Berly

Welcome to denim wrapped nightmares tipsy exchange Podcast where we explore the supernatural series episode by episode.

LA

over drinks, we'll discuss the lore of gore and what we adore about the Winchesters and their adventures.

Berly

I'm burly, and I'm a new fan of the series.

LA

I'm LA, and I'm here along for the ride. Now let's get tipsy.

Berly

Hello, la

LA

Hello Burley. Alright, well, our last episode was what?

Berly

We were drinking. Oh, what is it similar? Cimarron, Cimarron, some tequila. I don't know the guy at the liquor store recommended it and Sprite Zero. It's not bad, but I'm not a fan.

LA

I'm not into it.

Berly

Not into it. Yeah,

LA

I just it's the tequila.

Berly

We're so used to vodka

LA

like I don't even really like margaritas that much.

Berly

I'm not a huge mark all the time. I

LA

would ever really want a tequila as if I was doing like a shot like children dressed you

Berly

know just do that next time. We should just do like on the rocks tequila. Like maybe I need some lime lime juice or lemon squeezy lime or lemon squeeze.

LA

Yeah, I could sip on that probably.

Berly

Yeah, let's do that. This is better than the Uriel Oh, for sure. The Uriel was not good and it

LA

was awful. Alright, so last last episode was on the head of a pin. Someone had found her Lucifer sword and was using it to kill angels. Castile and Muriel captured Aleister

Berly

did they ever say it was Lucifer sword.

LA

They didn't when I read that when I was reading that just now I was like, that's the thing that came out of your reels.

Berly

We pulled that from Super wiki, but that's an angel blade that becomes like a common thing later on in the show. I don't know. So I don't know. I don't ever remember them calling it loose. It's an angel blade. Okay, just FYI. Okay, for you. Thank you.

LA

All right, so they captured Aleister and they asked Dean to come and use the torturing skills he learned from Aleister and hell to extract information from him so that they can stop the murders. And Sam is concerned Dean can't handle the job but Dean agrees to do it. However, when Aleister reveals some shocking information Dean's world is shattered. Stupid. Yeah, it's too big for him.

Berly

Today's episode is titled, it's a terrible life. It's the 17th episode of season four. And it originally aired on March 26 2009. The episode opens up in a nice apartment, we see Dean waking up and he gets dressed in a suit and is drinking coffee. And immediately Ellie and I are going What the fuck is happening

LA

so spenders, plenty of suspenders.

Berly

He went outside to get in his car. And it was a silver Prius. The radio starts playing a rock song and he's just like, you know, and he turns it to NPR. And la immediately started bitching, like, you're gonna take my dean away to

LA

fuck man. Change Sam so much. I don't like him. Now Dean's a whole nother guy. Can't take it.

Berly

So he goes to work at a office called sand over bridge and iron Inc, where apparently Dean Smith is the Director of Sales and Marketing. Yet he's typing out letters on stationery and dealing with invoices and billing. I don't understand what his job was. I don't think Dean understood his job. So he's making sales calls. And he's chatting with coworkers. And he's talking with his boss, Mr.

Adler. And then when he's leaving for the day, he gets in an elevator and Uber, who happens to be in the elevator with him? It's tech support technician. Sam, what is it? What isn't Sam Wesson? And Sam is looking at Dean and he's like, do I know Hugh and Dean's like? No, save it for the health club, buddy. So Dean thought Sam was hitting on him. I had to explain it to LA. So I'm going to assume that somebody in our audience didn't get it and needs that explained to them as well.

The next day, we see Sam Wesson chilling in his cubicle. He's answering the phone and being like, oh, did you turn it off and turn it back on again? When's the last time Sam turned you on again? La.

LA

Well, it's probably been a while since I've been a little upset with him.

Berly

Those white scrubs were nice. They were Yeah, that's probably it. I still can't believe you voted Sam for the coveralls.

LA

I mean, what do you want me to say?

Berly

I want you to admit you were incorrect.

LA

I don't think I was I don't feel that I was we're all

Berly

wrong. Sometimes.

