Summary: In the "No Exit" episode, the Winchesters investigate a series of disappearances in Philadelphia linked to H.H. Holmes, a notorious serial killer. They discover a sewer system beneath a former prison where Holmes kept his victims. Joe, a new hunter, uses herself as bait, leading to her capture. The team traps Holmes in a circle of salt and fills the sewer entrance with concrete. Ellen reveals her mistrust of the Winchesters due to her father's death during a hunt with John Winchester. The episode explores themes of inexperience, trust, and the supernatural, introducing the concept of ectoplasm, a term coined by Charles Richet for the material excreted by mediums in trances.

Berly

Welcome to denim wrapped nightmares tipsy exchange Podcast where we explore the supernatural series episode by episode.

LA

over drinks, we'll discuss the lore of gore and what we adore about the Winchesters and their adventures.

Berly

I'm burly, and I'm a new fan of the series.

LA

I'm LA, and I'm here along for the ride. Now, let's get tipsy. Hello, barely.

Berly

On our last episode, it was season two, Simon said. We met Andy who had powers of persuasion and use them in kind of this small town to just have a little perfect life. He said he had everything he needed. He didn't need to venture out and try to take over the world. He was doing good. But people around him started dying mysteriously, which brought the old Winchester brothers into

town to investigate. When they figured out that Andy had the power of mind control, because he got deigned to just give him the Impala. No problem. They started to wonder, could he be behind this what's going on? They also found out that Andy had a similar background to Sam and Dean because of how his adopted mother died. And then they found out another big twist, and he has an evil twin brother, they were separated at

birth. And he's who's been killing these people because he was crazy and wanted that codependent Winchester relationship with his brother too, which was goofy. They end up taking care of Andy's brother, getting him out the way. And he goes on about his life and Hall. In the meantime, Sam is wondering if things are going to turn bad for him. This evil twin went postal Max, who they met a few episodes back was

killing people. And Sam was really worried he's eventually going to snap and start killing people too. Because they all seem to be related back to this demon that they've been hunting since the beginning of season one. And Dean is of course insisting that No, no way, Sammy.

LA

That's not gonna happen. Let it happen.

Berly

So there are we're meeting more of the children, which I know you were hoping for this season. So that's exciting. And Andy was adorable.

LA

I know you really liked him.

Berly

I did. I don't know about this whole mind control thing. Yeah. It didn't didn't. Some of that stuff was questionable at best. True. But he was adorable. Yeah. And that was our last episode.

LA

Well, the episode we're going to talk about today was called no exit.

Berly

That sounds like a Bruce Willis movie title. Yeah. I wonder if it is Hang on. Well, there is a no exit movie, but it's not Bruce Willis.

LA

Oh, darn. But I get what you're saying. Oh, well.

Berly

You know what I met.

LA

Exactly. Okay, so we're in Philadelphia. And we see a girl in this apartment and she's on the phone arguing with her landlord about the place was supposed to be ready before she moved in. But there's like little socket still missing in the walls. And you could tell that it still needs some work. So she gets off the phone. And she has like something dropped on her shoulder. And I thought it was gonna be blood, but it's not blood. It's black and thick.

Yeah, real thick. That is? Yeah. She goes over to one of the missing sockets because the goo is coming out of it and it's dripping from the ceiling on her shoulder still. And as she's looking in the socket, she sees a nasty ol eyeball staring back at her.

Berly

Yeah, it's free scream. Yeah, as any of us were right. There was a little startling watching. Yeah, it was a bit of a jumpscare. Yeah.

LA

So then we go, we're back at the Roadhouse and Ellen and Joe are having an argument that Joe really wants to go on a hunt and Ellen's not having it. She says no, this family's lost enough. You're not gonna go out and do this on your own. And Joe's obviously not happy but she hands over all of her. All the stuff. She's investigated about this hunt that she wanted to go on over to Dean,

Berly

which she had done a lot of work. Yeah, I mean, she got fired. Yeah, go file. Yeah, she handed them an entire case file of I think it was over 80 years. Yeah, of cases that she had been able to connect. So she had put in a lot of work. Yeah, I understand why she was frustrated. I get Ellen's perspective as well though.

