Berly

Music. Welcome to denim wrapped nightmares, Tipsy exchange Podcast where we explore the supernatural series, episode by episode, over

LA

drinks, we'll discuss the lore the gore and what we adore about the Winchesters and their adventures.

Berly

I'm Burleigh and I'm a new fan of the series.

LA

I'm LA, and I'm here along for the ride. Now let's get tipsy.

Berly

Hello, LA,

LA

hello, burly

Berly

as you know, I discovered something new this year. Oh, I know. I discovered a series that actually, I guess I shouldn't say I discovered it. I finally followed the recommendation of several friends and watched a series called supernatural,

LA

who told you to watch

Berly

honestly, I've had multiple friends over the years tell me I should watch it. Oh, wow, that I would really like it. Okay, yeah, the most recent was actually a previous manager of mine who really some she was talking about the show, and I was just like, I don't know. I've never seen it. And she was like, You, of all people have never watched supernatural. I was just like, No, I haven't. And so earlier this year, I decided to watch it, and it has now become the bulk of my

personality. And you have graciously agreed to do a rewatch with me, because when I watched it the first time, I'll be honest, I wasn't really paying attention. So now we're going to go back to the beginning and see what this supernatural series is all about.

LA

Well I did. I did watch, like, when, I think, when it was first came out and was, like, really popular. I don't know that I watched it from the beginning, but I know I watched some at some point, right? But I never kept it. And then as, like, after I realized how many seasons were still going on, I was like, Oh, wow, wow.

Berly

I think that's part of why I never started it, is because back then, you had to DVR something, or buy the DVD or whatever if you wanted to catch up. And I just was, you know, it's like two seasons in already. Oh, it's like five seasons in already. Oh, it's like 10 seasons in already. And so crazy. I didn't want to jump into it in the middle. A lot of work. It's a lot of work, yeah, which is what I ended up doing anyways. I put it on on Netflix.

I wasn't paying attention until, honestly, I think I was halfway through the series when I finally started paying attention because a certain character caught my eye, which we'll talk about when we get there in the show. And then I started paying attention, and would be like, what's that about? And I don't know. And so I finally was like, Okay, I'm just need to restart it, yeah? So before we do that, let's talk a little bit about what the fuck is supernatural.

So supernatural is an American dark fantasy drama created by Eric Kripke, who spent over a decade nurturing the idea of this show before it was picked up by the WB

LA

decade. Wow, yeah. I like his last name. I do too. Kripke,

Berly

like that would be like my gang name.

LA

I wonder. I wonder if, um,

Berly

well, no, never mind. That's an amazing wonderment. Well, no, I

LA

just wonder if he expected it to go on that long, like, if that like, over that 10 year period where all of these ideas just like he was. That's why there were so many, because he had so many ideas over this time span.

Berly

I think when I was researching this that I saw that Kripke originally planned for it to be five seasons. Okay, it should have been, and then you don't know, we haven't watched it yet. That's just a long time. It's a long time, yeah, okay, but it has an average of 93% on the tomato meter. That is shocking, and an average audience score of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. Wow. Okay, so people disagree with you.

LA

I guess, yeah, I guess I, I missed something.

Berly

I did. Think it was cute. Inspiration for the series came from kripke's favorite kids book, the house with a clock in its walls, and he was actually involved in the film adaptation with Kate Blanchett and Jack Black. Oh, I haven't seen that. I haven't either, Not Me neither, so I have no further comment on that. But that's one of the things that inspired it.

Another thing that kind of inspired the series was the 1970s sci fi TV series, colcheck, The Night Stalker, Kojak, Kolchak, K, O, L, C, H, A, K, the Night Stalker, which he was kind of like, X Files investigator kind of thing, I think, okay, I didn't look too much into it. It was on for like, one year, but pictures like show him holding a crucifix with like the shadow on the background. Owned and daimons

and all that kind of stuff. And another thing that helped inspired supernatural is our beloved story about stories Mr. Neil Gaiman's a Sandman. Oh, okay, so a lot of inspiration from other things kind of went into supernatural. It all ended. What do you mean? The series finale finally

LA

ended. The

Berly

series finale ended on November 19, 2020, oh, my

LA

God, oh, good lord,

Berly

long run.