LA

We all have our own opinions.

Berly

So see, I was chatting with his co worker Ian. And Ian's like a cool hips. Dude, he doesn't have on a polo he has on a flannel and a T shirt and cargo pants rebel got like scruff on his face. And he still has pencils because he needs a lot of pencils at home. Apparently he's like, Oh, the supply at home is running low. What are you doing with all these pencils? And

LA

maybe maybe he's the he draws with them at home?

Berly

Oh, we're gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and say he's an artist. Sure. Yeah, I don't know. Okay. All right. Well, apparently Sam has told Ian about weird dreams that he has before because and is really hungry for Sam to tell him about his latest dream. Almost annoying myself was a little weird. Yeah, I was kind of weird. And Sam tells him that he had a dream where he was like hunting ghosts or something. I don't remember exactly what he said. And he was just like,

Goofy. And like, give Sam shit.

LA

He was Sam's friend.

Berly

Was he? Was he not? I mean, he's sure seemed to want to pick on Sam for his dreams and make fun of him and be like, how much d&d Did you play dude, and all of that kind of stuff. He seemed a little bit like bully. I'm just gonna say maybe they were close friends. And he was just teasing him a little bit. Yeah, that's

LA

what I was thinking.

Berly

But I just I thought he was a little much. Okay. Oh, well, and gets his. I'll just say that was really loud. At the end of this work day, Sam gets in the elevator again. And oh, who's there? It's Dean. So he's like, Hey, like, Do we know each other? Turns out, Sam has been seeing Dean and his dreams. So he's trying to figure out the connection here. Why does he know this man? So Dean tells him like, No, we don't know each other. Seems like, I'm gonna ask

you a personal question. And he's like, listen, I told you. Seems like no, I don't swing that way. It's cool. Do you believe in ghosts, bro? Dean's like, Listen, man, you overshare he jumps off the elevator to get away from Sam as quickly as he can. So back in the Tech Support Office. Sam is googling supernatural creatures and doodling on a little drawing pad. And Sam's artistic skills have upskilled like he's on a new level.

LA

Definitely.

Berly

Because the last time we saw anything that Sam draw, whoa, Drew. Yeah, there we go. It was in bedtime stories. And it was a sad little sick stick figure. These drawings are intricate. And really good. So Sam's been taking some drawing lessons or he got one of those how to draw books or something.

LA

Yeah. Wasn't he drawing like a vampire and looking those up because he just had a dream where they killed a vampire. Or I feel like it's not dreams. Those are his memories.

Berly

But he thinks surgery. Yes, I know. Yeah. It showed him like seeing Dean like do the whole sawmill thing. I don't remember which episode it was with gore. I know it would Gordon was in it because Gordon was all like into it. Whenever Dean did the sawmill thing and Sam was all like, oh, so yeah, he was drawing vampires and stuff. I'm just saying they were good drawings. I know. And like comes over to ask Sam like, oh, did you get an email for HR to and Sam was like, No, and he was like, who will?

LA

Lit?

Berly

This is just me then Sam's like, oh, it's probably because you've been stealing all those pencils. Yeah. And as well, I hope they punish me. And he like takes off. And then their other coworker Paul is on the other side of the cubicle being like, oh, no, my work is gone. And he's really upset and Paul has been stressing this entire episode says seem really high strung. And apparently he's done all this work that has just disappeared in his computer and Sam's like, well, didn't you

back it up? And Paul's like, No, I didn't fucking back it up, Sam. I wish I had, but I haven't. Oh, man. Well, and Paul had

LA

been didn't he go see HR? before? Yeah, they him and Ian were talking about Paul had gone to see HR. Yeah, and now now he's acting all the jiggity Yeah, cuz I

Berly

think they were saying Paul, like, caught jerking off or something. I

LA

don't remember what they said. Didn't they say something about something weird? Oh, yeah. Something porn on his computers. Yeah.

