Put two and two together

means to figure something out by connecting small pieces of information.
Examples:

1- She cleaned the house twice, checked the time every few minutes, and wore the perfume she always saved. You could put two and two together and know someone important was about to arrive.

2- Her father kept asking if she ate, if she slept enough, if she needed anything.
He never said “I miss you,” but she could put two and two together and hear the love behind the questions.

Hi everyone, and welcome to Daily English. Today’s expression is smart, practical, and incredibly common in everyday conversations. It’s “put two and two together.”

One more time: “put two and two together.”

Her friend suddenly stopped posting on social media,
 started taking long walks alone,
and kept checking her phone with a little smile.
 She didn’t say anything —
but people put two and two together:
she was probably seeing someone new.

What do you think this expression means? To “put two and two together” means to figure something out by connecting small pieces of information.
You don’t guess wildly;  you simply observe the clues and understand what they mean.

Let’s listen to some examples:

She cleaned the house twice, checked the time every few minutes, and wore the perfume she always saved. You could put two and two together and know someone important was about to arrive.

He started forgetting small things, drinking too much coffee, and saying “I’m fine” too quickly. You could put two and two together and understand he was stressed.

Her father kept asking if she ate, if she slept enough, if she needed anything.
He never said “I miss you,” but she could put two and two together and hear the love behind the questions.

In English, people use this expression when something becomes clear, not because someone told you, but because the clues were all there.

When was the last time you “put two and two together” about something in your life?
Thanks for listening to Daily English.

Have a wonderful day and See you tomorrow.
