Acquired taste

is something you do not enjoy at first, but gradually learn to appreciate over time.

Examples:

1- A lot of people dislike black coffee the first time they try it. It tastes too bitter or too strong. But after drinking it regularly for a while, many people begin to enjoy it. It becomes an acquired taste.

2- At first, waking up early to exercise may feel exhausting and uncomfortable. But after a few months, some people begin to genuinely enjoy the routine and the feeling afterward. Again, it becomes an acquired taste.

Sometimes, the things we end up appreciating most in life are not the things we immediately enjoy. Black coffee. Classical music. Running early in the morning. Even certain books or films.

At first, they may feel strange, boring, or even unpleasant. But slowly, something changes. And that’s exactly the idea behind today’s expression:

“acquired taste.” Hi everyone, and welcome to Daily English. Today we’re looking at a very natural and commonly used expression:

“acquired taste.” One more time: acquired taste.

An “acquired taste” is something you do not enjoy at first, but gradually learn to appreciate over time. Let’s start with a very relatable example.

A lot of people dislike black coffee the first time they try it. It tastes too bitter or too strong.

But after drinking it regularly for a while, many people begin to enjoy it.

It becomes an acquired taste. Or think about going to the gym.

At first, waking up early to exercise may feel exhausting and uncomfortable. But after a few months,
some people begin to genuinely enjoy the routine and the feeling afterward.

Again,
it becomes an acquired taste.

This expression is very common in daily conversations because people use it for:

foodmusichobbiesmovieshabitseven personalities sometimes

For example:

“Jazz was an acquired taste for me.”

Or:

“Living alone was difficult at first, but it became an acquired taste.”

And I think that’s interesting.

Because sometimes,
the things we appreciate most deeply
are the things that take time to understand.

Not everything meaningful creates instant excitement.

Some experiences grow on us slowly.

And maybe that’s true not only for taste,
but for life in general.

📍 Now it’s your turn:

What’s something that became an acquired taste for you?

Thanks for listening to Daily English.
Take care,
and see you tomorrow.