Berly

So he had to go to HR and now he's been acting all weird. Then we got to like late at night. Everybody's gone. All the lights are off. But Paul is still at his workstation. And he's only good. Well, the work it's gone. And then we see like some weird glowing light behind him. And he kind of goes not catatonic but just like almost zombie like zombie like autopilot. Yeah, there you go kind of thing. He just stands up. He walks to the break room.

He picks up a fork. It's plastic fork, and he like breaks off each prong one by one. And he goes and he sticks it in the microwave with the door open and he puts his head in and he sets the microwave for 10 minutes and turns it on. And like fries his own head in the microwave.

LA

What do we do? Go

Berly

all the ways to take yourself out. Yeah, that was quite creative. I gotta give him that, that would have never crossed my mind. So the next morning, Sam and Dean are both there. As the body is getting wheeled out, like in a body bag. They're like looking at each other, like, awkwardly trying not to make eye contact. And I've noticed at this time, it was like, two things look like they're in tanning lotion, like kind of kind of orange to you what's going on with the

coloring hair, Dean? Definitely. Yeah, I hadn't noticed it so much at this point. But in hindsight, like that awful, blue striped shirt that we didn't like, it was really bright. It was very obvious then yeah, it was starting to kind of I was starting to notice it at this point that the colors were brighter than normal, like they looked orange or things just look more bright. Sam's eyes were looking really green. And some shots like the colors were starting to come out to me at

this point. I was starting to notice them. Yeah. So separately, they each kind of start to investigate what the fuck went on with Paul. They're both looking at his employment file and figure out he was supposed to retire in two weeks. Why would someone take themselves out when they were about to retire in two weeks? Now? I know. Sam says something about it to Ian. But all of a sudden, Ian is all clean shaven and in his work shirt. And like, hey, gotta get this work done.

LA

I don't have time, Sam.

Berly

Yeah, I'm gonna work. It's important. En gets a note from Dean that he needs to go see Dean in his office. And this is when Dean is like, Oh, we upgraded to VISTA which I was like, I remember VISTA. And you filled out this form wrong. I just need you to correct it. It's cool. No problem. Just do this one, right, because I gotta get to billing and invoices. I was like, What the fuck is he talking about? But it doesn't matter. Because what matters is

that en loses his shit. Yeah. He is not happy that he has made a mistake and has affected the company profits. How dare he? So he freaks the cookout and runs down the hall into the bathroom. Dean decides to follow him. And it's at that point that LA notice the suspenders? Well, I had

LA

noticed them before. I just like I just couldn't. I just

Berly

suspenders. I don't know. I feel like they could be fun. grabbing them. Day one still. I mean. Now Dean runs into the bathroom. And Ian is just leaned over to the spanked. Yeah, he's really upset just staring at himself in the mirror. And then like they both are blowing cold air. And we were like up ghosts. There's a ghost in the house. And then all the sinks turned on. And then all the soap started scooping out and like made me think of like the blob. Oh, yeah. Or the

Ghostbusters or something. Just the pink news. Ghostbusters two specifically, oh, I know. Dan's just trying to tell you like, bro, like, chill out. It's fine. Like, I just need to fill out another form. It's not a big deal. And and it's just like, it is a big deal. And he pulls a sharpened pencil out of his pocket and stabs it into his neck and just start squirting blood. And Dean is not okay. He like runs over to and grabs and

was like what the fuck, bro. And then he looks in the mirror and he sees this old man figure just standing in the bathroom and it like flashes away. So we saw the ghost. As Ian's body is being removed. Sam is watching that. And like he's looking at Dean as he's talking to security. And they're just like, you're still like, kind of looking at each other that kind of checking each other out still. Later on Dean calls Sam. He's like, we need to talk.

LA

Oh, no, he says, I need to see you in my office right now. And I was like, Oh, he called me okay.

