40 years ago this year a new detective series with a difference began on ITV.  For the first time it had a woman in the lead role. The Gentle Touch starred Jill Gascoine as Maggie Forbes with a plethora of men under her command. Among her co-stars were Paul Moriarty who played Detective Sergeant Jake Barrett and Bernard Holley as Detective Inspector Mike Turnbull. One of the writers was Peter J Hammond. Here MIM’s Ashley Byrne catches up with them for a special Gentle Touch Reunion.

NOTE: this programme was recorded before social distancing rules came into force and before news of Jill’s sad death.

The Gentle Touch theme tune was composed by prolific songwriter and jazz pianist Roger Webb who also wrote the Hammer House of Horror and George and Mildred themes.

The Distinct Nostalgia theme was written by Rebecca Applin and Chris Warner.
