Berly

Welcome to denim wrapped nightmares tipsy exchange Podcast where we explore the supernatural series episode by episode.

LA

over drinks, we'll discuss the lore of gore and what we adore about the Winchesters and their adventures.

Berly

I'm burly, and I'm a new fan of the series.

LA

I'm LA, and I'm here along for the ride. Now let's get to

Berly

La little Burly. Last episode, Dean and Sam investigated several murders at Oktoberfest in Pennsylvania. The first victim had bite mark on her neck to perfect little puncture wounds. That would be like a movie vampire, not like a supernatural vampire, and the second was shredded to death by an apparent werewolf. After a mummy rose from a crypt and strangled a man to death, they figured out it was a shapeshifter, recreating iconic monsters from old movies, because he just wanted to be

loved. And he had a killer moped

Unknown

to this, but it was the best.

Berly

And we still haven't been able to figure out the layout of that house. I

LA

know. A lot going on. All right. This episode is called Yellow Fever. And it is the sixth episode of season four and aired on October 23 2008. It starts out with Dean running, and there's like growling behind them. So I was like, oh god and other like hellhound after him or something. But as he's running, he runs into this homeless guy and turns around and it's this adorable little Yorkie with a little pink bow tie and everything that was

chasing him. Weird. Next up, we are 43 hours earlier than that scene, and the guys are at a morgue looking at the body of Frank O'Brien with the coroner. He's a 44 year old marathon runner and died of a heart attack. And I think two other guys recently, same thing seemed to be healthy lifestyle, everything but they've all died of heart attacks. Weird.

Berly

During the scene, Sam and Dean do insist on an autopsy of Mr. Frank, the 44 year old marathon runner. And it's during this scene that we get the 16th blood splooge of the supernatural series. As the coroner is cutting into the body he apparently hit the spleen because he said oops spleen juice as blood squirted all over Sam's beautiful face and almost gotten his eye. Yeah, it stinks when that shit happens. Rude.

LA

I've never had I don't think I've ever had blood in my eye.

Berly

I wasn't talking about blood. I was trying to make a joke.

LA

Oh. He also made a dean hold the guy's heart. Yeah, during the autopsy, which was nice. Dean was like, oh, and just like the what did he the bone crack or something? Then he cried. Yeah, you could hear him cracking open the ribcage and everything. Well, they

Berly

actually showed him make that first incision as well. Those really good special effects,

LA

which when he started cutting, I was like, Why is there no blood? And then I was like, oh, yeah, he's dead. Anyway, so next up, they are at the police station. And they're waiting on the sheriff. The sheriff pops out and asks the guy why he left these federal agents waiting. I guess he had asked to be not disturbed. But they go over and he asks them to take their shoes off before they come into his office, which I

thought was very strange. They go in and he shakes their hands and immediately starts has this hand sanitizer next to him and he is like into this hand sanitizer, a lot of it. And they're asking him about Frank and you know, what he was, what they were thinking about the situation and the sheriff mentions that he knew Frank since they were in high school and they were there on a softball team named the Gamecocks, which Dean thought was really funny. What else does he say about Frank?

Berly

He confirms that Frank had been acting like a little odd in the days before his death, but he didn't he didn't give a whole lot of information.

LA

Yeah, but he was sure to use the hand sanitizer again before the guys left. As they're leaving and walking down the street Dean sees this like group of four teenage kids on bikes and says that he doesn't like the look of them. And so he crosses the street took a walk down the street away from them, and they end up at what's the guy's name? The reptile guy. I don't remember his name but Mark Hutchins else right, literally, like right before I find it, you say it.

Berly

That's why I didn't answer right away because I saw what you were looking at.

LA

I'm really bad about writing down the names or your font at the time. It's not important. Anyway, so Mike Hutchins is really into reptiles. He's got like a little alligator looking thing. Yeah. Snakes all around lizard. Yeah. Okay, everyone. Yeah, he's sitting there talking to them with a snake around him. Dean is uncomfortable. He does not like it. Oh, and they are asking about the other guy or are they asking about Mark?

Berly

They were asking about Frank. They were okay. This is Frank's neighbor. So they were asking him also like what was going on in the days leading up to his death.