LA

I mean, those guys had solid jobs, right? Three years, had a

Berly

lot of solid things, from what I can see. Okay, so when did it begin? So it started in september 2005 and supernatural starred the famous duo Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. According to Screen Rant, supernatural is immediately compelling because of this leading duo and their topsy turvy, strangely relatable, predictably unpredictable relationship,

LA

I think their looks might have something to

Berly

do, right? Like we're not going to talk about that Screen Rant. Come on. Now, the pairing was supernatural's engine, but what kept that engine running is how Sam and Dean evolve as naturally as genuine brothers would. You can feel Ackles and Padalecki constantly discovering their characters, finding new qualities and quirks that ensure Sam and Dean's dynamic remains effortlessly entertaining with just the right amount of quote,

unquote real. Okay, so over the course of 15 years, supernatural became a household name, winning 38 awards and receiving 128 nominations.

LA

What awards?

Berly

I didn't Google that. Oh, okay, besides being the longest running fantasy show to have ever been broadcast in the US supernatural is also considered one of the greatest fantasy Whoop, one of the greatest fantasy shows of all time. Okay, I could give it up. So we have watched the pilot for supernatural. We sure have what, what are your just overall thoughts, seeing, seeing Sam and Dean for the first time in nearly 20 years, because you haven't watched it since it

LA

was on the air. Number one, they look very young. They do. I mean, it's still good. Oh, they're adorable, obviously, yeah, which also is in seeing them on the first episode aged well, yeah, very well, yeah, like, I would say more attractive now for sure. Yeah, same.

Berly

It's fun seeing just the old nostalgic stuff, yeah, like, the old cell phones, right,

LA

and everything. And I distinctly remembered Dean's car. Well, how can you forget? Yeah, that was one of the things that I remembered from it. And I vaguely remembered the whole storyline with their mom and dad and whatnot. Yeah, I didn't, I was, I don't remember it accurately. I just, you know, vaguely. Was like, Oh yeah, something happened to their mom. Well,

Berly

for our listeners who may not remember the episode accurately, let's head into our first segment of the episode, which is the recap. The recap. Well, it's recap,

LA

okay. Well, it's so we start out and it says 22 years ago in Lawrence, Kansas, which we looked it up. It's a real place, so,

Berly

and if it's 22 years ago, and the show started in 2005 let's do math. What year would that make it go for it?

Unknown

You do that?

Berly

Let me just pull this little handy, handy calculator out right here, right?

LA

It's the show was on for 15 years, so 1983

Berly

Oh, okay, oh, if it's 22 years ago in Lawrence Kansas, it's 1983 Oh, okay, you weren't born yet. I was not, I was you were that was fucking adorable. Oh, I bet I wasn't traumatized yet. All right, so we're in Lawrence Kansas, 1983

LA

Oh, my God. It literally says the date right in front of me. After that line, you made me

Berly

get out a calculator. LA, I

LA

was just testing you. Okay. Okay, so we're there. So sorry. So it's November 2, 1983 and Dean is four years old, and he's going in to say goodnight to his little baby brother, Sam Winchester. Did I say Winchester? Winchester family? Yes, the mother, Mary Winchester, goes to bed, she's sleeping, wakes up, hears Sam crying. Husband's not in the bed, so she goes in and sees it's dark. So she sees somebody standing at the at the crib, and she assumes it's the day. Dad,

and he just says, ew. And she just is like, okay, it's you and and then she sees a light flicker, walks downstairs and realizes her lazy husband's falling asleep on the couch watching something. I'm

Berly

sorry. I'm just gonna say, I shouldn't say. I would maybe, well, I mean, but it's Jeffrey Dean Morgan, true, playing the dad. I'd forgive him. Yeah, it's okay. Yeah,

LA

it's okay. Do what you want, sweetie. It's

Berly

all right.

