Episode description

Welcome to this Episode 2 Season 2 of Destination Boarding. We’re here to demystify Australian Boarding schools and dig around into how they can become part of your families’ journey, or take a trip down memory lane if you’re an ex-boarder.

In this episode we’re chatting with Peter Gibbs or “Chicka”. A Gamillaroi man from the community of Weilmoringle, on the banks of the Culgoa River in far West NSW. Peter has over 30 years experienced in the community-development sector.

He has worked in shearing sheds, on cotton fields, for the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, TAFE NSW Western Institute and been an Advisor to both Federal and State Government Ministers.

Mr Gibbs has been instrumental in the establishment of the IPROWD Program, a training model that develops Aboriginal people for a potential career in the NSW Police Force. The concept for this model developed after the tragic death in Police custody of his sister Fiona.

Peter went to boarding school, and sent his children to boarding school with these experiences bringing a valued perspective to the conversation.
