It's like, you know, kind of that analysis paralysis thing. Yeah. Especially when it's something, you know, that's mission critical for your business. Right. Yeah. Yeah. And it's a bigger decision than just buying like.
you know, a pair of shoes for yourself. You've got to get it right. And, you know, you've done your research, you're here listening to the deep dive, so you know you're already ahead of the game. Yeah, you're on the right track. But we don't want to get bogged down in the weeds, you know.
Keep it practical. We want to help you find the right LMS for you. Exactly the right one. Not the like quote unquote best one. Right. Because the quote unquote best one might not be the best fit for you. Exactly. We want to make sure that you're.
corporate training strategy, your learning and development, everything's working smoothly. Right. And that your learners are engaged and that they're retaining the information. Yeah. That's the whole point. That's the whole point. Otherwise, what are we doing? Yeah, exactly. So. We're going to talk about some must-have features, things you should be looking for. Yeah, and how to kind of approach this whole process of finding an LMS. So let's jump right in. Okay, let's do it.
¶ Key Features and Learner Experience
you know when you're when you're thinking about the features that you absolutely need what are some of the things that come to mind well i think it's it's less about like a one size fits all list of features and more about aligning them with your specific requirements, right? Like what's your company's training strategy? What are you hoping to achieve with this LMS? How do your internal processes work?
What's your current training setup look like? Are there any big changes planned? Right. Your LMS needs to fit into all of that. It's got to work with what you already have. Yeah, seamlessly. So, for example, you know, maybe you need to... customize the learning experiences for different teams or departments. Right. Yeah. Do you need personalized learning paths? Is that aligned with your training philosophy? Do you need access to pre-built content libraries? Mm-hmm.
to supplement your own materials what about tools for creating your own content right like interactive videos or do you need it to connect with your existing webinar platforms right
So many questions. These are the kinds of things you want to be asking vendors. And you also have to think about the learners themselves. Oh, absolutely. Because if they're not... engaged if they're not using the system it doesn't really matter what features it has right it's a very human centric thing we're talking about here it is so will your employees be able to easily find the courses they need to take
Yeah. Will they be able to find specific resources? Like, can they easily see upcoming deadlines? Are they getting clear updates on their progress? Right. What about customized homepages? Is that something that's important to you? That can make a big difference. It can really make it feel like it's their platform.
Yeah. It's more than just branding. Yeah. It's about creating a really relevant and user-friendly environment for your workforce. And this is where I think it's important to really press the vendors. You know, don't just take their word for it that it's user friendly. Yeah. Ask them to show you. Show me why learners are going to love this platform. Absolutely. And really make them give you a demo. Yeah. A comprehensive demo. That shows you exactly how it works. Exactly.
¶ Content, Security, and Automation
Okay, so we've talked about features. We've talked about the learners now. Let's talk about the content. The heart of it all, right? Yeah. How easy is it to create content? How easy is it to get it into the system and get it out to your learners? So... Think about things like multimedia content. Can you create videos, animations?
interactive exercises, even games within the platform. Right. Can you upload your existing materials like PDFs, e-books? Can you build in assessments, quizzes? Yeah. Do you need any special software? to prepare your training content, or can you do it all within the LMS? And what about using content that you've already developed, or bringing in content from third-party providers? Yeah, how easy is it to integrate all of that? And then how do you keep everything up to date? Yeah.
That's a big one. Especially if you know you're dealing with compliance issues. Absolutely. So you want to ask about version control. Version control. Yeah. Like when you update a training module, does the system keep track of those changes? So learners are always seeing the most. up-to-date information right and you can even roll back to previous versions if you need to and can you make sure that learners are automatically enrolled in the latest version of the course
Yeah, especially for compliance purposes. Right. That's crucial. Okay, let's talk about data security. Okay, a big one. Huge. This is employee data we're talking about. Sensitive information. So you want to make sure that it's protected. Absolutely. You want an LMS that prioritizes security but also allows you to track and analyze.
