Hello and welcome to Daily English. Today’s expression is simple, but very deep.
It’s “there’s more to it.”One more time: “There’s more to it.”
Listen to this: They looked at her and said, “You’re so lucky. Everything seems easy for you.”
She smiled, but inside she thought, “If only you knew… there’s more to it.”What do you think this expression means?
When we say “there’s more to it,” we mean: the situation is more complex than it looks.
There’s more behind the story. More feelings. More effort. More history. It reminds us not to judge too quickly.
Let’s listen to some examples: He quit his job, and people said, “Wow, you’re so brave.”
But they didn’t see the sleepless nights, the fear, the doubts, the long conversations at home.
To him, it wasn’t just bravery — there was more to it.
Another one: She seemed quiet and distant lately, and others thought she was just being cold. But she was carrying things she didn’t know how to explain. If they looked closer, they’d see there was more to it.
She was learning English, and someone said, “It’s just a language. Don’t stress.”
But for her, it meant confidence, new doors, and maybe a different future.
To her, there was more to it.
Sometimes this expression reminds us to be gentler with people — and with ourselves.
Because what we see on the surface is rarely the whole story.
Can you think of a time when people thought something was simple, but for you… There was more to it?
