Berly

Welcome to denim wrapped nightmares tipsy exchange Podcast where we explore the supernatural series episode by episode.

LA

over drinks, we'll discuss the lore of gore and what we adore about the Winchesters and their adventures.

Berly

I'm burly, and I'm a new fan of the series.

LA

I'm LA, and I'm here along for the ride. Now let's get tipsy. Lm la Hello Burly.

Berly

It's our mid season episode, whatever you want to call it. A lady told me recently that she followed Genevieve paddle lackey on Instagram. And she was angry almost when she was like, I like her.

LA

No, I wasn't angry. Like man.

Berly

Fabulous, gonna be

LA

fabulous and cool.

Berly

And we still don't have any takers on our throttle offer. The worst anywho between the Christmas episode and the episode that we're covering today, way back in like 2007 2008 they launched the supernatural Official Magazine. It was published by Titan magazines. And the first issue was released on November 27 2007. It ceased production at the end of 2012. And we managed to get a hand on one of these magazines and took a flip through. This was almost more nostalgic than the show itself.

I felt like flipping flipping through this magazine seeing like the merch pages and like all of that, that didn't have some interesting information in it though. There's a an interview with the actress who plays Jo, her name is hope I'm pronouncing this correctly. Alana tal al Oh, and a towel. I think that's how you pronounce it. And it's a really cute

interview. One of the things that she said in the interview that I appreciated because I agree with it was she was asked when we first meet Joe, she's one tough cookie. Was that how you saw the character as well. And Alana Tallis said when she did the first episode, she was under the impression that Joe was very experienced and was already a hunter, because of the way you know, they introduced her when she came out with the gun and clocks, Dean and all of that kind of stuff that she was

she was already in it. And it turned out later, you know, she found out that she wasn't experienced that, you know, mother hen was keeping her close to the nest and that she hadn't had a chance to go out there. So she said she really liked that. And it was interesting for her to have Joe go through that first hunt. And get to portray that the inexperience and us getting to see Joe grow. And I really liked that about her

character as well. I did not like no exit the first time we watched it we both thought Joe was kind of annoying, too big for her britches or whatever. But then by the time you see her again and you see that she was kind of humbled by that it was good character development. So I agree with her that I ended up liking that I ended up liking no exit. In hindsight. Yeah. That they had her go through that experience. Nice. What about you? Did you find anything you'd liked?

LA

I liked there was a little section on the top five motel rooms of shame. of shame. The so their top five. The first one is the disco room from provenance. Oh, yeah, it was like a throwback to like Saturday nights of 1970s. And the wallpaper like clashed with the rest of the decor and it was just it was that vibe. It had that

Berly

bar that bar with the martini glasses on it. Yeah, remember that?

LA

And then number two is the naughty house room and houses of the holy naughty house. The vibrating bed. Oh, and the red padded walls. And then the stencils of the new lady on where the screen area and Mudflap are looking. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It said either this motel is in the red light district or the decorator was was feeling a little frisky.

Berly

That's funny.

LA

Number three is the Western room from Hell House. It was the one that had it looked like the Alamo painted on the wall and then like huge cow horns above each of the beds. Yeah.

Berly

Wasn't there an armadillo somewhere? Yeah, stuff.

LA

Number four is the beer room from night shifter. And it was another kind of celebration of 1970s Sex and dead animals. And that the room was basically a dedication to worshipping beer. Okay, and I don't remember that one. I don't really either, but it was it probably smelled of stale, stale beer, but at least the minibar had been full. And then the last one is this whirly room from hunted that had giant roses and huge swirly circles on

the wild wallpaper. And it said if a room could personify a bad acid trip, this one wouldn't be far off.

Berly

Does it say if they built the motel rooms? Or if these are like Surely these aren't motel rooms are finding in Vancouver?

LA

I don't think so. Because like it said it said it. Maybe the decorator was feeling a little frisky but

Berly

well, I don't know. They had to have built these. These have to have been set?

LA

I would think so. Yeah. Because they didn't like travel with like the show wasn't traveling. So yeah. I don't think that they had no, yeah, so I'm sure it was a set and they just always switched it up.