LA

Sure. Oh, yeah. You know, so the guys take over Joe's investigation and it's of the this apartment building that we saw in the beginning in LA and they go into the well they break into the apartment, of course. And they're doing the their EMF thing. They find the the black goo, which Dean ends up saying is ectoplasm Sam mentions that it must be one pissed off spirit too. Like, I guess the amount of it he was yelling, was like, wow, he's super pissed.

Berly

He was super backed up. Yes. completely unloaded. All this really

LA

did Yeah. As the guys are leaving, they run into Joe. She's there in the hallway chatting with the landlord, asking about the apartment and tells she suddenly tells him that Dean's her boyfriend and they're the ones that are going to have the apartment and they're going to take it and hands over big ol wad of cash to

Berly

him. Dean says something about where the fuck did you get all that money? Yeah, Joe reminds them hey, I'm a hot ass waitress at a roadhouse that's frequented by mostly men. And I can swindle like she's swindles, just like Dean and Sam do with billiards and video games and all that. So she's had, she's got some cash, right?

LA

Yeah, she does. They take up in the apartment that they've been investigating. And they're going over all the paperwork and trying to get you know, their heads on straight about it. And Joe tells them that over the last 80 years, six blonde women have gone missing from this same building. The police didn't page like didn't connect it really because it would happen every decade or two, you know, so spaced out that they didn't think it was anything. None of

them were violent deaths. It was just, they vanished.

Berly

Speaking of vanishing, they also asked her, Does your mom know you're here? And she says nope. But I'm not stupid. I had ash create fake credit card. Whatever in Vegas. Yeah, she's gonna be in Vegas. Yeah. And I think Dean brings up that Joe sounds a lot like almost most of the victims as well.

LA

We gotta because she's a pretty petite blonde. Yes. Ellen actually ends up calling dean. And asking if he has seen Joe knows anything about where she is. And he lies to her, which he shouldn't have done and tells her he doesn't know where she is. Okay, so yeah. Dean and Joe Lee, there's a lot of tension here. And he just, he's, he's like, she gets upset with him. And he's saying that, that she can't do the hunt, she just doesn't have the experience. He's like, women can obviously

do the job. It's just you're so inexperienced, and especially for her to want to go out and do it by herself. Like her first one, they decided to split up, and Dean's not gonna let Joe go on her own. And she's like, well, if we split the building up into thirds, you know, we'll we'll get through it faster. And he's like, nope, not a chance. So she has to go with Dean. Sam takes the lower half. And they go scan the whole building with

their EMFs. And Joe makes the comment to Dean that at Oh, she asks him if he's going to take her to dinner. And he was like, why would I do that? And she's like, well, you read me so hard. It's only fitting you take me

Berly

to dinner. This is a common female trope of I'm going to prove myself, you know, late teen early 20s trope for female characters male characters, too. It makes sense. I remember being that young, you start to feel like you know a lot more than you do. So I get it, but it's also annoying. Yeah. Because Dean is right. This is a job where people die. And Joe knows this. I mean, her father died on a job right. So for her to be

acting. Entitled is not the word but just not treating the job with the gravity it deserves. Yeah, I can understand why Dean is writing harassed, so to speak. Yeah, I mean, come on.

LA

She's a little too big for our britches. Yes. As they're scanning. Joe is standing there and there's a crate like a little Great. Wood. What is that? air vent like an air vent? Yeah, but it's all like old school and fancy behind her. And we see these black chubby fingers coming out of it reaching for she whips around and of course it's gone. But she takes the EMF and it goes crazy. Dean takes the cradle. The great or whatever it is off and sticks his whole hand in there. His

whole arm. Yeah, he's like shoulder deep in the wall. And Joe's shining a flashlight like on Dean's chest. Like what are you doing? How has that been helpful? Yeah,

Berly

he can't even see what's going on in there. What are you doing with the flashlight? It's just an excuse to touch him. I get it. I'd be doing it too. Oh, yeah. But you're not fooling anybody. Joe.