Berly

Yes, sir. Right there. I'll be there right away. Mr. Smith. Dean is beating around the bush walking on eggshells, whatever you want to call it and he's essentially trying to get to the point of like, so why do you why were you asking me about ghosts earlier bro. Like what's the whole thing and Sam figures it out like you fucking solid Ghost didn't you? Do you just like no, I don't know what I saw. Okay, I don't know what I saw. instinctually like they

know something's not right. Then they talk more about both Paul and Ian and how it's really fucking weird. These things have happened that they were both summoned to HR room 1444 and Dean is like, wait a minute, HR is on for seven. It seems like exactly something strange is afoot at the Circle K should we look into this Dean's like I don't know. I don't think we should do Like, we should just go home, it's the end of the day. Seems like I'm dying to look into this. He's like me

too. So they decide, let's go. And so they go up to the 14th floor. And some other tech guy has just so happened to be called up to room 1444 Right before they get there. So he's in the room getting ghost attacked. Sam and Dean like wiggle the doorknob, and nothing happens. And so Sam like karate kicks the door open and does a dramatic. I'm standing with a chest. The door up it's Dean's like, Oh my God. James impressed. That was amazing.

LA

Whoa, whoa,

Berly

whoa. So hi. Sam is just like I know. So they go in, and the sky like one of the storage racks has fallen over on top of him. So they're lifting it up and trying to help him and the ghost shows up and starts attacking them. Dean instinctually grabs an iron wrench and swings it through the ghost and he disappears. Now they asked wrench. Now Sam's turned to go. Whoa, yeah, that was really impressive. I liked

it. Now that they've bonded, and they're really impressed with each other Dean's like, why don't you come home with me? Let's go to my apartment and talk some more about this. So they get there and Dina's. Like it's time for us to do what I do best research. And then they find the ghost phasers website and LA was tickled pink to see the ghost phasers again. I'm

LA

excited. I need more of them. The good

Berly

sponsors are finding them telling them like, Okay, first you got to find out what you're hunting. And then you got to figure out how to kill it and they're telling them about salt. And they're bitching about the Winchesters during their little videos as well, calling them douche nozzles and all these other kinds of things. So they figure out that the ghost is the late PT standover who is the company's founder. And he is trying to create model employees

out of rebellious workers. Room 1444 was his office way back in the day and sand over was cremated but the ghosts phasers, tell them there's some other DNA is somewhere. You got to find that DNA it's like hair, skin to something you got to go find that shit and burn it. They go back to the office they go back to room 1444 was salt and fireplace pokers and they're looking for that DNA. A security guard comes up and he spots Sam But Dean is able to hide so Sam

gets taken away. Dean continues trying to look for DNA in there. And the television straight screens are all going like staticky everywhere. They're going staticky in the elevator with the security guard and Sam. And so the elevator shuts down and the security garlic pulls out his little key thing and twist sit opens the door slice it open and LA and I immediately you're like No, no. We know where this is going. And even though we knew what was going to happen, it still shocked me when

it actually happened. So awful. Oh my god. So Sam is telling the security guard as he's climbing through the doors up onto the floor. He's like, No, I'm just gonna wait. Yeah, it's fine. I'm not I'm not coming through there. I'm just gonna wait. The security guard is like no, like, come on. It's gonna be at least a couple of hours. And we have to get out of here. Climb through here climb through this little hole. And Sam says, no, no, I'm good. I'm good. I'm good

to just wait here, man. So the security guard squeezes back through the hole and is reaching his hand out to Sam is telling him Come on. And then the elevator shifts. And we get our 21st Blood splooge of the supernatural series. As the security guard is squished in the elevator between floors, and blood sprays all over Sam's face and chest.

LA

Poor guy.

Berly

Sam somehow gets out of the elevator.

LA

I was wondering I'm like, Get out of there.

Berly

And Dean calls him telling him to go to the 22nd floor because there is a pair of Santa gloves on display on the 22nd floor and surely that's where the extra DNA is skin flakes. Whatever is in those gloves. Bright whenever they get there. Sand overs. Ghost is like fuck you, Sam and Dean,

LA

don't touch my gloves don't

Berly

get to my shit. And he is throwing them. I mean, he's kicking their ass. Yeah. After they have their little tussle. They fight back and forth. Sam manages to burn the gloves and the ghost disappears. Back in Dean's office. They're talking about their experience and they are psyched. They have a lot of fun. And Sam is just like, I think we should quit our jobs and do this instead. Like there's going to be other ghosts somewhere. This is what we should do. We can really help

people. And Dean's like, how would we live like we're gonna live off a stolen credit cards. Stay in gross motels eat fast food like essentially describing Sam and Dean's life. He's like there's no life. There's no life. How Are we supposed to do that? Or don't? We wouldn't even have health insurance like it's just no. And Sam gets really sad. And he's just like, Listen, I've been dreaming about you.