Berly

Nice. The second thing I found in here that I liked was an interview with Kim manners, which I didn't really know who Kim manners was, I had never heard of him. I've not paid attention to that kind of stuff to be perfectly honest. Until we told ourselves we were gonna start paying attention to that stuff. And I've noticed that when we've looked at episodes that directors have done and what not, his name keeps coming up over and over and over again. So I glanced through the

interview with Kim manners. And one of the things he was asked was, What are some of the obstacles that you've had to overcome to get particular episodes or scenes shot? And he said in Vancouver, you run into them constantly, the weather is probably your number one challenge. Charles basin directed the episode roadkill up on a mountain, and it was pouring rain for three days and nights. Miserable, freezing cold

conditions. Another thing that happens is you lose a lot of locations which I've never even considered some of these things. Someone changes their mind. A higher authority says they don't want any filming in a place you thought you had. But the weather is the biggest challenge. Today is beautiful, but it's supposed to start raining tomorrow. It's been winter all summer. We've got one of the greatest art departments in the world. J Mark knuck. If I said that right.

Chris Cooper, Chris Sneden these guys bust their asses and never complain. They work 24/7 We lit and built an entire cemetery with crypt and greens in five days. The crews up here are miracle workers. Wow. Yeah, like we've noticed the weather in some shots, but I just never haven't thought about it that much. So that was just kind of an interesting perspective. I thought Yeah. Like, I'll be posting pictures from the magazine on our social media

channels. So check those out on Instagram tick tock Twitter. Last episode. It was Christmas time. Sam and Dean investigated a series of murders where the victims were pulled up through the chimney. And Sam realized they were dealing with some pagan gods some old winter still Solstice pagan gods. Also while they were hunting and dealing with these pagan gods, Dean was encouraging Sam the whole time to celebrate Christmas and because it was going to be his

last one. And Sam didn't want to do it because it was going to be his last one. But in the end, Sam remembered that Dean used to make Christmas happen for him when they were kids. And he decided to make Christmas happen for Dean this year. And they exchanged presents and it was a very cute Christmas special episode based in a horror themed show. I liked it.

LA

Yeah, it was cute. Well, this episode is titled, Matt Malleus mill. Got it. Malleus Maleficarum This is the ninth episode of season three and premiered on January 31 2008. All those years ago,

Berly

I'm a dumbass I was just about to be like, Oh, New Year's Eve. Like a month off late just a little.

LA

Well, we start out with this couple coming home from some fancy event. I think he's in a tux. She's in a pretty black dress like diamond necklace, choker earrings. They're ready to get it on. And she says she needs a minute. So he I don't know why he took off to go. Oh, he went to go get a bottle of wine at 99 Yeah, she goes into the bathroom and opens up a brand new toothbrush, which were like, oh, that's odd. I didn't even notice it. But you were like, Oh, she's got a brand new

tooth. Yeah, she's taking it out of a box. Yeah, you know, and so she starts brushing your teeth and I was like seem and then it flashes to somebody unwrapping a very used toothbrush from a cloth. So that's obviously hers. And I knew it was gonna start happening and I wasn't excited about it not happy. And of course, she starts digging around in her mouth with her finger and a tooth comes out. She pulls it

Berly

out so la wasn't even watching the screen during yes, no,

LA

I was I can't watch stuff like that. It's that an eye stuff with eyes. I just can't

Berly

So it was showing like her brushing your teeth and cutting back and forth between this woman where it was just showing the woman's mouth and she's obviously saying like some incantation and it shows her cut her palm and squeeze her palm over the toothbrush like dripping blood on to the toothbrush. And that's when Janet and the fabulous little black dress with the new toothbrush starts going like oh, like poking at her teeth and like pulling her teeth out of her mouth.

LA

I made the Note that to me. It was like the most god awful opening scene of it was so uncomfortable and awful. And I was it was sad. Janet seemed like a nice lady. I was like man who doesn't who did this to her.

Berly

She had some great gams like they shattered when she when her husband unzipped her dress, and it fell around her ankles. I was like, Oh, yes, calves. No more. No more. Yeah. She spit out all her teeth and died. Yeah, it was awful. Yeah.

