She had already had a great day. She finished an important project, went for a long walk in the sunshine, and spoke with a friend she hadn’t seen in months.
Then in the evening, she received some unexpected good news. That was the icing on the cake.
So what does “icing on the cake” mean? The “icing on the cake” is an extra good thing that makes an already good situation even better.
Imagine a cake. The cake itself is already delicious. But the icing makes it even nicer.
Let’s listen to some examples:
He already loved the new apartment — the location was perfect and the space was beautiful.
When he discovered the balcony with a view of the park, that was the icing on the cake.
She was happy just to spend time with her family during the weekend.
The beautiful weather was the icing on the cake.
Learning English can already open many doors. But when you start connecting with people from different cultures through the language, that can feel like the icing on the cake.
Sometimes life already gives us something good. And then something small — but wonderful — appears on top.