LA

Didn't say like

Berly

I dream of you every night. This is what we're meant to. We're meant to be together. Run away with me be with me. Let's do this. And Dana is just like, No, I can't can't run away with you, Sam. Sam is just like, fine. And he leaves after Dean tells him, you need to leave rejected go away. I do not dream of you, Sam. So the next day, we see Sam back at his cubicle. And he's all melancholy because he just got rejected by the man of his dreams, literally. And he

just loses his shit. After his phone rings one too many times. He pulls out a fire poker from under his desk. Why?

LA

Why is it there?

Berly

He kept it. To remember Diem and because of his little memento from the line. And he smashes his phone. And he goes, I quit. Yeah. Meanwhile, Dean is working away in his office when his boss, Mr. Adler comes in. And we've seen him like one other time in the episode, I think. Yeah, at the beginning. Yeah. And at first I didn't, he seemed really familiar to me. And then by the end of the episode, we were both like, oh, he was in Kings a con. He's gonna be somebody. And LA was

like, Oh, he's the monster. He's causing this. She was right. We find out. We don't know it yet. Because he comes in. And just for no reason whatsoever is like, what do you think about this number? Right? It's like number of pieces on a piece of paper and slides it over to Dean. Yeah, he's really want to keep you happy. You got here. What do you think about this for a bonus? When has that ever happened? Never. Dean sees it. And he's just like, You know what? This is great. But I'm

giving my notice I'm quitting. A man has been dreaming about me. And I'm gonna run away with him. Because it just it. This is not who I'm meant to be. I am meant to be the man of that man's dreams. And I'm gonna do it.

LA

I gotta go live our lives together on the road.

Berly

Yeah. And then Mr. Other is like, that is fantastic. I am so happy for you. And then he taps Dean on the forehead and the color changes. And that's when I was like, Oh, we were right. We knew something was off at the color, but we couldn't quite put our finger on it. And we weren't sure if we were making it up. But then when the color changes, we're like, ah, we were right. And because of the forehead tap, and the dramatics of all of this, we also figured out he's an angel

Angel right away. dramatic shift starter. Not just coming out and saying what the deal is, but having to put you through a huge ordeal to make you figure it out yourself like Angel we knew right away. And it turns out, yes, he is an angel. His name is Zachariah. And he is cast yells superior. And he did all of this. So that Dean would realize this is who he is. It's in his blood. He's not a hunter because his daddy made him a hunter or whatever. That's just who he is.

And Zachariah is here, because of all the shit that happened with Uriel. He's like, I didn't want to come here. I didn't want to get in this smelly thing. Just like Okay, great. So it's another angel who fucking hates us? Like nine. Don't like us. And I love them so much. I wish they liked us. No. Anyway, so Dean is just like, Okay, well, this is fucked up. But I'm gonna try and do whatever the fuck it

is. Y'all want me to do I still don't know what you want me to stop if it's the apocalypse or if it's Lucifer or whatever, but fine. Yes, this is who I'm meant to be. Oh, I forgot to say that. Whenever Sam and Dean were having a conversation that Dean said his dad was Bobby. Oh, yes, Mom was Ellen and his sister was Joe. And then Sam said his fiance was Madison. We got really excited about that. Yeah, we that's what we were like to try to figure out what's

happening. So a bunch of fun little easter eggs throughout this episode. It was fun. It was cute. It was written by Sarah gamble and it was directed by James L Conway. Adore was there anything you adored about this episode?