LA

And Dean pulls out a chunk of scalp with some blonde hair on it, which is super gross. It was really gross. And he mentioned that he has there's a smell in the hallway and he can't place it but he knows he smelled it before. And they head back to the apartment. Dean and Joe are sitting there going over more of the paperwork and she keeps playing with a knife, this little tiny knife and he hands out he like pulls out his big old book knife or whatever and hands it to her and like here's

a real knife. And she hands him the one she had and it has her that he notices it has her dad's initials on it. I think what did he call he was like this one's better than that pic stick that you're playing with. But he hands it back to her and apologizes and then they have a little chat about what he remembers of his dad and the memory she has of her dad. And she ends up saying that the reason she wants to hunt is to feel closer to her dad because

that was his thing. Apparently, Sam has gone off to get coffee where it's the next morning. That's when they're having their little chit chat. But then Sam comes in and he doesn't have any coffee Dean asks, I think does Dean asked where the coffee is?

Berly

Yes, but important, but the reason Sam didn't have coffee is because when he left he found out some drama was happening

LA

another woman he he's like, there's cops out front. And another woman has gone missing. Which I would still be wondering where the fuck my coffee. I like I get I get it. She's got a missing there's cops. But where's my coffee? We did. We did get a little view of how this other woman went bit missing. This one was a little crazier than the first one. It was more dramatic. Yeah, the plaster? Yeah, all that her whole ceiling starts splitting.

And she the phones out. She can't get out of her front door. She's like, I'm out of here. And like, No, you're not, of course, the chubby fingers get her and somehow pull this lady through this tiny airvent that I'm like, I don't think that would be possible. But whatever.

Berly

Supernatural, yeah, if Sam could break out of those tiny windows in that storm shelter thing back in faith, then a ghost can pull you through that air vent.

LA

Joe thinks that maybe they're looking in the wrong place. And she she hands them a picture of a field and they're like, What are we looking at, and she says this is the field that the building has been built on. And look at the building next door. There's bars on the window. It was a prison. It was Moyamensing prison built in 1835, torn down in 1963. There they would execute people by hanging. And it was in the field next to the prison, which is the field where the building was

built. So they decided to look through the list a list of all the prisoners that were in this prison, which is crazy. And just out of the blue samples out the name Herman Webster budget and mentions that he thinks that's HH Holmes real name, which it was.

Berly

I was trying to think what it was called whenever you would take somebody to go get hung and I kept thinking guillotine but that's where you go to get their head cut. All right. And so I just remembered, it's the gallows. There you go down to the gallows. We're in the gallows now.

LA

Terrible. Joe apparently doesn't know who HH Holmes is. So Dean Phil's are in that his victim of choice was petite pretty blondes. And he would you know, keep them for days, mutilated them killed them. And he would use chloroform and dimensions. That's the smell. He couldn't figure out that was in the hallway of the day before. And she's like, alright, well, easy peasy. Let's go find these bones, burn them assault them.

We're done. Say um, tells her that not so easy that he is he is actually buried in town but surrounded in concrete. Because I guess he didn't want anybody mutilating his body, even though he did that to all his victims. karmas I wonder if that's true. Sam also finds out from some of the building the prison building blueprints that there is this sewer system underneath?

Berly

Okay, so I just googled it real quick. According to Philly voice.com. Yes. Concerned that grave robbers would Whoppers would target his remains. After his execution, Holmes requested that he was buried 10 feet into the ground and his coffin encased in concrete.

LA

Well, Sam mentions that hh would I think I already mentioned keep his victims for days and like torture them. And he in this house that he built. There were trapped doors secret chambers, and that's where he

Berly

it was a hotel, right?

LA

I don't remember. I don't know.

Berly

I think it was a hotel. But maybe I'm thinking of American Horror Story.

LA

They see that under the prison. There's a sewer system. And they think like, oh, well, if they can get down there that's most likely probably where he's hiding out and maybe keeping. Maybe this girl that just went missing is still down there. Oh, no live.

