Transcript

All right, it's in Minnesota. Goodbye, good morning or good afternoon or good Eve or good early. I know I did. I did. I totally just stole that from you. I did just totally steal that from me. I didn't know what to say yesterday. We just started talking on this half the time, and there's no plan, there's not like a thought in my head. I just turned a microphone on and I start blabbing, and apparently I decided to steal your Line's fair. Anyways, it's Jenny, it's

Drake, and vond is here as well. Today my first Minnesota goodbye baby. More often, I've been on the show more times without Dave than with, and I feel like he has a problem with me. I'm scared. No, not at all. We just don't really typically have guests and a lot like anyone fun. You can come hang out next week when he's back, go for it. We would love to have you. We have a lot of email, so let's jump into these first officers, Jenny and Drake,

who don't say my name. This email has been sit in my drops for the last eleven months, so it's about time I finished writing it and send it your way first, as a fellow LGBTQ Plus member, I wanted to see what Drake's perspective has been being gay in the Twin Cities. I moved here from a small town in Minnesota to feel more accepted, and it's been great. Every once in a while, something will happen where I feel like I have to hide who I am, But for the most part,

being in the Cities, I have felt pretty widely accepted. What do you feel, Drake, Yeah, I mean I come from a very small town, like population two thousand in Wisconsin. I'm assuming it's very similar to small towns in Minnesota. But I think moving here was one of the best decisions I think I ever made. It truly is a crazy difference moving to a big city when you are you know, might not be comfortable in the area you grew up in, especially if it's like a small town. Yeah,

it's just nice to surround yourself with people that don't know you personally. They don't you haven't grown up with them, and especially around people. Everybody in the Twin Cities I feel like, for the most part, is very acceptable of who you are, no matter who you are. Absolutely, yeah, yeah, it's very acceptable. I will say, my experience has been really good. The one thing I do I am not a super big fan of is the dating scene around here. It seems like everybody kind of knows each

other, since you know, very ancestuous around here. Yeah. So I've got plenty of gay friends who tell me all about it, and there's a lot of gossip about Drake. Yeah. I haven't heard any rumors about Drake yet not. Yeah, yeah, you should act like you don't know who Drake is. Right, So besides like it being a little bit more of a tit nick dating community, I would say everything else is great. I would just be careful about who you If you are going to get into the

dating scene, totally cool. If you're not, I know, there's like a little bit of a relationship because I'm going to get to that in parts. Okay, yeah perfect, Yeah then absolutely, Citi's been great. Yeah. I highly recommend it. So they said, Second, my fiance and I are planning a non traditional wedding and looking for fun things to include. Since you both have been to lots of bachelrette parties and weddings, do you

have any fun or sentimental suggestions that have been memorable? God, Drake you might have to take this one. I don't what do you what do they say they're having a non traditional wedding, and they're looking for fun things to include in it, So just like some some maybe an activity or something like that. Definitely, I mean, depending on how many people you are wanting

to include in this. Like I think going downtown on like you know, around like the Gay Nineties and the Saloon and all that, just go like hopping around all those places for a night. I think that would be a lot of fun. If you're talking like an actual like wedding wedding, I mean I have an idea go for it, because I just had a wedding the summer that was super cool, and they said anything memorable. The couple did a crossword like a big, like life sized crossword puzzle where you could

fill out on this board answers to questions about the couple. So it was super cool. It was like, well, where was Glob's family originally from? He's from Russia, so so you'd fill that out and you only should fill out like one answer at a time. But I thought that that was a unique way to like have something about them and then interact with the people who are there. Yeah, and you're doing a non traditional wedding, so

you know, you you do whatever you want at it. But that was something that stood out for me. So sorry, we're probably not the greatest help on that. But bachelorette parties, I would say bachelor I think bachelorette parties. I mean, yeah, if you're going around here, there's so many options around the downtown area in Minneapolis. I'm gonna be honest. I did one bacherette party in Saint Paul and the only reason it was okay was

because there was a wild game that night. Otherwise Saint Paul is dead usually unless there's a concert or something going on at the ex Bomber, So I would like avoid Saint Paul unless something's going on. But if you're trying to go out and party, invite me. Accept your invitation. I think we'll have a great time and think it is a good time. HM. One last question, they say, Jenny, do you want a wedding? Any desire for one? Since I know you are up in the airbo getting married.

