Hello and welcome back to Daily English, where we learn real English for real life. Today’s word is: Helicopter parent. One more time: helicopter parent.
Let’s see if you can guess what it means from these clues: You’re 15 years old, and your mom still walks you to your classroom door every day and checks your homework before you sleep.
🔹 You're at a job interview, and your dad calls to make sure they treat you fairly.
What do you think a helicopter parent is? A helicopter parent is a parent who is overly involved in their child’s life — they "hover" over their child like a helicopter, watching and controlling everything: school, friends, activities, and even decisions in adulthood. Sometimes it comes from love. But it can also stop a child from learning independence or confidence.
Examples: 1-She wanted to study abroad, but her helicopter parents had already emailed the university with 17 questions before she even applied.
Growing up with helicopter parents, he never learned how to make a doctor’s appointment until he was 30.
3- Even at her wedding, her helicopter mom was fixing her dress, her hair, and even her emotions.
Your Turn: Have you ever known a helicopter parent? Or maybe your parents were like that? How did it make you feel — safe, frustrated, or maybe both? You can share your ideas, feedback, and drop me a message using the Gmail address provided.