Berly

By the way. If you don't know who HH Holmes is, it is a real serial killer from his social dimension that Yeah. And there's so much information so many podcasts episodes and documentaries and everything about him. Check it out if you're into that kind of thing.

LA

Yeah. Before they went down to the sewer systems. They did go into the walls. It got a little narrower for Dean and Joe. So Joe's kind of

Berly

you were like, oh, yeah, during that part.

LA

She's just like very close to him with her but back to him and watching herself between him and the last one. He even says he's like, oh sure to clean the pie. pipes. And she says what? And she's like what? And he said, Oh, nothing. I just wish these pipes were clean. I was like, Oh my god. Anyway, long story short, she goes in these walls by herself without Dean goes down and air duct and the chubby fingers get her. Yep. Ellen calls Dean again and she knows Joe's there. And she's

pissed. Yeah, rightfully. Yeah, rightfully so. And she says she's hopping on the next plane out. She'll be there. I think she says tomorrow or something like that. And we do see Joe she's in this. So we're down. She is in a sewer system. And it's it's kind of strange like in the wall. There's these little like chambers. Yeah, I couldn't figure out what Yeah, but he that's where he has the girls Joe's and one and across from her is another one where

Teresa's in it. And he comes to Joe's little thing, and there's just a little tiny strip that she can see out in his mouth. And he's like, got it looks like he has he's covered in soot, or soot slit, slit thump or something. And his lips are black. And he's like, saying she's beautiful or something and it's just creepy. Yeah. And he reaches in and snatches a chunk of Joe's hair.

Berly

Like shows his hand like reaching over and there's nowhere she can go. Yeah, so she's just like, laying there being like, Oh, get the fuck away from me. Yeah. Oh, Lulu. And

LA

like, the whole time I'm like, where's her pick? Stick? Stab him in the ham. She did what she what she eventually.

Berly

I thought that was a cool little addition to the knife that it was pure iron. Because otherwise honestly, what was that knife gonna do? But whenever she revealed that was pure iron. I was like, ah, that would be handy. Right for a hunter. Well, the boys, you know you normally do what? You normally go the boys are boys.

LA

Yeah, our boys. Our boys find the entrance to the sewer system. It's kind of funny though, in this scene, because it flashes to them walking down the sidewalk. And Sam's got a little like metal detector. And it just looks really funny. The two of them walking down the street. They do. It's

Berly

like if I saw them, I'd be like, hey, la. Those guys are hot. But they seem like they're a bunch of weird. Stalker. They do. What are they doing?

LA

Yeah, but they find it it's it's in this little area near the near where the prison was. And they get down there. Fine, Joe, like get her out of her little enclosure and get Teresa out. And Dean's like hey, you know, you know before earlier when you mentioned you using you as bait not a good idea. I wasn't gonna I wasn't having it. Well, we're gonna have to do that now. I mean,

Berly

Joe basically used herself as bait anyways by going off on herself through Yeah, which she did recommend the idea. So I don't know if that was intentional, or if just yet again, she was too big for her britches and just thought that she knew what she was doing. Got caught? Who knows?

LA

Well, we see her sitting in the middle. The sewer system looks like a little like octagon kind of.

Berly

It was a cool set. Yeah, I just highly doubt any sewers actually look like

LA

that. Right? Yeah. So they have set up this whole plan. And Joe is sitting in the middle of this little octagon area with that's where the little wall enclosures were and then there's different paths. Yeah, paths or events or something. I don't know. So we see h h coming up behind her being a real creep. She waits till he's like pretty close to her. And I think Dean or Samuel is now I don't know, in the span of time they were down here and the little equipment that I saw them bring

down. I don't know how they did this. But somehow they had all this salts around the octagon, in these bags or something and they just like drop it. And so the hall of the salt falls, and it's in a circle. So he's trapped in there. He can't get out of that circle of salt.

Berly

I mean, maybe they went back up like we don't know, I think they cut the black or something true. But my question is, how did H H not see them doing all this?