Any fun honeymoon ideas that people have absolutely loved. I'm not a big beach gal and love some adventure. I don't care about a wedding. I have told Andrew before that if we decide to get married, let's go. Sarah Bob was at the top of a mountain and snowboard down like that is my personality. I know a lot of people love weddings, and I think that I love attending weddings. It's just not my thing to like go have this big, extravagant wedding, or even like a small wedding. It's not

really my thing. I get that. So and then fun honeymoon ideas. I would say, you're not a beach person, so I would consider doing a West Coast road trip literally one of my favorite trips I've ever ever done in my entire life. You can get the beach vibes if you want them,

or you can just like see the ocean you don't. I mean, we went when it wasn't very warm, so we weren't like hanging out on the each but we were doing a new city every day, and we went down the coast all the way down to Big sur from Portland and then down the coast and that was so much fun. Lots of hiking options, things to do. We rented four wheelers, I think they're four wheelers and did like dune buggies more these like sand dune things. So that was so much

fun. But you feel free to DM me on Instagram and I can give you some more. I don't want to take up like this entire podcast because I could give you some more recommendations at Jenny Katie WB. And then lastly they finished it with saying I love rhyming words, so I'll send it off with this licky dicky instead of the traditional dart lick. Okay, so licky Dicky cool. Love that. Thank you for your email. All right. Up next to Ted and Drake were playing learyc Shuffle. When Dave was out,

one of the words was under. Both of them were trying to figure out the song under the Bridge by Red Hot Chili Peppers. I just heard it played on City ninety seven and fun fact, the word under is never mentioned in the song. I wonder how many other songs have titles that are never actually mentioned in the song. AnyWho Bye? That comes from Stephanie.

That's so true. I don't remember you guys trying to contemplate over that one, but I like, there are definitely some songs out there where you hear the title and you're like waiting for that to come up in the chorus, and they never actually say what the title is. So that's an interesting, good point, Stephanie. He's very observational. Yeah, no kidding, This one says, Hey, you guys, don't say my name. I am currently going through a breakup. First off, sorry, those are tough.

We were together for nine years. Cool. This is the second time in two days I've heard about nine years. I haven't lived by myself for no more than six months at a time, and that was eight years ago. I will soon be moving into my apartment all by myself. Now I'm wondering how do I make sure I use this new alone time to find myself again. Should I find new hobbies, do things I want to do? Any advice is needed. I haven't been alone in nine years, thank you?

Okay. So I was in a relationship, like very serious relationship with an until I was about twenty five, and then I was single for about five years and then now we are together again. But in that five years that I was single, I took full advantage of like trying to find myself as a single person, and I wasn't like I was habitually single before Andrew even so like I was pretty used to it, but it was different after you experience a relationship to then try to find yourself again. And so I got

involved in so many things. I mean, like I said yes to everything. Granted I was like twenty five, I was young, and like at this point in my life the things I used to do would be exhausting to me. But I mean, I joined a kickball league, which I know you hear me talk about on the show all the time, but that league, hands down, was one of the best things I've ever done for my

social life. I made so many friends in it, and I have so many different groups of friends now because of that league, and to the point where I like, I've done snowboarding trips with people, I've done goodbye parties on a party bus with a different group from that league, Like I've done

themed parties and it just really got me out there socially. So if you're not a super extroverted person, I would say, just like, lean into your hobbies and figure out what makes you happy and figure out who you are by yourself. Because I know someone else who went through a breakup recently and they were talking to their therapists and they were like, do you even know who you are? Like it feels like you don't know who you are anymore

as this person. So you just really got to find out who you are. And I mean, I'm sorry you're going through that. Nine years together. It's a long time, so like I need to be by yourself. Like I'm learning to be by myself just like physically right because I'm still in

a relationship. But yeah, find out the things that make you who you are, whatever your name is, without not only that person, but just like just as your self period, the things that make you happy, the things that you enjoy, the things that you don't enjoy, you know, the things that you used to maybe do with that partner and then just don't like the social things like obviously you don't like have intimacy or stuff like that, but like maybe you don't enjoy drinking or going to a bar by yourself.

That's all important. Yeah, pretty sorry about that. Nine years is goodness? Yeah, Drake, do you have any I think you guys, I think you guys said, and I don't think you should be pressured to like, don't feel pressured about having to go out and be social right away, Yeah, don't you. You might just need some time to yourself just to, like, you know, deal with emotions. Don't feel like you need to be distracted. Like it's okay to deal with emotions. There's plenty

of hobbies and things that you can go do that don't involve socializing. Snowboarding like that's that's a good example of it, or something like that. Maybe you don't have to go like super not dangerous, but figure something out. You'll figure it out. You'll you will figure it out. You will find

who you are as a person by without your significant other. And I promise, even though you are going through this breakup and it sucks right now, that it gets better because trust me, young Jenny thought it was never going to get better when she went through a breakup, and now look at me, guys. Okay up next says Hello, Jenny and Drake. Hope you all are well. I've ritten a couple times about various things, but I wanted to ask both of your thoughts on young people listening to the show.