LA

So obviously she flips out, runs upstairs, screams bloody murder, right? So, and then John,

Berly

who is it? Like, you see the husband, like, is in my kid's room now, yeah, I

LA

would have been terrified, absolutely. So she runs in there, screams, and then we see John running up there. He bursts in the room, and then he's just like, oh, Sam's safe. And just stares at Sam, which, when I was watching it, I was like, Uh,

Berly

did you not remember that you're

LA

like, your wife? Yeah. Like, good, good thing. Sam's okay, but where the hell's your wife? Why did she scream? Like, easy to remember really well, calm and relaxed after that scene, just like standing over the crib, smiling,

Berly

Oh little Sammy, yeah, I

LA

was like, Yeah, okay, we're just cool. Now, everything's fine. But anyway, as he's looking at Sam blood starts to drip on Next to the baby, he looks up and his wife has like a slash on her stomach, pinned to the ceiling and just flames. Dead eyes,

Berly

yeah, dead wide, dead eyes, yeah, yeah. And

LA

so her body bursts into flames. He grabs Sam and Dean. He has Dean take Sam outside as fast as he can. He tries to go back to save his wife too late, so he has to flee the house, and the house like the whole room explodes like a few seconds later,

Berly

right? And let's just say that little baby, Dean, little four year old, five year old, Dean, does not know how to carry a baby, right? Yeah, just like holding it like a football, running down the stairs, running outside, not

LA

supporting that. I'm

Berly

like, is Baby Sam old enough to support his head? Because, my goodness, I

LA

mean, it's a good thing. Sam survived. Yes, he's rocking a little on the flames. Goodness. Oh, my God. Okay, so then we flash forward to present day. It says, And we're at Stanford University, Sam smarty pants. Sam Smarty Smarty sassy pants is at his dorm with his girlfriend, and he hears somebody break in, and then he fights really well, this shadowy intruder. There were a lot of kicks, yeah, I was a lot of kicks. I was like, Okay, this would be like, he

knows what he's doing, yeah? So it was this other guy too, though, right? So then he realizes it's Dean, and Dean's now 26 years old, his older brother and they haven't seen each other in two years. Yeah? They said two years or anything. Yeah. And Dean explains Sam, he needs Sam's help finding their dad because he went missing after going on a hunting trip. Wink, dodge, nudge. Yeah, and some, Sam's reluctant to go, but he does end up agreeing to go

with him and find their dad. So they're as they're leaving, they're chit chatting, and my favorite part is as Dean's like, still trying to convince Sam to go and everything. Yeah, he's, he's, Sam's like, I mean, I told dad I was scared of something in my closet when I was nine years old, and he gave me at 45 already

Berly

said that you, oh, my God, died laughing. You thought it was wonderful. It's just like,

LA

I mean, I'm surprised. It's just in Kansas and not Texas. I just thought it was hilarious. Fun

Berly

fact, Jared and Jensen are both Texas guys. They're from Texas. Boys.

LA

So Sam asks where, what their dad was hunting. And Dean says he was searching for these men who are vanishing from their cars on Centennial Highway, which, I think that's California, right in California, I

Berly

don't know. Let me google it. I guess it doesn't matter. Okay, this says New Zealand, but that can't be, right? Colorado. Oh, okay.

LA

Well, that makes sense, because the other place that dad ends up is in Colorado. Yeah, okay, so hazard the as her walk into Dean's car, Sam asks what their dad was hunting. And Dean explains that in Colorado, on this centennial highway, men are vanishing from their cars, which, I guess I should backtrack and say initially what they're all like. I guess they were obviously raised hunting these they were raised hunting whatever you get

Berly

that vibe whenever they're like, reconnecting and talking, yeah, that they grew up in this world, right?

LA

Just so certain things are mentioning and everything, yeah? Because I think Sam even says like he was, he was done with that hunting, that life or whatever, but they essentially have been hunting what ever it was that killed the mother, right?

