Hello and welcome to Daily English! As always, we learn English through real stories. The full transcript is in the description. Let’s hear the story of James Harrison.
What Happened? At age 14, James Harrison nearly died. He needed major chest surgery and received 13 liters of blood from strangers. That blood saved his life. After he recovered, he made a quiet promise: if he ever could, he’d give back. Years later, he started donating blood — regularly. But doctors noticed something special: his blood had a rare antibody that could protect unborn babies from a deadly disease.
With his permission, his blood was used to create a treatment called Anti-D. Over the next 60 years, James donated almost every week. From age 18 until 81, he donated blood plasma 1,173 times over 60+ years. He didn’t seek fame. He didn’t ask for anything. But it’s estimated that his blood helped save the lives of over 2.5 million babies.
He was called “The Man with the Golden Arm.” Why did he do it? He just said: Someone gave me blood to save my life. This is how I give back.”
