started bartending in May of 00:02:42:15 - 00:02:46:02 2001, so it's been I was 11. 00:02:48:16 - 00:02:49:08 Well, I. 00:02:49:08 - 00:02:51:18 That said I was 11. 00:02:51:18 - 00:02:54:22 11 plus you. 00:02:57:03 - 00:02:57:12 Yeah. 00:02:57:12 - 00:03:00:17 I started, you know, right 00:03:00:19 - 00:03:04:11 after I turned 21 and didn't really know what I was doing. 00:03:04:11 - 00:03:07:16 The whole idea was just to make some money to move to Chicago. 00:03:07:23 - 00:03:11:08 So I did that in northeast Wisconsin, Door County where I grew up. 00:03:11:20 - 00:03:14:01 And yeah, I did that for a couple of years, 00:03:14:01 - 00:03:17:21 moved to Chicago, and I continued to bartend all the way up 00:03:17:21 - 00:03:20:18 until the pandemic and I was out of a job. 00:03:21:04 - 00:03:23:23 But it's been quite a ride. 00:03:23:23 - 00:03:26:19 Like the you know, there's so many different kinds of bartender. 00:03:26:20 - 00:03:27:07 Mm hmm. 00:03:27:07 - 00:03:29:10 You've got high volume bars and everything, 00:03:29:10 - 00:03:33:14 and all the bars that I've worked at have been very small, very intimate. 00:03:33:19 - 00:03:36:03 Right. 00:20:54:09 - 00:20:57:19 You know, the bars that I work at, they're, 00:20:58:07 - 00:21:02:06 you know, pretty small and intimate and people share 00:21:02:06 - 00:21:06:01 some really fascinating, interesting, sometimes embarrassing things. 00:21:06:11 - 00:21:10:16 And I like to say there's like a bartender customer privilege thing, right? 00:21:11:10 - 00:21:13:07 I have to think of, like the stories 00:21:13:07 - 00:21:16:22 that are really more centered around me as opposed to others. 00:21:17:02 - 00:21:17:10 Yeah, 00:21:18:18 - 00:21:20:22 But yeah, the 00:21:21:10 - 00:21:25:16 the first one that came to mind for me was actually it happened a long time ago 00:21:25:21 - 00:21:28:22 and it's really more of, of a moment that happened. 00:21:29:21 - 00:21:33:01 That is something I haven't forgotten that I think about quite a bit. 00:21:33:08 - 00:21:36:23 And it was when I was bartending up in 00:21:37:05 - 00:21:40:02 Door County is a fine dining restaurant, 00:21:40:09 - 00:21:44:04 really small, like eight C bar just off of the dining room. 00:21:44:04 - 00:21:47:06 It's a fine dining restaurant and 00:21:47:06 - 00:21:49:21 the this couple came in. 00:21:49:21 - 00:21:52:20 I had been working there for two years. 00:21:52:20 - 00:21:55:13 I'd say it's probably 23 like 20 years ago. 00:21:56:01 - 00:21:58:15 And I was young and just trying to save money to move 00:21:58:15 - 00:22:01:17 to Chicago, to pursue acting, actually. 00:22:01:17 - 00:22:04:10 And this couple comes in 00:22:04:19 - 00:22:09:03 and I remember she had a cosmopolitan, he had a robbery, and he was 00:22:10:16 - 00:22:11:12 one of those guys 00:22:11:12 - 00:22:14:19 that sits at the bar and picks up as much as he can. 00:22:15:08 - 00:22:18:00 And he's just got a booming voice, really, 00:22:18:06 - 00:22:20:15 you know, really big presence. 00:22:21:09 - 00:22:23:13 And we're just kind of getting 00:22:24:01 - 00:22:27:02 the flow of service and starting to pick up. 00:22:27:02 - 00:22:28:16 And he's right in the middle of the bar. 00:22:28:16 - 00:22:31:02 And and I, 00:22:32:04 - 00:22:35:16 I should preface this by saying in Door County, it's 00:22:36:08 - 00:22:40:02 a highly seasonal summer time. 00:22:40:02 - 00:22:40:19 It's really busy. 00:22:40:19 - 00:22:43:06 A lot of tourists in the wintertime, it really kind of dies out. 00:22:43:12 - 00:22:45:02 So this was in the fall 00:22:45:02 - 00:22:49:13 and I was about to move to Chicago and I was trying to save up money. 00:22:49:13 - 00:22:53:08 So this guy knew that, you know, like things were going to get slow soon. 00:22:53:08 - 00:22:57:01 And so he asked me, you know, what my plans were for the off season. 00:22:57:14 - 00:22:59:17 And I said, Well, honestly, I'm just trying to save up as much money 00:22:59:17 - 00:23:01:00 as possible to move to Chicago. 00:23:01:00 - 00:23:03:02 And he said, Oh, well, I'm actually from the Chicago area. 00:23:03:14 - 00:23:06:07 Oh, what what is going to be bringing you down there? 00:23:06:08 - 00:23:08:13 I said, Well, I'm I'm pursuing acting. 00:23:08:14 - 00:23:10:03 I was like 23 at this time. 00:23:11:05 - 00:23:13:13 I had no acting 00:23:14:16 - 00:23:15:23 Asian or anything. 00:23:15:23 - 00:23:19:07 But yeah, I was going to move to Chicago and pursue acting 00:23:19:07 - 00:23:21:23 and take some improv and just kind of give it a go. 00:23:21:23 - 00:23:25:05 So I tell him this and he said, All right, well, let's 00:23:25:05 - 00:23:28:08 see what you got and think, Well, well, what? 00:23:28:11 - 00:23:29:12 What do you mean? 00:23:29:12 - 00:23:31:16 You know, I made you your your drink. 00:23:31:16 - 00:23:32:11 And he's like, No, no, no. 00:23:32:11 - 00:23:34:17 He's like, I want you to perform for me. 00:23:34:20 - 00:23:36:22 It's like, Move me. 00:23:37:23 - 00:23:39:12 And I said, What do you mean? 00:23:39:12 - 00:23:44:17 He goes, I want to feel something like, Make me laugh, make me cry, make me angry. 00:23:44:17 - 00:23:48:18 Just, just, you know, give me one of your characters and move me 00:23:48:20 - 00:23:50:17 and maybe do a monologue you have prepared. 00:23:50:17 - 00:23:53:04 And I'm thinking, I don't have a monologue for that. 00:23:53:06 - 00:23:54:11 We should have. All right. 00:23:55:15 - 00:23:57:19 And so this was back and forth, and 00:23:58:20 - 00:24:01:12 his wife, I could tell, was a little embarrassed. 00:24:01:12 - 00:24:04:00 She's rolling her eyes at the whole thing. 00:24:04:00 - 00:24:07:00 And I'm starting to feel uncomfortable, you know, because business 00:24:07:07 - 00:24:08:07 is picking up there. 00:24:08:07 - 00:24:10:08 We got tickets rolling.