LA

And of course the boys come on are talking to her husband. Sam's poking around looking at things. And he goes in the bathroom and pokes around until he finds a hex bag underneath her sink. So he knows that this is some some witchy shit. It's gone down. Dean's out there talking to husband asking you know if there's anybody she had issues with and he was like, he was like, No, everybody loved Jana. But then he kind of made this face like, oh, like something had come to him. But

he didn't tell Dean. I badeen noticed it too. And they get back into her. They're walking to the car. And Sam shows him the hex bag. They realize that it's some magic black magic old black magic going on. And I think a dean makes a comment like, who's the Blair Blair? Was the Blair Bitch.

Berly

Yeah, he was like a fucking hate witches.

LA

Yeah. I thought that was funny. Yeah. So they're like they decided they've got to figure out there's some obviously some witch hunt around or a coven. Then we're at some little suburb neighborhood. And this lady's on her knees in the garden and another lady from her. I guess it's her neighbor is getting her groceries out of the car. And you can tell she's like, trying to book it inside. But the lady doing the gardening yells at her is like hey, you know, are you okay? You didn't

come to blue. I'm having trouble with my beat.

Berly

You are local.

LA

She says she was worried cuz she didn't come to book club last night. And the girl the girls like No, no, I'm fine. Promise. I'm fine and just like rushes inside.

Berly

Shady. She was acting shady for sure.

LA

She gets in the house and opens the oven. And there's just like, what you would think is like this gorgeous, gorgeous sleep cooked chicken, like a whole chicken, broccoli, some veggies or whatever. But then she pulls it out and it's covered in fucking bugs. And whatever. They maggots maggots.

Berly

You also noted she had a bandage on her hand when she I missed it. When she came in. There was a bandage around her hand. Yeah, so So we're like, this is the Blair bit right?

LA

I was like, once again, I couldn't look at the screen and I was grossed out and I said, I thought to myself, this episode is almost as bad if not worse than bugs. So far. I know I'm not.

Berly

And I had to recap bugs. So it wasn't that big of a deal that you weren't looking at the TV that much but definitely for this one. I was like, oh shit, yeah, LA is doing the recap. And she can't watch the TV.

LA

Oh my god. But well, then her husband I forget her husband's Janet's husband. Paul is having a real sad, sad moment. He's in his car alone. Got a burger? I don't know. It's really terrible. But it was I was just like, Oh God, this is just got turned on the music and just eaten a burger himself. And we see what's her name with the bandage and the chicken. She's like, make doing her little incantation or whatever and says that this meal was for him and

stabs it. And so then you see him kind of set his burger down to do you mess with a raider or something. And then again, once again, I wasn't watching, but I know he picked it up and built into it. Right?

Berly

Yeah, yeah, it showed him which is this was in hindsight, this is kind of weird. Like he said, his burger down in the passenger seat. So the camera could show that maggots started climbing out of the meat. And he like took a drink from his soda and then was messing with the radio. Okay. And then he picked the burger back up and took a bite. And like made a face and

looked at it. And it showed that like everywhere where there had been the burger patty like the meat patty was all bugs like maggots being like literally like squirming against each other and all that would probably never stop growing up. Yeah, and then he started choking. Yeah, like he like gasped and was like, oh, like choking on it.

LA

But the boys show up randomly how they knew where he was sitting alone in his car.

Berly

Maybe he was just sitting in the driveway in front of his house.

LA

Maybe that's even more sad but okay. They show up and deeds trying to help the guy like, get choked up whatever it is. Sam's desperately like feeling around in the car for the hex bag finds it pulls out this cool little torch. It was really cool torches the thing I want line and immediately I was like, Oh, they blew up her game. They really messed up because he's fine now,

Berly

for sure her shit blew up on fire. And she was like, oh,

LA

so yeah, she she can she can tell if something happened, somebody fucked or shut up, as she's like, she's like thumbing around in this book that she has all these different spells which biolay the out cover of it looks like it's a cookbook of like flowers on the front.

Berly

It was like a binder with these like sheet protectors, those plastic sheet protectors with all of her spells, and it was the cutest little spell book you've ever seen.

LA

But yeah, she's desperately searching. And then all of a sudden, there's this slice down, like vertical II on her wrist. And I'm not talking like a cut, it was sliced open. Once again, not a thing I like to see. It was horrible as it slices her, like three times, I think on both wrists like wide open slices. And she falls forward and just dies right there.

Berly

It was great special effects on the wrists. Like if you look at it too long, you can tell that it's fake, but for the time, excellent special effects. And she had a fabulous rack. So when she fell forward, they had her fall forward on a glass table. And I had asked earlier when we were watching the scene who changes into lingerie to go do their spellwork Well, I guess that's why Yeah, because her boobs squished against the last table. I was like fab like good for you.

