Episode description

Co-founder Jeff has had a lifelong background in dealing with mental health issues, in particular, OCD.

Jeff explains in detail how OCD and depression occur in the brain, and what feeds them. He explains how these disorders hijack the brain and can cause debilitating mental and physical effects.

He talks about his experience in modern psychotherapy and how western medicine turned his “therapy” into drug peddling which resulted in him getting addicted to prescription drugs for over 18 years.

Soon after becoming a digital nomad Jeff decided to come off pharmaceuticals while in La Paz, Bolivia. In order to motivate him to go through with it, he signed up for a weeklong ayahuasca retreat.

The Beach Commute team decided to share Jeff’s very personal story because mental health disorders are extremely common yet aren’t often discussed because they are so sensitive and sometimes seen as taboo.

On top of that, of our listeners have asked how to manage mental health disorders as a digital nomad. It’s a serious barrier that prevents people from making the transition over to becoming a digital nomad.

Jeff discusses exactly how he manages mental health disorders as a digital nomad, including how to get therapy, prescriptions, and day-to-day maintenance. And he discusses how to put yourself in an environment that is conducive to positive mental health states.