Berly

That was the goal. Yeah. The goal was to find what killed the mom. And then all these other but all these other things which kind of happened along the

LA

way. Okay, and so Dean. And Sam, or Dean plays Sam a voicemail on a tape recorder. If anybody remembers those, right? I

Berly

was kind of curious. How did he get the voice, Okay, onto the tape. I

LA

literally wrote Dean's real good with that tape recorder, right? Because I remember back in the day having you rewind, Oh, you went too far fast forward. Oh, you went too far that way. But man, he was

Berly

on it. I remember my old college roommate and I got a voicemail on our old like tape recorder for the landline in the condo, and it was this kid go voicemail,

LA

yeah, they left on your answering machine, yes,

Berly

on the answering machine, yes. And the kid was going, Mom, come pick me up. Oh, my God, that's creepy. And they were like, breathing like, and then they go, mom, pick me up. Mom, that is too creepy. Libby and I left that message on the machine forever. We intended for it to be forever. And then I can't remember if it was me or her, but one of us accidentally deleted it, and we were so upset because it was the creepiest fucking thing we had ever heard in our lives.

LA

Imagine being that mom.

Berly

Okay, so Dean's playing the tape recorder, yeah,

LA

and so the so the voicemail kind of cuts in and out. You can barely hear what the dad was saying, yeah. But basically, it's something that big has about to happen, and they're all in danger, is what you've got to gather from it. And Sam points out that there's also EVP on it, and Dean, of course, is already ready to hit it. And fast forward to that part.

Berly

They can hit it and quit it true, right? He

LA

cleaned up the audio, and there's a hidden message of a woman saying, I could never go home. And Sam reminds Dean, if he goes, he has to be back by Monday, because he has this big time law law school interview. Oh, right, with Stanford, his free potential, free ride. So law school, he's like, I'm gonna go, but you gotta get me back here by Monday. Right now they head to Jericho. Oh, it's not Colorado. It says Jericho California. That's why I was thinking California. Thanks

Berly

Google.

LA

So we're not in Colorado, we're in California, and we see a teenage driver driving down this dark road at night speaking to his girlfriend about how he cannot come over tonight. He has to work in the morning. Okay, remember that, right? And he sees a woman in white standing alone in the dark, pulls over, she gets in and asks him to come home with her. And I love that. He's like, hell, yeah. And just like, peels out. I was like, wow, he's real quick to cheat a fairy

Berly

friend. All of a sudden, work in the morning was not so urgent. Yeah.

LA

I mean, she was very pretty. She was beautiful, yeah. But anyway, poor girlfriend. Well, anyway, they arrive at the house, and it's derelict, like, boarded up. Nobody's living there. Clearly no one's living there. And she just says, I can never go home. And then she vanishes. He gets out, uh, starts to try to look for her. And

Berly

who needs to get laid that badly, right? I mean, if somebody vanishes, vanish in my car, I'm getting the fuck out of there right away. I'm not getting out and being like,

LA

hello, we had a deal here.

Berly

I thought you wanted me to come home with you. Where'd you go? Like,

LA

who really good point. Well, he's a dumb teenager. Dumb teenager, those hormones. But I forget what happened, but he got spooked. Yeah, he drives away. As he's driving, he looks in the rear view window, window, and lo and behold, who's back there. She's in the back seat. He freaks out. Crashes through this barrier, onto this bridge. He starts, it kind of pans out. He starts screaming, and then blood splatters. All we get

Berly

the first blood splooge, the first blood splooge of the supernatural series. There will be many more to come. La, okay, so we are on an official blood splooge count. Well, I

LA

had, I have to say when I was reading some Mary caps, they kept saying blood splatter for when, no, that's a spoon, no, no, no. For when the blood was dripping from the ceiling, when he was at the baby's cradle. It's a blood splatter. I was like, that's like a drip.

Berly

That's like a drip, yeah, it's a post nasal drip of blood into the baby crypt.