LA

The so then the boys. They go back and talk with Paul again. Right?

Berly

They didn't leave him they just the scene just cut away. Back. Yeah.

LA

So yeah, they're kind of hounding him. And like, Come on, man. Like who would have done this? And I think he mentions, oh, there was some girl real manipulative and she was like all after him.

Berly

When she straight up had an affair. He was like, we were having an affair,

LA

but he was like, I ended it like a week ago. She was just like too much and blackmailing me. And so they look they're like, Okay, this is probably our girl. And they they go to her place find her dead. I liked that Dean mentioned like, why, why? Why did they always have to take the rabbits and kill them? Yeah. I appreciate it. Okay, I stopped taking notes here for a minute because I forgot that I was recapping it. So they

Berly

are looking at her wrists. And at first they think, okay, she tried to take out Paul, and then she killed herself like, right, whatever. But Sam is down on the ground looking at stuff that she pushed off the table when she fell forward. And he notices there's a hex bag under the table. And that's when they're like, oh, fuck, like, there's more witches. The Witches are killing which is now shit.

LA

And then what was next? They go and talk to the friend.

Berly

Well, no. Then we see book club. Oh, okay. And that husband is all like,

LA

hey, like I knew this isn't a real book club. Yeah, it's all dish and gossip with you ladies. Yeah. And they're like, but yeah, I guess the one girl who had been doing the gardening, she walks in as though he's talking to them, give them giving them shit. And he leaves and she's like, You guys didn't tell him? I thought he knew. Now did she mean about the book club or about the lady being killed? I have no idea. Okay. Yeah, I was a little confused on that, too.

Berly

Yeah, he was teasing them and her thinking that he was being serious, like really telling them that he knew it wasn't a book club because no one no one shows up. You're with a book anymore. And then they were like, talking about how the body had just been picked up. And so I don't know. I don't know what they were talking about. I don't think it really matters, though.

LA

True. But though the gardening lady should have really found their names. But she, she's, like, apprehensive and says, like, maybe we shouldn't be doing this. Like, look what happened to her neighbor. And they're like, We have a word in it. And I forget what they said, Oh, the one lady her pottery business is taking off. I forget what would have happened to the other lady. She had

Berly

one raffles and her husband got promoted. And then the third lady. I didn't notice it at the time, but they didn't say anything about the third lady. Yeah, winning anything or doing anything which ended up being important later.

LA

And so she's like, Okay, fine. We'll keep doing it. And they pull out all their stuff and start doing another

Berly

chant or whatever. Yeah. When Sam and Dean show up to interrogate the neighbor's garden lady is out there working on her herbs and our CME sat sassy pants. Smarty Pants, is like, Oh, wow, you must really have a green thumb for these herbs to be. What do you say blooming or growing out of season? Yeah. And he said he was agent Bachman. And Dean introduced himself as Agent Turner. And I'm guessing that was a reference to Bachman Turner overdrive, which the song I know by them is let it let it

ride. Oh, go ahead. So I caught a reference. Look at you. I haven't got one in a very long time. So I was proud of myself when I heard them say the names. I was like, wait a minute, Bachman turn. I know that I had to google it. I didn't know it off the top of my head. But I knew I knew Bachman Turner. So let me pat myself. pat myself on the back.

LA

And as they're interrogating her, the blonde and the other lady that were in the book club, walk up, Dean asks for the blondes name and she says Mrs. Or he's like, I think he called her Miss and she says Mrs. Rebecca no Rene Van Allen, like real proud of her name and asked if if he needs her to spell it and he's like, I think I'll get by but she's not playing around.

She's like this has just been so hard on the death has been so hard on us and taking a toll and you know, just basically trying to like brush them off and get them to fucking leave. Yeah, she's not playing around. They take off and they're arguing download st about Sam all of a sudden is like these, they need to be stopped you know, we need to put an end to this people are getting killed. And Dean's like what's going on with you like get all of a sudden you're like real? It used to eat you up

killing killing people. And now all of a sudden, you're like gung ho to do it. You're just okay with it now. Yeah, it

Berly

sounds like they're murderers.