Me as well as many listeners listen to The Dave Ryan Show, because we grew up on it listening to it in the car. However, as the times change, as young adults don't really listen to the radio nowadays, I'm a nineteen year old college student and I don't know anybody in my friend group that listens to the radio. I think one reason is because of car play. I really didn't listen to the radio that often, but last summer I

got an internship. My shitty two thousand and two Chevy doesn't have the ability to plug in bluetooth to plug in and bluetooth my music from Spotify, so the entire summer I listened to the katiwb in the morning show during my thirty minute commute, and honestly, that was the only reason I started listening to KATIBB again, and I'm so glad I did. Now I listen to you guys via iHeart on my phone while getting ready in the morning and trying to

hold back laughter so I don't wake up my roommate. However, most of my friends have the ability to play their music in their car, so they just do that. It's to the point that when I gave a couple of friends a ride, someone grown when I said that we were going to listen to the radio. Is there anything that the industry is doing to combat the back the lack of listeners from gen Z. I love listening to you guys every morning, and I'm sure other people in their late teens early twenties would

too if they swapped it out for podcasts or car play. Thanks for all that you do and keep up the good work. Do art Lick Casey or Cassie, Sorry, Cassie. That is that is that is definitelyed. Yeah, that is a loaded thing. I will say. I think when younger people hear the word radio, they think of it as like a very old It's like, you know, millennials thinking about newspaper, Like, when you think newspaper, you think like nineteen forties, nineteen fifty. Right, It's

not that the newspaper is not that old. I want to clarify. I had a paper route when I was thirteen, so I read. I read the newspaper like, let's get a few facts right here. But okay, keep going. I get you're just trying to make an example of that. Yes, So I think when you know younger gen zers and what's the what's

the generation before us? Now? The one? No, no, no, the generation that's after you guys, Jen No, No, So the younger people, the basically teenagers, so that generation, I think when they hear the word radio, they they just they think of it as this is a really old thing. I think, what if you were to say podcasts, we're going to listen to a podcast instead, they probably have a little

bit of a different opinion about it. I think a lot of people's interests when it comes to radio and listening to it is a lot of what the personalities are saying, what they're doing on the radio. I think a lot of people connect with it a lot more. It's becoming less about the music and more about the personalities, and I think that'll take a few years to

really start ramping up more and more. But it's already started, you know, like you you see it with afternoon shows like across the country, just adding more time for them to talk in the afternoon, adding in more people talking in the afternoon, and that's just going to be an upward trend. So I think people are caring less about the music and more about the personalities.

And I think the transparency in this question, oh yeah, it was just I sort of Yesterday I had a conversation with Dave because he was like Carson, his son's my age and doesn't listen to Terrestrial this old school radia. Yeah. So yeah, it's just about like us finding the different ways to like bridge that's why you do Minnesota Goodbye. Yeah, that's why we do like social media clips, which is a whole other era of ways that

people aren't tapping into. Like, yeah, I was gonna say, I think to answer your question, the main thing is that we have to be on top of social media because social media a lot of times pulls people in enough to then be like wait, where do I listen to what they're talking about? And then they can start listening to the show. So that is why, like you know, some people look at social media as this awful evil thing or like you're vain when you're on it, but like it's a

part of our business, Like we have to be on social media. We have to build a brand, We have to to build people to get to know us, to like our personalities enough to then want to if they only follow us on social media, then they'll go start listening to the show. But that's like a huge factor there. Yeah, And the advantage is that like if you can't listen in the car, or you just have no aspiration

to listen to the podcast. You might just know. Like a fun example, E White was a lot of people knew him more for social media than they did being the night guy. He had a pretty big like TikTok and Instagram following, lots of food stuff coffee stuff in the Twin Cities, and so people got to know him from both of those things helped grow. Yeah, good for him. All right, we'll get to one more. Thank you so much for all the emails. We got quite a few in since

yesterday. Question next up, Let's see. I like that people are interested in like the behind the scenes. It's really cool. A lot of people don't get access to that stuff either. Yeah, so we gonna give it to you here right, all right. This one says, I just heard your show from Monday about finding the hair and the food, and I wanted to share some of my experiences. So we had our friend Tony was on and he had us situation where there was hair in his food, and he

told us about it and was wondering how someone else would handle it. But this person has a specific example. One time I ordered a drink at a restaurant and I saw something in the bottom of my glass after I took a few SIPs because it was a darker colored drink, and turns out it was a straw wrapper that was almost mixed in with the ice in my glass.

I brought it to the service attention, and she at first seemed like she didn't believe it was already in there because but luckily brought me a fresh drink. Another thing was actually a health hazard when my ex wife had ordered a salad that had chicken in it and it ended up that it had clearly raw chicken in it. The server apologized and we were able to get her meal for free, which I think was definitely fair. Yeah, absolutely, and

then they sign off right staff writer or Andrew. So we have a lot, not a lot, but a few more emails that we haven't been able to get to today, so we will get to those tomorrow. We got to wrap up the Minnesota goodbye for right now, but thanks for being on today, Vaunt and Drake for guests staring on today's episode as well. But feel free to send us any of your emails Ryan's show at KDWB dot com.