LA

All right, back to Jericho, so Sam and Dean show up, I guess this is the next day, and they they're on the bridge, and it's where the guy's power car was crashed, and there's a ton of cops around, and Dean pulls up, takes out a fake ID, and the two brothers question the cops there, posing as US Marshals, which, like when I first saw them, and the way they were dressed, I was like, okay, they, you know, they look nice, whatever. But then when it whenever they said US marshals.

I was like, come on, nobody's gonna buy that. You're a US Marshal. Net out,

Berly

right? And they didn't question the wardrobe. They were like, You look awfully young for Marshalls. Wink, wink. Like, deemed as just like, oh, well, that's kind of you, yeah. And then we just move on, yeah, we just move on. No more questioning it. Oh. But anyway, it's those hormones. Again.

LA

The cop says he knew the latest victim, his name was Troy, and that his girlfriend is putting up missing posters in town, but they have no leads as to where his whereabouts are, nobody. Oh, and that was another thing. Like they said the car was pristine. Remember,

Berly

right? They was like, it is not, there is blood splooge all over the windshield was gone. Oh, was it? Yeah,

LA

I thought that was weird, because, yeah, he was like, I mean, there's no evidence in car. It's pristine. I didn't catch nothing, yeah, so Dean and Sam go to town and find Amy, who is Troy's girlfriend, and she's put, she is indeed putting up signs very

Berly

close to each other. She wasn't really sweating them out. She was like, putting one on one wall and then literally right on the counter. They were all over. In this one like 12 foot area, there were 20 posters and a big old bag full of them. So I was trying to think, I was like, maybe some of them are missing person posters for the other men who have gone missing. Nice of her, yeah, but it did very clearly show her hang two posters right next to each other. So, but

LA

I thought it was rich. This girl, her one of her friends, comes up to her as she's talking to Sam and Dean, and the girl puts her hand on the on Amy's shoulder, and she's like, Hey, are you okay? Acting like, suspicious, like these guys are creeps. I was like, um, if that was me and like you were over there with them, I'd be like, Hey, what's up? Who

Berly

are your friends?

LA

Introduce me. I wouldn't be like, two of them.

Berly

Now there could be two of us, yeah, what's going on? Hello.

LA

These guys are not creeps, okay, yeah, crazy. No one

Berly

can be that hot and be a creep, yeah, well, not in my fictional universe. That's what I'd like to believe. We wish, we wish. So

LA

they go to this local diner, whatever, and start talking, and a friend brings up that there's a local legend there about a girl who died on Centennial highway whose ghost picks up, or, I'm sorry, whose ghost hitchhike it. Want to draw that again on Centennial highway whose ghost hitchhikes and the drivers who picks her up disappear, which sounds awfully familiar, right? The the guys investigate further, they find an article about a woman who committed suicide after her two

kids drown mysteriously. Her name was Constance Welsh, Welsh, and she jumped from a local bridge back in 1981 the same bridge where Troy's car was found and where they the boys questioned the cops. So after that, they go to the they go to a hotel. It's the same hotel their dad was in, and they, the guy mentions their dad was a motel. Oh yeah, the guy mentions that their dad was there and rented a room because it's the same name on the credit cards. I think, yeah, the same fake names

on the credit card, yeah. And so they, you know, break into the breaking what, pick the lock and get in the room. There's, like, a, I mean, things all over the investing like, you could clearly see he's investigating, right? He's got salt in front of the door, around the bed. And I know that's like, to keep out beings or spirits or something, to keep you safe from him, right? Yeah. And he left everything in his room. I mean, there was even a half eaten burger,

Berly

yeah? And Dean, like, picked it up and sniffed it was like, Oh, yeah. And I was like, that burger is, like, a McDonald's burger. And we all know those don't those don't spoil. Yeah,

LA

you could still take a bite, right? It's fine,

Berly

food snob.

LA

So anyway, all from the pictures that he has on the walls, he realizes Sam notices that their dad has solved the woman in white mystery, right? Because he has a picture of constant Welsh, and right above it, it says woman in white. Dean says that dad would have their dad would have destroyed the corpse if he had figured that out. And Sam says maybe the ghost has another weakness. Dean says their dad still would have

dug her up destroyed it. So they decide they have to go talk to her husband and figure out where she was buried. But before they get to go anywhere, Dean is walking outside, and the cops come over and arrest him for impersonating a US Marshal.