LA

As they're driving, it's dark and the car starts like making noises and it just comes to a stop right where Ruby is standing. And she is there to warn Sam that he needs to get out of town fast that there is a particular demon that is in town and no Sam is there. And it's way more than they can handle and she's like really wanting

him to leave. Course Dean gets a little too big for his britches and starts going out or he pulls out the cold and has it at her they start arguing I think he called her like a black eyed skank.

Berly

He called her a skank. He called her a bitch. She called witches horse. It was just like within the span of a minute. I think there were like five derogatory toward women fleurs used Yeah, that's just like Jesus. Where's this coming from?

LA

There's a lot of tension between those. Yeah, a lot. And so much so it ends up he does shoot the Colt at her. But Sam, just in time, like pushes it away. And they wasted a bullet. Yeah. And she disappears. Back at the hotel, they're still kind of going over there are still arguing. And this time Dean is just like, he cannot believe that he is like, feeding Sam's feeding into the stuff that Ruby is telling him. Because he doesn't trust her. She's a demon. Like how can you even be

associating with her? And he sits down and all of a sudden he or you could tell he's like, as he was talking to Sam, he started to just kind of, like you look like like when you start like you're like, Oh God, I don't feel like when you're getting sick. That's what he looked like. And then out of nowhere, he's hunched over and just saying, like, set like this holding a stomach thing. And he feels like he's getting stabbed by like 1000 knives. So we know

something's happening. Sam desperately is like, God, I don't know why I shouldn't have but he's desperately going around looking for the hex bag is so much so that he rips open the mattress. This motel and I think you made the point like

Berly

why would how would they have gotten it in the mattress is what I said when he was slicing it open and you're like you haven't even checked the car yet. You didn't go through Dean's pockets and you're getting a knife and cutting open the mattress. traumatic. Yeah. Something else important that happened during their conversation before Dean started like really killing over is Sam said that Dean's leaving. And if he's going to fight this demon war that's going on by himself.

He has to be more like Dean. Right? So that's why he's trying not to be so empathetic, trying to think more about what really needs to be done in his eyes. How he sees Dean. Right. And I think that kind of made Dean's sad a little bit like he didn't say anything, but just the face he made. Yeah, I think that made him almost sad.

LA

Well, Sam decides to just leave Dean

Berly

and just takes off. It's gonna be much quicker than finding the hex bag to just go all the way back out to that house. Yeah, and kill the Blair patch

LA

to the source. He walks in and the Kevin's there. And they're doing some sort of spell but he pulls out the Colt. And it's threatening them just telling them to call off whatever they're doing to Dean and they are telling him they don't know what the hell he's talking about. They were working. What were they working on

Berly

lowering a mortgage rate.

LA

And he's not buying it. He's he's ready to kill one of them if not all of them. Then it flashes back. Ruby busts into the motel has some little jug thing that she was carrying. slams Dean down on the bed. Yeah, hold him by the neck and start pouring this stuff into his mouth

Berly

that sits on his face. Wait, no, no, not yet.

LA

And it looks like like oil or something like I don't know, it was black, just black, some black liquid shoes is pouring into his mouth. He sits up and he's better now just like saves the day. And so ultimately, he's back at the Coven, where the covens look, look back at the book club. Sam still threatening all of them. And then I just can't remember how it happens. But well, he

Berly

pointed out to the to the two girls, you know, you have had this happen, and this happened and this happen. And you have had this happened. And this happened. And this happened like these amazing things that could be almost newsworthy. And then he was like, but you Tammy, you have a had shit happen. So he's figured out that Tammy is the one the demon is possessing.

LA

Right? Which if I was the other two ladies, I probably would have been like, Hey, why are we you don't want us to conjure up anything for you. Like I would have thought that's weird.

Berly

Yeah. Like, how did they not figure that out? themselves? Right? But people are selfish, you know? Oh, yeah. A lot of people are selfish. They don't necessarily think about other people. And they said the way they talked about it, they've only been doing this for like, a month or so. Oh, yeah. Maybe it was three months. Like it wasn't that long that they'd been doing this. So maybe they just because they were so excited about the good things that were happening.

They didn't have a chance to get to think about the shady part of it. Yeah. We'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Just say they were just a little stupid. You know, I guess there's a little dumb.