LA

They said that he did seem afraid of everything lately. And he apparently was watching the Wizard of Oz, and told him that the green bitch was after him, which I thought was funny. And he said that, that Frank had gotten better that I guess in high school, he was a real dick. But as he got older, he was better and he married his wife, Jessie, but she died in 1988.

Berly

Which reminds me in the autopsy, Dean did show that the guy had still been wearing his wedding ring. Oh, yeah. He was like, What's this is that from a wedding ring? I don't remember. I didn't see that he was married. So they didn't know he was a widower. But he had like a tan line from his wedding ring on his hand.

LA

Before they leave mark is like, Oh, don't be scared of you know, these this snake around my neck. And he's like, so the one you need to worry about is what forget the next name, but a giant snake comes and just makes herself at home on top of Dean's arm and leg.

Berly

It was one of those like yellow and white snakes. Like I think that's what Britney Spears dance with the MTV Music video where it's all those years ago when she did slave for you wasn't at the same kind of snake. I mean, I guess I think so. I saw in a panel where Jared paddle. Lucky said he hasn't refused to do very many things on a set, but sitting there on that couch while that snake came up and over Jensen Ackles shoulder was one of the things

he refused to do. Like as the snake came up, he got up left set, they were like get back out there. And he said no, he wouldn't go. So they had to change the shot to be close in on just Jensen. Because Jared wouldn't go back to the couch. I don't blame him. It was just a sweet little thing. It wasn't doing nothing.

LA

So they leave marks and Sam ends up coming back to the car from doing some research. And he discovered that Frank's wife actually killed herself 20 years ago. So they head back to the motel. Jean is driving 20 miles an hour. I think he said something about what is it a crime to be

Berly

spurred?

LA

Oh my god, a crime to be safe or something about safety. real nervous driving at 20 miles an hour.

Berly

Sam said it was the speed limit. And they were like in the middle of town. Yeah. Weird. I thought I thought that was odd too. Yeah. Like normally I would think like 30 but 20. Right. school soon, right at night in the middle of night.

LA

As you're driving the the EMF thing starts going off out of nowhere. Sam picks it up, moves it around. And as it gets closer to Dean, it starts going crazy. And Dean is a little panicked and is like, am I haunted? Am I want to freaking out. Then it shows Sam is coming out of a shop like with some donuts or something. And he Oh, he's coming out and he's about

to walk into the motel. But then he noticed that Dean is in the car jamming, just laying there, jamming out and he shows Sam that he now has three scratches on his arm from nowhere. I don't know where. And Sam tells him that it's probably ghost sickness. It makes you anxious, scared. And then eventually your heart goes out from fear, I guess. Right?

Berly

Yeah, he said he had he had called Bobby. And that's what Bobby told them.

LA

So they say that Frank recently went out of town for the softball tournament. And that's how he infected the other two victims that had died. Dean doesn't understand why he's the one that got it when the spleen juice literally went off Sam's face. But Sam tells him that all three victims had kind of the same personality type and that they were all dicks. Team so Dean's having a tough time. I know he's a dick scared of everything.

Berly

He was like you're a dick and Sam's like apparently not like I got splurged on my face and I didn't catch the disease team. So

LA

but Sam says that you know the thing is we've got a gank the original ghost and that will save Dean from his fear of dying.

Berly

I did think it was cute getting to see Sammy kind of be the big brother in this episode. Yeah,

LA

yeah. Because next Dean's like he didn't want to go. Like why are you out here in our rooms on the fourth floor? It's high.

Berly

Yeah, I'd say I've just immediate was like I'll go see if they'll move us to the first and he's like, Thanks like it was it was cute. It was such a cute little interaction seeing Sam just taking care of Dean like, obviously he was giving him a little bit of a hard time. But he didn't give him nearly as hard of a time in this episode as he could have. Oh, yeah. You know, he was watching out for his brother. It was cute. Yeah.

LA

Jeans in the room. He's reading. This was funny. He's reading a book. And I like, all of a sudden, it's just like this guy, person with blood like spewing out of them. And then, in the words, like, highlighted or not highlighted, I'm sorry. bolded it's like you're dying. Again, lose. Sam comes in and says that he found out that Jesse Frank's wife had been cremated so it's not her because otherwise they could, you know,

burn her bones. As they're chit chatting, Dean starts coughing and coughs up a wood chip, which was very bizarre. Yeah. And Sam's like, Oh, we've been ignoring the biggest clue we have you and means like, I don't want to be a clue. So then they go to like a sawmill. Wood mill, whatever it is something. And Dean doesn't want to go in there. Because he's scared. Yeah. I mean, he is just scared of it.