LA

Those suspenders

Berly

I thought you didn't like the suspenders it didn't but I did you've come around I liked what they did with the change in color. Yes, sir. surge, the sweetness that was really subtle. Like it was just enough change that I could tell something was off. But I didn't know exactly why until it changed back to normal. And the Smith and Wesson. Yeah, that was cute. That was cute and clever with their last names. And all

the little easter eggs. Yeah. Bobby ln Joe Madison goes phasers, all these little easter eggs kind of letting us know that they aren't in an alternate reality necessarily something else is going on here because Zachariah told them like no this is like the real world. This is a real haunting. This is a real thing. I just took out your memories and dropped you in the middle of it. I liked I liked it. I thought it was a really cute episode. I like to to Gore, I guess the Korean elevator the

elevator and the pencil. Yeah. It's pretty gory. The elevator was the worst. Yeah. Because you knew it was coming. It was like the pencil you didn't know it was coming. So it was a shock factor with the pencil. But the elevator to me the build up of it. Yeah, that was that was pretty bad. Yeah. Oh, yeah, we got 2021 We're up to 21 Blood switches.

LA

Okay.

Berly

Well, what about lower LA?

LA

Well, I mean, we could have always talked about another vengeful ghosts or whatnot. But instead, the whole episode is kind of similar to It's A Wonderful Life. Movie. This is more along the lines of like what that movie was based off of. The movie has pretty much become synonymous with the Christmas holiday and everybody goes you know to watch. George Bailey come to terms with his beautiful normal small town life and the fictional town of

Bedford Falls New York. And while the set of the idyllic Bedford Falls is meant to appear as quintessential every town America, it bears striking similarities to another real small town with its own George Bailey.

Berly

So Bedford Falls isn't real, I guess. Correct? Okay,

LA

so 1945 on a snowy Christmas Eve, it's wonderful life follows Jimmy Stewart's George Bailey Bedford Falls resident good guy who has given up all his dreams and an effort to help others. Ready to end his life George prepares to take his own life by jumping off a bridge when his guardian angel clearance appears and jumps into the cat canal first. George Bailey saves him and the pair set off in an epic journey together as Clarence shows George what everyone's life would be like if George had

never been born. The film is supposedly loosely based on a Charles dick on Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol clues point to other inspirations as well. The film's bed per falls, though set may have been based on Seneca Falls, New York, a small town, so it's like a wonderful life they have established a museum and annual festival and the film's name, and likewise, the story of George Bailey may stem from the story of one of Seneca Falls residents Antonio vara. Cali may be saying that wrong, I

don't know. Director fate Frank Capra visited Seneca Falls New York while writing the script for its wonderful life, and he seems to have drawn inspiration from the small town. Throughout Seneca Falls, many structural similarities can be seen compared to It's A Wonderful Life. At the time Seneca Falls lower Main Street had a grassy median down the center of town. Like the one George Bailey runs down and it's a wonderful life.

The Seneca Falls railroad station in 1945 was nearly identical to the one in the film and Victorian homes peppered the town. Additionally, it's wonderful life references nearby towns of Rochester and Elmyra.

With a train that ran straight to Buffalo from Seneca Falls, the year the film was made, but most significant significantly, Seneca Falls is home to the Bridge Street Bridge, a steel truss truss bridge, identical to the one George has seen it on in the film, which bears an important plaque the plaque memorializes Antonio vara Collie who in 1917 died saving a woman who had jumped into the canal and in an attempted suicide.

Following his heroic act, the town came together and raise money to fund vara Callie's lifelong dream of breathing of bringing his family to the US from Italy. Much like how the townspeople of Bedford Falls, all of the people whose lives would have been changed if George Bailey had not been born, came together pulling their money to save George Bailey and it's a wonderful life.

Berly

Interesting.

LA

It's really relevant.

Berly

What else would we google right? Yeah. I mean, I guess we could Google if there's really sand over. There is an Alfred standover was a British Australian hardware merchant and philanthropist. And a Raymond standover was a soldier in Australian and British armies. And William standover. The South Australian politician and hotel the air. Hotel EA. Is that Is that what it is? There's a