LA

Well, Tammy loses her cover and says to tell Sam. Nice Dick work Magnum. Yeah, like How'd you figure that one out? He shoots the Colt at her. And she just lifts up her hand and slows the bullet and it stops. Yeah, so that was like holy, like a holy shit moment here. Like things have slipped, so post to kill them. As like the two ladies are kind of flipping out. She turns to miss Renee Van

Allen. And just like, flips her hand, and snaps her neck like literally snapped all the way around where it's looking at the other lady, right?

Berly

It's like what happened to Richie and Sin City. We just spun her head around. Yeah,

LA

she's slam Sam up against a wall yet again. Sam is up against a wall.

Berly

helpless, can't move. His hands can't move anything.

LA

And then D Dean comes in guns blazing and get slow thrown up against the wall just immediately. Like he literally can't he got the gun up. And then he's up against a wall.

Berly

It was really dramatic. Like his head was whipped around. He was like, Well,

LA

yeah. Then comes Ruby. She walks in and starts talking to the demon and kind of just saying, like, you know, I want to be back with you. Apparently, like we've learned a little backstory that apparently she was a witch. She sold her soul to this demon. And then she was sent to hell. But she came back when they opened up the gates or whatever.

Berly

Yeah, the hell gate. She was one of the demons that got out,

LA

right. So now she's trying to say that she led the Winchesters to her because she knew that Tammy wanted them. And that's like her offering to like, be back with her be back on her team or whatever it is. Tammy doesn't really seem to be buying it. And so she starts to exercise Ruby.

Berly

Well, they had that fight first. And I was right. I forgot about that. Yeah. And I actually thought they were about to kiss

LA

Ruby is on the ground and not getting up and she's like, get up. Yeah. So she like pulls her up and tells her she's gonna she's not coming back on the team. She's sending her back to hell and starts to exercise Ruby so two

Berly

new a demon could exercise another Diem right we were both like

LA

Yeah, but she so the black smokes like it starts to come out of rubies mouth and it looks like she's like almost like, like trying to breathe it back.

Berly

Garden chick finally grew some balls.

LA

Yeah, before during this whole exchange with all of them. She's literally curled her like hands up on her chest. And just as standing next to the fireplace. Like

Berly

she was a good crier, though. She went she had good tears coming down. Yeah.

LA

So she takes off and sneaks out of the room and starts doing a spell on Tammy where Tammy momentarily stops exercising Ruby. So Ruby gets to take the demon back in. Tami's coughing, She's coughing up blood and then we see that there are needles in her hand. And that's what garden girl was doing her incantation or whatever it was a bunch of needles and stuff on the table. The witch realizes what's happening and she just puts her hand up and like squeezes and we see garden girl just like die.

Berly

I guess she she falls forward on The table too,

LA

right? So, Dean out of nowhere pull, like comes up behind the Tammy grabs or with one hand and then just starts stabbing her in the side. And as he's doing he's repeatedly stabbing her. I was like, oh, that's like prison style. He's shaking her. And her lights

Berly

flashing. Yeah,

LA

she's flashing Lola. And so she does die. And she because I guess it's that was rubies.

Berly

Rubies demon knife. Yeah, that's why her and the Tammy got in a fight in the first place is because when they got really close, and we thought they were gonna kiss Ruby tried to stab her. But then Tammy was like, ah, bitch.

LA

Yeah. Any Hill, Ruby tells the boys that they need to take off, she'll clean up the mess. So they go back to the motel. It's nighttime Dean, it looks like he's walking back from getting ice or something at the motel. And all the lights of the motel are flashing. And then there's Ruby again.

Berly

I thought it was cool the way that had the lights at the motel like flashing on and off. Like we haven't seen that, like an exterior shot of the lights, that many lights flashing on and off before.

LA

She tells him that they need to kind of cool it with insulting each other and try and be like on the same team. She needs his help. And he of course, he's like, What the hell do you need my help for? And why would I help you? She needs him to help Sam, get prepared because it's going to come a time when Dean is gone. And Sam is going to be fighting this war by himself and she needs him to

be ready. He asks about the interaction with Tammy and how she had said that Ruby was a person at one point and she said yeah, she was like a basically all the demons I've ever met were people at one time. They just don't remember because when they go to hell, it takes your humanity from you. And she said she didn't know why she was different that she remembers being a person but all the others don't. And she he was like looking at her and she was like, yes, it's gonna happen to

you too. When when he goes,

Berly

Yeah, he straight up asked her You can't stop me from going like, Oh, that's right. Yeah, you can't get me out of the deal. Right? And she was like, No, I told Sam that so he would trust me but now like, I can't stop it. Like you're fucked. You're going to hell

LA

yeah. Which this whole conversation is super out order the way I'm telling it, but whatever. You're hitting all the points. So yeah, she's like you said she confessed to lying to Sam so I'm guessing they're both gonna continue to keep lying to him. Probably.