Berly

Sam was trying to load them up. And he didn't want to carry his gun. Oh, yeah, it might go off. He was very confident about like, oh, man, the flashlight. But as they were walking in to the lumber mill, his hand was shaking, holding the flashlight and he was like clinging to Sam's arm with his other hand.

LA

It was like had to lay down a little bit of the flask before they went in. Yeah,

Berly

you had to get some liquid courage before he could even go in the lumber mill.

LA

Sam is the EMF and it's going off like crazy. And they realize that's not going to be any hope with Dean around because it's just going to be reading off Dean. They find some something on the ground that says to Frank from Jesse,

Berly

I think they said it was the ring. Okay. And then they were like, Why the fuck was frank here at the lumber mill.

LA

And they go poking about and they hear something in one of the lockers. And Sam opens it and the cat jumps out from like the top shelf and Dean loses his shit like screams like a girl. Well, I shouldn't say that. screams like a high pitched scream. Terrified of this little cat that just popped out.

Unknown

Just a little kid a Yeah.

LA

They find an ID of someone named Luther garland. And they also find pictures of Frank's wife like, drawn pictures. Somebody has drawn pictures of her that were really good. Yeah. Then out of nowhere, there's a fucking creepy guy in the corner. It was so great. He is like slammed up against the wall like face to the wall.

Berly

It was kind of like the end of Blair Witch which showed the guy just standing in the corner.

LA

So Sam grabs, or he has his gun and lifts the gun up to the guy and kind of like looks, looks to Dean and Dean as you see Dean running out the door. He's out his gun.

Berly

He's out running. Sam shoots at the

LA

guy and the guy disappears. So he's a ghost. He finds Dean outside

Berly

chugging the rest of that flat.

LA

Yeah. They go back to the station and find out that Luther died of physical trauma. While they're there, the little deputy guy is looking at Dean and he's like, Is he drunk? And sounds like no, but he clearly he was like,

Berly

you're awesome. And then tried to put his hand in his pocket and missed his pocket. I was like, what is happening? Are you flirting? I don't understand what's happening in this scene.

LA

You know? Well, so we see the sheriff again and he is freaking out in his office. And he's using one of those. I hated this. What are those?

Berly

Like it was I thought it was aluminum foil, but I'll be honest, I looked away from the screen because it just it made me clench everything. I did not like

LA

it. It's like a metal scrape sponge or something that you use is that what it's a thing? I can't think of the name of it. But yeah, he's using that and scratch his arm and it's all bloody. Yeah, the

Berly

noise. I just Yeah, I had to I had to cover my Yeah, I did not like it

LA

was bad. And as he's doing that, he's hearing these voices. They know what you did. They know what you did.

Berly

He even saw his own reflection in one of his like trophies or something that was like saying that to him. Like they know what you did. It was really creeping.

LA

The boys go and see Luthers brother. He's in I think some sort of like retirement home or something. And the brother tells him that everybody was scared of loser. He was a big dude. He looked angry. But he was like the nicest guy and it shows him like getting a little kitten.

Berly

And that made me think it was the cat. I did do. Yeah. Oh, that was his kitty. Oh.

LA

And he says a lot of people at Luther down including himself. He was a widower with kids and just didn't really look after his brother. Apparently Jessie was a receptionist at the mill. And she was always really nice to Luther and he had a crush Shona. When Jessie ended up missing, Frank went after Luther for it and thought that he had something to do with it. He didn't realize, I guess, at this point, he didn't know that she had killed herself. So he goes and gets Luther. It's

awful. Which Luther, you would think was, I mean, they said he was nice, but he probably could have beat the shit out of Frank. Yeah, like it was nothing. But he was gentle. He was Yeah. You know. So Frank takes him at gunpoint to his truck, puts a chain around his neck and takes off in his car and drags him to death basically, is horrifying. Awful. The brother said, you know, he wasn't angry with Frank anymore. It's not worth it to hang on to that things like

that. And all it was was just fear on Frank's part, and fear just spreads and spreads.