Berly

They finally figured it out.

LA

He Luckily, he makes a quick call to Sam, warns him, so Sam takes off and doesn't get arrested. They

Berly

got mad because he called those FBI agents, scolder and moldy Oh my god. Oh yeah, molder and skull. I used to do that all right. Now you did? I know you did. They were like, that little shit. Yeah, we're gonna do some digging into him. Brat, little brat. US Marshal, my ass. Well,

LA

back at the sheriff's office, Dean gets interrogated, and he is now a suspect in the men's disappearances, since they think that was his room printed and had all the guys pictures on the walls, right? Yeah, but the sheriff throws Dean, his dad's diary at him, and there's the there is a number in there that he asks what it is. And Dean is obviously surprised, because he knows his dad and. Goes anywhere without the diary. And so he just plays it off. You know

what? I think what he said, it was this high school locker number or

Berly

something like that. Yeah, his name's Ted Nugent, and that's my locker combination. And he's such a smart ass, I know. Then

LA

it cuts to Sam going to constance's husband and talking, chatting with him. He asks if his dad had been there, and Mr. Welch says yes, that he was there about three or four days ago. And then he asks about where Constance is buried, and He said that she's buried at their old house. They have a little bit of a like a confrontation, because think Dean's like, accuses him of cheating on Sam. Sam starts to say, Dean. Yeah, you said Jean. You got,

Berly

you got Dean on the brain girl. Sam does. Sam kind of starts explaining the mythology behind the woman in white, yeah, and is explaining to him that it's normally a woman scorned from an Unfaithful lover, and is basically insinuating to the husband that Constance is a woman and white. Yeah, the husband gets all defensive, of

LA

course. It cuts back to the sheriff's office. They're still interrogating Dean, but they get interrupted by an emergency call of shooting happening. He leaves Dean cuff to the desks, to the desk, not multiple desks, and he notices a paper clip from his dad's journal. And of course, we know they they know how to pick a

Berly

lock. They know how to get out of a sticky situation. Yeah.

LA

So he does that and escapes and I and then he calls Sam, who is on his way to the Welch house where Constance was buried, and He thanks him for the fake 911, call, because that was obviously Sam. And he says the numbers that were in their dad's diary are coordinates, and their dad has probably left Jericho to go to this, wherever this was. I still think it's odd that he didn't take that with him, but I guess, did he leave that for a clue for them? I

Berly

guess, I assume, so, yeah. Plus, you know when, as we go through future episodes, they refer to Dad's journal a lot, so it's also like a plot device that, okay, you know that that they're going to be using, okay, but sure we'll say that Jeffrey Dean Morgan, I'm sorry John Winchester left it behind intentionally, yeah, so that his sons could come find him and help him out,

LA

well before they can discuss, you know, what Sam found out and everything he is driving and sees a woman in white and just runs right through her right and, of course, that

Berly

was pretty cool. It was I jumped a little bit. I enjoyed that little sequence.

LA

But Dean, of course, hears it and hears like the Sam's in distress, and all of a sudden, of course, rear view mirror. Look who's who's back there. She's fucking in the car. Again, freaking constant fucking in the car. She's

Berly

in the fucking car.

LA

All he she asks him to drive her home, and he says, No. And so then she says, Oh yeah. And the car starts driving itself to her house.

Berly

She's like, Fuck you, yeah, we're going because you're taking me home. You're taking me home. Mr. Sam Winchester. And

LA

then after getting there, she straddles him in the front seat, good

Berly

for her, right? He's like, You can't kill me because I'm not unfaithful. I never have been, right? She's like, Ooh, you will be yourself something like that. Yeah.

LA

So she's like, trying to make out with him and everything, and he

Berly

which not, okay, consent is key, right? Young lady, but

LA

then she starts grabbing at his heart right until he's like, in pain, and lo and behold, who's there to save his little baby?