Berly

I didn't think about that. Yeah.

LA

I doubt they're gonna go and be like, Hey,

Berly

we have bad news.

LA

Ruby lied you and I'm still gonna die. But yeah, that's pretty much how it ends and it like I think it's deemed coming to the realization that oh, he does need to get Sam prepared. Like as much as he doesn't want to see Sam become that way. I guess he's like, I guess even I do need to get him prepared. Yeah, so just so sad. It was sad.

Berly

This was written by Ben Edlund. Our good ol Simon says Simon said the other episode he did this season was Bad Day at Black Rock, which was way more kooky than this one this wasn't this one wasn't so kooky. Yeah, and it was directed by Robert singer who also did Bad Day at Black Rock. All right, Gore. There.

LA

You can talk about I don't want to

Berly

there was a ton of gore. I mean, before we even got the supernatural there was Gore with Janet and the teeth and the mistress which cutting our palm and Jen is spitting out the teeth and then the maggots aren't Gore necessarily but I'm gonna go ahead and bring them up again because it's just gross

Yeah. This oh the Amanda after she failed to kill Paul and her wrists getting I was slashed open I was bad yeah, that was really intense the dead rabbit hanging in the witches room again not technically Gore but I'm going to include it lots lots of gore within this episode lotsa, which we should have seen it coming because they mentioned something about which is always doing what with bodily fluids. I can't remember what exactly Dean

said. I don't remember. So we should have seen it coming but there was gonna be a lot of blood spit and urine in which there wasn't a bit near and but anyway, I think he said something

LA

like they're they're always throwing their bodily fluids around or something which

Berly

grow Yeah. And then I remembered when we did the streak, Lord, it was all spit and blood. Like I guess that kind of tracks right. So lots of gore. Was there anything you adored about this episode?

LA

I mean, they're the I feel like the guys didn't have that many cute moments. I have to say I mean it's sad to say I but I thought the scene with Tammy where she stopped the bullet and everything. I was like, oh de I'm like, that was like a badass moment. Yeah, so I liked that. I wouldn't say like adored it or anything, but I was like, Oh wow,

Berly

minds. Mine same thing. I wouldn't say I adored anything about this episode but something that I appreciated. Alright, that way is that we got more layers to Ruby. Yes. Well, we know you need I needed that because I have not enjoyed her character at all so far this season. But this episode, she did not annoy me. She was in desperate need of having layers beyond just popping in saying something smart assay and then disappearing. Yeah, you know, it

was getting old. So it was it was due she needed to have her moment where we got to know a little bit more about her and see her do something other than that. So I'm happy we got that in this episode. I agree. I'm still not a fan. We know. But I am happy we got that this episode. She's not going to annoy me as much anymore. You know,

LA

I mean, if only she was British, it'd be a different story.

Berly

So for the lore, with the name of the episode, I decided to run with it. Rather than just doing general lore on witches. I decided to run with Malleus Maleficarum which means Hammer of witches.

LA

Can they hear that too? Yes. Oh. Good to know.

Berly

So I researched that the title of the episode and it's again it means Hammer of witches and it's a famous treaties on witches written in 1486 by Heinrich Kramer, an Inquisitor of the Catholic Church.

LA

I was about to say that name sounds really familiar to me for some reason.

Berly

Heinrich Kramer, are you sure we have talked

LA

about him? Someone else? Maybe?

Berly

Oh no. We talked about a lot of shit girl. Anyway, sorry. Carry on Jacob Springer is also often attributed as an author. The main purposes of the text were to attempt to systemically refute arguments claiming that witchcraft does not exist, discredit those who expressed skepticism about its reality claim that witches were more often women than men and educate magistrates on the procedures that could find them out and convict them

LA

sounds so familiar men to control something that's the majority of women participate again,

Berly

okay, my dumbass was totally like, oh my god like this, this past life coming back to you. As we're talking.

