When we say “I didn’t see that coming,” we mean that something surprised us.
It was unexpected. We didn’t predict it. It caught us off guard.
Let’s listen to some examples: She thought the conversation was just casual. Then suddenly, the other person apologized
for something that happened years ago. She listened quietly and thought, “I didn’t see that coming.”
He assumed he hadn’t done well in the interview. Days passed with no news. Then an email arrived saying, “We’d like to offer you the position.” He stared at the screen and said,
“I didn’t see that coming.”
He thought the day would be ordinary and forgettable.
Then someone thanked him
for something small he had done months earlier.
It stayed with him all day.
He didn’t see that coming.
In English, we often use this expression for both good surprises and difficult ones. It’s a simple way to say: Life surprised me.