Berly

He was really insightful. What he said actually, yeah,

LA

yeah, I was like, what a wise man. Yeah. So after they talk with the brother, they realized that Dean is experiencing Luthers death, just very slowly. He's got the little road rash on his arm starting. Probably when he was being dragged. He choked on some of the woodchips. Dean thinks it's easy. Like, let's just go find Luthers body burn it, let's be done. But Sam mentions that there's no way they could probably find all that they found all of the parts of Luther because he was just torn to

Berly

bits, which just makes it even more horrifying, because that wouldn't have crossed my mind if Sam hadn't said that. Right? It's true. It's so sad. Dean realizes that their job terrifies him.

LA

He's like, What are we doing?

Berly

We're crazy. Yeah.

LA

He's like, we're going after all these like terrifying things all the time. And he has done he's quitting. He's done. He's gone

Berly

randomly. He's like you're gassy. Like, what

LA

do we do? Like, we want to drive around with her with me for eight hours in the car. I play listen to the same five things I lips or I sing. It's like incredibly annoying. You're gassy. So yeah, after his rant, he just walks off. And then that's where he's walking. And we see him turn around and see the Yorkie. So that's where I guess the beginning intro Yeah, a little Yorkie was adorable. It was so cute. So back at the motel Dean's back from his run.

Being chased by the Yorkie. Sam comes in and sits down and they have this weird conversation and Sam starts saying, you know, you're you're gonna die, you're gonna die again. Gonna go back to hell. As he's talking his eyes flash yellow. And he tells Dean that this is what this he's not possessed. This is what he's gonna become.

Berly

And it was real hot. And I was like, oh, no, yeah. Why is this hot? It's so hot. But Jared has been in the episode all along. And this was the first scene that I was kind of like,

LA

yeah, oh, we've got problems. Remember? Like when he took?

Berly

Yeah, and born under a bad sign? Yeah,

LA

I mean, come on.

Berly

I do like his hair in this season.

LA

I was gonna I think he got a haircut from he's got the lie burns and all that I

Berly

do like his hair. But yeah, this this episode, there's just something Jared paddle like he does and how he carries himself his stature and everything when he's supposed to be quote unquote, bad. That's just very, I find it very attractive.

LA

We have probably, what's wrong with I need therapy? Well, Dean snaps out of it eventually. Although, I'm sure that was probably a little creepy to see your brother that way. And you know, like, that's kind of in the back of both their minds all the time. Like, what is going to happen with them? Yeah. What's going on? Well, Bobby comes to help to save the day. Sam tells him that they pretty much have two hours left. And Bobby comes and brings him this Japanese book and shows off that he could

say speak Japanese. The book is I guess it's on different ghosts from the Edo Edo pure. He said no, I always thought it was Edo.

Berly

I would not Neto.

LA

Well, they discover in the book that it's this particular type of ghost and you have to scare the ghosts to death. Yeah. Which is interesting.

Berly

It was really sad. Like the sweet man, this sweet, cat loving man who just had a crush and had a traumatizing death. And then this is what they do that LA has about I didn't like it. It made me sad. It made me sad. I mean, they did what they had to do it yeah. But still

LA

Yeah. Sam calls Dean to tell him like just wait it out at the motel. We don't need to Dean's like what are you doing? He's like it's just we got to plan so it's a really good plan. We're going to take care of it you know, you just sit tight. He gets off the phone and Bobby says it this is a terrible immediately. They go back to the sawmill. And we see they've they've got well they Sam's on the sawmill. He's got big old gun loaded walking around And then it flashes to Dean back at

the motel. The sheriff shows up and the sheriff is obviously freaking out. He's saying, you know, I know you know that what that what I did Frank killed Luther and I let him go let him off the hook. He starts to fight Dean. So they have a little fight little scuffle, some punches thrown and the sheriff ends up on the ground and starts grabbing at his chest and just dies right there. In front of you know in front of Dean

Berly

Why did you look at me like that? Like, I messed you up? He like gave me a look like, what did I

LA

not you like?