Unknown

Bro? Oh, which total Wait. He

LA

starts shooting at this ghost, which I was kind of like,

Berly

shot out his own window to his car, right? Like, anyway. I mean, it worked. It distracted her. So

LA

true. Well, Sam takes it upon himself and says he's taken her home. Yeah, all the way home, he

Berly

figured out that she was actually scared to go in the house. Yes, yeah. So he was like, we're going

LA

drives straight into the house, and there's a little bit of a struggle between her and them. And then all of a sudden we see her two dead children at the top of the stairs.

Berly

Yes, that was creepy. I know water coming down the stairs and everything. Yeah,

LA

I don't, I don't like creepy ghost children are the worst.

Unknown

They

end up coming down to Constance, and it was obvious, you know, especially to Sam, that she was scared of coming and facing them because of the guilt of what she did. And the kids take their mom's spirit back with them to the nether world or wherever, and they all vanish into a pool of water on the floor on the way back to the hotel, they figure out that the place the coordinates of their dad left is somewhere in black water. Ridge, Colorado, but of course,

Berly

now we're going to Colorado now. Oh, okay,

LA

but of course, Sam's like, Hey, I can't go. I got my interview. Yeah. So he gets home, and he's, you know, happy to be back. His sweet little girlfriends left him a plate of cookies with a note that she misses them and she loves them.

Berly

And he's gorgeous, by the way. Oh yeah,

LA

I think she was on Friday Night Lights too, and she's been able to some other stuff. I'm like, she's not a bad actress. I don't think, I didn't think so either. Yeah, but he hears the shower on, so he assumes that's her in the shower. And so he lays down on the blood, the blood, well, that's coming the bed. He's just taking a breather, relaxing. And what? What starts dropping on his head, the splatter, the blood. Splatter, the blood. Blood drips

onto his like a forehead. A couple of drops on his forehead. He looks up, and his girlfriend Jessica is up on the ceiling, just like his mom, just like his mom slashed stomach, like

Berly

he had mommy issues, all right, and now you're gonna do this too, yeah. Oh, so,

LA

same thing that happens. He freaks out, starts, starts trying to save her, but of course, big bro Dean busts in, pulls him out. Of course, she bursts into flames, and that's that for Jessica.

Berly

It's a shame, yeah, one thing leads to another

LA

outside, Sam has clearly changed his mind and is packing things into the back trunk, into the Impala. Yeah, the Impala and Dean comes over him to him, and all Sam says is, we got work to do.

Berly

And then the rock music kicked in. Oh yeah. So good. I really enjoy the first episode. It was, I will say it's a really good pilot, yeah, sets everything up so nicely, you know, we know they're looking for dad. We know they're going to be hunting monsters. We know they have a great brother, like I love the chemistry between the two brothers, but we also understand they're a little estranged, so there's going to be some head butting and whatnot. And it's a really good pilot. It sets up the series

really nicely. I agree. Now let's dig into the lore. Okay, so the woman in white is actually a combination of two different legends. One is La larona and the other is the vanishing hitchhiker. So is there any truth to the Lord? The most common version of the LA larona story begins with Maria. It's a Mexican folklore story, by the way, she was beautiful but vain, and married a very rich man. The pair had two children, and after a few happy years together, their marriage

hit the rocks. Oh, her husband apparently began to spend less time at home and ignoring her, but was pouring all of his attention on the children when

he was home. Then one day, Maria was out walking with her children, and she saw her husband with another woman, enraged by what she's seen, she threw the children into the river, staring on as they like just dropped into its murky desk and just died, damn, just in her fit of rage, just this moment of just not too long after that, she realizes what she's done and is immediately filled with regret, so tormented with what she'd done, Maria then drowns

herself as well. Some stories say she died from grief, but most of them say that she drowned and she's buried the next day, but that very night, the villagers hear a woman crying and asking, Where are my children? And she's in a long white robe, like Maria's burial clothes, and is seen like walking around the riverbank

