Hello and welcome back to Daily English! Today’s phrasal verb is “weigh up.” One more time — weigh up. Let’s see if you can guess what it means from these clues:
Your friend is thinking about quitting her job and moving abroad. She says, “I need time to weigh up the pros and cons before I make a decision.”
Or imagine this: Someone offers you a high-paying job… but it means moving far from your family. You need to weigh up what matters more to you — money or being close to loved ones.
So what does “weigh up” mean? To weigh up means to carefully consider the different sides of something before making a decision. You weigh up the good and the bad, the risks and rewards — like putting them on a scale in your mind.
Examples: “Before accepting the job in Paris, she spent weeks weighing up her options.”
“They’re weighing up whether to buy a small apartment in the city or a big house in the suburbs.”
“I tried to weigh up what I’d gain by speaking out… and what it might cost me emotionally.”
Your Turn! Can you think of a time when you had to weigh up a difficult decision?
Maybe it involved your job, a relationship, or something personal. What helped you choose?
would you make the same choice again?