Berly

The other sheriff was flipping his shit. Yeah. And Dean did try to tell him like you have to calm down like breathe. You have to calm down. But I guess the sheriff had the ghost sickness too. So maybe Dean didn't get it in the morgue. From holding the heart. Maybe he got it from the sheriff.

LA

Back at the sawmill go back there. Luther is not popping out like you did last time. So Sam thinks that he's scared to come out. And he needs to make him angry. So he assured us he goes over to the pretty pictures that he had drawn of Jesse and starts tearing them up. Yeah. And Luther shows up right behind him. Creepy. And then we flash back to the motel. It's like going back and forth between the guys and Dean sitting there and little girl Lilith shows up.

She's such a bitch. She's taunting him, you know telling him Oh, don't you remember? Don't you want to go back? Remember what happened and how you we I know you remember. She's like, you know, you know why you got infected. You know why? And she tells him to listen to your heart. And then she starts to starts doing the bum bum a whole bunch and it's really annoying. flashes back to the guys at the sawmill Luthor kind of attacks Sam a little

bit, just a little bit. Sam grabs a big old chain wraps it around Luthers neck and yells to Bobby to like, hit it. And Bobby drives off in the Apollo with Luther dragging him up again. Like you died. And as he's being dragged, he kind of goes up in smoke and he's taken care of

Berly

you do kind of see for a second his head gets ripped off. So I'm guessing that's how he actually died. Now I will say as much as I found this disturbing. Didn't like it. The special effects were done really well. Yeah. In this scene with him getting dragged and all of that.

LA

And like the smoke when he like disappears. Yeah, time before you understand. There's like little twinkles little twinkle lights or sparks. It was

Berly

all really well. Yeah. I don't know how they did that. I'm interested to see whenever we get to the season finale and we do the special features. If they show us how that happened. I'd be I'd be curious to know. Hopefully we'll see. And even though she was her scene was a little annoying. I agree. It was a little annoying. It was still cute to see the same actress, child actress from Season three's finale come back. Right

Unknown

and she's good. She's good apart. Yeah,

Berly

she is good if we if we can't have Katie Cassidy, as well as that would be my next choice too. Yeah, I mean, not that we have all these different options available to us from past episodes just yet. I did think it was interesting when she said it was like dog years and hell. And that even though he was there for four months, it was more like 40 years. Yeah, that he remembers every second. I'm like, how is he adapting this? Well,

LA

yeah. PTSD.

Unknown

Holy shit therapy. Yeah. Well,

LA

as she's taunting him, we're back at the motel. And once Luther goes up and smoke Dean, little it disappears and Dean is better. He's not scared anymore.

Berly

His his arm he had been scratching it more and more as the episode went on, and it was getting really read. It was all gone. His arm is completely healed up. He's fine now.

LA

So they all three made up. Two ends like so you guys rode haul road Hall, the ghost with an iron chain or with a chain and Sam corrects and that it was an iron chain, which that makes sense now, which had

Berly

been etched with magic.

LA

He didn't realize that. Yeah, he

Berly

said it had been etched with magic spells, which I'm just like, okay, Bobby's a badass. Don't get me wrong. But how did y'all have enough time to etch and iron chant? Like was it just you just needed to do it on one link and that was okay. Or Did y'all do that entire long chain? No, man. I mean Sam Winchester and Bobby Singer though, right? I

LA

was gonna say what they can do anything. When they were trying to get Castile to come out. Remember in the barn, The barn was covered and everything. I guess they find the time

Berly

they make it happen. Yeah, Bobby made a whole panic room because he had a weekend off. Yeah, that giant fucking gets busy. He gets he gets shit done. He is efficient with his time.

LA

Yes. But Dean mentions that, you know, good for them upside. I'm still alive. Go team. Yeah, good. Good teamwork. Good. And then Bobby teases Dean a little bit about, you know if he's still scared of stuff, I forgot what he said. But he's he teases them. And then he takes off. And Sam asks Dean, what he saw toward the end when he was, you know, that close to dying again. And Sam's as he's, as Dean's looking at Sam and telling him, I think he said he didn't really see anything, did he? He said

howler monkeys. That's right. Yeah. But as he's telling Sam this, Sam's eyes kind of flashed yellow. Yeah. So he was remembering that little scene that it ends, but then they have a cute little, I don't know, like an extra clip where Jensen is lip singing. And dancing around. I have the tiger.