LA

It's coming back to me so

Berly

familiar. Okay, so the

LA

malleus Maleficarum

Berly

was first published by Peter Dratch in spiritual spirit superior Germany in 1487. Although a never, I don't know why I added an A there, I'm sorry. Although never officially published by the Catholic Church, the book is considered to have, quote, unquote, opened the floodgates of the inquisitorial hysteria, by using church dogma on heresy to heart and fork lore about witchcraft into a quote, fiercely stringent

code. It influenced centuries of persecution and the execution of hundreds of 1000s of accused witches, most of them women.

LA

Well, I mean, if they're trying to put rent like, you know, laws and stopping things and regulating it, it's probably gonna have to do something with women. Oh, for sure that men are trying to control.

Berly

Alright, so according to Britannica, the work is divided into three parts. In Part One, the reality and the depravity of witches is emphasized, and any disbelief and demonology is condemned as heresy. Because of the nature of the enemy, any witness no matter what his credentials may testify against an accused. Part two is a Copan Diem have fabulous stories about the activities of witches, for example, diabolic compacts sexual relations with devils. Oh, thank you buy and suck you buy. Oh,

LA

shut out.

Berly

Trans vection which is night writing. Done it done it. Done it. Done it. Done it. Done it. Done it. Done it. Done it.

LA

Did you have no idea what you're doing? Night writer? Oh, I never watched it.

Berly

Oh, we're depraved child. And metamorphosis. I guess that's like changing into birds and shit. Yeah. Okay. And then part three is a discussion of the legal procedures to be followed in witch trials. Torture is sanctioned as a means of securing confessions. Lay and secular authorities are called upon to assist the Inquisitors in the task of exterminating those whom Satan has enlisted in

his cause. The Malleus went through 28 editions between 1486 and 1600, and was accepted by Roman Catholics and Protestants alike as an authoritative source of information concerning Satanism and as a guide to Christian defense. Last but not least, according to Wikipedia, after the publication of malleus, it seems as though about three quarters of those individuals prosecuted as witches were women. Witches were

usually female. The reasons for this is the suggestion that witches are, quote, prone to believing, and because the demon basically seeks to corrupt the faith, he assails them in particular, they also have a quote, temperament towards flux, and quote, loose tongues. They, quote, are defective in all the powers of both soul and body, and are stated to be more lustful than men.

LA

In combat love, that was terrible. I don't even know what that was. Yay, lady. Yeah.

Berly

The major reason is that at the foundation of sorcery is a denial of faith. And, quote, woman, therefore is evil as a result of nature, because she doubts more quickly in the faith. Men could be witches, but were considered rarer, and the reasons were also different. The most common form of male which mentioned in the book is The

sorcerer Archer. The book is rather unclear, but the impetus behind male witches seems to come more from desire for power than from disbelief or lust, as it claims in the case for female witches. the malleus Maleficarum accuses witches of infanticide, cannibalism, and casting evil spills to harm their enemies, as well as having the power to steal a man's penis. Wow, okay. And it goes on to give accounts of witches committing these crimes.

LA

Do you think Lorraine Ababa Bobbitt was a witch.

Berly

She didn't. She filled didn't she?

LA

I'm kidding. I'm there. All right, poor poor witches.

Berly

That's the malleus Maleficarum definitely not

LA

what I thought it was gonna be. What do you think it was gonna be something like that. Which is like a book for witches or something like that like that they use not used against

Berly

them. Gotcha. Yeah, no, no, apparently.

LA

I guess I'm not very up on my Latin. You know, your past life

Berly

memory didn't come back to you. The way we thought it would I need another one. So close it out.

LA

Well, to close this out. We've got a quote from Tammy the demon when she when Sam basically does his little monologue when Sam says

Berly

do you want a different quote? No. Okay,

LA

I gotta get I just can't think of the right words right now. We're escaping me. When they're at the house and Sam has the Colt up to the ladies. And he blows up Tammy spot that she's the demon. She tells them nice dick work Magnum.

Berly

I want to use that sentence and I'm gonna go for it. I don't know. Nice Dick work Magnum. Alright. Cheers. Cheers. Thank you for listening to denim wrapped nightmares.