Learner progress effectively. Right. Security shouldn't get in the way of measuring results. So what kind of questions should you ask about security? Well, who has access to what data and at what permission level? How secure? are any collaborative features within the lms right what kind of access controls are there for sensitive information
Like assessment scores. Right. How do they protect against cyber threats? What are their data hosting and backup procedures? You want to make sure that they meet all the industry standards? Absolutely. All the relevant standards. Okay. Now let's talk about something that can really... help your lnd team okay what's that automation automation yeah automating tasks they can save so much time it can be a lifesaver so can the lms automate things like
Enrolling learners in courses. Yeah. Can it send out reminders? Can it manage certifications? Renewals. Renewals. Exactly. Yeah. So people don't let those things lapse. And what about reporting? you know oh yeah can it generate reports automatically can you import user data can you import course content all automatically without having to do it all manually yeah that can be a huge time saver so think about those automation features they can really make a difference
¶ Evaluating LMS Vendors Thoroughly
All right, let's talk about pricing. Okay, the all-important budget. Yeah, you know, and how it's going to change as your organization grows. Right, because you're not static, are you? No, and you don't want to be stuck with an LMS that can't grow with you. Exactly, or shrink with you. Right. You know, if you downsize or something. Or if you merge with another company. Right. So many things to consider. So how do vendors count learners?
Yeah, that's a big question. Is it just the total number of users or is it just the active users? Because that can make a big difference in price. It can't. So you need to know how your costs are going to scale. Right. Are there different tiers of service? Mm hmm. What's included in the base price? What are the extras? What are you going to have to pay extra for? Yeah, and what about onboarding implementation?
Support. Support. Yeah, that included. Are there different levels of support? And what are those levels? What are the limitations? You want to make sure you're getting the support you need. Absolutely. All right, let's talk about reporting and analytics. Okay, because data is king.
Right. You've got to be able to show the value of your training programs. Right. You need to know what's working, what's not working. So what kind of data does the LMS collect? Yeah. And can you customize reports to see the specific metrics you're interested in? Can you schedule reports to be generated automatically? And can you make it easy for executives to understand the data? Right. Can you visualize it in a way that's meaningful? Does it integrate with your business intelligence tools?
And if you're in a regulated industry, can it generate the specific reports you need for compliance? Yeah, those are all important considerations. Now let's talk about customer service and support. Okay, because you're going to need help at some point. You are. It's a complex system. It is, so you need to know what kind of support you can expect. Are there different support tiers? Yeah. What's the response time? Mm-hmm.
What are their hours of operation? How do they handle different time zones, holidays? Right. What if you have a critical issue? What's the escalation process? What kind of emergency support do they offer? Yeah, you need to know what their priorities are. And what about implementation? Yeah, do they provide implementation services? Administrator training? Are there tutorials and help?
resources available. You want to make sure you have the resources you need to get up and running. And here's a big one. Ask them if they use their own LMS to train their own employees. Ooh, that's a good one. If they don't, that's a red flag. It really is. If they don't trust their own platform to train their own people, why should you? Right. OK, let's talk about integrations. OK, because your LMS doesn't exist in a vacuum.
It's got to work with your other systems. Right. So does it offer single sign on SSO? Mm-hmm. So your employees don't have to remember another set of login credentials. All right. Can it integrate with your HRIS, your e-commerce platform? Your data warehouse. Your webinar platforms. Can you automate data synchronization? Yeah. Can you connect it to all the other tools you use? And what about custom integrations? If you have...
Very specific needs. You want to make sure that's possible. All right. Last but not least, let's talk about the future. Okay. The crystal ball. Yeah. Because technology is always changing. It is. And you want an LMS that can keep up. So ask vendors about their strategy for anticipating future trends. Right. Are they incorporating new technologies? Is their platform scalable? Yeah. Can it adapt as your needs change? How often do they release...
Updates. New features. Do they listen to their clients? Yeah. Do they take your feedback into account when they're developing new features? And what about upgrades? Yeah, what's their upgrade schedule? Will there be any downtime? Planned maintenance. How much notice will you get? And what new features are they working on? Yeah, what's on the horizon? You want to make sure they have a vision for the future.
All right, so to wrap it all up, finding the right LMS is about asking the right questions. It's not about being dazzled by flashy features. Right. It's about figuring out what you need. And making sure the LMS can deliver. Exactly. So take your time. Don't rush into it. Involve your team. Get everyone on board. Maybe even do a training audit. Yeah, figure out what your needs really are.
Use a structured approach to evaluating vendors. Yeah, don't just wing it. And be informed. Ask those tough questions. Then you can make the right decision for your organization. Absolutely. You got this. You do. You got this. All right. Thanks for listening, everybody. Thanks for joining us for this deep dive.