Berly

So I actually heard that that happened because Jared missed his cue. And so they just kept filming just to see what Jensen was going to do. And that's what happened. So that was a little spur of the moment thing here. And they decided to add it in at the end. He was

LA

when he ended and like they were all like clapping or whatever. He was very happy.

Berly

Yeah. Well, I mean, he put on quite the show. And he didn't miss a single word. Yeah, either. That would have won Ru Paul's drag race Lip Sync Battle. He did really well. He had choreography. He used the car fully for a prop. I mean, for an impromptu performance. Oh, yeah. queued Ouch. Good showmanship was really good. Gore. I mean, we already talked about the blood splurges. Yeah. The spleen juice the spleen Chase at the beginning, and the heart and the cracking and the

noises. Yeah, that was certainly the worst of it. But I have to say the part that made me cringe the most was the sheer of using the metal mesh sponge, whatever that was to scratch his arm. I hated that. So there was a little bit of gore on this. I mean, nothing too. Too bad. But yeah, there was there's a bit of cringe. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Good word for it. Good word for it. What did you adore?

LA

I liked seeing Dean scared like, he was like a little kid. Yeah, ask you. It was

Berly

very cute. I like to he and his asking for help without asking for help. And Sam immediately stepping in Yeah, was really cute. Like how he would change the inflection in his voice to be like, it's just this really high. Like he was very, it was very childlike. And it was adorable. Not to glorify a man child. Yeah, no, but it was super cute. Yeah, the last. Also, I was cute. Because it was

temporary. It was temporary. Yeah. Yes. It's somebody who we know doesn't like asking for help being put in a position where he had to Yeah, and Sam just being automatically like, just stepping up. Like, I'm going to help my brother and the foreshadowing of what's going on with Sammy. The yellow eyes thing like is that what that means? Like, is he still, you know, I was thinking the whole exam going to turn dark side. Like I was thinking that whole storyline was over with Season

Two. Right? And the demon children and all that other stuff. But it's still it's not. It's still lingering. Still there? Yeah. So I'm like, you know, whenever Dean was hallucinating, and Sam had the otherwise, they threw his hand out and Sam and Dean got flung up against the wall. Oh, yeah, I forgot to talk about that. Like we know that he can psychically exercise demons. Does he still have the ability to do all that other stuff like, move dressers and everything?

LA

Oh, no, no.

Berly

There was cute. There was a really cute episode that definitely seems to have some little reminders and implications for potential future stuff to come along. It was written by Andrew dab and Daniel Laughlin and it was directed by Phil's the Grecia the very final shot of Dean. There were like some, I don't want to say flaws, because they obviously left them there for a reason. But like the light flayer that happened in that one episode. There was some of that and I liked that. I liked that

they left that in. Alright, so for lore, the first thing I looked up was the Baru baru, which Bobby talked about with his little Japanese book. I couldn't find a whole lot on this, to be honest. But I found I'll tell you what I found Baru baru are sometimes referred to as the spirit of cowardice. They follow people and cause them to shutter in fear and are born when humans perform acts of cowardice such as running away

from battle. They possess people by clinging to their shirt collars and touching the backs of their necks. This causes their hair to stand on end and send shivers down their bodies. The other thing I looked up was ghost sick This ghost sickness is a pathological grief disorder that is attributed to suppressed or inhibited, inhibited grief. It includes having a distorted view of the grief process that causes a grieving person to manifest their deceased loved

one in their mind. Those suffering also tend to experience bouts of extreme anger and or guilt associated with the death of their loved one. This is especially true if the deceased was under their direct care before dying. A person who suffers from Ghost sickness tends to blame others for their disruptive and dangerous behaviors. Unfortunately, they do not take into account their actions which can contribute toward negative

outcomes. People suffering from Ghost sickness, blame the ghost or spirit of the deceased or making them do and act in certain ways, a typical of normal behavior. They not only blame their behavior on the supernatural, but genuinely believe they have no outward control of their actions. Because they pass on the blame to the ghost. They take no responsibility for their actions and typically suffered no outside consequences. When grief is unresolved, it may lead to

greater issues later on. The typical grief healing cycle may be resolved in the first 12 months following the loss.
