Hello and welcome to Daily English, where we learn English through ideas that help us grow as people. Today’s concept is Self-Compassion — the art of treating ourselves with the same kindness we offer others.

What does it mean? Many of us have no problem comforting a friend. When someone we love makes a mistake, we say, “It’s okay, everyone slips up.” But when we fail, our inner voice turns cold: “You’re not good enough. You should’ve done better.”

Psychologist Kristin Neff calls this the self-compassion gap — the distance between how gently we treat others and how harshly we treat ourselves. Self-compassion isn’t about ignoring mistakes. It’s about recognizing that pain, failure, and imperfection are part of being human. When we fall, we don’t need judgment — we need understanding. We should remember: being kind to ourselves doesn’t make us weak. It gives us peace of mind and strength to try again

He works hard every day — it’s okay to cut himself some slack once in a while. Question for You: but before that, I wanna tell you that these episodes are really heartfelt and so I would like you think deeply about the question and try to apply it to your life. Is there something you’ve been criticizing yourself for lately? How could you cut yourself some slack and treat yourself more like a friend? Remember, sometimes, the person who needs our compassion the most is the one we see in the mirror.