looking for her children. Some versions of the myth claim that when she arrived at Heaven's gates, she was refused access and bandaged to purgatory until she could find the children that she killed later, she was dubbed larona, which actually means the Weeping Woman, and is apparently seen near rivers, oceans and other bodies of water, always after dark and always looking

for her children. Over the years, the story has developed where some people say that she attacks cheating husbands as well, but all versions of the story have something in common. When she cries, you better start running. Oh, oh. Now as to whether or not there's any truth to this tale. Nothing can be

proven. The other legend was, again, the vanishing hitchhiker, which you and I were talking about this while the pilot was playing that we remember a hitchhiker story, a vanishing hitchhiker story here in Dallas, Texas, at White Rock Lake, that.

LA

I think I always heard it as the lady of White Rock Lake, Lady

Berly

of white or Lady of the Lake, is what I remember hearing, or Lady of White Rock Lake, where you would pick her up and she would ask you to take her home, and by the time you got on the other side of the lake, she'd be gone, and there would be a puddle in the seat, is what I've heard. I haven't heard anything further than that, but

LA

I will say, I want to say I watched a movie recently where they, like, said something similar in their town, or something like that.

Berly

Well, I thought it was interesting that Sam, in the pilot, says that the lady in white is the phenomenon where it's yeah, in multiple cities, because we have a vanishing hit hitchhiker story, other towns and cities have a vanishing hitchhiker story. Well, apparently, one of the most infamous Vanishing Hitchhiker stories is in North Carolina, and it's known as the story of Lydia's bridge in Jamestown. She's a vanishing hitchhiker, or lady in white, same thing, like they're always seen in white.

The story begins with a young man driving down a winding road through Jamestown late at night. It's well after midnight on a foggy night, and his eye loads are growing heavy as he makes the trek back to high point through the rainy mist, he just barely sees the ghostly white figure of a pale woman in a white dress standing beneath a curved bridge and waving her long, thin arm in the air. He pulls over to give the mysterious hitchhiker a ride.

When they appear at her home, he gets out of the car to come around and open the door, but when he gets to the passenger side, she's gone, assuming she had simply rushed into her home. He goes and knocks on the door to make sure she's okay, and instead of Lydia and very old woman answers the door, he asks if Lydia is inside. And the old woman says, Lydia's been dead for years. She was my daughter, and she seems like she's still trying to get home. So we've heard that version of the story.

I've heard that version where, like, they get there and they're like, no, she died 20 years ago, or whatever. So there's that. But apparently, a duo of paranormal investigators actually dug up the history behind the legend specific to Lydia and the tale of Lydia's bridge, and in their 2018 book looking for Lydia, they take readers through dusty newspaper clippings and all this other stuff that led them to the grave

of quote, unquote, Lydia. Her name was actually Annie L Jackson, and they haven't been able to confirm what her middle name was, but they're thinking that the l was probably Lydia. According to a newspaper article from June 1920 Miss Annie Jackson, a young lady of this city met almost instant death when riding in an automobile that turned turtle on High Point Road about three miles from high point, which I don't know what turned turtle means, but whatever she basically was in

this accident. The car flipped and her head was cracked against the concrete. She died after her tragic death is when people began claiming to see the ghostly hitchhiker appearing on this specific bridge in that town. So it was years later that the road beneath the bridge is going to be rerouted to a new bridge, so Lydia's bridge is going to just, kind of, it's just kind of disappeared under overgrowth of plants and whatnot. But that is supposedly a little bit of truth, yeah, to

the woman in white tail. Okay, so that is the lore for the pilot episode of Supernatural. So what are your overall thoughts? What are you thinking since I've kind of pulled you into, yeah, this journey with me. La, what were your thoughts on the pilot?

LA

Well, I already said, like, we just, we were just saying, I mean, it's, it's a good first episode. It definitely pulls you in. Yeah? You know, especially at the end, when that the same thing happens to the girlfriend, I would be like, we're we're cursed, right?

Berly

Poor Winchester family, like they haven't had enough happen today. So yeah, but looking forward to the next one. Yes,

LA