LA

Exactly? Oh, well, we're getting too

Berly

into it. Maybe he was scouting for another blonde. Yeah, true. It doesn't matter. So that was a lot of salt. It was a lot of salt.

Unknown

And he who they all get out they are they're all out of the sewer now. And Joe's like, Well, what do we do now? You know, to trap him. And Dean shows up with a concrete truck. And they fill in the entrance with concrete. And they think that will hold him in there until hell freezes over as Dean says, which I'm like, what if the concrete messes up the salt line? Which I guess Wouldn't he be able to get out of the salt line? Like isn't it the salt

that's keeping him in there? Not the concrete true?

LA

Oh, well, well, maybe. Yeah, I don't know. We think too much into it. It's then too. After that after that. It cuts to everybody's back in the Impala driving back to the Roadhouse, and there's somebody else in the car with them. Miss Ellen is there, and it is awkward. She's pissed. Yeah. Dean's like, oh, you weren't kidding about getting that, that first flight out. And he tries to turn on some music. She turns it off, and it's like, whoo. I do not envy that any of them in that

car. forced them to.

Berly

Well, Sam didn't lie to her. True. Well, yeah, he say I was actually back there kind of trying not to laugh, I think probably because he didn't. He didn't lie to her on the phone. She's pissed at Dean.

LA

Yeah. When they get back to the Roadhouse, Elena and Joe are arguing again, Ellen's basically just saying like, I'm not going to lose you, too. And, uh, you let those boys use you as bait. And she's like, or Joe says they had her back the whole time. And Ellen says, Like father, like son or something like, son, like father, something like that. And Joe says, What are you talking about? Ellen reveals that when Joe's dad died, she was on a

hunt with John. And she doesn't give me any details or what exactly went down, but basically that they went out on a hunt together. He they both usually worked alone. And only John came back. Dean and Sam are outside and Joe busts out there and she's not happy. She doesn't want to flirt with Dean anymore. Yeah, no, that's done. Yeah. He's, you know, he's he comes up to her. She's like, Don't touch me. And he's trying to, you know, be like, I'm sorry, like, what's wrong? And she tells him

what her mom revealed. And just tells them to get out of there. Just go. That is no exit.

Berly

This wasn't a favorite of mine.

LA

Yeah, well, I know when we were watching it, I was like, really irritated by Joe. And how, like, hot she was for Dean and whatnot. But then I was like, Oh, I'm probably just projecting because I was probably doing the exact same when I was 20.

Berly

That's what I was saying is I totally see late teens, early 20s. This is the epitome of I'm an adult. I'm a grown up. I know what I'm doing. And people going through that. You know, you're everyone's annoying at that age. Yeah, everyone is annoying at that age. I think I don't know if we were supposed to be annoyed by her. It's annoying. But it's true. Yeah. Also, yeah. You know, and I appreciated that we got to know Elon and Joe. More. Yeah.

LA

Well, I thought it was also kind of weird that Elon had been so nice and willing to help the boys. And then kind of revealed this big thing where she didn't trust them and stuff. So I thought that was kind of odd. Since she had been so nice and helpful. Prior,

Berly

my personal take on it wasn't so much that she didn't trust the guys as in, I don't think you're trustworthy, but just who taught them how to hunt. Their daddy? Well, your daddy obviously doesn't watch other people's backs when he's working with someone he doesn't normally work with. So why would I want my daughter to work with you? I get that, you know, not as, don't talk to me. Don't come to me for help. But as in, but I'm not going in the field with

you. Right? I don't trust you to have my back whenever shit goes down.

LA

Forgot my point. So yeah, okay. I had a rebuttal, but

Berly

I'm sure there's a rebuttal in there somewhere. But just with that mindset, I can see her being like, yeah, here's some information. Here's ash. Oh, y'all are welcome here any time, but I'm not going out in the field with you. If that makes sense. Yeah. Because they didn't get her husband killed.

LA

Well, also, I'd like to know what happened. Because did John, it was like John really responsible?

