That is Straight... Of course
Episode description
In this week’s episode we discuss queerbaiting and the impact this can have on the LGBTQ+ community. A lot of the time we scrape up whatever queer content we can get, just to feel seen, is it better to have no LGBTQ characters than it is to riddle shows with queer coding or queerbaiting. Especially when this trope is born from homophobic censorships.
We discuss stereotypes the community falls into and how we believe we have evolved enough to not have to fit into boxes to be gay. There are more ways to be gay than being a typically masculine woman or typically feminine man.
We question who is to blame for queerbaiting? At this point, are they just including stereotypically queer characters to tick a diversity box? What is the impact on kids who aren’t seeing their family being represented? Is it a marketing strategy?
We realised throughout discussions of Pitch Perfect’s BeChloe, Once Upon a Time’s SwanQueen and Dead to Me that Molly seems to avoid shows that queerbait, or is completely oblivious to potentially queer characters, while Becca is passionately angered by the love stories that could have been.
