Turning to the Gospel of Luke in chapter 15 we read three consecutive parables. The first about a lost sheep, the second about a lost silver coin and the third about the lostness of a young man … a son.
Jesus in this parable of the lost son contrasts the defiance of the son and the desire of the Father to see his son return. The repentance and confession of the son and the Father’s rejoicing in restoring his son to his former position.
