Hello and welcome back to Daily English Today’s expression is: Spitting image. One more time: spitting image.
Let’s see if you can guess what it means from these clues:
🔹 A woman walks into the café, and the barista says, “Wow — you look exactly like your mom. You’re her spitting image!”
🔹 Everyone at the funeral whispered how the little boy was the spitting image of his grandfather.
What do you think “spitting image” means? If someone is the spitting image of another person, it means they look almost exactly the same — often a child looking like a parent, or two siblings who could be twins. It’s a fun and vivid way to talk about strong physical resemblance.
Examples:
My niece is the spitting image of my sister — same smile, same eyes, even the same way of walking. He hadn’t seen his old friend in 20 years, but when he met her daughter, it was like looking into the past — she was her spitting image.
When she saw the childhood photo of her mother, she gasped. She had never realized she was her spitting image.
Your Turn: Have you ever been told you're the spitting image of someone in your family? Or have you met someone who reminded you of a person you lost or loved — just by how they looked?
