when people spoke, how they behaved, what was expected. These were the unspoken rules.
So what does “unspoken rules” mean? “Unspoken rules” are rules or expectations that are not clearly explained, but everyone seems to understand them.
They are part of culture, part of society, and part of everyday life.
Let’s listen to some examples.
In conversations, there are often unspoken rules about taking turns, listening, and not interrupting too much.
In different cultures, there may be unspoken rules about personal space, eye contact, or politeness.
Even in friendships, there can be unspoken rules — things we expect from each other without saying them directly.
The challenge with unspoken rules is that not everyone knows them. And sometimes, misunderstandings happen simply because something was never clearly explained.
Becoming aware of unspoken rules can help us understand others better — and communicate more thoughtfully.