Berly

I don't know. They keep revealing little tidbits that keep making me think maybe John wasn't the greatest guy. Well, I mean, obviously it wasn't all right. So maybe, but yeah, I'm sure they're gonna come back to that. Yeah, I don't do well with that. I need to know what happened. I need the tea. Yeah. It was a cute episode. Just not one of my favorites. And Joe.

Joe was annoying. I agree. Yeah. But again, you know, like you said, we're probably projecting a little, because we were probably both like that when we were young.

LA

Yeah, I know. It was really annoying, especially with the guys that I like to, like, I just want you know, you just want their attention.

Berly

Yeah. So for the lor. Hi, I asked the question is ectoplasm real? So a lot of ectoplasm This is the first time we've seen ectoplasm in the world of supernatural. And it actually is a defined term in science. It's used to describe the cytoplasm of the one celled organism. The amoeba, it moves by extruding portions of itself and flowing into space, extruding portions of itself. Lily ectoplasm is the outer portion of an amiibos of an amoeba is cytoplasm. Well, endo

plasm is the inner portion. Are you really interested so

LA

far? Already lost

Berly

ectoplasm is a clear gel that helps the quote unquote foot of an amoeba change direction. So yes, ectoplasm is a real thing.

LA

Okay. But it doesn't have anything to do with the supernatural.

Berly

Well as far as the supernatural goes, the term eco plasm was coined by Charles rich Shea, the French psychologist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1913. For his work on anaphylaxis, am I saying that right? Amen. A Phyl axis. Yeah. That, so he coined the supernatural kind of

ectoplasm. The word comes from the Greek words ek dos which means outside and plasma which means molded or formed, in reference to the substance said to be manifested by a physical medium in a trance, psycho plasm, or tele blossom refers to the same phenomenon, although Tella plasm is ectoplasm that acts at a distance from the medium. So ectoplasm comes from the median. No, I don't know. We're gonna move forward.

LA

Sounds real complicated.

Berly

Idea. plasm is ectoplasm that molds itself into the likeness of a person. So it's ectoplasm but it looks like a person. Okay. And reshape His name is spelled ri CH, E T. I don't know if I'm making it fancier. Yeah, who knows? Who knows. But him like many scientists of his time, was interested in the nature of the material said to be excreted by

a medium. So ectoplasm was supposedly excreted by a median when they're like, in a trance or something, okay, or possessed or whatever it is that happens to mediums when they're talking with ghosts. And that could allow a spirit to interact with the physical realm. How ectoplasm looks, it's not like the slime that we've seen in Ghostbusters and whatnot. accounts from the earliest 20th century describe ectoplasm to

look like a gauzy material. So more than movies where you've seen like the white, kind of gauzy chiffon material where it's like a person or something. That's more what the scientists claim ectoplasm actually looks like okay. Some have said that it starts out translucent and then materializes into something visible. Others said that it glowed faintly. And even more people have said that a strong odor is associated with it. Other accounts state that ectoplasm disintegrates upon

exposure to light. Most reports describe ectoplasm as cool and moist, and sometimes viscous. Lu Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock working with a medium identified as Eva See, stated that ectoplasm felt like a living material moving and responding to his touch.

LA

He had the Magic Touch,

Berly

I guess so I guess he saw his medium excreting ectoplasm and decided to reach over and touch it. Weirdo for the most part mediums of the day were frauds, Neil You don't say. And there ectoplasm was revealed to be a hoax. So they they made fake ectoplasm oozing out of them? Yeah, how they did that how to do that. This article does not cover that. Okay, modern day. While videos of ectoplasm abound on the internet. There's little information about samples and

test results. More recent samples have been identified as human tissue, or fragments of fabric. So that's real ectoplasm and supernatural ectoplasm. In a nutshell, interesting, human tissue.

LA

Yeah. How's that happen?

Berly

I don't know. To close it out. We're gonna quote When Sam and Dean are checking out the apartment and they first find the ectoplasm Dean says, Well, Sam, I think I know what we're dealing with. Here. Is the Stay Puft marshmallow man. Cheers. Thank you for listening to denim wrapped nightmares.
